Abstract In 2015 Ethiopia was dubbed an “emerging economy,” experiencing substantial growth in GDP over the prior ten years. The country was considered an “African Lion” by the Brookings Institution, and foreign investment and interest began to grow, especially as a new PM took charge in 2018, ushering in immense hope from both Ethiopians and foreign investors. But just as quickly as hope can be sewn it can be cut. In Amharic, the translation of “hopeless” is tesfa qoretewal—qoretewal coming from the verb “to cut.” By 2020 Ethiopia descended into a civil war, foreign direct investment plummete

It is well known from relatively recent Ethiopic tradition that Ethiopia was once ruled by a queen called Gudit, Yodit, Isat or Gaՙwa, with both positive and negative characteristics. On the one hand she was a beautiful woman of the Ethiopian royal family, much like the Queen of Sheba, and on the other she was a despicable prostitute who, at a time of political weakness, killed the Ethiopian king, captured the throne, and as a cruel ruler destroyed Aksum, the capital, persecuted the priests, and closed the churches.

However, in times of internal political crisis, particularly in contemporary Ethiopia, the EOTC’s role is relatively insignificant. Previous studies have not focused on this issue. Such dynamics gained salience with the modern Ethiopian state’s practices and through their political history (Vaughan, 2003). Ethiopia is not intended to be interpreted either as a representative or as a unique case for the broader sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experience, but the book instead intends to shed light on Ethiopia’s particular development experience. To contextualize the findings of the research, this chapter therefore discusses some key elements of Ethiopia’s rich economic, political, and agricultural history.
