Abstract:
Since the early 1990s, language used to speak of cultural practices once thought of as "folklore" has become increasingly standardized around the term intangible heritage. Supranational intangible heritage policies promote a contradictory package that aims to preserve local identity and cultural diversity while promoting democratic values and economic development. Such efforts may contribute to the deployment of language that stresses mutual exclusivity and incommensurability, with important consequences for individual and group access to resources. This article examines these tensions with ethnographic attention to a Hungarian folk revival movement, illuminating how local histories of "heritage protection" meet with the global norm of heritage governance in complicated ways. I suggest the paradoxical predicament that both "liberal" notions of diversity and ethno-national boundaries are co-produced through a number of processes in late capitalism, most notably connected to changing relations of property and citizenship regimes.

Abstract:
The modern world is faced with global instability, adaptation to which has become a motive for the transition to a new model of civilizational development. The key point of this model is the preservation of the entire cultural diversity of the world through a real mutually equal dialogue of cultures, taking into account the ethno-cultural diversity and national characteristics of peoples. The collapse of the USSR gave rise to a “fever of ethnocracy”, the desire of the new government to oust all representatives of foreign-speaking ethnic groups from the country at any cost, especially from the administration, education, ideology and spiritual life, the armed forces and law enforcement agencies, even regardless of their level of competence. The ongoing processes of systemic transformation were accompanied by a political, economic social and cultural crisis, which required national-state self-determination. It was necessary to quickly decide on filling the specific content of national sovereignty, decide on the Basic Law, deal with the “blank spots” of Belarusian history, decide what the essence of the Belarusian national idea, Belarusian identity is, how to live on, with whom to be friends, what model of development to follow. In the context of such dynamic changes and global challenges, finding an opportunity to protect traditional cultural values means protecting the national interests of your country. National identity is instilled and fixed in the cultural code of a citizen of a country that he wants to be proud of and accepts as his only homeland. People are led into the future by ideals associated with the dream of a fair society with ensuring stability and the hope of returning to national traditions. The Republic of Belarus is located in the border zone between two civilizational models of development, Western and Russian. Belarus received from each of them some features, which together formed a kind of cultural and historical unity, at the same time similar and unlike these civilizations. The rooting of the Belarusian statehood is characterized by the fact that the "European" component of the Belarusian identity is strengthened in comparison with its "Soviet" part. The formation of the national and civic consciousness of young people is quite contradictory and ambiguous. This is largely due to a certain deprivation of youth of "historical memory", the presence of "blank spots" in the history of the post-Soviet countries, and the inconsistency of the formation of a new statehood. The claims of any culture to the exclusive universal significance are counterproductive in this situation. Modern globalism is dangerous because it tries to instill in the consciousness the idea of the universal significance of only European culture.

Abstract:
School violence and bullying are human behaviors that occur in the school environment and are often - though not necessarily - associated with issues of ethno-cultural diversity. Ethno-culturally diverse students are sometimes blamed for incidents of violence, a phenomenon that is observed both in the media and in everyday life. The scientific research on the subject presents on the one hand the picture of the systematic victimization of students with ethno-cultural peculiarities; on the other hand it investigates the hypothesis that the ethno-cultural diversity does not substantially affect the occurrence of school violence. While acknowledging the fact that ethno-culturally diverse students are involved in violent confrontations, research rather attributes it to the intense living conditions of immigrant families.

Abstract:
Worldwide, immigrant workers are responsible for much of the care provided to elderly people who require assistance with personal care and with activities of daily living. This article examines the characteristics of immigrant home care workers, and the ways in which they differ from non-migrant care workers in Canada. It considers circumstances wherein the labor of care is framed by ethno-cultural diversity between client and worker, interactions that reflect the character of this ethno-cultural diversity, and the strategies employed by workers to address issues related to this diversity. Findings from a mixed methods study of 118 workers in the metropolitan area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, indicate that while the discriminatory context surrounding migrant home care workers persists, issues of ethno-cultural diversity in relationships are complex, and can also involve non-foreign born workers.
Multi-cultural home care is not always framed in a negative context, and there often are positive aspects.

Abstract:
The conventional approach to describing ethno-cultural relations in a particular nation-state is in terms of the majority/minority dichotomy, that is, a representation of a society as consisting of the core nation and a minority or number of minorities alongside it. The minorities are usually of different ethnic origin, possess distinct linguistic-cultural characteristics and tend to be represented as groups that, owing to their minority status, are discriminated against. This approach has been adopted in Ukraine where in official discourse and state documents the core nation co-exists with national minorities. Ethno-cultural diversity is addressed by policy makers and the academic community, most often in terms of “national minorities,” “protection of minority rights,” “provision of schooling for minorities” and so forth. Ukrainian scholars and policy makers tend to use the same concepts as their counterparts in the West, albeit often modifying them to Ukrainian circumstances. However, as will be argued, this dichotomous treatment of the titular majority and the minority is ill-suited to Ukraine's circumstances as even the very concept of “minority” is unclear owing to the blurred sense of identity amongst many Ukrainians and Russians.

Mac, Gabhann Kevin. "Managing ethno-cultural differences in healthcare service delivery in hospital settings : the Irish experience." Phd thesis, Université de Strasbourg, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00983562.

Full text
Abstract:
Europe in the 21st century is a continent of cultural and ethnic diversity. Recent enlargement of the European Union to 27 states, constant flows of free trade and the migration of people have resulted in an increasingly diverse Europe. National health systems face the challenge of accommodating the cultural diversity of healthcare providers and service users. The Irish health system is an example of a national health system which has attempted to implement adequate planning and delivery of care and support services, encompassing the needs of minority ethnic communities (MECs) in a new and rapidly changing multicultural Ireland. This research focuses on the challenges of recent multiculturalism in Ireland and describes the Irish health sector's process in the construction of the Whole Organisation Approach (WOA) as the framework for Irish hospitals to respond to the management of diversity and the provision of culturally sensitive healthcare service delivery to members of MECs.The aim of the research is to investigate how six hospitals have implemented the Whole Organisation Approach as recommended in the Irish Health Services Executive's National Intercultural Health Strategy 2007-2012. Research findings indicate to what extent the Irish strategy has been implemented in each hospital and outline factors that promote and impede successful implementation at a hospital level and analyses how each of the three strands, i.e. organisational ethos, workplace environment and service elements necessary to support intercultural training, of the WOA have been implemented across the 6 hospitals.

Willem, Cilia. ""Roots and Routes". Young people from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds constructing their identities using digital media." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/1273.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to investigate young immigrants and ethnic minorities' (IEM) perceptions of media portrayals of their cultural groups, with a focus on IEM's understandings regarding the construction of cultural identity in their context in Barcelona. Further, it intends to examine the ways in which young IEM, both as consumers and as producers of media texts, use digital media and media literacy to contest stereotyped portrayals of cultural groups and to construct cultural identities in their own terms. <br/><br/>The relationship between media, representation and identity is explored through an examination of the theoretical body of work on identity politics, and of previous empirical studies focusing specifically on the portrayal of IEM in the media, at both the transnational and Spanish levels. Additionally, special attention is given to media discourses regarding multiculturalism and the multicultural society, with the aim of examining participants' positions towards cultural and identity politics. Approaches to audience studies, in terms of to what audiences do with media rather than what media do to audiences, are examined and evaluated with regards to their relevance to this study. <br/><br/>A discussion of critical methodologies involving ethnographic and visual methods within social research, introduces the research activities carried out as part of this study. A paradigm based on the assumption of a universal capacity for language and communication informs this study's methodological choices and eliminates the hierarchy between 'researcher' and 'researched', as both are seen as participants in a mutual learning process. <br/><br/>A total of sixteen young people (18-33 years old) from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, living in Barcelona between 2006 and 2008, participated in this study. They were part of a natural group of media-makers in an ongoing artistic and intercultural project called 'Roots and Routes', which was the inspiration for this thesis title. Seven audio-visual texts produced by the participants were analysed, together with accompanying reflective commentaries, interviews and life narratives. <br/><br/>The analysis reveals that young IEM are fully aware of the negative portrayals in the media of cultural groups, and articulately identify consequences for their daily lives. The study highlights the double hazard for IEM of mainstream media constructions of cultural identity, as participants cannot escape the identities imposed on them, and at the same time they are forced to constantly prove themselves to the locals. However, deeper analysis shows how IEM construct their own cultural and gendered identities in coming to terms with their 'routes' in an urban and intercultural context, rather than falling back on their 'roots', despite attempts by media discourses to focus attention on cultural differences in terms of origin, ethnicity, nationality or religion. <br/><br/>Additionally, the study illustrates how IEM are able to break the 'circle of representation' by creating alternative imagery and distributing it by means of online social networks, the pitfalls of the so-called 'social web' notwithstanding.<br><i>CATALÀ:<br/><br/><I>'ARRELS I CAMINS'. CAPOCASA, MARCO. "Cultural, geographic and genetic isolation in Italian ethno-linguistic minorities." Doctoral thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11573/917825.

Full text
Abstract:
The identification of isolation signatures is fundamental to better understand the genetic structure of human populations and to test the relations between cultural factors and genetic variation. In contrast to the methodological advancements achieved in the study of isolation in natural populations, current approaches in human population genetics are based on the evaluation of within and among-group diversity, but it remains difficult to distinguish between the effects of reduced sample size, purifying selection and differential admixture and the consequences of long-term isolation. To overcome these limitations, we have integrated the analysis of classical genetic diversity measures with a Bayesian method to estimate gene flow and have carried out simulations based on the coalescent with the aim to test whether a short history of cultural and geographical isolation may have left detectable genetic signatures in some Italian populations. The investigation has been primarily conducted using mitochondrial and Y chromosome polymorphisms, that continue to represent today important tools to study human isolates. The research has been conducted in Italy due to the fact that its history of migrations has determined a degree of ethno-cultural heterogeneity of the most complex in the European continent. However, all these migration events explain at least part of the genetic structure of extant Italian populations, the understanding of which needs to take into account the important component of the historic ethno-linguistic minorities, most of them are concentrated within the Alpine environment. This study has been first focused on the analysis of the genetic structure of four linguistic islands of the Eastern Italian Alps (Lessinia, Sappada, Sauris and Timau) integrated with the estimation of incoming and outgoing gene flow under an isolation with migration model using mitochondrial DNA data between the populations that show robust signatures of isolation and a neighbor or a Central Western European population. The study has been extended by the investigation of high resolution data on Y chromosomal variation in three distinct Alpine ethno-linguistic groups (Italian, Ladin and German), in order to understand how their genetic diversity is patterned. Combining unilinear polymorphisms, we used coalescent simulation to test the role of effective size and gene flow in determining their genetic diversity. We extended the dataset with numerous Italian populations in order to evaluate the association of linguistic and geographic factors with genetic isolation. Furthermore, a comparison of the extent of genetic diversity observed in Italy and Europe were performed taking into account both open populations and geographically and/or linguistically isolated groups. Finally, we tested the usefulness of a panel of 15 autosomal microsatellite loci usually used in forensic genetics to understand the effects of physical barriers and linguistic diversity on the genetic structure of Alpine populations. The comparison between mitochondrial, Y chromosomal and autosomal patterns of variation observed suggests that not only geographic factors and linguistic diversity, but also socially aspects (e.g. residence rules, marital behaviours, inheritance and succession systems) should be taken into account when studying the genetic structure of Alpine populations. From an anthropological point of view, this research highlights the important contribution of the so called “linguistic islands” (e.g. German speaking groups of Sappada and Luserna from the Eastern Italian Alps) to the genetic diversity of Italy. Notably, the aims of this project have not been limited to scientific outputs, having also included the development of a community-based participatory research protocol, which also takes into account the importance of the return of scientific results to the involved communities.

Ryder, Tracy. "Accommodating the Ethno-cultural Differences of Students: An Analysis of Ontario Community Colleges." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/29939.

Full text
Abstract:
This study relies on qualitative research: open-ended, semi-structured interviews were used to gain insight into the experiences of students of ethnically diverse backgrounds from three Greater Toronto Area (GTA) community colleges. Additional data were collected from college websites and meetings with college student services directors to gain a broader understanding of the context in which the ethnically diverse student is engaged. This research is guided by the psychosocial theories of student development of Chickering (1969), and Chickering & Reisser, (1993) including a brief overview of the cognitive-structural theory of student development; and the typology theory of student development. Student development theory provides insight into how life experiences shape one’s ability to learn and interact with others. An expert panel assisted with the refining of the interview questions and provided feedback on the overall study findings. In the interest of accountability, members of the expert panel were recruited based on their experience with issues around the diversity that exists within our GTA community colleges. Interviews were conducted with 25 students of ethnically diverse backgrounds to explore their overall college experience and their perceptions of the provision of student services at their college. The conclusions drawn from this study suggest that the colleges participating in the study have met the participants’ expectations in the areas of overall college experience and the services each provides. In addition, it was found that the colleges have had a positive impact on student experience resulting in success. The findings also indicate that these colleges have done little to facilitate quiet learning spaces and are not providing for the religious requirements of students. This study contributes to a better understanding of the challenges students from diverse backgrounds may face when seeking out services at their college and it offers recommendations to enhance these colleges’ efforts in this area along with recommendations for further research.

Abstract:
Globalization makes it inevitable that a civilization of Western origin will come into contact with traditional societies, which creates serious problems, up to the threat of even the disappearance of traditional cultures, natural and cultural heritage of these regions. Any diversity (natural, economic, ethno-cultural, etc.) is a resource for the development of a particular territory, society as a whole and individual communities. This is especially important for closed societies that have exhausted internal reserves for development in isolation and are forced to open their borders. In this article, this is illustrated by the example of Nepal and Bhutan.

Abstract:
Under the modern sociocultural reality, parenthood is highly prioritised among the issues of education of children and their integration into the social space. The positioning of parenthood in the framework of public discourse suggests a so-called ‘parenthood turn’ where parenthood is the key to understanding and addressing the widest range of issues related to the social identity of personality. The purpose of this article is to examine the main parenthood implementation patterns existing in the space of contemporary culture, and to research into publicity and privacy in the context of each of the concerned patterns. The methodological basis of the study is represented by systemic, ethno-psychological, and phenomenological approaches allowing us to analyse the parenthood phenomenon in terms of super-individual and subjective-personal determination, and to highlight discursive parenthood patterns implementable within the space of contemporary culture. The article covers such concepts as ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’ parenthood. The main markers characterising these concepts have been presented. The mobility of the modern sociocultural reality, the transparency of national and cultural boundaries sets a number of prerequisites that change the sociocultural perception of parenthood. As transmittable within the framework of public discourse, these prerequisites at the level of personal choice are implementable throughout the range of possible patterns of parenthood. The diversity and variability of the parenthood experience implementation implies the extension of boundaries of parenthood normativity in culture. That said, the normativity criteria shall be set up both on the basis of external social-demographic, economical, and other prerequisites, and much more on the maturity of inner attitudes of the parent understanding and accepting the permanency of the parenthood experience, and taking on the responsibility for the freedom assumed under this permanency.

Abstract:
Valorizing the cultural potential of the Valjevo region is vital for tourism development for several reasons. Cultural heritage sites, including monasteries, churches, ethno-villages, and traditional events, represent a rich heritage and serve as a valuable tourist resource. Preserving and promoting these elements not only attracts tourists but also provides them with an authentic experience. Cultural tourism significantly contributes to the local economy through various activities such as tourism, souvenir trade, hospitality, and accommodation. Furthermore, the promotion of cultural heritage encourages the preservation of tradition and community identity. This paper demonstrates how cultural potentials influence the development of tourism and the economy of the Valjevo region. The results are based on a combination of different research methods on cultural resources in the region, which provide a foundation for their valorization. The approach involved engaging the local population and potential visitors through questionnaires, qualitative-quantitative methods, and Hilary du Cros' methods for cultural potential valorization. By implementing smart planning and management strategies, Valjevo's cultural potential can form the basis for developing various forms of tourism, including cultural, rural, religious, and gastronomic tourism. Investing in restoring and promoting cultural monuments and events helps diversify tourism offerings, attracting visitors from different backgrounds. Therefore, valorizing the cultural potential of the Valjevo region is not just an investment in tourism but also a means of preserving identity, fostering economic development, and promoting local culture.
