Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT. The migration is a major pressing issue. The media make it a treatement likely to stir up the largest number of poeple and the impetus of patriotism or an ethnocentrism exacerbated (according to the cases), xenophobic discourse is increasingly heard. Alain Mabanckou novelistic production reappropriates the questions raised by migratory movements concerning the Africa/ Europe axis, but also analyzes mobility on the Africa / Africa, Village / city axes, etc. The author thus stands out as a leading figure in migratory literature. This present study, conducted by the sociopoetic method, investigate the fields to which his writing deploys to probe the implications of this phenomenon in order to construct a literary discourse presenting it as a process of repopulation of the current world, which poses to the intersecting spaces of peoples the challenge of building homogeneous and peaceful communities. Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to long-standing anti-Chinese sentiments and prior research highlighting Indonesia's high ethnocentrism, this study aims to delve deeper and explore whether Indonesian Consumer Ethnocentrism and Animosity impact their willingness to purchase Chinese products, with foreign product judgment serving as an intervening variable. This study focuses on Chinese products and involves Indonesian consumers in the Jabodetabek region familiar with purchasing goods made in China. The research employed a non-probability judgment sampling technique and used an electronic questionnaire to collect responses from 150 participants. Utilizing the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method with SmartPLS software. The findings indicate that Indonesian Consumer Ethnocentrism and Consumer Animosity did not negatively affect the willingness to buy Chinese products. Additionally, no mediating effect was observed through Foreign Product Judgment in these relationships. However, the research revealed Indonesian Consumer Ethnocentrism's significant and positive influence on Indonesian Consumer Animosity. Regarding managerial implications, this study recommends that domestic companies highlight local cultural values, while multinational corporations should consider localizing their products to enhance consumer familiarity.

Abstract:
Research on norms and values of pupils in secondary education in The Netherlands has systematically shown that pupils of lower education are more conservative, authoritarian, and ethnocentrist than pupils at higher levels of education. We analysed whether such results can be explained as a methodological artifact, in particular whether there is evidence of a tendency to agree with items irrespective of item content due to less educated pupils having less well developed opinions. 2,000 pupils in The Netherlands, randomly selected from various educational levels participated. Analysis confirmed that pupils at lower educational levels scored higher on items regarding ethnocentrism than those at higher educational levels. Also pupils at lower educational levels had greater difficulty in forming an opinion on the issues mentioned in the ethnocentrism scale. Their agreement, however, was related to the content of the items: reversed items on ethnocentrism, designed to measure a positive attitude towards ethnic minorities, received less agreement among pupils at lower educational levels. A relationship between difficulty in forming an opinion and agreement was not found.

Abstract:

Abstract:
‘Solidarity’ is one of the key concepts of the late Richard Rorty’s philosophy. Arguing that justification of knowledge is a matter of its acceptance by the community, Rorty reduces social relations to the discursive (intertextual or dialogical) ones. Thereby he faces a number of theoretical difficulties. Rorty’s willingness to substitute the idea of objectivity for that of solidarity is at odds with his socio-ethnocentrism. Antirepresentationalist attitude is not shared by the overwhelming majority of Rorty’s ‘cultural peers’, not to mention professional philosophers, but he strongly holds to antirepresentationalism, considering it to be sufficiently justified, not caring about what others think and whether such a strategy is politically relevant or desirable from a pragmatic point of view. Consequently, he endorses the picture of warrant as independent of communal opinion. Western (Anglo-Saxon) ethnocentrism, Rorty argues, is of a special kind: it is the ethnocentrism of a “we-community” (“we liberals”) which is dedicated to enlarging itself and creating more and more variegated, inclusive and heterogeneous society. It’s a worldview of a liberal “ironist” and cosmopolitan who is always aware of the contingency of her language and moral self, and who “has radical and continuing doubts about the final vocabulary she currently uses”. But to say, with Rorty, “We are lucky that our ethnocentrism is based on distrust of itself,” amounts to recognize the truth of anti-ethnocentrism. One who believes in cultural and social progress towards “a global, cosmopolitan, democratic, egalitarian, classless, casteless society” is de facto anti-ethnocentrist. Even if he denies it verbally.

Abstract:
International development ethics is moral reflection on the ends and means of societal and global change. Who should engage in this activity and how should it be done? Should only citizens of a given nation reflect on, and morally evaluate, that country's development goals and strategies? Or do foreigners have a contribution to make as well? Crocker answers these questions by first briefly discussing and critiquing the context within which these questions are frequently debated, namely the ethnocentrism/anti-ethnocentrism and particularism/universalism controversies. He explains the distinction between social insiders and outsiders arguing that in development ethics there are advantages and disadvantages to being both. He urges development ethicists to cultivate a mixture of insider/outsider perspectives, beginning and ending in their own groups, but learning from and benefitting others in the process. Crocker concludes that international and regional progress are closely interrelated. Universalists and ethnocentrists must converge to “think and act globally, regionally, nationally, and locally.”

Abstract:
Being some major problems of our contemporary world, racism and ethnocentrism demand persistent critical scrutiny. One oft-neglected aspect of these problems is how such prejudices are shared and communicated among the members of the dominant group. This study examines Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Sweat (2015), as a dramatic representation of how racism and ethnocentrism are reproduced and communicated as a social cognition. To this aim, the study tries to employ Teun Adrianus Van Dijk’s cognitively-based discourse analysis and focus on some micro-level aspects of racism as a social cognition rather as an abstract historical phenomenon. Contextualizing the play within its socio-historical moment, three trends of schematic attitudes and mental models regarding ethnocentrism_ as Van Dijk’s theory outlines_ are identified from and studied in the play. The findings demonstrate the socio-cognitive dimension of the discourse of racism, particularly the way it is reproduced and communicated among the dominant in-group members. Moreover, the discussion offers some insight on Lynn Nottage’s latest dramatic endeavor in a hard-hitting portrayal of the intersections of race, class, and political economy and in drawing attention to the real meaning of diversity and inclusion in contemporary America.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate, theoretically and empirically, the role of the six dimensions of reconceptualized ethnocentrism in consumer ethnocentrism. The paper investigates both direct and indirect effects of the six dimensions on consumer ethnocentrism, through four theoretically meaningful mediators: nationalism, ethnic ingroup positivity, national ingroup positivity and prejudice against foreigners. Design/methodology/approach This study has used primary data collected from 304 US citizens through online surveys, including measures of demographics, ethnocentrism, consumer ethnocentrism, nationalism and attitudes toward ethnic ingroups, national ingroups and foreigners. Correlational, sequential multiple regression and parallel multiple mediation analyses were conducted to investigate effects of the dimensions of ethnocentrism on consumer ethnocentrism. Findings Regression and mediation analyses, covarying age, education, gender, ethnicity and socio-economic status, showed that ethnocentric purity had a direct effect on consumer ethnocentrism, whereas ethnocentric devotion and exploitativeness had indirect effects, entirely mediated by nationalism. There were no significant effects of the other dimensions of ethnocentrism, ethnic ingroup positivity, national ingroup positivity or prejudice against foreigners. In addition, two demographic variables (white/Anglo Americans and lower socio-economic status) had a direct effect on consumer ethnocentrism, whereas three other variables (gender, education and age) did not. Originality/value This study is first to explore how the dimensions of ethnocentrism relate to consumer ethnocentrism. Although consumer ethnocentrism has often been linked to ethnocentrism, the relationship has never been explicitly studied. Ethnocentrism, defined as ethnic group self-centeredness and self-importance, in which the main role is to ensure ethnic group strength and survival, plays a substantial but mainly indirect role via nationalism in consumer ethnocentrism. This study shows that both direct and indirect processes concerned with ethnic groups play a substantial role in the development of consumer ethnocentrism. Implications of the findings for consumer ethnocentrism and global consumer culture are discussed.

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of ethnocentrism at the Al-Azhar Center Baturaja Islamic Boarding School. The purpose of this research is to find out the forms of ethnocentrism, efforts to reduce it, and the factors that make ethnocentrism persist. Mudir and all Ustadz have made every effort to reduce ethnocentrism. However, inter-ethnic student conflicts still occur due to ethnocentrism. The research approach, qualitative descriptive type, with informant selection techniques, purposive sampling. Collecting data by participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The literature study was analyzed using Miles & Huberman's data analysis techniques (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing). The results of the study show that efforts to reduce ethnocentrism in PP. Al-Azhar Center Baturaja, has been carried out to the fullest, but the ethnocentrism of language persists. Factors that cause ethnocentrism from outside the school environment are very strong.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to extend the understanding of how global brands can positively influence brand trust by introducing two new mediating variables – brand affect and brand innovativeness, and testing the moderating role of consumer ethnocentrism in these relationships. Design/methodology/approach In total, 250 participants completed self-administered online questionnaires in a cross-sectional study in France. Moderated mediation and floodlight analysis were performed. Findings Brand globalness is positively related to brand affect and this, in turn, is positively related to brand trust. The relationship between brand globalness and brand affect is weaker for ethnocentrist consumers. Brand globalness is positively related to brand innovativeness and this, in turn, is positively related to brand trust. The relationship between brand globalness and brand innovativeness is weaker for ethnocentrist consumers. Research limitations/implications A limited number of fast-food brands was analyzed. Future studies should replicate the research model using different product categories to generalize the findings. Practical implications This study offers new opportunities for managers concerned by the optimization of their global brands management. First, the results demonstrate the interest of managers to increase the emotional and affective aspects of their global brands to make them more trustable. Second, brand managers should also emphasize the innovative aspects of their global brand. Indeed, it is essential for practitioners not only to propose frequently new and innovative products to consumers but also to follow the latest trends in their market. The more managers provide new, useful solutions to fulfill consumers’ needs, the more consumers will trust those global brands. Originality/value The mediating role of brand affect and brand innovativeness in the relationship between brand globalness and brand trust gives new insights on an established relationship.

Abstract:
Ethnocentrism refers to the degree to which one sees his or her culture as superior and the standard by which other cultures should be judged (Neuliep, Hintz, XXABSTRACT McCroskey, 2005). Ethnocentrism negatively influences intercultural communication, especially one’s motivation to interact with persons from dif-ferent cultures (Goncz, 2018; Nameni, 2020; Pla, 2021). As ethnocentrism increases, cultural compe-tence decreases. This study seeks to investigate the levels of students’ ethnocentrism. The additional questions there are about differences between Lithuanian and international students’ levels of ethno-centrism in the study. Students completed the Generalized Ethnocentrism (GENE) Scale (Neuliep and McCroskey). The scale, designed to assess people’s ethnocentrism irrespective of cultural background, consists of 22 items assessed via a 5-point Likert-type scale, 15 of which assess ethnocentrism and 7 of which serve as distracters. Assessing ethnocentrism is important for training and development purpos-es. By comparing the levels of ethnocentrism, it can be better assessed whether an educational objec-tive such as “Learning to live together” consisting of developing an understanding of other people and an appreciation of interdependence is being met. This information may be of use in the design of pro-grams to improve the cultural competence of students.

Abstract:
Background: Ethnocentrism is defined as an individual’s tendency to favor in-group members at the expense of out-group members. Recent computer simulations have studied its evolution by modelling cooperative and defective behaviours in a Prisoner’s Dilemma framework. Methods: This paper introduces reciprocity to the study of ethnocentrism and extends Hammond and Axelrod’s agent-based model by simulating the effects of five new genotypic strategies. (1) Results: In stable-state outcomes, although ethnocentrism still dominates, moderate ethnocentrism (in-group cooperation and out-group reciprocity) is more frequent than humanitarianism and is by far the most adaptive out of all reciprocal strategies. Because it is the only reciprocal strategy that cooperates with in-group members, we conclude that it is thanks to in-group cooperation that moderate ethnocentrism is successful, which confirms previous research findings. Additionally, throughout early and late evolutionary patterns, we see that moderate ethnocentrism benefits and suffers from the characteristics of both ethnocentrism and humanitarianism, which may explain why ethnocentrism still emerges as the dominant strategy overall. Conclusion: The strengths of the present model lie in its ability to abstractly model reciprocal behaviours in the study of ethnocentrism and may be more externally valid than Hammond and Axelrod’s original agent-based model. (1) However, this model does not take in account other factors that play a role in human decision-making, such as social context, learning, or development, which could be topics of future computational simulations on ethnocentrism.

Abstract:
Purpose This study contends that consumer ethnocentrism and animosity rest on semantic and episodic memory, respectively. It further examines how the influence of consumer ethnocentrism and animosity on consumer boycott behaviour may vary over time and use the memory theory to explain these temporal differences. Design/methodology/approach Part 1 involved an experiment to demonstrate the relationship between consumer ethnocentrism/animosity and semantic/episodic memory. To determine the temporal characteristics of consumer ethnocentrism and animosity, Part 2 involved two quantitative surveys (one each in China and Japan), followed by another two surveys six months later. Findings Part 1 showed that consumer ethnocentrism and animosity were underpinned by semantic and episodic memory, respectively. Consistent with memory theory, Part 2 found that consumer ethnocentrism was temporally more stable than animosity. Consumer animosity influenced boycott behaviour during but not after the dispute, whereas consumer ethnocentrism influenced boycott behaviour during as well as the dispute. Finally, consumer ethnocentrism was antecedent to consumer animosity, siding with the relationship between semantic and episodic memory. Research limitations/implications Limited to two countries, both with collectivistic culture. A longitudinal approach over multiple phases would further enhance the robustness of the findings. Practical implications Understanding the psychological underpinning of consumer ethnocentrism and animosity would allow firms to develop effective marketing strategies to appeal to consumers’ ethnocentric and animosity dispositions. Originality/value The first study to examine the psychological underpinnings of consumer ethnocentrism and animosity by drawing on the memory theory.

Abstract:
Ethnocentrism is a very sophisticated and complex phenomenon that attracts the attention of many scholars who study it from different angles. One specific approach, undoubtedly from the perspective of behavioural economics, is consumer ethnocentrism. Consumer ethnocentrism as a special phenomenon was created to study the link between marketing and consumer behaviour with the concept of ethnocentrism. This concept has been shown to have a greater impact on purchase intent than some traditional marketing approaches. Ethnocentrism has a significant impact on consumer attitudes towards foreign brands, purchase intentions and purchase decisions for products from Croatia and abroad. The main purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate the relationship between the ethnocentrism of different generations (Baby Boomers and Generation Z) and their purchase intention for domestic and foreign products. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire. 218 members of Generation Z and 223 members of Baby Boomers in the Republic of Croatia were included in the survey. The results showed that the high level of ethnocentrism among baby boomers is positively associated with the intention to purchase domestic products and negatively associated with the baby boomers’ intention to purchase foreign products from China and the former Yugoslavia. In addition, the likelihood of buying domestic products is higher where the level of ethnocentrism is higher. There is no correlation between the ethnocentrism of Generation Z and purchase intentions in general.

Consumer ethnocentrism implies the consumers? orientation to the purchasing of domestic goods, disapproval of purchasing of foreign goods, and the attitude that the buyers of foreign goods are responsible for domestic economic problems and unemployment. This paper presents the results of measurement of consumer ethnocentrism in Central Serbia, five administrative districts precisely (Sumadijski, Pomoravski, Rasinski, Moravicki, and Raski). Results show the moderate level of consumer ethnocentrism, which is now higher than before economic crisis, but still at the same level as the ethnocentrism in other counties of the region (B&H, Croatia, and Montenegro). At the segment level, consumer ethnocentrism is higher among rural, older and male population. Results also display the high and statistically significant correlation between level of consumer ethnocentrism, on one side, and consumer?s preferences and behavior, on the other.

Abstract:
The problems of ethnocentrism are investigated, and the sociopolitical conditions of its relevance to contemporary realities are revealed. The specificity of ethnocentric consciousness and worldview is shown, and its role as a tool of national identification of an ethnic group is analyzed. The dependence of ethnocentrism maintenance on concrete historical conditions is underlined. Inconsistent character of ethnocentrism is investigated and the presence of positive and negative features in it is indicated. The duality of the socio-political and cultural nature of ethnocentrism is revealed by comparing the functions it fulfills: unification and opposition, which under certain conditions develops into an instrument of separation. The role of ethnocentric attitudes and stereotypes in the formation of a positive image of one's own ethnic group, its cultural and national values is traced. The negative nature of absolutized ethnocentrism is shown, as a result of which feelings of intra-ethnic superiority, on the one hand, and prejudice and antagonism towards representatives of other nations, on the other, arise. The reasons for the emergence of negative forms of ethnocentrism, which in practice can lead to manifestations of extremism, nationalism, and chauvinism, are analyzed. The object of the research is the analysis of ethnocentrism phenomenon, and the subject is presented by sociopolitical consequences of such ethnocentrism which leads to various displays of social alienation and opposition. The purpose of the article is to research the essence of the ethnocentrism possessing property of sociopolitical and psychological regulation. The realization of the given purpose assumes the decision of some problems: 1) identify the conditions predisposing to the emergence of ethnocentrism ideology; 2) consider the factors that actualize the attitudes of ethnocentric ideology. Research methodology: the article is based on the use of dialectical approach to the problem in question, methods of analysis and synthesis, systematicity, concreteness, comparison

The study examined the influence of customer loyalty, consumer animosity and purchase intention on consumer ethnocentrism. The research was a cross-sectional survey which made use of purposive sampling technique to select 196 (males = 109; females = 87) undergraduates from two public universities in Nigeria. Standardized scales that measured customer loyalty, consumer animosity, purchase intention and consumer ethnocentrism were adapted into a questionnaire format and used for data collection after theywere revalidated for cultural relevance. Three hypotheses were tested in the study. Results showed significant positive relationships among customer loyalty, consumer animosity, purchase intention and consumer ethnocentrism (p<.01). Additional result revealed significant independent and combined influence of customer loyalty, consumer animosity and purchase intention on consumer ethnocentrism. However, gender did not influence consumer ethnocentrism. It was concluded that customer loyalty, consumer animosity and purchase intention were strongly related to consumer ethnocentrism. The findings of the study were discussed alongside recommendation.

Abstract:
Different attitudes towards the use of English as the MoI within a multilingual environment exist. These attitudes can affect pre-service teachers’ future classroom practices and learners’ performance. In this regard, ethnocentrism, an attitudinal indicator, should be considered when investigating pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards language-in-education issues. Ethnocentrism, the tendency of an individual to identify strongly with their own ethnicity and reject others', draws on the social identity theory, owing to its focus on in-group-out-group distinctions, racism and stereotyping. This article’s primary purpose was to determine if preservice teachers’ attitudes toward language-ineducation issues are related to their degree of ethnocentrism. An embedded mixed- methods research design and a post-positivist paradigm was used. The research site was a private higher education institution with a mono-ethnic student population. A questionnaire using the Language Attitudes of Teachers Scale and the Generalised Ethnocentrism Scale served as the data collection instrument to measure 1 164 pre-service teachers' attitudes towards language-in-education issues and their degree of ethnocentrism. The data showed a statistically significant relationship between the pre-service teachers' attitudes and their degree of ethnocentrism and revealed potential indicators of lower and higher degrees of ethnocentrism. This study recommends that teacher education programmes create awareness of the relationship between attitudes and ethnocentrism to prepare pre-service teachers for multilingual and multicultural classrooms.
