In turn, socially transmitted skills and consejos (advice) are more important to migrant communities' survival and personal and material advancement. This thesis addresses academic writing using two practice-led disciplines, academic literacies and ethnomethodology. It is first concerned to evaluate the possibilities of cooperation between these cognate endeavours, and concludes that where academic literacies provides a locus and set of topics for academic writing studies, ethnomethodology can contribute a sharpening of focus and of analytic tools. Ethnomethodology provides a reassuring message in that it confirms the value of detailed local studies, in this case of literacy. However, it is also the source of critique for those literacy sch

My concern is not only with official literate activities but also subversive ones. To begin with, I tell the story of the thesis from the point of view of a teacher-researcher. I argue that the starting point must be the relative histories of literacy of observer and observed. I thus narrate my own history of literacy. Abstract:
Since the 1990s, urban cultural policy in the UK has been bound to the cause of urban regeneration. Much has been written in examination and critique of this relationship, but what happens when the direction of strategic attention is reversed and civic leadership seeks to regenerate culture itself? The city of Glasgow, having made capital of culture over many decades, has moved towards a strategy for the development of literary Glasgow. This thesis documents a search for those factors crucial to that strategy. The research focuses on literary Glasgow as one aspect of the city’s cultural sector

Abstract:
Financial literacy is perceived as important and yet what does the term financial literacy actually mean? An exploration of literature examining aspects of individuals' financial literacy in particular contexts found a conceptualisation to be absent despite the term being adopted widely. This study addressed this omission and sought a conceptualisation of financial literacy. A reflexive, ethnographic approach was adopted for this exploratory study which examined the experiences of school governors. The study explored a proposed model of financial literacy as a meaningmaking process. A conceptu

Abstract:
This thesis adopts a Literacy as a Social Practice perspective to challenge dominant assumptions about the relationship between young children, literacy and schooling. It takes an ethnographic approach to data collection and analysis to explore what it is like to be a five-year-old child encountering the literacy curriculum in a West London primary school in the 21st Century. The thesis argues that young children’s reproduction of literacy practices in schooling can be understood through the application of William Corsaro’s theorisation of ‘interpretive reproduction’. This thesis concerns the changing predispositions and conditions for contemporary meaning-making in school education. From a socio-cultural perspective, multimodal theory formation is used to find suitable tools and concepts for developing teaching and learning. The overall aims are to investigate and conceptualize meaning-making in school in the frame ofmultimodal theory. Firstly, the research questions are concerned with how teachers work with written; paper-based, expository texts, and secondly, with students' meaning-making, working with meaning-offerings from different modes and media. Abstract:
This study investigated the home literacy practices of six children, aged 5-7 years, who are learning three or more languages and live in Qatar, in a middle-to-upper-middle class context. In particular, the study examined their biliteracy development and explored identity and agency issues. A particular interest was their use of media, technology and popular culture at home. This study draws on theoretical perspectives offered by the New Literacy Studies, and the fields of semiotics and multimodalities as well as studies in literacy and popular culture.
