Opettajien ammatillinen kehittyminen ja ammatilliset kehitystarpeet ovat hyvin erilaisia, samoin kuin tarvittava tuki. Pitkän opettajanuran jo tehnyt opettaja etsii täydennyskoulutuksesta eri asioista kuin nuori ja aloitteleva opettaja. Tarpeet ovat lopulta varsin yksilöllisiä. Täydennyskoulutuksen suunnittelu ja toteutus ovat ratkaisevan tärkeitä, jotta saatu koulutus koettaisiin mielekkäänä. Esittelen artikulaation käsitteeseen nojaavaa merkitysteoriaa ja sovellan sitä kokeilevasti puheen ja puhetilanteiden käsitteellistämiseen sekä puhekasvatuksen normien arvioimiseen. Artikkeli on teoreettinen ja poleeminen, ja se etsii alustavasti merkitystutkimuksen mahdollisuuksia pureutua puheilmiöihin. Esimerkkiympäristönä käytän yliopiston puhetilanteita ja nostan esiin niiden kulttuurisia merkityspotentiaaleja. Lopuksi käsittelen taiteen keinojen käyttämistä puhekasvatuksessa sekä pohdin artikulaatioteorian ja humanistiseksi kutsutun puheviestinnän perinteen suhdetta.

Kirjoittaja tuo elinikäisestä oppimisesta käytyyn kriittiseen keskusteluun sitä täydentävän, valtateoreettisen näkökulman, joka nojaa Michel Foucaultin ja foucault’laisten kasvatustieteilijöiden tuotantoon. Tätä foucault’laisen elinikäisen oppimisen analyysiä hän luonnehtii Kenneth Wainia lainaten epäilyn politiikaksi. Se etsii vallankäyttöä juuri sieltä, missä sen olemassaolo vahvimmin kielletään.
