Abstract:
The article is devoted to the semantics of the Proto-Slavic word *kъrkъ, whose descendants have a wide range of meanings from ‘throat’ to ‘back’. The analysis presented shows that the Proto-Slavic word can be most probably reconstructed to mean ‘vertebra prominens / cervical vertebrae’. With this taken into account, the author looks at the previously proposed etymologies and puts forward a new one.

Abstract This paper provides a new interpretation of a type of etymological explanation (T) characteristic of Yāska’s Nirukta. The proposed interpretation sheds light on Yāska’s distinctive ideas on the relation between semantics and etymology. Exemplified by the occurrence meghaḥ … mehati iti sataḥ, T conveys the following information: the noun to be explained is a name (nāman-) that denotes a certain thing (sattva-) as characterized by a certain action. In the example, the noun meghaḥ is a name that denotes the thing cloud as emitting rain-water (mehati). T operates with two ideas intersecti

This paper aims to explain the meaning of syntax, how the syntactic structure is, to describe the units that compose sentences in English and to explain the differences between phrases, words, clauses, and morphemes. The term Semantics is known from the English Semantics. Actually, there are two branches of linguistics that specifically study words, namely etymology, the study of word origin, and semantics, the study of word meaning. In Indonesian Semantics comes from the Greek 'sema' (noun) which means 'sign' or 'symbol'. The verb is 'semaino' which means 'to mark' or 'to symbolize'. Signs or

Etymological analysis in toponymy involves the disclosure of the semantics of the name. The semantic aspect of the study is of great importance. Although almost all research scientists are focused on the semantics of the name, this aspect has not yet been fully analyzed. Currently, there is a need to develop a reliable, scientifically based reasoned methodology in the study of the semantics of a toponym, including a substratum toponym. Such technique can be developed only with a comprehensive study of the semantics of toponyms in each territory, in each language, along with the general, specif

The history of how humans discovered percussion methods of fi re-lighting presupposes the primacy of the meaning ‘cut, hew' for Proto-Slavic *kresati, the ‘fi re striking' semantics of the verb being a more recent development. The article argues for the hypothesis that the noun *krasa, denoting a craf-ted piece perfect in shape = a beautiful object (cf. the motivational pattern of Latin formosus ‘shapely, beautiful'), could be a derivative of *kresati. The ‘fi re making' semantics developed by *kresati would in its turn moti-vate the shift towards the meaning ‘red (color)', by association with

The incised inscription on a fifth century BC strigil from Aiani, in Elimeia, Macedonia, is revisited. The first editor read Ἄπαϙος, the owner’s name, so far unattested and of unknown etymology and formation. A new reading is suggested here, Ἄπαρος (nominative), known also as a Thessalian personal name of the Archaic period. The etymology, the formation and the semantics of this personal name offer new evidence for the lexicon of ancient Macedonian
