The article is devoted to the semantics of the Proto-Slavic word *kъrkъ, whose descendants have a wide range of meanings from ‘throat’ to ‘back’. The analysis presented shows that the Proto-Slavic word can be most probably reconstructed to mean ‘vertebra prominens / cervical vertebrae’. With this taken into account, the author looks at the previously proposed etymologies and puts forward a new one.

The proposed interpretation sheds light on Yāska’s distinctive ideas on the relation between semantics and etymology. Exemplified by the occurrence meghaḥ … mehati iti sataḥ, T conveys the following information: the noun to be explained is a name (nāman-) that denotes a certain thing (sattva-) as characterized by a certain action. In the example, the noun meghaḥ is a name that denotes the thing cloud as emitting rain-water (mehati). T operates with two ideas intersecti

The article aims at presenting a procedure of systemic description of the linguistic characteristics inherent in lexemes in Germanic languages. The present research is of a complex nature. A complex approach exercised to achieve the goals of the research suggests addressing a number of consecutive descriptive tasks pertaining to particular linguistic aspects, to wit: etymology, morphonology, semantics and word-formation. The analysis focuses on the Old English noun ‘weorold’ intended to examplify the typical formal procedure of description. The scientific methods used in the course of the rese

The article studies the specific semantics and pragmatics of the Russian words bog (god) and chert (devil) in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita against the background of their popular use reflected in dictionaries of the Russian literary language; the etymology of the words as well as their various connotations and associations are also considered. Having put the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication to the test, the research reveals that none of them is adequate to convey Bulgakov’s creative vision to English-speaking audiences

This argument is untenable, not only because it is based on an outmoded approach to the Semitic noun system, but also because it fails to explain how came simultaneously to denote ‘si

Differences are observed only in the relatively small number of names borrowed from neighboring Caucasian peoples, characteristic of the anthroponyms of Mountain Jews. Another difference is the presence in it of a number of names that have a clear Mountain-Jewish etymology. These include a fairly large group of female names with floral semantics. Current theories place very mild constraints on possible diachronic changes, something at odds with the trivial observation that actual, “language change” represents a tiny fraction of the variation made a priori available by Universal Grammar. Much recent work in diachronic syntax has actually been guided by the aim of describing changes (e.g., parameter resetting), rather than by concerns of genuine explanation. Here I suggest a radically different viewpoint (the Inertial, Theory of diachronic syntax), namely, that syntactic change not provably due to interference should not occur at all as
