Abstract:
Purpose – Religion and culture can influence ethical behavior in business. It is suggested that there has been and continues to be, a deep interrelationship between religion, business ethics, and economic activity in India. As India is becoming a major global economic business partner, understanding its unique ethical business infrastructure is gaining in importance. The purpose of this paper is to intend to further the understanding of Indian (“Vendantic”) business ethics, as opposed to Greco – Roman business ethics, as the foundation of business culture in India. This paper further elaborates on the evolution of business ethics and its implications on doing business in and with Indian companies. Design/methodology/approach – The authors undertook a conceptual approach in order to understand the evolutionary process of Indian business ethics in a holistic view in order to understand better its workings and effect on business interaction. Findings – The paper explains the constructs of business ethics in India and shows its evolution over time. Originality/value – This original theoretical paper examines the evolution of Indian business ethics over time in line with environmental changes in the Indian business landscape.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of the review is to provide current updates on regulations for ethics committees and researchers in India. Background Ethical dilemmas in research since time immemorial have been a major concern for researchers worldwide. The question “what makes clinical research ethical” is significant and difficult to answer as multiple factors are involved. Review results The research involving human participants in clinical trials should follow the required rules, regulations, and guidelines in one's own country. It is a dynamic process, and updates have to be learned by researcher and committee members. The review highlights the ethical regulation from the Drug Controller General of India, Clinical Trial Registry of India, and Indian Council of Medical Research guidelines. Conclusion In this article, the updates on Indian scenario of the Ethical Committee and guidelines are compiled. Clinical significance The review comes handy for clinical researchers and ethics committee members in academic institutions to check on the current updates and keep abreast with the knowledge on regulations of ethics in India. Abstract:
Ethical corporate identity has become an important aspect of the global nature of the business. Ethical business behaviour is a way to a better world and may ultimately improve profits. This study establishes a link between different dimensions of ethical corporate identity and financial performance of the company in Indian context. Corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability reporting are taken as indicators of business ethics. It was found that ethics and financial performance are significantly and positively correlated, however, only sustainability reporting has a significant impact on marketing ratios of Tobin Q, price to book value, accounting ratios of return on sales, return on capital employed, and return on equity for selected Indian companies. Corporate ethics policy should sensitise moral and ethical behaviour of business leaders.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between an employee’s beliefs about organizational ethics, career commitment (CC), affective commitment (AC) and career satisfaction (CS). The model expands the earlier work commitment models with CS as the outcome variable. Design/methodology/approach – Subjects were drawn from a 2014 survey of frontline and middle level executives from the insurance sector in India using a structured questionnaire from six Indian insurance companies, 252 were analyzed with structural equation modeling. Findings – The results indicate that executive perceptions about organizational ethics are important for both commitment and satisfaction. Ethical practices at work have a positive outcome on CC, AC and CS. The role of career commitment as a mediator in the relationship between ethics, AC and CS is evident. Research limitations/implications – It is a cross-section study restricted to a single group with similar demographic characteristics. Hence, generalizability of the findings need further research among different groups. Common method variance is addressed using Harman single factor test. Practical/implications – By working out ethical practices in the organization and developing a culture with clarity in business policies and financial constraints to stakeholders, the organizations can win employee commitment and satisfaction. Originality/value – The theoretical contribution of this paper lies in its inclusive approach encompassing the ethical belief of individual with commitment and CS. It differs from earlier studies that have shown the influence of protestant work ethic on commitment. It highlights the similarities and differences between several work commitment models developed in a western context, and the model that we have developed in the Indian context.

Nowhere is the fast changing nature of the global business landscape more perceptible than on the ethics front. With a spate of recent unethical behaviours by large corporations in the Western world, especially in USA, their societies have become intolerant to businesses that manifest unethical behaviour. Legal and regulatory frameworks in these countries have been swift to respond through stringent laws such as the Sarbanes Oxley Corporate Reform Act. Consequently, most businesses based in these countries have become extremely risk averse on the ethics front. Few of them would like to have anything to do with any unethical company in any part of the world. This changed mindset has significant ramifications for Indian companies that have global aspirations. No Indian company that hopes to globalize in any manner can afford to ignore these changes sweeping the global business arena on the ethics front. Business ethics encompasses much more than mere compliance with laws and regulations. It is about every individual in the organization acting ethically, about creating an ethically sound working environment within the organization and about modeling ethical behaviour by leadership at all levels. Research suggests that it makes good long-term business sense to be ethical. For a company's ethics policy to be successfully implemented, it is essential that: The code of ethics is clearly communicated to employees. Employees are formally trained in it. They are told how to deal with ethical challenges. The code is implemented strongly. The code is contemporary. The company leadership adheres to the highest ethical standards. When an employee gets no clear answers from the organization while dealing with decisions that have inherent ethical dilemmas, he tends to chart his own course of action by drawing on his intuition, conviction, and beliefs, and assessing the pressures of the situation at hand, putting the organization at considerable risk. Globalizing Indian companies essentially have two options. One is to sit back and wait for the tightening of regulatory and societal screws on them, forcing them into ethical behaviour in a reactive mode. The other approach is for them to proactively herald the new era of business ethics by becoming torch bearers of the new order of things. It is in the organization's selfinterest to take a proactive posture on the ethics issue, and be well-prepared for the shape of things to come. We also show how this can be done and what challenges must be addressed for success on this journey.

Abstract:
This article elucidates the meaning of Indian nationalism and its connection to religious universalism as a problem of ethics. It engages in that exercise of elucidation by interpreting a few of the key texts by Aurobindo Ghose on the relationship between ethics and politics in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Both secularist and subalternist histories have contributed to misunderstandings of Aurobindo's political thought and shown an inability to comprehend its ethical moorings. The specific failures in fathoming the depths of Aurobindo's thought are related to more general infirmities afflicting the history of political and economic ideas in colonial India. In exploring how best to achieve Indian unity, Aurobindo had shown that Indian nationalism was not condemned to pirating from the gallery of models of states crafted by the West. By reconceptualizing the link between religion and politics, this essay suggests a new way forward in Indian intellectual history.

O Yoga propõe uma prática pedagógica implícita nos conceitos de sua filosofia que envolvem como base os preceitos éticos norteadores da vida, dentre outros aspectos, que por fim objetivam a transcendência do ser. Esta pesquisa buscou estudar os princípios éticos do Yoga a partir de referenciais teóricos orientais e ocidentais e verificar se o Ocidente utiliza esses conceitos quando absorve esta filosofia a fim de praticá-la. Como amostra da assimilação dos conceitos éticos pelo Ocidente, este estudo de carácter qualitativo utilizou o método análise de conteúdo para investigar os temas e os discursos sobre a ética nas matérias da revista guia de Yoga. Foi realizada a pré análise, a exploração do material e o tratamento dos resultados, nas três edições da revista investigada. A pré análise consistiu na definição do objeto de estudo e leitura flutuante dos materiais, e a exploração do material definiu a unidade de codificação (tema). Os temas encontrados sobre a ética foram agrupados em quadros comparativos, e a partir desses resultados foi possível observar a frequência de aparição e relevância desses conteúdos. Uma das revistas também foi tratada com base argumentativa na literatura apresentada. As 3 edições analisadas apresentaram 49 matérias, sendo que 13 delas tratavam de um tema sobre a ética. Podemos dizer que a revista apresentou os conteúdos da filosofia de maneira superficial, simples e por vezes equivocada. No entanto, atrair os interessados através dos benefícios da prática demonstra um caminho positivo para que busquem maiores aprofundamentos e passem a refletir e exercer os preceitos éticos. Possivelmente, devido a diferenças culturais, a filosofia do Yoga não se popularizou tanto quando a prática. Porém, a reflexão sobre a sua ética possibilita inúmeros benefícios para o setor educacional, já que o aspirante escolhe praticar essa pedagogia voluntariamente em que não há término com o ano escolar ou com qualquer outro setor. Essa filosofia é pautada na dinâmica da vida não possuindo esgotamento, e sim aprofundamento conforme o autoconhecimento. O interesse pela prática demonstra a aproximação entre culturas distintas que só tendem a se complementar.
Yoga proposes an implicit pedagogical practice in the concepts of its philosophy that are based on the ethical precepts guiding the life, among other aspects, that finally aim at the transcendence of being. This research sought to study the ethical principles of Yoga from Eastern and Western theoretical references and to verify if the West uses these concepts when it absorbs this philosophy in order to practice it. As a sample of the assimilation of ethical concepts by the West, this qualitative study used the content anal ysis method to investigate themes and discourses about ethics in the articles of the guia de Yoga magazine. Pre - analysis, material exploration and treatment of the results were carried out in the three editions of the investigated magazine. The pre - analysi s consisted in defining the object of study and floating reading of the materials, and the exploration of the material defined the unit of codification (theme). The themes found on ethics were grouped in comparative tables, and from these results it was po ssible to observe the frequency of appearance and relevance of these contents. One of the magazines was also dealt with on an argumentative basis in the literature presented. The 3 editions analyzed presented 49 articles, 13 of which dealt with a theme on ethics. We can say that the magazine presented the contents of philosophy in a superficial, simple and sometimes wrong way. However, attracting Yoga users through the benefits of practice demonstrates a positive path for them to go deeper and to reflect an d exercise ethical precepts. Possibly due to cultural differences, the philosophy of Yoga did not become so popular as body practice. However, reflection on their ethics makes possible many benefits for the educational sector, since the aspirant chooses to practice this pedagogy voluntarily in which there is no end to the school year or any other sector. This philosophy is based on the dynamics of life not having exhaustion, but deepening according to self - knowledge. The interest in practice demonstrates th e approximation between distinct cultures that only tend to complement each other.

Hundreds of reporters gather and interpret news for four English-language newspapers in India's second-largest urban area Kolkata, West Bengal's state capital, which is home to over 4 million people. Journalists from The Statesman, The Telegraph-Kolkata, The Hindustan Times and The Times of India discuss how they collect their stories in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, and many other languages and write them in English targeting a small but emerging middle-class audience. Whether these articles focus on people-centric urban planning, armed vigilantes in community disputes, dowry death cases, or celebrity culture, all of the reporting involves cultural and ethical challenges. Using semi-structured interviewing and qualitative theme analysis, this study explores how gender, class, and religion affect the decision-making practices of 21 journalists working in Kolkata.

Has it addressed it ancient issue of social diversity? This paper seeks to assess the present problem faced by the Indian Democracy; problems based on India’s inherent social diversity. Furthermore the paper seeks to recommend a solution based on Amartya Sen’s Open Impartiality approach that will allow the country to reassess its democratic platform. Abstract:
This thesis predominantly seeks to explore the entanglements of class, patriarchy and global capital embedded within North Indian domestic work. The thesis firstly examines how the neoliberal policies of the 1980s and 90s shattered village economies and brought about the mass displacement of tribals and landless farmers, forced to leave the land they have cultivated for generations in pursuit of employment in India’s urban centers. While male migrants often find work in the informal sector and settle in slum communities, female rural migrants constitute the immense population of domestic workers within the confines of urban middle class homes. This thesis explores the histories, past and present, of Indian cultures of servitude that have brought migrant motherhood to a crisis point. The interdisciplinary analyses of the political economy of intimate labor are supplemented by a micro-level analysis of my own positionality within a middle class urban home in Jaipur, Rajasthan to bring an alternative perspective to the multiplicity of dialogues about ethical relationships with domestic workers. This thesis ultimately aims to open lines of inquiry about the inequalities embedded within domestic work in order to bring about a radical re-imagining of one’s own participation in the layers and chains of exploitative labor.

The influence of Mohandas K. Gandhi on social and environmental movements in post-colonial India has been widely acknowledged. Yet, the contributions of two European associates of Gandhi, Madeleine Slade and Catherine Mary Heilemann, better known in India as Mira Behn and Sarala Behn, have not received the due attention of the academic community. This dissertation is an examination of the philosophy and social activism of Mira Behn and Sarala Behn and their roles in the evolution of Gandhian philosophy of socioeconomic reconstruction and environmental conservation in the present Indian state of Uttarakhand. Instead of just being acolytes of Gandhi, I argue that these women developed ideas and practices that drew upon from an extensive intellectual terrain that cannot be limited to Gandhi’s work. I delineate the directions in which Gandhian thought and experiments in rural development work evolved through the lives, activism, and written contributions of these two women. Particularly, I examine their influence on social and environmental movements, such as the Chipko and the Anti-Tehri Dam movements, and their roles in promoting grassroots social development and environmental sustainability in the mountain communities of Uttarakhand. Mira Behn and Sarala Behn’s integrative philosophical worldviews present epistemological, sociopolitical, ethical, and metaphysical principles and practices that have local and global significance for understanding interfaith dialog, social justice, and environmental sustainability and thus constitute a useful contribution to the theory and practice of human emancipation in our times.

Abstract Indian Higher Education system has got 70 million students enrolled in different technical and professional courses, which is highest in world. Being the fastest growing economy, India has got global attention also. Despite such strong foundation, the nation lacks a skilled workforce. The expectations of the industry don’t match with what they receive as a workforce. There has been a continuous effort in instilling technical, communication, spiritual, leadership skills along with building a high quotient of ethics and professionalism in the students. The problem lies somewhere else, which needs quick attention. The present study attempts to analyze the effect of independent variables assessment of self competence, open to change, networking, professional growth, emotional growth, spiritual growth, realistic expectations, interpersonal skills, conceptual skills, technical skills, leadership skills, attitude towards planet, ethical disposition, flexibility to work and orientation towards money on the dependent variable Employment readiness through Regression analysis. The findings suggest that students need to assess their self competence, develop an achievement orientation attitude and work on technical skills in order to become Employment ready. There are very few studies addressing this issue in Indian context and researchers could find no published empirical work analyzing the effect of all these variables on Employment readiness. This would serve as a strong base for researchers in similar field. This study is beneficial for academicians, policy-makers and academic regulatory bodies. Abstract:
The Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Purdue University at Columbus/SE Indiana hosted ABET evaluators for the first time in the fall of 2005. Both the program objectives and outcomes of the MET program contain elements of ethical behavior and lifelong learning. These elements are simply reflective of the importance put on ethics and lifelong learning by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology programs in the TC2K criteria. This work will describe the use of test cases and specific exercises that are incorporated in classes during the first semester and final semester of the two-year Associate of Science program. In-class surveys of students are also used to examine the ethical and professional behavior of students. The test cases are presented in multiple parts with students required to finish their answers to the questions from the first part before they get to see the second part. The same procedure is followed for the remaining parts of the test case. Each part of the test case also includes comments from a panel of experienced engineers who lend their expertise to the situation. These comments are shared with the students. For lifelong learning, the students are presented with a short lecture on the value of lifelong learning that includes relevant data and facts related to lifelong learning. After this, an assignment is given that asks the students to learn about how to design a container for nuclear waste storage and ship it to the proper waste disposal location. Other assignments are mentioned and can be used in a similar manner.
