Full textThe aim of the present study is to anaylise the representation involved in the symbolic universe of etiquette from an anthropological view, based on a privileged field of empirical observation - the etiquette courses taking place in the city of São Paulo in the 1990´s - and also on the media (web sites, books, magazines and tv programmes), which build a cultural fund that provides the public with such symbolic goods. At last we have analysed how the symbolic and conflitive aspects that come out from this varied help us to understand the "web of meanings" created by the individuals involved in this cultural practice.

This research aims to investigate the trajectory of the literature on civility and the manuals of etiquette in Brazil, reflecting upon core aspects of the histori-cal and cultural context in which they were placed. Using Norbert Elias s concept of civilizing process, it was sought to understand the historical context that marked the arrival of this type of literature in Brazil, especially in the form of eti-quette manuals, as a consequence of the Europeanization of customs initiated with the coming of the Portuguese Court to Rio de Janeiro. An analysis of the discourses present in two manuals of etiquette: New Manual of Good Taste (Verardi, [1857] 1900) and Guide of Good Manners (Carvalho, [1961] 1966) were undertaken. It was sought to draw points of transformation and permanence of the behaviors in the two manuals, focusing on aspects of hygiene, body functions, control of gestures and habits at the table. This work discusses how the normative discourses brought by the literature of civility may reveal the gears of the con-sumption and also the modern society.

This doctoral thesis focuses on the analysis of the communicative dimension of the tie. Until today, this clothing accessory has been studied above all in the field of aesthetics, and this research aims for the first time to examine it from the communicative perspective. Based on the analysis of the use of the tie in the fields of protocol, ceremonial and etiquette, theoretical lines typical of communication have been proposed, such as semiotics, to understand its magnitude as a symbol; he has investigated symbolic interactionism to explain how it can determine social relations; It has been analyzed as a phenomenon typical of non-verbal communication and, finally, Gestalt theory has been revised to assess the formal perceptual aspects. The thesis, through qualitative prospecting based on in-depth interviews with elite experts, highlights the current situation of the tie in Spain at the beginning of the 21st century. It points to a certain decrease in the use of the tie among men of almost all ages, but at the same time augur's continuity, especially because of the values attributed to those who wear it.

The genesis of the early Roman Christian basilica occurred at a moment of historical transition as the emperor and the empire began the process of converting to the Christian religion. Typically, this era has received scholarly treatment either as the end of a time in which the emperor held supremacy or the beginning of one dominated by bishops. The exact moment of `redefinition,' however, has rarely attracted attention because of the assertive oligarchies that bookended this transitional period, the Roman emperor and the Christian pontificate. Richard Krautheimer, who focused much of his attention on the historical figure of Constantine, promoted the idea that the basilica was Constantine's way of imbuing the Christian church with imperial authority and connotations; effectively, Constantine forever changed the shape of Christian churches. This explanation of the pivotal moment of genesis has been generally accepted and the moment of transition has not received much attention from scholars since. In my thesis I will focus primarily on this moment of transition. I will explore the political climate of the government, the authoritative hierarchy of the church, and the precedents of the very first early Roman Christian basilica, at the Lateran. The method that I will employ is the theory of etiquette, operating under the assumption that in every historical period, there is a general understanding of what is `fitting' and `appropriate.' Because of the paucity of material evidence and the unreliability of surviving primary sources, it is generally impossible to make incontestable statements about who was responsible for the early Roman Christian basilica, what they intended to convey to the Roman population, and how appropriate it would have been given the social decorum of the time. Thus, conclusions of this nature are not the primary focus of this thesis. Instead I will concentrate on reconstructing who the most appropriate agent of authority is, and how suitable the early Roman Christian basilica might have seemed.

Full textThe writer of this Masters dissertation, presented in six chapters, has practised for many years as a social worker in the rural, developing country of the Republic of Bophuthatswana. The subject of the research study was however prompted by the time she spent as a protocol officer in the Department of Foreign Affairs in Bophuthatswana. Search for an academic background on protocol (for reference in her practice) having proved fruitless, she undertook the research now reported upon. The study has been carried out using the techniques of participant observation, process recording, and elementary content analysis. Documentary sources were also used. Otherwise the work is descriptive, and does not make use of statistical techniques. The study examines the relationship between the function of protocol on the one hand and social policy and social administration on the other. The diary technique as a method of data collection was used. Since this is a typological study of the tasks of a protocol officer, the daily activities of the officer were recorded in the diary (but not timed) over a period of six months. This was regarded as a sufficiently representative period. After six months of data collection, the writer examined all entries in the diary. Every activity was labelled with the specific message it carried. Classification in a systematic manner, according to the characteristic messages that these activities carried, followed. In this way ten categories emerged from the data. The writer has identified and described the categories. The ten categories were then examined and subjected to further analysis which resulted in quantitative findings which are reflected in tabular form. It was hypothesised that protocol is social administration and that it has implication for social policy. The writer's conclusion is that a protocol officer has however to possess skills which go beyond those of an administrator. Protocol officers therefore require professional training. The writer ventured away from conventional Social Work studies in choosing to research the field of protocol. Throughout, therefore, she consciously tried not to stray too far, but instead, time and again, attempted to relate the study directly to the discipline and the profession of Social Work. In conclusion the writer thought it fitting to point to other (cognate) perspectives on her subject. The sociologist Max Weber, for instance, provides good frameworks within which protocol should be studied.

Abstract: Giving the perception of social imaginaries that thinks of etiquette and decoration as a "thing of riches", a "thing of women" and a "thing of high class rich women who are vain and idle", the search for an understanding of other meanings and views on the universe of "refinement" consolidates itself as a fertile thread to be explored. Thus, the present thesis has as its first front of thinking the etiquette and decoration manuals, the magazines specialized in decoration and the television shows, in order to understand the constitution of a cultural repertoire used by consultants and by the public interested in the legitimacy of the "refinement" experiment. Notwithstanding, with the records of the author's participant observation taken in etiquette and decoration classes, meant as a second contribution for the present thesis, which were seen, especially, as feminine fields of activity, other meanings crossed by class, race, and sexuality differences emerged. In this sense, while the investigation of the meshes of "refinement" was conducted, different meanings could emerge, which stood off from essentializing visions on subjects that could, at first, be considered "minor" subjects

Luthuli, Thobekile Patience. "Politeness in context: the case of apologies and requests of a South African isiZulu speaking community." Thesis, University of Zululand, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10530/1720.
Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate politeness within the isiZulu speaking community. The study focused on the understanding of politeness within the target community (Umlazi Township) and whether this understanding has changed over the past generation. It also examined if males and females exhibit and value politeness differently. Finally, the study investigated which of the existing Western/non-Western models of politeness are relevant for describing the politeness phenomena in the target community. This study was conducted through the realisation of the speech acts of requests and apologies focusing on the variables of age, status and social distance. In order to achieve triangulation, qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were used. These comprised of observation of domestic and educational contexts, interviews with cultural/religious leaders, discourse completion tasks (DCTs) and interviews with families. My findings reveal that the understanding of politeness phenomena within the target community is more in keeping with that of other non-Western cultures than in Western cultures. Females are found to exhibit more polite behaviours than males. Furthermore, the general understanding of politeness over the past generation has remained more or less constant.

Full textPersonal archives, because of the abundance of information they contain, because of their diversity, complexity and intimate character give rise to interdisciplinary considerations, from a historical, social, archival, linguistic, and literary perspective. This research deals with letters of love written in the 1920s and 1930s, belonging to the personal archive of an ordinary person, and aims to contribute to a better understanding of private archives. Starting from an introduction to the subject, an interdisciplinary approach is taken to the personal archives and the units that compose them in the first two chapters. The specific objectives are to present a study of letters, in this case the Franciscan epistolary, in the third chapter, exploring after the themes social etiquette and daily life in the two final chapters. The methodology used consisted of a qualitative and exploratory approach of the bibliographical references, with reproduction of images of units of the Lysia archive, a personal archive, as well as excerpts of the letters searched that, throughout the text, are placed in perspective of bibliographical references used, searching for pertinences and connections. Images of the letters whose excerpts were transcribed in the tables are reproduced integrally in the annex of this research, in the second volume, in the same order as they appear in the text.

Paying attention to etiquette and obeying the etiquette norms can show a person’s education, manners, demeanor, charm, and reflect a person's level of awareness and attention to others in society, so that the individual's knowledge, cultivation, and value are recognized and respected by the society. The researchers' concept of etiquette was cultivated from the development of family life education. This research was based on the researcher's own journey and experience of learning international etiquette. The interpretation of etiquette is different from the previous interpretation and explanation. The main purpose of this research was : (1) to record, combine and integrate internal knowledge of the researcher’s own experiences to those that were interviewed who shared similar experience in learning international etiquette, making it possible to further re-discuss the connotation of etiquette; (2) to discuss and compare the researcher’s concept of life attitude in the workplace and family before learning international etiquette and after learning international etiquette; (3) to better understand the value International etiquette to build personal experience subjectivity, output experience knowledge empowering others. This study was conducted with a self-narrative method of research. It explored the process of changing the meaning of life attitude from the formation of etiquette, and literacy in the family education to the study of international etiquette. Through the reflection of this case, individual personal life learning experience was fully reflected in the change of life attitude, thinking, and growth. Through the researcher’s narration and analysis, it also “restudy” the new experience of self-interpretation, related learning experience as an international etiquette lecturer which reintegrate many of the original fragmented experience and knowledge.
