Full textThe purpose of this research is to contribute to a better theoretical knowledge about the sources of efficiency in loyalty programs, in the retail sector. We develop two ideas: the selective impact of the loyalty program, and its effect on the modification of purchase behaviour. Our investigation has been carried out for a 36 months period, based on the BehaviorScan single-source panel, covering 300. 000 purchase transactions from 7 hyper-and supermarkets, which has been crossed with the store database of a French retailer. We conclude with the multinomial Dirichlet model that the double jeopardy phenomenon is present and loyalty programs do not substantially change market structures. At an individual level, variance analyses with repeated measures and survival analyses show that the impact of loyalty cards on purchase behaviour is relatively weak, short-term and selective as they primarily attract heavy customers of the store but not of the category. The principal role of loyalty cards is thus to select and identify the best customers, leading therefore to an improved focus of resources

Full textTo study the question of writing for deaf persons not based on spoken or sign languages, which seem almost inevitably associated with the study of reading and writing, but based on the writing itself as a means of possible expression and of language acquisition, we have surveyed around fifty deaf and hard of hearing persons. While avoiding a "pro-oralist" or on the contrary a "pro-gestualist" attitude, we were able to study reading and writing in our subjects. The results of our interviews shows that, most commonly the practice of writing is common in our subjects even those with little reading ability. If some of them have difficulties in reading or writing, their relationship to writing is related to communication and language acquisition. Is writing an important but neglected factor in the life of deaf persons?

Full textEmissions of ozone precursors by biomass burning activity in south Africa and Madagascar and stratospheric intrusions are the two sources controlling tropospheric ozone at Reunion. Located at 21°S, the site is strongly impacted by the subtropical jet stream activity during austral winter and spring. Ozone measurements at Reunion started in 1992 with the first radiosoundings. The measurements were enriched from 1998 with the installation of a LIDAR at the station. Ozone radiosonde measurements are also performed at Irene (South Africa) since 1990. In 1998, Irene and la Reunion joined the SHADOZ network (Thompson et al. 2003). The study presented here intend to analyse the ozone database with a lagrangian approach in order to compare the impact of photochemical and stratospheric sources on the tropospheric ozone burden in the region. This work starts with a comparative study of tropospheric ozone climatology and trends at two regional sites: La Reunion and Irene. The tropospheric ozone trends have been calculated both considering the whole tropospheric column and dividing the troposphere into three atmospheric sections standing for lower, middle and upper troposphere. The examination of data, the climatological studies and the trend calculations have revealed the specific features of data, the climatological characteristics of tropospheric ozone in the region and allowed to hypothesize on the importance of regional sources. The analysis of the ozone database at Reunion with the lagrangian trajectory code Lacytraj revealed the seasonal behaviour of stratospheric intrusions, their seasonal features such as the depth of intrusions, the value of ozone mixing ratio in stratospheric air masses and vertical seasonal distributions of stratospheric intrusions

Full textThe presence of amorous angels in French 19th century literature may not only be linked to the publication of two poems - Byron's Earth and Heaven and Thomas Moore's Loves of the Angels - both in the wake of the English translation (1821) of the Book of Enoch. The first section shows how, since one of the Septuagint versions from the 3rd century B. C. , these particular angels have been present in European and Oriental literature. The second part aims to highlight how the connections between the angel figure and several heavenly creatures from other mythographic horizons have contributed to the survival of the concept of "amorous angels". The third part makes clear that the French 19th century literary corpus, from 1821 until the beginning of the 20th century, has been a receptacle of echoes from the most ancient traditions

Full textOral productions from french and english profoundly deaf oral youths are studied. The following hypothesis is proposed : profound deafness, which implies specific conditions for language acquisition and for the development of cognition, is likely to have linguistic consequences, whatever the language spoken. The data are analysed from morphological, syntactic, and semantic points of view. Quantitative homogeneity is checked, before studying the functioning of corrections and repetitions, the setting of discourse themes, determiners, and temporal references. The data analysis shows the existence of regularities, with identical phenomena in french and in english. The correlations that appear throughout with the grammars of sign languages (which were created by deaf people), tend to support our hypothesis

Full textThis action-research aims at establishing links between the variability of self-assessment criteria and certain individual characteristics. Its background includes the autonomization framework, the external assessment framework ans self-directed learning as implemented in a Higher-Education Institution for Engineering. Categorization of the learners according to their learning styles is based on differential psychology. The research design postulates, first, a difference between external and internal assessment criteria and, secondly, the influence of individual characteristics on the choice of self assessment criteria. The data, collected during interviews, provide (1) the list of self-assessment criteria used by the learners in the four skills, among which non-traditional criteria, (2) the means for categorizing the learners according to seven variables: (i) sex, (ii) educational origin, (iii) experience in the use of English, (iv) experience in the learning of other languages, Cv) the sociocultural environment, (vi) the level acquired in English and (vii) the learning style. The whole of the data has been processed by the STAT-ITCF software. The first analysis provides the weight of each criterion and its links with the individual characteristics, and the possibility of grading the criteria; the second one draws the learners' profiles as a result of the individual variables and establishes links between these profiles and the choice of the criteria; the third one processes ail the criteria and the seven personal characteristics. The variability hypothesis is confirmed in the case of five out of the seven variables; the variability observed reaches about 33% for certain links between the choice of the criteria and individual characteristics

Full textThis study presents the medieval canon of the vaikhanasa vaishnavas, a main part of which was probably composed between ixth and xivth centuries a. D. The earlier canon of the vaikhanasas, sometimes called "vedic" is briefly examined. The medieval canon is then defined, its absolute and relative chronology is discussed. The main theological, cosmological, social and religious teachings of its published texts are set forth. This is followed by an analysis of the rituam discourse and of the mantric speech. Several stratas of this rite, which is mainly performed in public temples, are distinguished : vedic and yogico-tantric culte, and cult of the material image to which a complete chapter is devoted. The two concluding chapters study the reinterpretation of wedic ritual models by the medieval canon

Full textMajor stake of the democratic society, the journalist’ sources of information don’t stop arousing controversy. The right for the secret of sources, ancient demand of professional circles, constitutes an indispensable guarantee of the right of the public for the information and requires the implementation of an effective legal protection. Nevertheless, the anonymity of the source of the journalist cannot lead to the violation of the other rights and liberties fixed by law, and imposes a stable balance of the interests in presence. The relation which unites the journalist to his source of information then shows to be a paradoxical relation in which the journalist, protected as guarantor of the secret of his information source necessarily has to assume this responsibility

Full textEnergy supply and climate change are nowadays two of the most outstanding problems which societies have to cope with under a context of increasing energy needs. Public awareness of these problems is driving political willingness to take actions for tackling them in a swift and efficient manner. Such actions mainly focus in increasing energy efficiency, in decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, and in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, power systems are undergoing important changes in the way they are planned and managed. On the one hand, vertically integrated structures are being replaced by market structures in which power systems are unbundled. On the other, power systems that once relied on large power generation facilities are witnessing the end of these facilities' life-cycle and, consequently, their decommissioning. The role of distributed energy resources such as wind and solar power generators is becoming increasingly important in this context. However, the large-scale integration of such type of generation presents many challenges due, for instance, to the uncertainty associated to the variability of their production. Nevertheless, advanced forecasting tools may be combined with more controllable elements such as energy storage devices, gas turbines, and controllable loads to form systems that aim to reduce the impacts that may be caused by these uncertainties. This thesis addresses the management under market conditions of these types of systems that act like independent societies and which are herewith named power system cells. From the available literature, a unified view of power system scheduling problems is also proposed as a first step for managing sets of power system cells in a multi-cell management framework. Then, methodologies for performing the optimal day-ahead scheduling of single power system cells are proposed, discussed and evaluated under both a deterministic and a stochastic framework that directly integrates the uncertainty information into the scheduling process. Results show that the utilization of the proposed approaches may lead to important advantages for operators managing these types of power system cells

Full textCochlear implantation allows profoundly deaf children to develop their production and their comprehension of oral language. However, clinicians and researchers highlight the existence of an important interindividual variability in post-implantation outcomes even in the case of early intervention. The aim of our work was then to bring out factors involved in the perception, communication, speech and language development of implanted children. Some endogenous variables (such as global development, verbal and non-verbal cognitive development, or age at implantation) and exogenous variables (such as environmental characteristics) were taken into account. Therefore, we performed two monocentric studies. The first, a longitudinal study, involved 7 children aged between 10 and 36 months at the pre-implantation assessment. They were evaluated every 3 months during the first year after implant activation. The second, a transversal study, involved 26 children aged between 6 and 10 years implanted since 6 years and 2 months on average. We proposed to the children several tests commonly used by clinicians and researchers and two perceptive tests designed for this present research. Both of our studies show evidence that cochlear implant outcomes depend on characteristics already present before implantation (such as age, pre-implantation development level, and communication type) and on cognition, communication and perception factors developed after the activation of the implant. Furthermore, our results show, in both studies, that family participation is a crucial factor for the strong linguistic development of profoundly deaf cochlear implanted children

Full textThe aim of this research is to find new perspectives for teaching to write and read in french language to deaf children expressing themselves in sign language. We try to show that the language of these children is not to be considered as pathological. We are proposing a model to access literacy in a bilingual way (sign language/ french written language) and through direct method of instruction. Our hypothesis is that a method called in French "dictée à l'expert" (dictation to an expert) can be used in sign language interacting with deaf people. We have tested on a longitudinal base the efficiency of this way of learning with five young children studying in a school of Nevers (Nièvre, France). The analysis of the corpus demonstrate the role of "dictée à l'expert" in these children progression with reading and writing

Full textThe main objective of this project is furnishing information to clarify the vibrations physics in machining from orthogonal cutting. First chapter contains the machining process characterisation by means of cutting forces. We evaluate the piezoelectric dynamometers in frequency domain and the influence of assembly components. These evaluations reveal the dynamic measurements problems. At the end of this part, we propose a correction method of piezoelectric dynamometer measurements to frequencies higher than dynamometer bandwidth. Also, we present an application of the method. Second chapter comprises the understanding of vibration sources. We analyse specially the segmented chip formation because its excitation role is not clear in literature. Also, we consider the effects of regenerative excitations, which depend of interaction between cutting conditions and machine-tool dynamic response. Third chapter includes the experimental identification of vibration sources during machining. We have identified and characterized the segmented chip formation and the machine-tool dynamic

Full textSince the discovery of oceanic hydrothermal vents, microbial diversity of this extreme environment was studied using both cultivation an molecular approaches. In this study the microbial diversity of active chimney from both TAG and Lucky Strike sites (Mid Atlantic Ridge) was investigated using both molecular survey and continuous enrichment culture in a bioreactor. To reproduce as close as possible environmental conditions the cultures were performed in oligotrophic conditions, in the presence of hydrogen and carbondioxide in the ga sweeping mix or using in situ sampled fluid/sea water mix as culture medium. The effect of environmental changes such as temperature and the absence or presence of sulphur was also investigated. Archaeal and Bacterial diversity was studied in both culture and natural samples. Through 16SrRNA gene sequences analysis of the enrichment cultures, microorganisms affiliated to ArchaeogIobales, Thermococcales, Desufurococcales, Deferribacterales and Thermales were detected depending of culture conditions. The effects of environmental changes (i. E. Modification of culture conditions: temperature, electron donors and acceptors availability, medium composition) were shown to affect the microbial community in culture, as happens in their environment. We have also investigated the role of anammox in hydrothermal settings. Evidence for the occurrence of anammox in this particular habitat was demonstrated by concurren surveys including the amplification of 16SrRNA gene sequences, ladderanes lipids analysis and measurement of a 14N-15N production in isotope pairing experiments at 60 and 85°C

Full textThe study of the spatial and architectural organization of the paleochristian monasteries (IVth-VIIth century’s a. D. ) Of the Alexandria patriarchate, the Jerusalem patriarchate and the Antioch patriarchate, necessitates comparison of indications given by texts and by archaeology. On the one hand, the analysis of some hagiographic accounts, and of the basilian and pachomian rules, shows the variety of the ways of life, from the anachoretic life to coenobitism, sheltered by the monastic communities of the paleochristian near east. The same monastery could lodge, at one and the same time monks living totally or partly with the community, or ascetics living in cells. On the other hand, the monastic sites which have been the subject of archaeological excavations, can be classified in three main groups: the + monasteries with grouped buildings;, the laures, the architectural components of which are linked by a path, and the + monastic towns ;. The last, of large dimensions shelter monasteries with grouped buildings and laures. Archaeological study shows the architectural elements of the monasteries' components, such as the refectories, the kitchens or even the towers, whereas the texts may help to understand their purpose

Full textPolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) are carcinogenic compounds, present in all the compartments of the Environment. In the atmosphere, their sources are both from natural (biomass burning, volcanic emissions...) and anthropogenic (transport, industry, residential heating...) origins. Once emitted in the atmosphere, PAH are distributed between the gaseous or particulate phases and may be involved in different physico-chemical processes such as photodegradation, radical-initiated oxidations... Due to their carcinogenicity, PAH emissions are nowadays subjected to various regulations from France and more largely, European Union. In the atmosphere, benzo(a)pyrene has been selected as representative of the PAHs because of its high toxicity. In order to improve regulations involving emission reductions, several methodologies have been developed to perform source apportionment. The most commonly used in the literature is the molecular approach, based on molecular profiles and particular ratios. Nevertheless, conditions of PAH formation and physico-chemical processes affect these characteristic values. The main objective of this work was to develop a new methodology of particulate-PAH source tracking based on the molecular isotopic composition. The development of analytical procedure was performed to determine 13C/12C of PAHs by GC/C/IRMS. The study of the impact of PAH reactivity in the presence of O3, NO2, OH and/or solar radiations shows that no significant isotopic fractionation is induced on their isotopic compositions. Molecular isotopic approach was applied on natural particles, collected at different specific sites: 13C/12C of PAHs and molecular data allow differentiating particulate-PAH sources. Therefore, determinations of molecular and isotopic characteristics have been undertaken by applying this methodology on particulate-PAHs emitted during the combustion of fifteen Mediterranean woods. Finally, molecular approach coupled with different parameters (back-trajectories, oxidant concentrations, wind roses...) enables to measure the levels of PAH concentrations in the atmosphere in order to evaluate their impacts as a source of pollution in the Arcachon Bay

The information supplien by "audible" and "visible" spoken word represents different information sources, that make speech recognition and interpretation possible. We have tried to put in evidence the results of different informations (audible and visible) on word perception based on an experimental procedure with a sample of hearing impaired adults that became profoundly deaf for different reasons. All users of cochlear implants. Two conditions were teste: visuam and audio-visual. Three hypothesis tested were confirmed: - threre is a difference on perception under the two conditions: - some vowels may facilitate the visualization of certain consonants: - a new classification of consonants by homophonous groups was verified. Our study was then distributed through seven chapters

Full textHistorical sources (official history, steles, memoranda of buddhist construction works) of the Koryô dynasty (918-1392) incidentally mention buddhist monks practising geomancy. Documents of the XVth century onwards always refer to them in a negative way. It serves apparently to vilify the Koryô regime, to disparage buddhism, as well as to legitimate the drastic reduction of monastery estates and the moving of the capital to another site (Hanyang). Actually, geomancy practised by buddhist monks was an important feature of social, political and religious life in Korea during that period. Some monks were exercising it to make to make a living outside the institutional boundaries. Others were enrolled into public administration, to participate in togams (special commitees), called in occasionally to organize a famous monk's funeral, the construction of a buddhist building or a royal trip. As geomancy and fortune-telling were also carried out in other government agencies, buddhist geomancers often acted as middlemen between the State and the buddhist establishment. .

Full textHow can one define these paintings and sculptures in the round that make up Japanese portraits of monks? Through their specific form that derives from a continental prototype which has never been reappraised and which remained stable except for short periods of time. Such a consistency results from a strong influence of China, and from the use of iconographic models (zuzō). Furthermore, copying a work of art has never been undervalued. Portraits are also images which benefit the sect that produces them. By providing an image or representation that never decays, they bear testimony to a monk's holiness, even buddhahood. Lastly, the Zen portraits (chinzō) are often seen as a kind of certification; however, this function seems quite rare. Group portraits, scrolls (emaki) and literature also describe people in their own way, allowing comparison with portraits. Portraiture could have followed its own path; it has preferred to borrow from holy images: deities, maṇḍala and jātaka illustrations

Full textThis thesis presents blind source separation (BSS) methods for a particular model of mixture, the quadratic one. The first part presents the separating structure (basic and extended versions). The equilibrium points of the structure and their local stability are then studied. We propose two methods of BSS. The first method uses the cumulants and the second is based on a maximum likelihood approach. We validate our results by numerical tests
