Full textHow do organizations working in a simultaneously complex, competitive and turbulent environment manage risk ? Most traders buy and sell over a hundred million dollars daily, and there arc more than one hundred operators on a dealing floor. This empirical study draws over three years of participant observation in a trading room and forty interview in Paris, London and Hong Kong. There are three main contributions to this research : 1. The development of concepts guiding the understanding of the unique phenomenon of dealing rooms : the position, the correlation of financial instruments and the desk as a combination of a trading strategy and a product. 2. The building of a model guiding the understanding of organizations. This model is based on three fundamental forms: the hierarchy, the market and the network. We redefine them as ideal types through regulation, coordination and adaptation. 3. These ideal types allow for an analytical charting encompassing risk-management strategies. This makes it possible to draw up a falsifiable hypothesis: are trading rooms plural organizations ? We show the relevance of our ideal types and of their complex interactions. Chinese walls and product lines are explained as an application of this approach. Some distinctive features of dealing rooms are also explained : their perpetual state of transformation and their distinctiveness from other forms of organization. Facing a "crisis of the understanding of organizations", we suggest a new approach to risk- management and bring a contribution to the question of the "nature of the firm". Parallels with other organizations - in simultaneous engineering, control towers and news agencies - are suggested. Teaching of our research also bear on the inadequacy of risk-control strategies in use and suggest ways of improvement

Nevertheless, the pratical application of this approch in the enterprise is the key to a substantiel increase in quality of the mana- gement know-how. Our aim of this research intervention has been to explain to the actors the process of the rise in quality in all its complexity, its multidimensionality through the pield the criteria which made it emerge the terrain and which promoted it on the terrain. Full textThe prupose of this research is to schow that the classical approach of economic analysis can be considered as an alternative to the walrasian and neo-walrasian one. The formation of prices, defined as the salient feature of the distinction between these two traditions, is the starting point of our study. As a matter of fact when the standatd analysis focuses on walrasian market to elaborate a general theory of exchanges, classical one, on the contrary starts from the production side to build a theory of production without any reference to the market. In this light, if the traditional theory is closely linked to walrasian market, calssical approach seemw to be comptatible with different theories of market working. The aim of this research is therefore to show that the classical analysis is related to a set of market studies. In a firt part, based on the history of economic thought, we prove the existence of two calssical approaches of market. In a secondpart, we build a typology of classical markets to evaluate the level of completion of this tradition compared with the traditional one

We construct a structural microeconomic model that takes into account the main features of the market under study. An empirical analysis is then provided with the help of econometric tools. In the first part we describe the market under study and the available data. In the second part a survey of the literature is done in order to stress on the pros and cons of the approaches already used. In the last part, we set the economic and econometric framework and provide empirical results on the functioning of the market under study

Full textMost of the experimental studies conducted on the role that music plays in advertising consider it as an affective stimulus : it is an execution stimulus which influences consumer responses through the emotions it involves, that is to say mood or pleasure (peripheral route). In spite of methodological precautions taken by researchers, their conclusions are often divergent (some of them demonstrate that a preferred music has a positive impact on product choice, whereas others found no influence at all). Since the beginning of the nineties, some authors have been pointing out that these disappointing results are certainly due to the restrictive role given to the musical stimulus (only affective action). Incursion in other fields than marketing (musicology and psychology) corroborates this remark. Indeed, if music can provide emotion, pleasure and involve a specific mood, it owns a symbolic power as well that researchers have ignored (for exemple, music can evoke exotism, prestige, modernity,. . An empirical study led on about six hundred people showed that it is necessary to integrate melody's evocations in the persuasion model in order to better understand the role that music plays in advertising

Full textThe aim of this research is to analyses the stability of values confronted with the upheaval of the political and economic system of German society. The context of German reunification allows us to approach the degree of stability of values, because values are influenced by various factors. These factors can be classified into four main categories: social and economic factors, political factors, the existing value system, and demographic characteristics. We conduct two surveys, by interviewing west Germans as well as east Germans, and we use a longitudinal approach (which is partly retrospective, the research being "quasi-experimental"), as German reunification took place in the past

Full textTo analyze the role of sciences in technical innovations, one must bring together two disciplines, economics of technical science, and sociology of science : the first serves to adequately frame the questions that the analysis implies, the second provides the pertinent methods. In our work, using six case-studies in biotechnology, we show how the structure of the innovative projects under examination is determined by the scientific controversies surrounding the objects in the process of conception or manufacture. Such controversies are never restricted to scientific content : they involve all at once the scientific theories concerning the scientific and technical objects, the principles underlying the organization of research and development activities, and the distribution channels for the marketing of these new products. The scientific theories are developed concurrently with the new products that they describe, and with the markets for these new products and new processes. This development of scientific theories is based on the assignment of responsabilities to things (cells which "prevent" others cells from functioning,. . . ), as well as to men (accusations of incompetence, mistakes in work organizations, etc). These assignments of responsibility are progressevely transformed into scientific theories, personnel policies, organizational changes, new market creations, etc. All these effects of scientific research are essential from an economic standpoint because they define degrees of scarcity as well as the configurations of the socio-technical networks which enable the circulation of the new products or processes. In this way, we see that scientific research can no longer be excluded from economic studies of technical innovations: on the contrary such research is at the center of such processes of innovation

Full textThis qualitative research focuses on the effect of participating in a tontine, a type of rotating savings and credit association, on Senegalese women’s empowerment. The data provided in this document come from a study case that was carried out in the tontine AND DANNE at a moderate rental housing market in Nimzatt. Twelve women have been interviewed using semi-structured interviewing guides. The concepts of “empowerment” and “participation” were defined in a conceptual framework. The applicability of the empowerment approach as the chosen method of data analysis has allowed us to see the beneficial effects of participating in a tontine. The fact is that the participation of women to such financial association increased their self-esteem and significantly improved their relationship with other women from within the group as well as with their community. The critical awareness of the participants comes from the lack of access to credit experienced by the majority of Senegalese women. Both “de facto” and voluntary participation were observed within the tontine. Also, the tontine is at the real power of the scale of participation proposed by Arnstein (1969), as there noted the presence of levels of partnership and delegation. The data analysis highlights other avenues of research, including community-based behaviours observed in participants who provided moral support and dietary management to young Talib beggars. These initiatives could well serve as examples to follow for the Senegalese government for the implementation of social programs. Key words : Tontine - participation - empowerment – study case

Full textOne of the most striking facts of the history of the financial system is the process of liberalization begun since 1994. A reform of such a dimension is not fortuitous. It aims mainly at the security (by a better treatment of the risk) and a fairer competition (by a bigger transparency). The objective of this work is to test the impact of this movement on the performance of the Tunisian deposit banks. Indeed, it is allowed to wonder if the intensification of the competition limits the increase of the banking performances in terms of business volume, profitability or value creation. Besides, are growth, value creation, financial profitability and solvency compatible objectives within this new space? What strategies did banks implement to adapt ?This thesis examines the measures of performance the most adapted to the Tunisian banks, shows the impact of these reforms on these indicators, analyzes groups of banks that excel at one or some of the categories of performance, and, finally, tracks down the new strategies which stand out from this vast process of development, yet, not totally finished

Full textThis dissertation is focused on the segmentation theory, as developed by economists and sociologists, from france and sweden, during the 1970s-80s. The discussion starts with michael j. Piore, and continues with the main researches included in what is called segmentation theory. Most writers have accepted the idea that labor markets are not independent of the way people live in the family. That's why the second chapter is concerned by cross-national comparisons about the family life, trying to precise the influence of family statuses, family functions on french and swedish labor markets. Finally, generation relationships are studied and this has lead to the idea that sociologists should give more attention to macrosocial generation-relationships than purely family-directed generation-relationships. To avoid a floating study, purely empirical, i have choosen to follow the aix-group theory, and a long chapter precises what are education, organization, industry-relationships (as well as labormarket policies ) in sweden, considering that it was not usefull to speak again of france, well described by the aix-group and his fellow-searchers. In this chapter, the cases of Volvo-Torslanda and Posten-Goteborg are examined. Oppositely, it was necessary to develop more the cases of Citroën-Rennes and "la poste" in Rennes that were not replaced in a societal analysis. Using these theories, and conscious of these structures, i have been able to state a typology of the young-blue-collar labor markets, as well as the white-collar and to precise the relationships between these segments (chapters 8 and 9 ). The conclusion comes back to the debate about segmentation, in a sociological point of view. What is a segment ? What is the relation between a social group and a segment ? What has changed since the first writings of Piore ?

Full textThis dissertation compares senior civil service reforms in France and Great-Britain in a socio-historical perspective. Whereas these countries are considered as most different cases in the literature on public administration and managerial reforms, I suggest that their historical trajectories display striking similarities in the long run, related to issues of regulation of the administrative labour market. Building on analytical concepts from the sociology of professions and the sociology of labour markets, I argue that in both countries the politics of senior civil service can be explained as a competitive dynamic between actors struggling to define and control the rules of entrance and circulation on the administrative labour market. Four institutional dynamics – professional, administrative, political and educational - are at the core of this evolution, which I suggest can be explained in three successive historical periods: the politics of external closure on the administrative labour market and the professionalization of the “generalists” before the second World War; the politics of centralization and the attempts to create an internal labour market at the top of the State; and finally the opening up of the administrative labour market and the politics of re-regulation at the end of 20th century. This long term historical analysis leads to characterize two ideal-typical models of administrative labour market – a professional one and an organisational one - based on different types of internal segmentation

Full textThe simulation of complex processes in large scale power systems needs the reduction of the problem. How to reduce the spatial complexity of a large scale power network while minimizing information loss? To answer this question we have divided this work in three main steps: 1) network buses aggregation; 2) modelling of the clusters' links; 3) defining the equivalent branches maximum exchange capacity. The bus aggregations in a cluster implies that it will be treated as a coppper-plate by the market model. Therefore, the most frequent network congestions must be identified ideally placed at the clusters frontiers. After the reduction, the same power flow repartition must be found in both reduced and complete model. To do that, a methodology to define a PTDF matrix was developed. For economic purpose studies, the branches maximum capacity is a key parameter, to define this value, a methodology is proposed that estimates the equivalent transmission capacities using historical system operating set points. These approaches were applied to the European transmission network and allowed to define a reduced model that minimises the information loss

Full textIn the ideology of economic liberalism, the government assumes the role as regulator to ensure compliance with market rules and regulation. Indeed, these rules and regulations control two sets of relation. One applied between economic entities is competition rules justified by the equal opportunity principle. Other applied between business operator and consumer is consumer protection regulations justified by the subordinate position of the consumer towards the operator in commercial practices. Although, these two fields of law don’t have the same scope of application, they pursue a common objective to encourage a fair access to products and services in terms of price and quality. This objective cannot be archived without installation of competent authorities. At this point, difference in nature of these authorities between two areas of law shall be analyzed by an institutional approach. In addition, a comparative approach will be used to compare the competition and consumer protection authorities system in France and the system in Thailand in the context of European Union and ASEAN Economic Community

Full textDue to the health hazards relative to the use of medicine, French, Swiss and British public authorities took the choice to intervene in the pharmaceutical industry. Medication, partly put aside from the market, then became an object of public matter requiring a specific legal framing. Incorporated into the health system, it is the preferred target of public health insurance cost-containment policies. Prices are not bound to the mechanism of supply and demand. Production, elaboration and distribution are liable to specific deontological constraints. Though medicines are a matter of public health, they are nonetheless an industrial good. Integrated to the market, they are at the core of the rivalry between pharmaceutical companies, who seek economic efficiency. With the aim of creating a favourable environment for the economic development of the segment, it is essential to keep the market going smoothly, by forbidding anticompetitive practices and fighting restrictive competing practices. The support of self-medication, tax incentives for research and the protection of pharmaceutical innovation are incentive factors of an optimal pharmaceutical production. Moreover, pharmaceutical companies display important competitive skills, through research and development, promotional policies, commercial cooperative agreements and, restructuring policies. Facing a prominent criterion of economic efficiency, will public service be able to survive ?

Full textObjectives and hypothesis: the problem of subliminal stimuli activity constitute one of the major paradoxes of research in human sciences. The considerable number of publications led to the emergence of two trends. The first one defending the principle of active stimuli, the other one systematically rejecting experimental results one the grounds that the procedure was faulty. The present research work aims at clarifying the concept of subliminal stimuli, subliminal perception and subliminal persuasion. Tools and contribution: subliminal perception means "perception under the threshold. "Sub" egal below, "limen" egal threshold. The simple study of the word doesn't permit to establish what threshold is being considered. The present work will try to answer two main question (Gregory, 1993) : (1) can a person perceive a stimulus that he is not aware of and that he cannot become aware of ? (2) can a person be influenced by a stimulus that he is not aware of and that he cannot become aware of? The first part of the present study demonstrates the existence of subliminal perception via an experiment on the network organization of the semantic memory of brandnames. The second part of the study consists in a review of existing experimental work and establishes the reality of subliminal persuasion

Dagot, Claire. "Recherche sur l'ordre concurrentiel du marché de l'électricité : comparaison France-Allemagne." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018AIXM0307.
Full textThe completion of the internal electricity market depends on the effective construction of a competitive order. Competition law acts therefore as the sole market framework standard. However, the numerous competitive inefficiencies reveal a mixed record of liberalisation. These results are attributed to the existence and introduction of national regulations, such as pricing, which affect the competitive transition of the market. The electricity market is thus marked by a dispute between member states and the European Union. Twenty years after the decision was made to open the market to competition, there is not an electricity market but several electricity markets. Regulatory standards are therefore introduced to complement the opening to competition and fix the various market failures. Introduced ab initio as a transitional and supplementary law, the multiplication of regulatory standards and the enhancement of their scope of application give them a market framework role. This creates a regulation law alongside competition law on the electricity market. But this regulation also results from exogenous and endogenous imperatives to the market. Electricity is not a commodity like others. The essentiality of the electric good and its environmental externalities shape a specific market framework. Consumer protection, environmental protection and security of supply are therefore governed by regulatory standards, or even regulations, which have an impact on the competitive transition. The electricity market is thus confronted with many legal inconsistencies. The multifunctionality of electricity affects the project of a strictly competitive market order

Full textAttitude is an object-evaluation association, which is automatically activated by mere presentation of the attitude object. Implicit Cognition theory proposes a conceptual distinction between evaluations that are the products of introspection, called explicit attitudes. And automatic evaluations that may exist outside of conscious awareness, called implicit attitudes. This focusing on non conscious and automatic processes, has widely been neglected by consumer research. The new implicit measures assess automatic associative evaluations without introspection: among those new measuring tools. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) shows the best psychometric properties and is the most commonly used in consumer research. Our research revealed that the implicit attitude concept and the IAT are a viable concept and a reliable measure for research on innovation. Our research has also revealed that personal involvement and innovativeness affect the strength of the relationship between implicit attitude and explicit attitude. But that this moderating effect is not significant. These results suggest that the IAT may be instrumental in the market research methods used by marketers during the whole innovation process. They also reveal additional subjects of research such as: building an integrative framework to determine when the use of the IAT is relevant in innovation research; understanding better the impact of Brand Equity on consumer behaviour through an implicit cognitive approach ; integrating the implicit attitude concept in the hierarchy-of-effects models linking representations and both explicit and implicit attitudes

Full textThis disseration focuses on the topic of the relationship between marketing and patents. Most precisely it raises the question of the existence of a specific patent marketing. Patent is first a legal document to guarantee the intellectual property of an invention. But it plays also a key role in the development of the firm through the innovation process. Being at the border between innovation and markets, either consumer or business markets, patents calls for the marketing to be used in the various choices related to its registration, its valorization, and its implementation. Patent marketing belongs to the family of industrial marketing and its subset of high technology marketing for products or projects. However its peculiarities imply some adaptations which define its essence. A field survey acknowledges the existence of patent marketing. It shows that its use and implementation vary significantly from one group of firms to another. It indicates its key components while opening new avenues to explore in details each element

Full textThis thesis is a study of how managers justify their staffing decisions. We spent three years at the distribution management branch of two French energy companies. We investigated the staffing tools, performed 65 formal interviews with recruiting managers, HR people and internal staff candidates and analysed data on job placement for the 6500 staff. Theoretically, we rely on the conventionalist and institutionalist approach. Studying the debates in the literature on competency, we show that while some specialists want to acknowledge competency, others want to manage it, others to certify it and others still to create networks of competencies. These specialists put emphasis on official, managerial, technical and relational competencies. Empirically, we show that there are four ways to staff positions: career path planning, recruiting on the internal market, human resources management and networking. Between 1980 and 2004, the career path planning approach is progressively replaced by the human resources management approach. The internal market looses its fluidity

Full textLife style research has been unconditionally accepted by marketing experts, but rather ignored by the academics. At the first beginning, it enjoyed social and commercial success. Its efficiency is questioned today. The state of the art is set out here by : - an historical approach about direct and undirect origins of life style research, - a study of main concepts on line and their problematics, - a lay-out of methods and (available) results, - an inventory of technical and methodological fails of these approaches
