The article presents an analysis of the commentary to the sura “The Opening One” (al-Fatiha) and the first five ayats of the sura “the Cow” (al-Baqara) by the Russian Muslim theologian-reformer Musa Jarullah Bigiyev (1874-1949) “Fiqh al-Qurʼan” (The Understanding of the Qurʼan). It is a unique example of the jadidist reading of the Qurʼan and contains the basic principles of this movement — the rejection of the imitation of tradition, the use of the methodology of European science, humanistic intention expressed in anthropocentrism, rationalism, social orientation and religious inclusiveness.

Abstract:
Anger is one of the Human beingʼs main irritations. Irritation can be defined as a state of total confusion where all activities of a human being come to a stop, the focus being only on irritation. Anger originally is attributed to a psychological source because it results from either external or internal influence. It is this that distinguishes irritation from confusion. Anger is one of the irritations that have been shown in the Glorious Qurʼan, for it has taken different forms or lexical items, as follows, ghadhab (anger), ghayz(rage), sakhat (condemnation). Due to the diversity of the linguistic signs that refer to anger – irritation, the present paper has been divided into an introduction and three sections. The Introduction aims at shrwing what anger – irritation is in the field of psychology, accounting for itʼs incentives and causes. It also shows that there are two types of anger: healthy ( or instructive ) anger, and destructive anger. Section one has dealt with the various types of anger in the Glorious Qurʼan. In section two we have discussed the different manifestations of rage and itʼs types in the Qurʼan. Section Three shed light on wrath and itʼs linguistic signs as they appeared in the Qurʼanie text. The conclusion offers the main findings of the study.

This article discusses the financial stability of Islamic banking in Malaysia by focusing on the analysis of current perspectives. In addition, it also discusses the references used to describe Islamic-based financial stability. To achieve this objective, this study would analyse the resources to ascertain the arguments on how such financial stability is viewed from an Islamic perspective. This study was conducted using a qualitative method through library research by searching for references from sources such as al-Qurʼan and its interpretation, al-Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and also arguments by Islamic scholars. The results of this study showed that certain texts in al-Qurʼan and al-Hadith, as well as the views of scholars, acknowledge that financial stability has a strong foundation based on authentic sources. In the context of Islamic banking in Malaysia, various aspects need to be taken into account to ensure that these banking institutions continue to remain relevant in the domestic and international financial arena. In this regard, to ensure the stability and strength of Islamic banking institutions in Malaysia, these institutions need to fully adapt the banking model recommended by the shariʻah, which would not only strengthen this industry but also make it capable of facing challenges and being resistant to financial crises and economic imbalances.

Elmir, Mouna. "M. A. Abdel Haleem’s Approach in Translating Qur’anic Verses of War: A Critical Discourse Analysis." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/19792.

Full text
Abstract:
Various translations of the Qur’an have been produced by Muslims and non-Muslims. These translators have applied different strategies to produce informative and faithfully translated versions of the Qur’an, understood by people from different social and educational backgrounds. The significance of maintaining the religious aspects of the Qur’an is reflected in the misconceptions of many verses in the Qur’an to date. To this end, the main argument that generates the research questions of this study is whether the contextual meaning of the twenty verses concerning war are clearly explained in Qur’an translations, and to what extent the translator is responsible for any misconceptions. Having investigated several Qur’an translations and identified different strategies adopted by translators, the present study critically analyses one of the most influential and contemporary translations: M. A. S. Abdel Haleem’s translation (2010). This study analyses the English equivalents given by Abdel Haleem to the twenty verses concerning war from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective. This analysis is conducted at micro and macro levels. At the micro level, textual analysis is undertaken to pinpoint the lexical choices and translation strategies adopted by Abdel Haleem by drawing on Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995) method of textual analysis in translation, and Nida’s (1964) translation theory. At the macro-level, the three-dimensional framework of Fairclough (text, discourse and context) has been used to answer the research questions from a CDA perspective. The textual analysis found Abdel Haleem’s application of grammatical–syntactical structures most conventional to the function of the target text, simple language, explanatory footnotes and informative language, reveal his intention to eliminate misconceptions and educate Western readers. However, the contextual analysis clarified Abdel Haleem’s motivations to produce this translation were based on his view that an Arab Muslims is more capable and responsible of spreading the teachings of Islam, because of his socio-cultural background. The analysis also showed socio-cultural and political ideology played a significant role in the way he translated the verses concerning war. For instance, Abdel Haleem employed the free translation strategies of modulation, adaptation and transposition in the translation of these verses because of his vast understanding of the Qur’anic language as an Arab who gained his higher degrees in Egypt. Then, by living in the West with great interaction with mainstream society, he was able to draw an intersection between the traditional and modern interpretations of the message of the Qur’an, in a manner that suited the needs of Muslims in a contemporary world. Being an academic and scholar in his field, he was aware of the significance of having a translation of the Qur’an that is easily understood by the majority in the Western society to serve as an effective tool to enhance interfaith understanding.

Hagberg, Sten. "Between Peace and Justice : Dispute Settlement between Karaboro Agriculturalists and Fulbe Agro-Pastoralists in Burkina Faso." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kulturantropologi och etnologi, 1998. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-894.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is about dispute settlement in the Comoé Province, Burkina Faso. It focuses on ways in which four principal categories of actors-Karaboro agriculturalists, Fulbe agro-pastoralists, Tiefo Masters of the Earth, and local government officials-handle disputes related to landed resources. The study is based on four years of multi-sited fieldwork between 1988 and 1996, as well as studies of literature and archival material. To understand processes of peace and justice in dispute settlement, the study provides detailed accounts of internal socio-political and cultural dynamics within and between the main groups of actors as well as an ethnography of two cases of violent conflict. The main argument is that dispute settlement prevails in a social field of relations and rights. It is, on the one hand, a matter of mobilising key social relations in order to promote peace, to forgive and make future co-habitation possible. Host-stranger relations as well as those of neighbourhood and friendship are, for example, put to the fore. On the other hand, it is also a matter of claiming rights and attend to what different actors perceive as justice. Rights are articulated in different organisational structures such as the Land and Tenure Reorganisation, the Trade Union of Graziers and the Hunting Organisation. While external actors claim rights in public discourse, in practice they are likely to mobilise relations to 'arrange an affair'. Local actors promote ideologically the maintenance of social relations (for peace and prosperity) in dispute settlement, but look for their rights in practice. Disputes are thus located between peace and justice, but in the shadow of violent conflict. The study concludes that dispute settlement between Karaboro agriculturalists and Fulbe agro-pastoralists should not only be understood as a political run by different actors to gain in disputes, but needs to be situated within the domain of what is regarded as morally and socially 'acceptable' to public opinion beyond ethnic and socio-political boundaries.

Abstract:
Gastronomy and traditional cuisine play an important role in building national and personal identities. In an era of food systems globalization (production, processing and retail) and dietary models in which transnational food companies are expanding rapidly in the Republic of Moldova, there is a risk that the national gastronomic specificity will be blurred and the strong and confident feeling of national identity and culture will disappear. During a study on traditional gastronomy, the housewives mentioned a traditional dish known as sour borscht obtained from the fermentation of wheat bran, cornmeal and other ingredients that are meant to give the borscht its special aroma, color and taste. In order to document the culinary heritage associated with this traditional dish, a field study was conducted on the characteristics of the preparation process, ingredients and terms used in various regions of the Republic of Moldova as well as superstitions and traditions related to sour borscht.

Abstract:
The paper presents the results of the study of the techniques of joining the parts of traditional shirts. The analysis of museum pieces presents various techniques for combining landmarks with a functional and aesthetic role. In traditional holiday women’s shirts, the joining of of parts on the lines arranged in the accessible visual perception area techniques of joining by keys of different complexity, integrated solutions of edge processing elements by crocheting and joining techniques by keys („cheițe”) were used. The joining lines of the parts arranged in areas with low visibility show applications of simple joining techniques such as stitches before the needle, after the needle, the processing of the edges of the parts with scalloped points. Traditional men’s holiday shirts used the joining of keys in some models, but shirts were also made in which the application of the techniques of joining by keys is missing. In the usual traditional shirts, the techniques of joining by keys are very rare. The terminal lines of the parts of the holiday shirts, as well, present various processing and decoration techniques applying the processing with «brezărău», the processing with crocheted lace.

Abstract:
In this article, based on the materials of the author’s search ethnographic expeditions аnd published works, by the example of ritual culture the result of breaking tradition of Ukrainians from Western Boykivshchyna, who were displaced within the framework of ’Operation Vistula’ have been analysed. It was the forced resettlement of approximately 150,000 Ukrainians and mixed Polish-Ukrainian families from the territory of Rzeszów, Lublin and Krakow provinces (Voivodeships) to the western and northern territories of Poland (1947–1950). After the deportation of the Ukrainians, the processes of accelerated breaking of both their the way of life and the unique world of traditional culture with its archaic customs and rites have begun. This was actively facilitated by local government policies aimed at inciting inter-ethnic tensions, creating difficult relations with representatives of various regional groups of the Polish ethnic community, as well as censure and ridicule of the traditional elements of the folk culture of re-settlers by their neighbors. Nevertheless, with the help of tradition (in ritual form or in form of their memories), re-settlers from Western Boykivshchyna continue to keep memory of their own (non) traumatic past, and, based on it, construct their own identity in the perspective of modernity.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the results of an empirical study of Moldovan youth on the perception of their group in the past, present and future. The sample consisted of 200 respondents, Moldovans, university students in Chisinau. The basis for dividing the group of Moldovan youth into “optimists” and “pessimists” was their attitude to the future of their ethnic group. An empirical study of the characteristics of the perception of their group in the time perspective among young people of Moldovans revealed a great variability from “optimists”, who accounted for 43%, to “pessimists”, – 29%, which, according to researchers, is a reflection of the socio-cultural transformations taking place in Moldovan society.

Abstract:
In the article “The Building Ritual System of Gagauz People (On the Formulation of the Question)”, building rituals are considered in relation to the stages of the construction of housing and getting used to it. These include rituals performed prior to housing construction, rituals accompanying the construction, and rituals performed upon moving to a new house. An attempt was made to reveal the semantics of building rituals and to highlight the role of housing in the Gagauz perception of the world. Gagauz tradition has it that all the stages of house construction and the process of inhabiting it are accompanied by rituals, among which the most important are the rituals associated with the idea of the world tree and with the sacrifice for the building. According to popular belief, the performed rituals ensured the security and prosperity to its residents.

Atkinson, Dan, and Alex Hale, eds. From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.126.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four headings: 1. From Source to Sea: River systems, from their source to the sea and beyond, should form the focus for research projects, allowing the integration of all archaeological work carried out along their course. Future research should take a holistic view of the marine and maritime historic environment, from inland lakes that feed freshwater river routes, to tidal estuaries and out to the open sea. This view of the landscape/seascape encompasses a very broad range of archaeology and enables connections to be made without the restrictions of geographical or political boundaries. Research strategies, programmes From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report iii and projects can adopt this approach at multiple levels; from national to site-specific, with the aim of remaining holistic and cross-cutting. 2. Submerged Landscapes: The rising research profile of submerged landscapes has recently been embodied into a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action; Submerged Prehistoric Archaeology and Landscapes of the Continental Shelf (SPLASHCOS), with exciting proposals for future research. Future work needs to be integrated with wider initiatives such as this on an international scale. Recent projects have begun to demonstrate the research potential for submerged landscapes in and beyond Scotland, as well as the need to collaborate with industrial partners, in order that commercially-created datasets can be accessed and used. More data is required in order to fully model the changing coastline around Scotland and develop predictive models of site survival. Such work is crucial to understanding life in early prehistoric Scotland, and how the earliest communities responded to a changing environment. 3. Marine & Maritime Historic Landscapes: Scotland’s coastal and intertidal zones and maritime hinterland encompass in-shore islands, trans-continental shipping lanes, ports and harbours, and transport infrastructure to intertidal fish-traps, and define understanding and conceptualisation of the liminal zone between the land and the sea. Due to the pervasive nature of the Marine and Maritime historic landscape, a holistic approach should be taken that incorporates evidence from a variety of sources including commercial and research archaeology, local and national societies, off-shore and onshore commercial development; and including studies derived from, but not limited to history, ethnology, cultural studies, folklore and architecture and involving a wide range of recording techniques ranging from photography, laser imaging, and sonar survey through to more orthodox drawn survey and excavation. 4. Collaboration: As is implicit in all the above, multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches are essential in order to ensure the capacity to meet the research challenges of the marine and maritime historic environment. There is a need for collaboration across the heritage sector and beyond, into specific areas of industry, science and the arts. Methods of communication amongst the constituent research individuals, institutions and networks should be developed, and dissemination of research results promoted. The formation of research communities, especially virtual centres of excellence, should be encouraged in order to build capacity.
