The question of nation-building has always been a central issue in Malaysian politics. Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence spawn a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis), the project of nation-building remained a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. Malaysian politics has long been dominated by tensions arising out of inter-ethnic inequality. However, economic policy in the earlier years of independence took a laissez-faire approach. Following the racial riots in 1969, there was a re-think on policy and the New Economic Policy (NEP) was promulgated in 1970. The underlying objective of the policy was to achieve national unity, which entailed improving the economic and social status of the Malay (Bumiputera) community visa-vis the non-Malays (non-Bumiputeras), especially the Chinese. The policy also attempted to transfer ownership of indust

Ethnicity has always been regarded as a central issue in Malaysia’s socio-political and economic spheres. Whilst it is true that the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable political economy, at least since the Malay-Sino Riot of 1969, Malaysian inter-ethnic relationships remain fragile and delicate. This thesis explores the importance of ethnicity for Malaysians by focusing on the relationships between Malay and Chinese students in Penang and Glasgow. The forces of globalisation reportedly have de-centred the self from the core, leading to multiple, fluid and contradictory identities. Individuals have been displaced from their backgrounds, and have emerged as individuals, in contrast to past collective identities. People are self-reflexive in constructing their sense of self, with the media playing a role in nurturing one s quest for self-identity (Thompson, 1995). This issue is of

Malaysian economic development policies since independence have been strongly influenced by the relationship between the two major ethnic groups, Malays and Chinese, and by the political complexion of the state which is dominated by the Malays. Ethnic considerations in shaping economic development policies resulted in official preference of foreign investment in financing Malaysia's industrialization and economic growth. The preference was most obvious since the implementation of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1971. The NEP, a sweeping affirmative action program, had two official objec
