Full textSelf-esteem is defined by the « feeling of self-appreciation ». It is built in childhood then evolves with the social environment and life events. College years corresponding generally to the period of young adulthood and is a particular developmental period due to changes in the social environment and frequent problems of mental health and substance use. It is also a period of vulnerability for self-esteem. College years could therefore be an interesting period to investigate the specific links between self-esteem and health. The purpose of this thesis was to conduct epidemiological studies to estimate the links between self-esteem and health behaviors, physical and mental health among university students.First, a systematic review of the literature synthesized empirical evidence on the relationships between self-esteem and health-related behaviors (i.e. substance use, sexual behavior, physical activity, and nutrition). High self-esteem was associated with more physical activity and less extreme health-related behaviors (extreme alcohol consumption, use of condoms). However, mixed results regarding alcohol consumption and number of sexual partners and a lack of research for smoking, drug use and nutrition have been highlighted. Next, two studies were conducted on a sub-sample of the i-Share cohort; a prospective French longitudinal study following nearly 15,000 volunteers studying at the university since 2013. Thus, the second study of this thesis aimed at estimating the association between self-esteem and self-rated health one year after. Of the 1,011 participants included in the study, 20% reported having average or poor health. Students with higher self-esteem were more likely to have a better perception of their health (odds ratio = 1.4, 95% confidence interval = 1.2 to 1.7). A third study aimed to investigate the mediating role of self-esteem in the link between ADHD symptoms and suicidal thoughts. Of the 2,631 participants included in the study, 17% reported having suicidal thoughts at one-year follow-up. ADHD symptoms were associated with suicidal thoughts (beta = 0.2, 95% confidence interval = 0.1 to 0.2). Self-esteem mediated 44% of the total effect and was involved in 60% of the total effect when depression was also a mediator.Self-esteem is a factor of interest in youth health and interventional research could target this psychological factor. Furthermore, because the concept of self-esteem is complex and the study population was specific, further researches could be conducted to confirm these results with different measurement tools of self-esteem (especially to reveal multidimensional aspect) and representative populations

Full textDepression is a public health problem and constitutes the most frequently psychic manifestation observed among students. Its prevalence is much higher (30%) than in the other populations. Depression among students can have negative impacts on their social, relational situation and significantly impact their quality of life. Depression is misdiagnosed, misdetected and thus mistreated. Students with depressive disorders have negative thoughts. The examination of both negative and positive thoughts contributes to a better understanding of depression. The aim of the work is to develop tools for self-assessments of depression and thoughts and to show the effectiveness of Positive Thoughts (PT) against depression, anxiety, stress and their symptoms in students. We also study the links between individual and psychosocial factors (demographic, socio-economic and academic variables) and mental disorders. Firstly, we assess depression, and positive and negative thoughts using questionnaires that we validate. This is the first study confirming the internal, external and factorial validity of the questionnaire positive and negative thoughts (ATQ-18-Fr), but also the Beck depression questionnaire (BDI-FS-Fr) and thus attesting to their relevance in French. The evaluation shows that mental disorders are associated with these thoughts and certain individual and psychosocial factors and vary according to these factors. Secondly, treatment and remission of depression are implemented by repetition of positive thoughts (RPT). They significantly reduce depressive, anxious and stress symptoms, with a short-term sustained and significant effect, and thus improve the mental health of subjects

Full textThis Doctoral study tries to check the characteristics present of mental health positive in the university French and Colombian students of the faculty of medicine, bearing in mind that the entry to the university life provokes a level of stress with relation the new demands to which the student must face. All the university students cross in a period of adjustment that well can culminate in an appropriate way, or in desertion motivated by the academic difficulties or by the inability to adapt to the context. he university students can have major trend to this type of disorders that the majority of the population for the age and the external factors which they face, although many students do not face only the academic load, but also they enter to the labour market or establish a family, being constituted in an important problem because to the psychological discomfort one adds the low yield, the loss and repetition of the semesters or academic years and desertion of the programs, besides the high costs for the families. This implies that in the particular case of the students, nowadays not only one speaks about the psychological discomforts that they can present and his possible consequences, but even of certain characteristics that on having been present, can promote his mental health, for example, Arriola (2002) raises that " in the relating thing to the sphere of personality it is important that the pupils have a locus of internal control, a discharge autoestimates and puntajes minimums of depressive symptoms. As for the part of the personality, it is important that the students had a mechanism of internal control, a car estimates importantly, and the minimum of symptoms of depression. For this reason before the high possibilities of repitencia or student desertion corresponds to the teachers and executives to know and to describe the mental positive health that the university students possess, to turn it into an element that reinforces the existing programs, where the prevention prevails mas that the concept of disease and realizes a contribution to the process of adjustment and suitable utilization of the students in his step along the university. As well as Coordinator of specializations and University Teacher, is, my interest to study the levels of mental positive Health in different sociocultural contexts that take us to the construction of a theory that there include the alternatives of support that assure the best adjustment of the students to the university area

Full textUsing the 2x2 achievement goal framework (Elliot & McGregor, 2001), our objective was to validate a model that includes personality, program of study, achievement goals and contingent self-esteem in order to explain why some students are more likely to experience shame, guilt, and anxiety during their college education. A total of 172 psychology, education and social work undergraduates participated in this study. Results from path analysis partially supported our hypotheses. More precisely, results show that students whose self-esteem is contingent on their academic performances are more at risk to experience feelings of guilt, shame and anxiety during their studies. Furthermore, ours results suggest that the program of study can be a predictor of student’s achievement goals. Compared to students in education and social work, psychology undergraduates were more likely to have performance-approach goals. In turn, these performance-approach goals exerted a positive predictive influence on contingent self-esteem. Results are discussed in light of the 2 x 2 achievement goal framework and the contingent self-esteem literature.

Full textContext: University students are the most affected by stress, psychological distress and their consequences (physical and mental). They are more vulnerable to mental disorders than the general population and other students because of the many changes and responsibilities that come with studying at the university. On the one hand, this thesis aims to better understand the psychological ill being of university students, and on the other hand, to look at ways to face this problem.Format of the thesis: This thesis is articulated in two axes. The first focuses on the evaluation of mental health, including stress, among a sample of university students (Part I: Mental Health among University Students: Theoretical Perspectives and Empirical Studies). The second focuses on the development and the evaluation of a stress management intervention for these students (Part II: Students Stress Management: Theoretical Perspectives and Empirical Studies). For each, a review of the literature on the concepts studied, as well as a review of empirical studies, was conducted in the form of articles (published or in progress). The purpose of this dissertation is therefore dual and is articulated around ten articles; Conclusion: Despite some limitations, our results constitute new and promising contributions on stress management online for university students. This proposal for an intervention online could be particularly aimed at students who do not consult

Full textPsychological distress is prevalent among university students. It is associated with serious consequences such as academic failure, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts. This thesis examines the phenomenon of psychological distress among Canadian undergraduates and, especially, Laval University undergraduates. First, a summary of the literature about factors associated with psychological distress among Canadian university students has been achieved through a systematic review of the literature followed by a meta-analysis. The meta-analysis identified the following factors as being significantly associated with psychological distress: female sex, perfectionism, and low social support. Secondly, this thesis tried to uncover the meaning that Laval University students give to the relationship between psychological distress and some factors identified in the scientific literature. To grasp the perceptions of university students, focus groups were conducted. The results of the focus groups allowed the construction of a conceptual diagram about the experience of distress among university students with four components: students’ characteristics, studies’ characteristics, social support’s characteristics and the context of our study. Thirdly, some information obtained through this thesis was sent to Laval University staff and students’ associations’ representatives via a digital leaflet. After reading the digital leaflet, a significant increase in the perception of knowledge and personal efficacy was observed among participants. This thesis is, to our knowledge, the first research to include as diverse methodologies to study the phenomenon of psychological distress and its related factors among university students.

Full textThe main objective of this study was to achieve a global mental health perspective in a population of military medical students, over targeted years of the curriculum by determining the extent of burnout. The secondary objectives were to propose an interdisciplinary understanding of psychic problems, to highlight individual, collective and situational risk factors favoring the possible appearance of psychic disorders, to identify institutional support points or to developed ones.A mixed methodology combining quantitative and qualitative study was used. This is a cross-sectional study repeated quantitatively and descriptively by an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. Professional burnout was assessed by the MBI-GS for 1st and 2nd year students, by the MBI-HSS for students in the 4th and 8th years.393 self-questionnaires were distributed, 327 were collected and 261 were analyzed, an overall response rate of 83.20%. The average age of the population was 21. 5 years, 46% were men, 54% were women; 35.6% were in the first year of study, 14.9% were in the second year, 23.8% were in the fourth year, and 25.7% were residents in the eighth year. Among the residents, 82.1% were general practitioners and 17.9% were specialty hospital residents. These scores corresponded to an overall percentage of students with a high emotional exhaustion of 12.3%. 25.3% expressed a strong depersonalization and 18.6% a low personal achievement. The percentage of residents with high emotional exhaustion was 35.7%; 38.0% expressed a strong depersonalization and 37.1% a low personal achievement. The study showed that median scores of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization was worsening significantly (p < 0.001). The median personal achievement scores remained moderate from the first to the 8th grade, not increasing at the end of the university; 9.8% of 4th year and 21.2% of 8th year students had suicidal ideation or made a suicide attempt. The qualitative study by grounded theory showed that becoming a military doctor implies personal antecedents marked by ideal and identification. It is a matter of being both a doctor and a military in a constrained temporality marked by the sometimes inadequate learning of medical scientific knowledge and a military ethos where the influence of groups is fundamental. The tensions between knowledge and power are marked, especially in the violence of confrontation with death. Feelings varied between men and women, but the association of military norms and injunctions with the medical lifestyle leads to an overall negative feeling of anxiety, loneliness and major uncertainty about the future. Different strategies for prevention and medical management are proposed

Full textTo assess the internet and smartphones behaviour change during confinement, and to understand the impact of covid-19 on wellbeing, substance use disorder, and internet addiction disorder, two cross sectional online studies were conducted in Lebanon and France. Results showed a change towards a problematic use of internet and smartphones during confinement. The time passed online, as well as certain specific activities predicted this behaviour change. Wellbeing was not a mediator of the effect of covid-19 infection on addictions. Predictors of wellbeing, nicotine abuse, alcohol dependence, substances abuse, and problematic internet and smartphone use were presented

Full textStudying while being an elite athlete is a demanding challenge that student-athletes (SAs) try to meet. Each role, student and athlete, comes with demands that are likely to alter their mental health. In the sport-school dual career literature, the relationship between these roles has often been seen as conflicting, such that involvement in sport would be detrimental to school, and vice versa. However, other studies have shown that involvement in school can help to develop skills or knowledge that facilitate involvement or performance in sport, and vice versa. In other words, both roles are mutually enriched. In spite of these results, the majority of studies carried out among SAs have focused mainly on factors related to sport context, neglecting those specific to the dual career and their consequences on SAs’ mental health. Therefore, the stake of this doctoral dissertation was to better understand the interactions between the student and athlete roles and their relationships with the mental health of SAs, in order to answer the following question: How can we facilitate the management of sport-school dual careers to promote mental health among SAs? To this end, the aims were (1) to review studies on the relationships between role interactions and health in order to identify the knowledge and limitations of the literature, (2) to understand how SAs experience and reconcile their dual roles, (3) to identify and measure the interactions between these two roles, and (4) to examine the relationships between these role interactions and the mental health of SAs.First, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to determine how previous work has considered the interactions between the student and athlete roles, and the consequences on SAs’ health (Contribution 1). The first line of work was focused on the French the translation and validation of a tool that measures the salience of the academic and athletic identities of SAs, and on the examination of the additive and interactive relationships between these identities and athletic well-being (Contribution 2). Building on research on work-family interactions, we then considered the more proximal role of conflict and enrichment between the student and athlete roles in predicting well-being. Given the lack of tools to assess these constructs, we translated, adapted, and validated a scale from the work-family interactions literature, to measure negative and positive sport-school interactions (Contribution 3). Semi-structured interviews were conducted among SAs to test the relevance of this conceptualisation, by identifying the diversity of conflicts and enrichments that may exist in a dual career context (Contribution 4). Then, our work focused on the relationships between sport-school interactions and mental health. In a person-centred study, we identified latent profiles for sport-school interactions and examined their unique relationships with athletic well-being (Contribution 5). Finally, in a follow-up study carried out with SAs in training centres, we examined whether intra-individual weekly variations in sport-school conflicts and enrichments were related to weekly variations in athletic and academic well-being (Contribution 6).Overall, this doctoral work contributes to the understanding of factors related to SAs mental health of and offers promising perspectives for adaptations to facilitate the sport-school dual career and improve SAs’ mental health
