Abstract:
The project urgency is evidenced by the measurement of subject-matter popularity on the Internet – a query to the Net on the topic of the subject gives 18900 results, and a novelty is defined by specification, for instance, the “Universal Image Dictionary” query gives “No results found for” and 1 result M24.RU – 10 unknown: monsters, stairs, funnels and keys… www.m24.ru/articles/112668/ … The project offered supposes the creation of the bank of different images already existing and having a wide distribution and which can be a means of international communication for people having no any other channel for information exchange. Such images could include common gestures, traffic signs, signs in transport, in the streets, in public accommodations and in state offices. They will include both single images, and their combinations forming a single conceptual complex (rules of table etiquette, on transport, and at the stadium etc.). It should be emphasized clearly that the dictionary offered is intended for interpersonal communication. A computer identification of images cannot be in this case a basic purpose for project realization. The orientation to interpersonal communication gives us a possibility to choose images for the dictionary and, what is not less significant, to set problems actually solvable at every stage of its creation.

Abstract:
The subject of the article are selected elements of linguistic etiquette, strictly speaking polite expressions used in the former Russian army. The author chooses her linguistic material from literary works of selected XIX century Russian writers (Tołstoj, Staniukowicz, Leskow). Specific relations appearing in the army (strong hierarchy and discipline) make it possible to present convention and usefulness of linguistic etiquette. It is used there as a tool to impose discipline, express respect or disrespect, avoid or solve conflicts. The article focused on the forms of linguistic etiquette in the most typical situations: when a higher rank official turns to a lower one or the opposite, the equally ranked turning to one another, and military men turning to each other and civilians. It results from the analysis of the linguistic etiquette presented in the literary works that the writers perceived the army and navy structure as highly hierarchical. Social background decided about man’s value in the army, which was reflected in the conventions of linguistic etiquette.

Abstract:
The dialogue style was one of the innovative methods in the noble Qur’an text, that wasn’t common in Arabic speech; it had clearly emerged in the stories of the prophets, peace be upon them with their people, whereby through this unique method the Holy Qur’an had raised Arab understandings to high levels in research and debate, and laid the foundations of this art which The Arabs were not familiar with before the Qur’an revelation. This research aims to study and investigate the types of Quranic dialogues, its objectives and controls, as it has appeared in the verses of the Noble Qur’an, through which the researchers have attempted to uncover the most important controls and foundations that ensure the success of the dialogue, in order to be effective in resolving crises and in treating problems. The importance of this research is evident in the need for Muslims today to consolidate the foundations of constructive dialogue among themselves, and the foundations of debate with the followers of other denominations. The methodology that has been used in this research is the inductive analytical method, i.e. by collecting most of the dialogue patterns that are mentioned in the Qur’an, categorising them, and laying down the foundations and controls that influence the direction of the dialogue and its success. The study concluded that the dialogue is an authentic Quranic advocacy method. It does not mean indoctrinating a specific opinion or thought from one side, rather it influences each party to declare their opinion, and come with their evidence. This leads to achieving rapprochement and homogeneity among the opponents, that is provided that the etiquette of dialogue is adhered to and is well presented. Among the most important results is that a successful dialogue has many factors, at the forefront of which are recognition that disagreement is of the Sunnah of Allah in His creation, and the recognition that working towards an agreement is an obligation to achieve the concept of a single nation, and to refer to the principles rather than disputing the branches, as well as to start from the points of agreement and not the points of difference, focusing on the purposes not the means.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis article focuses on a single episode of racial interaction in 1931 in order to highlight competing notions of honor and respectability in a shared colonial society. This story elucidates how Africans and whites unraveled and rebuilt ‘racial etiquette’, the tacit code that guided individual encounters between blacks and whites and that were so vital to the expression of colonial power. In moments of transition, such as the early 1930s in Southern Rhodesia, the minutiae of racial etiquette were confusing, and this allowed for some dialogue between Africans and whites about what constituted proper behavior. As this story makes clear, Africans were as much a part of composing racial etiquette as whites, despite – indeed, because of – the latter's political power.

The article analyzes the features of Chechen communicative behavior in the context of the emotional component. It is noted that self-control dominates in the traditional communicative behavior of Chechens. Free expression of emotions in Chechen society is perceived as inappropriate, and suppression of emotions is characteristic of both men and women and belongs to one of the advantages of the Chechen mentality. It is concluded that the key idea of the communicative picture of the world of the Chechens is manifested in the model "yakh hilar - yukh lar yar" (honor to have - to keep a face), which determines their worldview and morality. The end-to-end line, expressing the emotional component of the communicative behavior of the Chechens - "sobar" (restraint, self-control)), considered in the following directions: everyday life - family, society - social etiquette, rituals - ritual etiquette).

Abstract:
Opening ParagraphAfrican men, like men everywhere, have dominated the public sphere, holding the vast majority of official positions of power and authority. In pre-colonial African societies women were formally subordinate to male authority and male dominance was buttressed by an ideology of male superiority and a status system where women showed deference to men. But formal systems, ideologies and codes of etiquette are not realities. In some societies women wielded considerable influence and authority, so much in fact that these systems have been characterised as dual-sex political systems with each sex managing its own affairs (Okonjo, 1976). Women were not so much involved in hierarchical orders of relationships as in complementary, mutually dependent relationships.

Abstract:
This article is about changes in dominant modes of social conduct, particularly involving relationships between the sexes. Changes in behavioural codes and ideals were noted in the course of a comparative analysis of etiquette books published in the Netherlands from 1930 to 1985. There was a gap of approximately thirteen years (1966-79) during which, with one exception, no books on this subject were published. There was, however, an upsurge of books on liberation and self-realization, coupled with a relative loosening of behavioural codes and ideals. Since the start of the 1980s, there appears to have been a tightening of these codes and ideals, both as regards relationships between men and women and in general. These changes are presented as developments in the sense of informalization and formalization, aspects of civilizing processes. The article commences with a short elaboration upon the concepts of informalization and formalization, goes on to present the results of the comparative analysis of the etiquette books, and concludes that nowadays a (re)formalization of preceding informalization is taking place, a stage in the long-term process of informalization.

When Isabella Beeton wrote in her Preface to Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management (1861) that, in order to compete with the attractions of clubs, well-ordered taverns and dining-houses that serve men so well, the mistress must be conversant with cookery and all other arts of making and keeping a comfortable home, she was making use of a narrative that would have been familiar to many of her readers. Both male and female writers of etiquette and cookery books aimed at the bourgeoisie attempted to persuade their readers of the necessity of household management by drawing on this narrative.

Abstract:
Renaissance in England is frequently referred to as the „Golden Age”, but despite countless innovative views and ideas, many aspects of social life did not develop simultaneously. The analysis of the 16th-century courtesy books for women enables readers to have a closer look at the Renaissance ideal of a perfect woman and the upbringing process, to which she was subjected in order to reach perfection. The most valued traits, defined mainly by men, still did not let women free themselves from stiff etiquette rules imposed on them several centuries earlier. While a man was spreading his Renaissance wings, a woman was silently staring at the ground beneath her feet.

Abstract The fact that women working is not a strange thing in the modern era and today's advanced technology. It has become commonplace when we meet the usual work done by men is also done by women. Gender issues in the field of employment are increasingly liquid in the absence of restrictions on the work of men and women's work. The conditions paradox symbolize the concept of work according to the methodology of the Salafis. They clung to the rules, principles, and beliefs that differentiate and limit the type of work between men and women. Convinced that the best place for women is in the private sphere. Where possible women work outside the home must comply with the rules and etiquette that have been determined by the Salafi manhaj. Writing these reflections are trying to dig deeper into the practice of symbolic violence within the meaning of women's work according to the Salafi manhaj. Abstract:
The article attempts to describe the methods of translation from Polish into Russian of such a communicatively significant form of etiquette as conversion. These word constructions containing the name and often the titles of nobility of the one addressed to were used in the Polish speech of the XVII century, as the Polish writer H. Sienkiewicz pointed out in his historical novel “Pan Volodyevsky”. Various forms of appeals, which were used by Polish nobles (gentry), directly indicate their communicative importance in this social environment. Here the lights and the gender issue, since communication occurs among men, ladies and also in mixed gender groups. Thus, this gender issue had to be solved by the translator when translating the novel by H. Sienkiewicz into Russian. In the article by comparison of fragments of the Polish (author’s) and Russian texts with participation of such units it is shown how constructions and terms of this communicative group were translated into Russian.

The theoretical approach suggests that both possibilities can happen due to the simple assumptions of the economic theories used in this research. Evidence shows a clear trend for a positive relationship between women’s working hours and the number of single men. However, the trend weakens over the time, possibly due to stabilisation of women’s wages more recently.

Abstract:
In nonhumans, the sex steroid testosterone regulates reproductive behaviors such as fighting between males and mating. In humans, correlational studies have linked testosterone with aggression and disorders associated with poor impulse control, but the neuropsychological processes at work are poorly understood. Building on a dual-process framework, we propose a mechanism underlying testosterone’s behavioral effects in humans: reduction in cognitive reflection. In the largest study of behavioral effects of testosterone administration to date, 243 men received either testosterone or placebo and took the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT), which estimates the capacity to override incorrect intuitive judgments with deliberate correct responses. Testosterone administration reduced CRT scores. The effect remained after we controlled for age, mood, math skills, whether participants believed they had received the placebo or testosterone, and the effects of 14 additional hormones, and it held for each of the CRT questions in isolation. Our findings suggest a mechanism underlying testosterone’s diverse effects on humans’ judgments and decision making and provide novel, clear, and testable predictions.

Abstract:
Abstract Previous research has shown that men’s mating motivation may increase following exposure to women’s body odor during ovulation. In the current study, we examined whether exposure to women’s fertility odor cues influences social perception among men, while focusing on the role of men’s relationship status in moderating this reaction. We collected body odor samples from 43 women during ovulation and during the luteal phase and exposed 85 men to these odor samples while they performed an emotion recognition task and an interpersonal perception task. Single men were better at recognizing emotional facial expressions following exposure to odor cues of high fertility as compared with odor cues of low fertility. No such effect was identified in pair-bonded men. In support of this finding, single men became more accurate on the interpersonal perception task following exposure to odor cues of high fertility, while pair-bonded men became less accurate after such exposure. Collectively, the results suggest that exposure to women’s fertility odor cues improves social perception among single men, while it impairs such perception among pair-bonded men. We suggest that these effects may result from increased mating motivation following exposure to odor cues of fertility, which in turn encourages accurate social perception among single men while promoting an avoidant attitude toward social stimuli among pair-bonded men.

Abstract:
This experiment investigated whether forced single-nostril breathing differentially affects cognitive abilities presumed to be mediated by the left and right cerebral hemispheres. Phase I was an attempted replication of a reported sex difference in the effects of unilateral breathing on verbal versus spatial performance and Phase II was a study of breathing effects on different verbal and spatial tests. No differences associated with breathing condition were found in the replication study. In Phase II, men breathing through the right nostril scored significantly lower than men in the control condition on a letter-matching test although they did not differ significantly from men in the left-nostril condition on that test. There were no significant breathing-related differences on two spatial tests, and no differences associated with breathing condition for the women. Assessment of nostril dominance before and after cognitive testing showed that the forced-breathing exercise did not significantly alter subjects' nostril dominance. A significant left-nostril bias was found in this sample.

Abstract:
Abstract The speech act of greeting is one of the most frequent linguistic interactional routines performed among the Maasai of Arusha in Tanzania. The structure of their greetings demonstrates a number of culturally specific features of Maasai society, illuminated by analysing data collected through interviews and non-participatory observations of both men and women. The structure of Maasai greetings highlights the importance of maintaining gentility and exercising deference in everyday affairs. Politeness and civility are demonstrated by acknowledging vertical ranking between those who greet each other; sustaining propriety is determined by recognition of social status and by a heightened gender sensitivity which is ever present. Good manners are performed not only by following verbal codes scrupulously, such as tone of voice and word choice; non-verbal signals are just as important in the demonstration of Maasai etiquette; these include the posture adopted when a greeting is initiated, the adjustment of spatial distance and by whom once a greeting has commenced, the manner of shaking hands, as well as the length of time spent greeting.

Abstract:
Sex differences in MBA careers were investigated to test three hypotheses: (1) men will advance in management more than women, (2) women will show more emotional reaction to career stress than men, (3) single women will progress more equally to single men than will be true for married women compared to married men. All three of the hypotheses were supported. Men earned more. In 1990 Kazal-Thresher found starting sex segregation by industry and occupation to explain some differences in earnings. Men worked longer hours, had more stable employment, achieved a general manager position more frequently, and had higher job satisfaction than women. Women, especially married women, expressed more frustration about careers than did men. Single women were not significantly different from single men in earnings, hours of work, stability of employment, and job satisfaction. Single women did not achieve a position as general manager as frequently as did single men.

Abstract:
The present study aims to consider the specifics of teaching rules of conduct in children in an extended Kumyk family of the XIX – early XX century. Basing on the analysis of a wide range of sources and literature, as well as field ethnographic material obtained in the regions of Kumyks’ concentration, the authors present various aspects of etiquette interaction and pedagogical methods of Kumyk upbringing in the XIX - early XX century. The peculiarities of moral education in Kumyk children, on the example of an extended patriarchal family, have been revealed, since etiquette relations were more pronounced in such families than in a small (nuclear) one. It has been noted that the traditional upbringing among Kumyks was varied and oriented towards the adoption of gender stereotypes by children. The stereotypes of “masculinity” and “femininity”, gender behavior, gender roles and organization of age-sex labor division in a family are analyzed in the paper. On the basis of extensive field material, the authors give examples of various types of games and children activities, which highlight the differences in gender upbringing and the manifestation of “masculinity” and “femininity” in games. It has been established that the existing division of gender roles in a Kumyk family, under which men performed vocational roles, and women – the family ones, formed in children socially accepted ideas of the masculine and feminine types. In the era of globalization, when the institute of traditional family is on the brink of extinction, and gender-neutral upbringing is actively propagated in the mass media, the study of gender stereotypes and features of gender behavior and upbringing in traditional culture has a major scientific and practical importance. The conclusions of the article may be of interest to members of education and culture, or used when writing works in ethnography and pedagogy. The relevance of this study is due to the interest of scholars in various fields and the general public in gender issues and problems of upbringing.

Kustra, Tyler. "Make Love, Not War: Do Single Young Men Cause Political Violence?" International Studies Quarterly 63, no. 4 (August 7, 2019): 890–96. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/isq/sqz034.

Abstract:
Abstract This article calls into question the theory that being single drives young men to commit political violence. It finds that, while the proportion of young men in a country has a statistically significant impact on the level of political violence in the country, whether or not these men are married has no additional impact. The result may appear to contradict the individual-level evidence that shows that young, unmarried men commit the overwhelming majority of political violence. Rebels and terrorists, however, make up only a small part of a country's population. If participating in political violence caused young men to be single, this would have a negligible impact on a country's proportion of single young men, thereby explaining why marital status is uncorrelated with political violence at the national level. It would also explain why the individual-level evidence shows that most terrorists and guerillas are single.

Madigan, Michael L. "Age-Related Differences in Muscle Power during Single-Step Balance Recovery." Journal of Applied Biomechanics 22, no. 3 (August 2006): 186–93. http://dx.doi.org/10.1123/jab.22.3.186.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate agerelated differences in muscle power during a surrogate task of trip recovery. Participants included 10 healthy young men (19–23 years old) and 10 healthy older men (65–83). The task involved releasing participants from a forward-leaning posture. After release, participants attempted to recover their balance using a single step of the right foot. Muscle power at the hip, knee, and ankle of the stepping limb were determined from the product of joint angular velocity and joint torque. Muscle powers during balance recovery followed a relatively consistent pattern in both young and older men, and showed effects of both lean and age. Interestingly, the effects of age did not always involve smaller peak power values in the older men as expected from the well-documented loss of muscle power with aging. Older men exhibited smaller peak muscle power at the knee and larger peak muscle power at the ankle and hip compared to young men. The increases in muscle power at the ankle and hip may result from a neuromuscular adaptation aimed at improving balance recovery ability by compensating for the age-related loss of muscle function.

Yarasheva, Aziza V., and Natalia V. Alikperova. "Gender differences in financial behavior of population." POPULATION 23, no. 2 (2020): 51–60. http://dx.doi.org/10.19181/population.2020.23.2.5.

Full text
Abstract:
The article analyzes various studies in the field of population behavior in the financial market. Since psychological factors related to mentality, temperament, and risk-taking play an important role in implementing financial strategies, along with rational motives, women and men may behave differently. An attempt is made to answer the question: whether there are significant gender differences in financial behavior models, and whether this aspect requires a close attention of scientists who study trends and features of forming strategies of Russians when making economic decisions. A review of Russian and foreign studies aimed at investigation of gender characteristics of investment behavior and financial literacy is performed. Traditionally, in most families, men are responsible for the financial situation, they are more concerned with providing for their family, earning and multiplying money. Women, as a rule, are more concerned with the «inner» side of family life — so that everyone is fed, dressed, shod, and provided with everything necessary. Therefore, if both of them have decided to invest, the emphasis in the well-known formula «save and multiply» is made by men on the second word, and by women — on the first. As a result, women are significantly less likely to take risks and more likely to make profitable transactions. Men are more prone to take risks, for them it is not so much the result of investment that is important, as the excitement, and work in the financial markets is somewhat akin to hunting. Probably there are some primitive triggers at the level of the subconscious that are blocked by the norms of morality and etiquette in society. For women, stability is much more important, and the desire to maintain a sense of security prevails rather than a thirst for risk. The study revealed poor elaboration of this topic, lack of Russian research on gender-specific financial behavior due to the underdevelopment of the Russian financial market, as well as the lack of sufficient supply of financial instruments for further accumulation of experience in implementing their strategies by representatives of both genders.

Reynolds, Jill. "Patterns in the Telling: Single Women's Intimate Relationships with Men." Sociological Research Online 11, no. 3 (September 2006): 98–110. http://dx.doi.org/10.5153/sro.1381.

Full text
Abstract:
This article explores some ways in which women not living with an intimate partner talk about their relationships with men. Data are considered in relation to social theorising on the changing nature of intimate relationships. The analysis makes use of traditions in narrative analysis and critical discursive psychology to identify some patterns in the telling, including common cultural resources that are drawn on by speakers. Patterned ways of portraying relationships identified in the data discussed here include a self-blame approach in describing extreme behaviour from the man concerned, and a repudiation of any intention of commitment through talk of the positive features of relationships with unavailable men. A further way of talking introduces a ‘new realism’ in which relationships are depicted as right for a time but dispensable when their time is up. The analysis suggests that concepts of individualisation and impermanence in relationships provide new cultural resources that women can draw on in providing a self-narrative. The data demonstrate the detailed rhetorical work involved in producing a positive account of the self as a single woman.
