Abstract:
Ethiopia is clearly one of the most important countries in Africa. First of all, with about 75 million people, it is the third most populous country in Africa. Second, it is very strategically located, in the Horn of Africa and bordering Eritrea, Sudan, Kenya, and Somalia, with some of whom it has touchy and sometimes worse relations. Yet, its capital – Addis Ababa – is the headquarters of the African Union, the prime meeting place for Africa’s leaders. So, if things went poorly in Ethiopia, this would not be good for Africa, and for a long time this was the case, with internal disruption rife

Abstract:
This book documents the rise of digital repression—how governments are deploying new technologies to counter dissent, maintain political control, and ensure regime survival. The emergence of varied digital technologies is bringing new dimensions to political repression. At its core, the expanding use of digital repression reflects a fairly simple motivation: states are seeking and finding new ways to control, manipulate, surveil, or disrupt real or perceived threats. This book investigates the goals, motivations, and drivers of digital repression. It presents case studies in Thailand, the Phil

Abstract This book is the first continent-wide history of ancient African religions, focused on indigenous religions. Drawing on archaeological, linguistic, written, and oral sources, this work examines the history of ancient religions from the Paleolithic Age to the first Muslims in Africa. It begins with an examination of the earliest burial sites, associated with Homo naledi in South Africa, and analyzes the earliest archaeological evidence of ritual activity, funerals, and symbolic artifacts. It discusses the impact of the Neolithic Revolution on African religions, as well as the rise of t

This book explores cosmopolitanism as it emerged during the Restoration and the role theater played in both memorializing and satirizing its implications and consequences. Rooted in the Stuart ambition to raise the status of England through two crucial investments — global traffic, including the slave trade, and cultural sophistication — this intensified global orientation led to the creation of global mercantile networks and to the rise of an urban British elite who drank Ethiopian coffee out of Asian porcelain at Ottoman-inspired coffeehouses. Restoration drama exposed cosmopolitanism's most

This book asks and seeks to answer why we need a theory for African constitutionalism and how this could offer us better theoretical and practical tools with which to understand, improve, and assess African constitutionalism on its own terms. By locating constitutional studies in Africa within the experiences, interactions, and contestations of power and governance beginning in precolonial times, the book presents the development and transformation of African constitutional systems across time and place, along with the attendant constitutional designs and practices ranging from the nature and

US-style democracy has failed the world. To understand why this is so and where we can go from here, it makes sense to look to the Global South, where US-style democracy has never developed strong roots, and where alternative models have already begun to emerge. Drawing on three decades of personal, on-the-ground experience as well as on extensive research, renowned investigative journalist John Young offers a groundbreaking new account of that failure and of the emerging alternatives. Focusing on the countries in which his expertise is most authoritative—Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan—Young
