Full textThe thesis is divided into three distincts parts. The first half of the part one reviews the history of phobias and considers the origins of anguish through representations of Japanese mythology compared with other mythologies better known in the occident. The second half deals with anthropophobia in Japan, its classification in mental illness and its treatment (morita therapy). The first half of part two presents techniques of maternal nurture and the characteristics of early mother-child relationships from research in the field. The second half examines the Japanese mother imago's characteristics according to several differents approaches: (1) the early mother-child relationships, (2) the shinto mythology, (3) the Japanese image of hero, (4) the representations of nature and (5) the ajase complex. This part ends with an attempt to throw into relief some preferential psychological mechanisms working in Japanese socials phobias, especially identification with the victim, retention of aggresiveness, masochism, inversion of the persecutor/persecuted relation and a more intensive manifestation of the depressive position (in contrast with a less intensive manifestation of the schizo-paranoid position). One can observe these mechanisms too in the Japanese psyche but in a lesser degree of expression, at the very general state of lifestyle (which we qualify as extroverted), expressed in the form of a cultural tendancy without any character of morbidity. Part three presents three clinical cases. The first one, based on two dreams, allows us to draw a parallel between the japanese image of oni and the Greek god pan. Then, we attempt a transcultural interpretation, comparing the tale of amor and psyche and the Japanese legend of Tanabata. The second clinical case is centered on a drawing and the third on a dream
