Abstract:
Obesity disproportionately affects U.S. ethnic minority preschool children, placing them at risk for obesity related co-morbidities and premature death. Effective culturally appropriate interventions are needed to improve health behaviors and reduce obesity in young high-risk minority children, while their behaviors are still developing. All known obesity intervention studies (e.g., diet and physical activity) since 2000 targeting U.S. ethnic minority preschool children were reviewed. Five electronic databases and eight published literature reviews were used to identify the studies. Intervention studies without identified ethnic minority participants were excluded. Ten obesity interventions studies met the review criteria. Published cultural adaptation guidelines were used to develop a mechanism to analyze, score, and rank the intervention adaptations. Cultural adaptations varied widely in rigor, depth, and breadth. Results indicated a relative absence of appropriately adapted obesity interventions for ethnic minority groups, suggesting a need for more rigorous cultural adaptation guidelines when designing obesity interventions for diverse ethnicities. Culturally appropriate adaptations appeared to enhance intervention relevance, effectiveness, and feasibility. The purpose of this literature review was to evaluate 1) the type and extent of cultural adaptations strategies applied to the interventions, and 2) how these adaptations related to the study outcomes.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to find out what keeps the foreign workers in Ericsson from achieving leading roles in the organization. The low presentation of the immigrants in Ericsson’s management team compared to the proportion of immigrants in lower positions, suggests that there might be a glass ceiling in the organization. By examining the existing obstacles that non-Swedish employees at Ericsson face in getting into the management team, we can come up with solutions that can make it easier to overcome these barriers. In order to find out these difficulties, fourteen interviews have been conducted with four groups of respondents: Immigrant managers, Immigrant employees, Swedish managers and Swedish employees. The results of these qualitative interviews are then analyzed to reach to a conclusion and the possible solutions to resolve these difficulties. These different groups have given different perspectives in looking at this complex phenomenon. We asked about the factors that were assumed to be the main problems such as: society’s culture, deficiency in recognition of competence, lack of contact network, lack of communication skills, internal factors and finally the organizational factors. The results proved that all these factors can affect the possibilities for career advancement for immigrant employees in Ericsson in some degree, but the most visible factors were the culture, lack of contact network, and internal factors. Therefore the organization can resolve these difficulties by focusing on increasing diversity awareness and training, helping the foreign employees form contacts using various strategies.

Abstract:
This study examines how the concepts of biomedical ethics are considered in Islam and how historical Islamic medical scholars treated the concept of ethics in their practice of medicine. Moreover, this research explores the principle of autonomy in biomedical ethics as a factor in Islamic practice of medicine. The issue of autonomy in medical practice is an important topic of discussion requiring examination of the methods of its adaptation and application in Muslim-majority countries. The value and significance of this topic continues at a global level, involving Muslim communities in Non-Muslim countries experiencing religious and social diversity. The fieldwork of this study was conducted in Turkey, Jordan and Gaza Strip, Palestine, investigating the subject matter with practitioners in health care sectors as well as with leading academics, researchers, non-government organizations and policymakers. The results indicate that the principle of autonomy is not fully implemented in the three countries from an Islamic perspective.
Doctor of Philosophy in Global Society Studies
Doshisha University

Abstract:
Despite advances in health, science, and technology, U.S. healthcare lags in providing access to care and quality care to racial and ethnic minorities. Cultural competence has been noted as a strategy to improve access and quality. The purpose of this project was to assess public health nurses' cultural competence before and after participating in cultural competence informational modules. Two conceptual models were used in this project for theoretical guidance: Leininger's cultural care diversity and universality theory and Campinha-Bacote's process of cultural competence. To assess the nurses' cultural competence, the Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist questionnaire was e-mailed to 57 public health nurses at a local health department. Survey participants remained anonymous. Data were collected on demographics. A paired t test was conducted to compare the statistical significance of the results. A quantitative software tool was used to analyze the data. Study results showed a confidence interval of 95% at p = 0.15, indicating that cultural competence informational modules made a significant difference between the pretest and the posttest of the Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist. Thus, cultural competence informational modules make a difference in public health nurses' awareness, knowledge, and skills, which can enhance their ability to provide culturally competent care to racial and ethnic minorities. The implications of this project for social change include supporting health care professionals' ability to promote and implement cultural competence practices for all populations to decrease health disparities

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is to analyze the experience of introduction of workshops about Brazilian Culture at a municipal school at São Paulos capital which pedagogical project has distinct characteristics. Sketching the main lines of the project at the school where the experience occurs describing and problematizing the work developed in these workshops, specially, the one of Capoeira and Music workshop which works about an afro-brazilian thematic. The thesis looks for to analyze the tensions existents between the official knowledge transmitted in school and the traditional one made on the popular culture universe. There were made interviews with members of the scholar community principal, teachers, workshoppers, members of the Pedagogical Council as well as students and relatives with the objective to rebuild the beginnings of the activities related to brazilian culture at school and to check the unfold of the approach that values the contributions of afro-brazilian culture. The objective was analyzing in what measure occurs the integration between the systematic knowledge and cultural workshops; if teachers at school demonstrate accepting and recognizing the work proposal with afro-brazilian culture as a component at curriculum contents and, more, if they have noticed changes on the way that the students organize their convictions about the presence and the contribution of afro-descendants in our culture. On children part it was intended to identify how they catch and reorganize information came upon workshops which have as thematic afro-brazilian culture and if, in any way, afro-descendants students accept much better the presence of black-cultures building their identities. On white-children part it was wanted to observe if the approach employed at these workshops has produced changes relating to the amplification on their original cultural repertory. Relating to the family, it was tried to captivate how they accept the proposal offered by the school: working with cultural diversity. Therefore, we have used theoretical reference offered by the curriculum critical theory, based on authors like Apple, Giroux, McLaren, Sacristán, as well as some contributions from Canclini to comprehend better the introduction of traditional cultures at the global capitalism context.

Mac, Gabhann Kevin. "Managing ethno-cultural differences in healthcare service delivery in hospital settings : the Irish experience." Phd thesis, Université de Strasbourg, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00983562.

Full text
Abstract:
Europe in the 21st century is a continent of cultural and ethnic diversity. Recent enlargement of the European Union to 27 states, constant flows of free trade and the migration of people have resulted in an increasingly diverse Europe. National health systems face the challenge of accommodating the cultural diversity of healthcare providers and service users. The Irish health system is an example of a national health system which has attempted to implement adequate planning and delivery of care and support services, encompassing the needs of minority ethnic communities (MECs) in a new and rapidly changing multicultural Ireland. This research focuses on the challenges of recent multiculturalism in Ireland and describes the Irish health sector's process in the construction of the Whole Organisation Approach (WOA) as the framework for Irish hospitals to respond to the management of diversity and the provision of culturally sensitive healthcare service delivery to members of MECs.The aim of the research is to investigate how six hospitals have implemented the Whole Organisation Approach as recommended in the Irish Health Services Executive's National Intercultural Health Strategy 2007-2012. Research findings indicate to what extent the Irish strategy has been implemented in each hospital and outline factors that promote and impede successful implementation at a hospital level and analyses how each of the three strands, i.e. organisational ethos, workplace environment and service elements necessary to support intercultural training, of the WOA have been implemented across the 6 hospitals.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the employees’ experienced reasons of why there are so few workers with other ethnic backgrounds in the organization BYGGET. The organization is one of the largest construction firms in Sweden and to ensure the company’s anonymity they have been given the fictitious name BYGGET. An information letter was sent to a targeted selection of managers within the local office and seven (n=7) people agreed to participate in the study. Data was collected with semi structured interviews which were then analyzed with a thematic method. The analysis revealed three main themes with associated subcategories, which became the foundation of the study’s final results. The results showed that organizational culture and education were the experienced reasons of why there were so few employees with other ethnic background. Further the results showed that quotation also was a theme that was discussed in the event of change and how that could happen. To increase the diversity in the organization the company must decrease the traditional influence of the trade union. Also it must be easier to ensure the quality of educations from other countries so that they will be valid for Swedish construction jobs.

Walker, Scott. "Does Cultural Heterogeneity Lead to Lower Levels of Regime Respect for Basic Human Rights?" Thesis, University of North Texas, 2002. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc3303/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a cross-national investigation of the relationship between cultural heterogeneity and regimes' respect for basic human rights. The quantitative human rights literature has not yet addressed the question of whether high levels of cultural diversity are beneficial or harmful. My research addresses this gap. I address the debate between those who argue that diversity is negatively related to basic human rights protection and those who argue it is likely to improve respect for these rights. Ultimately, I propose that regimes in diverse countries will be less likely to provide an adequate level of subsistence (otherwise known as basic human needs) and security rights (also known as integrity of the person rights) to their citizens than regimes in more homogeneous countries. Using a data set of 106 non-OECD countries for the years 1983 and 1993, I employ bivariate, linear multivariate regression, and causal modeling techniques to test whether higher levels of ethnolinguistic and religious diversity are associated with less regime respect for subsistence and security rights. The analysis reveals that higher levels of cultural diversity do appear to lead to lower respect for subsistence rights. However, counter to the hypothesized relationship, high levels of diversity appear to be compatible with high levels of respect for security rights.

Dement, Betty Antoinette. "Empowering Cultural Competency in Healthcare Providers." Thesis, Walden University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10822211.

Full text
Abstract:

Racial and ethnic health disparities are highest in communities of color; providing culturally competent care could address these disparities. Culturally competent communication between the healthcare provider and the patient is an essential behavior that may improve health in racially and ethnically diverse women. A quality improvement project was completed with guidance from the 5 constructs of the Campinha-Bacote model as the conceptual framework, and the method used was the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. The perspective of 20 Mexican American and 20 African American women in El Paso, Texas between ages 45 and 72 with menopausal symptoms was surveyed to determine if culture had an impact on the presence or absence of communication with their healthcare providers. Results showed women’s perceptions of positive and negative communication behaviors with their healthcare providers was inconclusive; however, results showed that provider communication about health promotions, use of alternative medicine, and shared-decision making regarding health management needs improvement to promote adherence to medical regimen and feelings of mutual respect. Integrating cultural competence into existing evidence-based care can positively impact the delivery of services and help improve the quality of care. Healthcare providers can impact positive social change through the lessening of burdens associated with the lack of diversity in the workforce by including cultural competence training into the curriculum of nursing and medical schools.

Both are of fundamental importance for the understanding of the current sociopolitical conjuncture in Guinea-Bissau, as a result of successive coups d'état in that country. It points out that most of Guinea-Bissau's problems originate from the ideology of a centralized policy implemented by the PAIGC, which created the new Guinea-Bissau state. In order to do so, it addresses the significant character of conflicts of power and struggles for the legitimacy of the various ethnicities disregarded in the textual body of the Nationalist Constitution of Guinea-Bissau, which seeks to impose one culture as a national to the detriment of others. It addresses how the feeling of uncertainty about the future of Guinea-Bissau terrifies the Guineans, especially the peasants manipulated by the illusory discourse of unity and struggle of the PAIGC, which called on the Guineans to fight for "national liberation." It indicates the absence of a political project of multiethnic conscience to promote the communication link between the subjects of Guinean politics. It concludes that the narrative that once accommodated Guineans has called their attention today, forcing them to leave the comfort zone in defense of the rights and duties common to all Guineans.

Abstract:
The Tay people are an ethnic minority of Vietnam. Tay literature has many unique facets with relevance to cultural identity. It plays an important part in the diversity and richness of Vietnamese literature. In this study, Tay literature in Vietnam is analyzed through a cultural perspective, by placing Tay literature in its development from its birth to the present, together with the formation of the ethnic group, and historical and cultural conditions, focusing on the typical customs of the Tay people in Vietnam. The researcher examines Tay literature through poems of Nôm Tày, through the works of some prominent authors, such as Vi Hong, Cao Duy Son, in the Cao Bang province of Vietnam. Cao Bang is home to many Tay ethnic people and many typical Tay authors. The research also locates individual contributions of those authors and their works in terms of artistic language use and cultural symbolic features of the Tay people. In terms of art language, the article isolates the unique use of Nôm Tay characters to compose stories which affect the traditional Tay luon, sli, and so forth, and hence the use of language that influences poetry and proverbs of Tay people in the story of Vi Hong, Cao Duy Son. Assuming a symbolic framework, the article examines the symbols of birds and flowers in Nôm Tay poetry and the composition of Vi Hong, Cao Duy Son, so to point out the uniqueness of the Tay identity. The above research issue is necessary to help us better appreciate the cultural values preserved in Tay literature, thereby, affirming the unique cultural identity of the Tay people and planning to preserve and develop these unique cultural features from which emerges the risk of falling into oblivion in modern social life in Vietnam. In addition, this is also a research direction that can be extended to Thai, Mong, Dao, etc, ethnic minorities in Vietnam.

Abstract:
Migratory displacements, the multiplicity of ethnic groups, and tremendous cultural diversity in today's society (culture, sex, religion, language, education, sexual orientation) worldwide have made it necessary for health professionals to address the immediate demands and needs of society. The objective of this study was to identify the development of diversity competency through educational innovations. The methodology was quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional. The tool was a questionnaire used as a pre-test and post-test to measure the value perceived by the students participating in our university's Tec Week activities. It was applied to the total number of students enrolled in the Tec Week activities. The questionnaire was answered by 21 students participating in the activities "Me, You, Others, Us" and "Diversity in a Globalized World." Focus groups validated the questionnaire; for statistical analysis, the Wilcoxon test was used and Cronbach's Alpha (0.97). The results of the Tec Week activities "Me, You, Others, Us" and "Diversity in a Globalized World" showed the dimension in which students feel more confident in their self-reflection. For the diversity competency, it was "Strengthen my Support for Gender Equality." However, the activity in which the students did not feel confident in both the pre and post-tests was "Participate in Inclusion Initiatives with Vulnerable Groups." The development of diversity competency contributes high value to the training of health professionals. It is based on human rights and individuality and considers the patient's characteristics, expressing openness, interest, and disposition towards the diversity surrounding them. Abstract:
One of the main figures of the Romanian ethnographic museography of the interwar period was Petre Ștefănucă, the first Bessarabian who developed the concept of an ethnographic museum and for the first time expressed the idea of organizing a Bessarabian ethnographic museum in Chișinău. The author makes an analysis of the concept elaborated by P. Ștefănucă, concluding that the scientist defined an ethnographic museum as: – a means of saving and researching the ethnographic heritage and as a real living school of knowledge of the Romanian people between the Prut and the Dniester; – a scientific institution discussing a broad issue, that of integrating ethnology into history and, in its light, the relationship between a historical museum and an ethnographic museum; – a general museum, whose collections are based on a large typological diversity of cultural values, but with an emphasis on folk architecture and traditional techniques; – a repository of intangible heritage, suggesting that elements of this heritage be collected from peasants who are keepers of old beliefs and customs. P. Ștefănucă believed that the developed concept can be implemented only when the necessity and usefulness of the ethnographic museum for Bessarabia is realized by the whole society.

Abstract:
Moldovan cuisine is a real treasure with tasty miracles, where the hearty soul of our people rules. These are the dishes generously and proudly served to all guests, who want to get familiarized with our country and culture. Moldovan cuisine is a part of the culture of the Republic of Moldova. Its diversity is due to the rich natural opportunities of our country. Grapes, fruit, vegetables, cattle breeding and aviculture – all such riches are successfully used in national cuisine. If speaking about traditional cuisine, we cannot but mention such dishes as Moldovan cozonac (sweet leavened bread), Moldovan pasca (Easter bread), sarmale (stuffed grape leaves or stuffed cabbage), zeama de gaina (sour chicken soup), alivanca (custard tart), Moldovan turta (cake), turta cu mac (poppyseed cake), and so on. The traditional dishes of the Republic of Moldova, which were forgotten in the mists of time, are the subject-matter of interest in this thesis paper, since they are less studied but still very valuable. The realized onsite study allowed us stating the existence of a large-scale range of recipes of alivanca, i.e. a peasant dessert, which is specific to Moldova, including: custard tart with sheep cheese (branza), custard tart with whey cheese (urda), custard tart with pork rinds (jumari), custard tart with dill and bunch onion, custard tart with nettle, custard tart with stevia, custard tart with garden orache, custard tart with chervil, custard tart with pumpkin, sweet custard tart.
