Full textThis dissertation abords the power relations that mark the modern occidental scientific production from the point of view of the Gender and Science studies of the north-american feminist and historian of science Donna Haraway. The author proposes a conception of all the knowledge production as a political practice, assuming a partial perspective as a fundament to an objective science and pointing the objectivity perspective based on the idea of impartiality as a producer of a type of knowledge that historically served as an instrument of domination: the knowledge that proposes itself as universal. In her narrative, the androcentrism, ethnocentrism, racism and the class divisions operate on the conformation and the transformations of this science from the construction of a knowledge privileged persona, the scientist, character developed from the image and similarity of an independent western white man. My extract of the book is the reformulations of these relationships along with the modern western science observed by the author in the emerging and in the productions of a specific group of disciplines in the field of biological natural science, which were strongly marked by the theory and technology of information and communication produced in the cybernetic science. In the construction of a critic discussion about the hegemonic nowerpowers, Haraway brings monstrous characters to light, among them a cyborg, as much as a way to revel cultural categories acting in the knowledge production as to materialize new meanings to the nature, bodies and the differences relationships. Compromised with these monsters, human figures and non-human redefined in her narratives, the author defends a relationship of connection, and not of division, between the subject and the object of knowledge.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to create an understanding of how the leaders from two Swedish sports associations see themselves and their work in the meeting with newly arrived immigrants, by using the concepts of ethnocentrism and sense of coherence (SOC). In the study, qualitative interviews were done with sport association leaders. The results show that there are different ways to work with newly arrived immigrants; either by including them in regular activities or by creating separate teams. No matter which way the sports associations choose to go, it provides the newly arrived immigrants several positive assets and emotions that will increase their SOC. The study also shows that sports associations have a belief that their choice of team formations creates an united feeling within the team, whether they choose to put newly arrived in separate teams or not. However, choosing separate teams constructs ethnocentrism and an unspoken us versus them perspective, while multi-ethnic teams creates a sense of an us and a different form of ethnocentrism where the sport association creates a joint culture.

Full textThrough this study I will attempt to show how a public might understand and relate to prejudice, racism and discrimination. How perceptions about ethnicity, race and nationality relate to cultural differences and how othering and stereotypes are being motivated by the informants and how they view them. The participating informants generally show significant tolerance towards others, but also show clear tendencies of othering and in-group bias. In their interpretation of “the cultural other”, assumptions and reasoning suggests that they are based on collective and individual group stereotypes. They do not accept interpersonal racism and discrimination but are seemingly unaware of what constitutes and creates structural discrimination and they are more tolerant towards discrimination based on economic interest.

Full textBackground: In step with the increased migration, the demands on health care are also increasing. When people with other cultural backgrounds seek health care, the care needs to be adapted to the person behind the culture, which does not always happen in an optimal way when the nurse lacks the right skills.Aim: The aim is to shed light on registered nurse's experiences of caring for patients from ethnic minority groups.Method: This study is a literature review based on 15 scientific articles from the CINAHL, PsycInfo and PubMed databases. The articles come from Austria, China, Finland, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Turkey, UK and USA. The articles were published between the years 2010 and 2020.Results: The results show that the registered nurse needs increased cultural competence to practice equal care, regardless of the patient's cultural background. The analysis generated four different main themes, challenges in communication, lack of cultural competence and cultural differences create different expectations of the care meeting.Conclusion: The results show that cultural differences between the registered nurse and patients from ethnic minorities result in a complex meeting as the evidence indicates that the cultural competence is lacking or can be developed. The overall results indicate that knowledge in the field has been shown to contribute to the nurse's professional development and that patients from ethnic minorities can receive more person-centered and culturally adapted nursing.

Full textIf the earlier consumptions of beggars were defined as "ethnic" swedes, nowadays the group of beggars are mainly accredited as vulnerable EU-citizens of Roma origin. The following study investigated if the conceptions of the beggars can contribute to the social secretary’s ability to affect their discretion. Through semi-structured interviews involving with the administrators of the social work and also including a content analysis of the law section adapting to the authority, some important concepts have been detected. The empirical data contribute to showing how operators in welfare tend to have a habit of displacing responsibility to outside of Sweden. The absquatulate the social workers reflected in the interviews was intertwined with compassion and a behavior of transferring the responsibility for the target group to other nations and structures outside of Sweden. Nevertheless, none of the informants suggested that EU-citizens, on the same conditions as Swedish citizens, should be included in the Swedish welfare. The representatives of social work and their contributions of difference-making, thus their excluding conception of the target group is considered to be a result of social service and governmental conformation. To summarize, the results we can recognize within the investigation of the welfare-systems connection to the EU-citizen, is according to the critics that the the vulnerable EU-citizen has lost his rights and position in a society where beggars can only function as ”invisible”.

Full textBackground: The increasing cultural diversity in Sweden has led to new challenges for the society and the health care services. Culture is universal for all humans and is reflected by factors such as religion, values, language, environment and gender. The cultural background influence our perceptions about health and sickness and how we express pain and discomfort. There are similarities and differences which leads to different understandings about caring hence the importance of cultural competence among health care staff. Aim: To illuminate clients and health care staff´s experiences of transcultural meetings in the context of Swedish health care. Methods: A litterature overview. The results of twelve qualitative studys have been synthesized and summarized. Six articles are from a clients perspective and the other six from a health care staff perspective. All of the studys have in common that they illuminate experiences of transcultural meetings in Swedish health care. Results: Three themes emerged with two subthemes each. The first theme is ”Challenges related to communication” with two subthemes, ”Language as a barrier” and ”The use of interpreter”. The second theme is ”Challenges related to cultural differences” with two subthemes, ”Different views of care and caring” and ”Perceptions about gender-differences”. The third theme is ”Prejudices and offensive treatment” with two subthemes, ”Prejudices and disbeliefs” and ”Perceptions and thoughts about offensive treatments”. Discussion: The result in this study provides a picture that transcultural meetings are not entirely uncomplicated. There are lack of tools to approach one another in transcultural meetings and it is a matter of finding new ways to communicate, both verbally and non-verbally. Health care staff experience feelings of frustration and insecurity when they care for people with different cultural backgrounds than their own. These feelings can be understood as examples of an ethnocentric approach. In order to develope cultural competence the health care staff needs education and reflection of transcultural care.

Partindo do pressuposto de que vivemos em meio a mercados nos quais exigem cada vez mais que se conheça melhor os consumidores, o presente estudo tem como objetivo principal desta pesquisa analisar a influência do etnocentrismo gaúcho no processo de percepção do consumer innovativeness. A pesquisa tem apenas uma abordagem quantitativa com viés descritivo e inferencial. A coleta de dados quantitativa aconteceu em universidades gaúchas, de duas formas. A primeira foi através de uma pesquisa denominada “estudo piloto” entre 100 alunos, onde se questionou quais as 5 marcas mais lembradas do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, com o resultado pegou-se as 2 mais citadas, sendo elas: Polar e Fruki. Estas foram as marcas utilizadas em todo o estudo como base nos questionários. A segunda forma deu-se através de um questionário estruturado com 400 alunos. A amostra do presente estudo totalizou 500 respondentes. Os dados foram purificados e analisados através de técnicas e ferramentas. Na sua maioria, foram processados com o auxílio do Software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Por fim, mostrou-se quais as influências do etnocentrismo (baixo “versus” alto) no processo de percepção do consumer innovativeness. Pode-se dizer que as médias encontradas nestes dois construtos apontam que as pessoas com baixo etnocentrismo têm médias menores em Domínio Específico da Inovação e Comportamento Inovador do que as que têm alto etnocentrismo, o que não aconteceu no construto da Criatividade Original. Conclui-se que devido o Domínio Especifico da Inovação e o Comportamento Inovador estarem mais ligados ao meio externo e as influências existentes nele o etnocentrismo se torna alto, o que não ocorre com a Criatividade Original que está relacionada a parte inata do indivíduo.
From the assumption that we are in touch with markets that increasingly demand a better knowledge about the consumers, this research primarily aims to analyze the influence of gaucho ethnocentrism in the process of perception of consumer innovativeness. This research has a quantitative approach with a descriptive and inferential view. The quantitative data collection took place in universities in Rio Grande do Sul, by means of two instruments. The first one, denominated “pilot study”, consisted of a survey with 100 students, asking them about what are the five most recognized trends in Rio Grande do Sul: the results of this survey showed that the two most mentioned trends were Polar and Fruki; thus, they were used as the questionnaires basis in the whole study. The second instrument was a structured questionnaire, carried out with 400 students. The study sample totalized 500 responding individuals. The data were purified and analyzed by means of techniques and tools. Most of the data were processed with the aid of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Software (SPSS). Finally, the influences of ethnocentrism (low versus high) in the process of perception of consumer innovativeness were revealed. It is possible to asseverate that the averages found in those two constructs indicate that people with low ethnocentrism have lower averages in Specific Domain of Innovation and Innovative Behavior than those ones who have high ethnocentrism, what did not occur in the construct of Original Creativity. Then, the conclusion of this study is that the ethnocentrism becomes high due to the fact that Specific Domain of Innovation and Innovative Behavior are most linked to the external environment and to the influences existent on it, what does not occur with Original Creativity, which is related to the individual’s innate element.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the laws, govern documents and guiding principals that are available for schools and their work regarding the work against discrimination, insulting and other forms of harassments, and then to form a method for the schools to implement this work in practice.
The work to counteract discrimination, insult treatment and other forms of harassments should be done both in a short term and a long term. In this paper there is a presentation of a project, a set of lessons that was created and carried out as a trial. The project aims for conscious making among children and students in school regarding norm, deviation, discrimination and power and the fact that equal treatment is hard to achieve. The basic purpose behind the project is to offer a tool to schools and teachers so that they can decrease the possible gap between the laws and the practice of these laws by creating awareness among students and other teachers. The long term work for achieving equal treatment should be done on a political level. But at the same time one must learn to discuss the fact that there are and always will be power orders in school and all of society.

Estudo genético dos manuscritos do livro Brazil, encomendado pela editora norte-americana Time-Life a Elizabeth Bishop, poetisa norte-americana que viveu no Brasil durante as décadas de 1950 e 1960. A primeira edição do livro Brazil foi lançada em 1962 nos Estados Unidos e no Canadá; seguia o estilo jornalístico da Revista Life, que privilegiava a linguagem fotográfica como instrumento informativo, ficando o conteúdo textual em segundo plano. Brazil também incorporou alguns dos valores ideológicos defendidos pela editora, que privilegiava a legitimação das políticas interna e externa do estado norte-americano junto à sociedade estadunidense, especialmente durante o período histórico da Guerra Fria. Essas circunstâncias históricas em que Brazil foi publicado tiveram influência significativa no processo de revisão ao qual o livro foi submetido pelos editores da Time-Life. Nesse processo de edição, tantas foram as alterações e os cortes introduzidos no texto de Elizabeth Bishop, que a autora não mais o reconhecia e o renegou publicamente. Assim, a presente pesquisa objetivou, mediante o instrumental metodológico da Crítica Genética, o estudo comparativo entre os manuscritos de Bishop e a primeira edição do livro Brazil publicada em 1962, a fim de identificar aspectos da ideologia autoral de Elizabeth Bishop, que foram contrários aos parâmetros ditados por aquela instituição editorial, tanto em termos de estilo narrativo, como de conteúdo ideológico. Nesse sentido, a contextualização histórica da obra também foi contemplada no presente trabalho, que busca compreender tal processo edição; no processo de criação do livro Brazil haveria de se refletir circunstâncias da vida pessoal da autora, bem como aos acontecimentos históricos dos anos 60, no Brasil e no mundo. Também foi abordada a problemática da autoria colaborativa do livro Brazil sob a perspectiva teórica da Crítica Genética e dos estudos da Atribuição Autoral. Ademais, a pesquisa buscou fazer uma amostragem da visão de Elizabeth Bishop sobre o Brasil e os brasileiros, através de seus manuscritos, em contraste com as imagens divulgadas pelo texto publicado.

Full textThe purpose of the essay is to examine how issues concerning gender equality are perceived and to show what areas are defined as problematic in different discourses. It also raises the question of who is defined as responsible for dealing with issues concerning gender equality in these different contexts. Theories used are the gender system and intersectionality. The study builds on a mapping of a company that is active nationally and internationally, with emphasis on the problems that can arise when these two social contexts meet, with a special focus on cathegories such as gender and “Swedishness”. The material was first gathered through the use of questionnaires and interviews, then analysed through discourse analysis. The analysis shows that discourses of gender equality can be seen as constructed and dependent on the context, problems concerning equality are defined in one way nationally and in another way internationally. In cases of sexual harassment internationally the informants often choose to look the other way and feel like it is difficult to bring the “Swedish” values concerning equality abroad. It is more common to adapt to the ways of international colleagues but the informants also find it important to point out that they don’t necessarily agree with these.
Syftet med uppsatsen är att ur ett genusperspektiv undersöka hur frågor om jämställdhet uppfattas och visa vilka områden man väljer att peka ut som problemområden i olika diskurser. Uppsatsen utreder även vem som anses ha ansvaret för frågor som rör jämställdhet i olika sammanhang. Det teorier som används är genussystemet och intersektionalitet. Analysen utgår från en kartläggning av ett företag som är internationellt aktiva och den problematik som kan uppstå i möten mellan olika sociala kontexter, med fokus på föreställningar av genus och ”svenskhet”. Arbetsmetoden består av enkät- och intervjustudier och analysen har gjorts genom diskursanalys. Denna visar att jämställdhetsdiskurser kan ses som konstruerade och kontextbundna. Jämställdhetsproblematik definieras på olika sätt beroende på om man befinner sig på arbetsplatsen eller utomlands. Om man utsätts för könskränkningar i det internationella arbetet väljer informanterna många gånger att se mellan fingrarna och tycker att det är svårt att tillämpa ett ”svenskt” synsätt internationellt. Det är vanligt att anpassa sig mycket efter sina utländska kollegor, men poängterar samtidigt att man egentligen inte håller med om deras synsätt.

Consumers are strongly influenced by the knowledge that one or another product is produced in the country, namely, the reputation and quality, they are often inclined to trust. O avanço dos estudos sociais culturalmente orientados cria ramificações em todas as esferas do pensar a arte e, seguindo esse caminho, perpassa pelo reconhecimento de uma disposição hierárquica entre os sistemas literários de países centrais e periféricos. Para entender esta relação empiricamente, toma-se para observação um microssistema desta natureza: a escrita etnocêntrica de Elizabeth Bishop em The Burglar of Babylon (1965) e a tradução de Paulo Henriques Britto, O Ladrão da Babilônia (1999). Por meio do cotejamento entre original e tradução, faz-se a análise do teor ideológico da escrita autoral e da postura adotada pelo tradutor com relação a ele. Dessa forma, destaca-se a construção poética a partir de uma leitura pós-colonial dos textos, fazendo ver uma tendência contestadora da hierarquia entre os sistemas literários dos Estados Unidos e do Brasil. O estudo das escolhas feitas pelo tradutor demonstra que se trata do coroamento do texto de uma das poetas da literatura inglesa de maior destaque no século passado por seu tradutor para o português. Os efeitos da mudança de tônica que o tradutor causa no texto servem, então, para asseverar que, neste espaço de dominação, tem lugar também a tradução ideologicamente autônoma. Ainda mais importante, a comparação entre os textos permite ver que a integridade poética está absolutamente preservada quando a metodologia de tradução se permite adaptar e criar uma obra inteiramente nova na cultura-alvo. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The advance of culturally oriented social studies creates branches in all spheres of art thinking. Following this path, it implies the recognition of a hierarchical arrangement between literary systems of central and peripheral countries. In order to understand this relationship empirically, we take one micro system of such nature for observation: Elizabeth Bishop’s ethnocentric writing in The Burglar of Babylon (1965), and its translation by Paulo Henriques Britto, O Ladrão da Babilônia (1999). We use the collation of original text and its translation to analyze ideological purport in the authorial writing and the stance taken by the translator regarding it. The poetic construction stands out through a post-colonial reading of the texts, bringing to light, thus, a tendency that contests hierarchy between the literary systems of the United States and Brazil. By studying the choices made by the translator, it is demonstrated that the text of one of the most notable poets in last century’s English literature is crowned by her translator into Portuguese. The effects of a change in punctuation the translator imprints on the final product serve, then, to assert that ideologically autonomous translations also have place in this space of domination. More importantly, the comparison between these texts makes us see that the poetic integrity is absolutely preserved when translation methodology allows to adapt it and create an entirely new work in the target culture.

Full textLe présent document vise à étudier les expressions impérialistes dans le roman Marianela de Benito Pérez Galdós. Ces expressions peuvent évoquer des attitudes et positions idéologiques qui font partie du contexte dans la société espagnole à l’époque. À partir de l’analyse du discours impérialiste utilisé dans le roman, cette étude montre des traces des origines de l’altérité ainsi que d’autres indices qui pourraient montrer le caractère colonialiste tels que l’ambition pour l’appropriation de la force du travail et la violence épistémique dont l’analyse des dialogues du roman fait preuve. La recherche a permis de conclure que dans le discours du personnage « Golfín » révèle un idéal de subjectivité qui pointe le modèle d’homme bourgeois que la modernité a entraîné avec elle. Tel discours est sous l’influence de la subjectivité esquissée dans les idéaux de la conquête, l’eurocentrisme et le classement de l’homme par rapport à son adaptation ou à l’absence de la même pour l’idéal bourgeois.
The following thesis studies the imperialist expressions present in the novel “Marianela” by Benito Pérez Galdós. These expressions may point to attitudes and ideological stands of the Spanish society of the time. Through analysis of the imperialist discourse in the novel, this investigation reveals vestiges of the origins of the representation of otherness and the configuration of the other as the peripheral, as a referent of otherness merged with the imperialist discourse of the time. It also reveals traits that may point to the colonialist character such as the ambition of the appropriation of the potentiality of the workforce and the epistemic violence found in the analysis of the novel’s dialogues. This study concludes that, within the discourse of the focusing character, Golfín, an ideal of subjectivity is revealed. This ideal points to the one characterised by the stereotype of the new bourgeois subject, who brings Modernity with him. At the same time, the discourse is influenced by the constructs of subjectivity drawn from the ideals of conquest, the Eurocentrism and the classification of the human being according to its adaptation, or lack of, to the bourgeois ideal.

Resumo: O racismo é um fenômeno que está presente nas relações sociais e acompanhou a modernidade. Ele moldou as relações entre grupos humanos durante a expansão marítima comercial européia, acompanhou o desenvolvimento do capitalismo, da industrialização e urbanização. Pode-se dizer que o racismo e suas manifestações de xenofobismo, segregação, e discriminação foram responsáveis por inúmeros massacres, genocídios e etnocídios. Mas se estas práticas estiveram quase sempre presentes no relacionamento entre grupos humanos, cabe dizer que o racismo é transnacional e no Brasil ele se apresentou como política pública do Estado imperial republicano. A política do branqueamento praticada no Brasil durante boa parte de sua história baseava-se no racismo científico, no darwinismo social e na ideologia do progresso. A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo identificar a renovação do racismo e da política de branqueamento. A hipótese dessa pesquisa está centralizada na análise do discurso da igreja Universal do Reino de Deus. Através dos discursos desta denominação religiosa, acredita-se que se pode identificar todos os elementos indicativos de crença no progresso e no evolucionismo, caracterizando o pensamento racista
Abstract: Racism is a phenomenon that is present in social relations and accompanied modernity. It shaped the relations between human groups during the expansion of European maritime trade, followed the development of capitalism, industrialization and urbanization. We can say that racism and its manifestations of xenophobia, segregation and discrimination were responsible for countless massacres, genocides and ethnocides. If these practices were almost always present in relationships between human groups, it should be said that racism is transnational and in Brazil it performed as a public policy of the Imperial State Republican. The policy of "whitening" practiced in Brazil for much of its history, was based on scientific racism, social Darwinism and the ideology of progress. This research aims to identify the renewal of racism and the policy of "whitening". The hypothesis of this research is centered on discourse analysis of the "Universal Church of Kingdom of God". Through the discourses of this religious denomination, its believed to identify all elements indicative of belief in progress and in evolutionism, characterizing racist thinking

Resumo: Esta pesquisa examina as concepções de tradução e de crítica de tradução do teórico francês Antoine Berman (1942-1991), expostas em sua obra póstuma, Pour une critique des traductions: John Donne (1995). Nessa obra, Berman (1995) apresenta seu projeto de crítica de tradução como um novo gênero de crítica literária, pretendendo preencher uma lacuna existente na área, uma vez que crê não haver, até então, reflexões ou exemplos que mostrem como proceder a uma "análise rigorosa de uma tradução" (p. 13-4). Seguem-se, como conseqüências, a confecção do projeto de crítica de tradução de Berman, bem como sua aplicação a traduções, principalmente francesas, da elegia "Going to becl', do poeta inglês John Donne (1572-1631). Minha pesquisa, além de apresentar, caracterizar e examinar a contribuição bermaniana no que tange à sua novidade e aos seus propósitos, propõe uma avaliação de sua perspectiva, do alcance de suas propostas e dos pressupostos que as norteiam. Nesse estudo, ressalto que esse teórico privilegia um modo de traduzir que conservaria as características da língua-fonte, enquanto condena o modo por ele denominado de "etnocêntrico", que domesticaria o texto estrangeiro em prol da língua-meta, como afirma em La traduction et Ia Iettre (1985, p. 48-53). É essa rejeição à tradução dita domesticadora que passo a denominar de "anti-etnocêntrica". Tendo isso em mente, o resultado desta pesquisa consistirá em trazer à tona os conflitos presentes no projeto do autor, decorrentes de seus pressupostos teóricos e de seu objetivo maior, qual seja, o de elaborar uma critica de base "não-subjetiva" e "não-dogmática", que repouse sobre "bases consensuais de julgamento" (1995, p. 16). Nesse sentido, tentarei mostrar que, embora esse teórico declare propor uma critica dessa natureza, acaba, de fato, por elaborar uma critica pautada em sua concepção "anti-etnocêntrica", que, inevitavelmente, implica uma abordagem da tradução ideologicamente marcada, e não uma abordagem universalmente válida, como defende
Abstract: This study examines the concepts of translation and translation criticism of the French theorist Antoine Berman (1942-1991), exposed in his posthumous work, "Pour une critique des traductions: John Donne" (1995). In this book, Berman presents his project of translation criticism as a new geme of literary criticism, and in doing so he intends to fulfill the lack existing in the area as he believed there were not, till then, reflections or examples showing how to proceed to a "defrnite analysis of a translation" (p. 13-4). As a consequence, Berman developed a project on translation criticism, as well as its application especially to the French translations of the elegy "Going to bed" by the English poet John Donne. My study, besides presenting, charaterizing and examining the Bermanian contribution with respect to its innovativeness and purposes, proposes an evaluation of its perspectives and extensions and its' premises. In this study, I emphasize that this theorist privileges a translation method which would preserve the source language characteristics, and condemns the method named by him as "ethnocentric", which would domesticate a foreign text, as he claims in "La traduction et Ia Iettre" (1985, p. 45-53). This rejection to the domesticating translation is hereon denominated "anti-ethnocentric". Having this in mind, the outcome of this study will point the conflicts present in the author's project due to his theoretical premises and his upmost objective, that is, to elaborate a "non-subjective" and "non-dogmatic" criticism, wbich is "founded on consensual judgement" (1995, p. 16). I will try to show that, although tbis theorist claims the proposal of a criticism of tbis nature, he, in fact, develops a criticism marked by the "anti-ethnocentric" concept, wbich, inevitably, suggests an ideologically marked translation approach, and not a universally valid approach, as he advocates

Full textThe overall aim of this study is to critically analyze how the newspaper articles from the Swedish sport news, Sportbladet portrays or represent "the other" from the 2018 World Cup, an international football tournament. Today’s society is influenced of immigration that has changed and moved people across the world. Therefore many soccer players have a different ethnicity than the nation they represent. In this study, the newspaper articals will be analyzed by using a critical text analysis that is connected to a discourse analysis. According to the media logic the news journalism and the news media should not benefit anyone more than anyone else. However, news reporting tends to be ethnocentric on numerous occasions. During the 19th century, the sports movement developed throughout Europe, and nationalism and patriotism developed enormously within the framework of sport. Today, it is strongly reflected during a World Cup. The ethnocentric perspective may be a form that legitimizes that the nationalist expressions are welcomed in mass media. The central part of the study is to see if the ethnocentric perspective in news reporting can contribute to create an “identity” representant ”the other”.
