Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag analysiert zunächst die Bedeutung des Ordo-Gedankens nach dem deutschen Nationalökonom Walter Eucken, dem Begründer des Ordoliberalismus der Freiburger Schule. Danach werden, im Anschluss an die Denkschrift des Freiburger Bonhoeffer-Kreises, die Rolle und die normative Dimension des christlichen Glaubens für das Denken Euckens sowie für seine ordnungsökonomischen und ordnungspolitischen Auffassungen untersucht. Dabei wird auch auf die Konvergenz zwischen Euckens Ordoliberalismus und der christlichen Sozialethik eingegangen.

ZusammenfassungIn den Werken und in den veröffentlichten Briefen von Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883–1950) und Walter Eucken (1891–1950) finden wir nur wenige Bezüge auf das Werk des jeweils anderen. Es scheint, als ob Eucken und Schumpeter kaum Notiz voneinander nahmen. In seinem späten, postum herausgegebenen Werk „Grundsätze der Wirtschaftspolitik“ kritisiert Eucken Schumpeter scharf. Wir edieren und kommentieren in unserem Beitrag 16 Briefe von Schumpeter aus dem Nachlass von Walter Eucken. Diese Briefe zeigen eine enge wissenschaftliche und persönliche Beziehung zwischen den beiden Ökonomen zwischen 1926 und 1933 und belegen, dass Eucken Ende der 1920er Jahre wichtige Elemente von Schumpeters Entwicklungstheorie aufgriff.

Abstract:

Variations and disparities between von Hayek and Ordoliberalism can be detected on diverse levels: 1. philosophy of science; 2. setting dissimilar priorities; 3. social philosophy; 4. genesis of norms; and, 5. notion of freedom. Therefore, it is possible to make an important distinction within neoliberalism itself, which contains at least two factions: von Hayek’s evolutionary liberalism, and German Ordoliberalism. The following essay not only takes the neoliberal separation of different varieties as granted; it proceeds further. It focuses on the topic of justice and elaborates the (slightly) differing conceptions of justice within neoliberalism. Thus, the specific contribution of the paper is that it adds a sixth dimension of difference (which is highly interconnected with the differing conceptions of genesis of norms). In this paper, I emphasize the (often neglected) subtle differences between von Hayek, Eucken, Röpke, and Rüstow, with special emphasis on their theories of justice. In this regard, I focus not only on Eucken and von Hayek; in addition, I include the concepts of justice developed by Rüstow and Röpke, as well, and, in consequence, broaden the perspective incorporating Eucken as a member of the Freiburg School of Law and Economics, and Rüstow and Röpke as representatives of Ordoliberalism in the wider sense. The paper tackles these topics in three steps. After briefly examining and discussing the existing literature and providing a literature overview on the decade-long debate on von Hayek and Ordoliberalism, I then describe von Hayek’s conception of commutative justice; particularly, justice of rules and procedures (rather than end-state justice). Then, I examine Eucken’s, Rüstow’s, and Röpke’s theories of justice, which consist of a mixture of commutative and distributive justice. Then, I draw a comparison between the ideas of justice developed by Eucken, Röpke, Rüstow, and von Hayek. The essay ends with a summary of my main findings.

Abstract:

Ordoliberalism is a German economic and legal doctrine, in which ethics occupies a privileged place. The basic premise is the freedom and responsibility of human beings. In contrast, the starting point for considering ordoliberalism as a doctrine is the economic, social and political order. The most prominent representative of ordoliberalism was Walter Eucken. Achievements of this outstanding economist as well as other representatives of this school underlay the concept of the German social market economy and the EU competition policy. The aim of this article is to present the concept of Eucken’s competitive order and describe its philosophical and ethical foundation. The article relies on descriptive analysis and literature studies.

ZusammenfassungWas ist das geld(-ordnungs)theoretische Anliegen der Freiburger Schule? Wie entstand es und worauf zielt die hier vorgestellte Geldordnungstheorie ab? Diese Fragen werden in dem vorliegenden Beitrag dogmenhistorisch untersucht und ordnungsökonomisch eingeordnet. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Gründungsgeneration der Freiburger Schule um Walter Eucken unterschiedliche Geldordnungsvorschläge vorlegte, um eine Geldverfassung institutionell so auszugestalten, dass sie das Leistungskriterium der Geldwertstabilität langfristig erfüllen kann. Die Geldsystemtheorie Euckens und ihre Rückbindung an die Kapitaltheorie liefern den theoretischen Ausgangspunkt der Geldordnungstheorie. Die Zeitgebundenheit dieser Theorie und der konkreten Vorschläge widersprechen ihrer Rekonstruktion, um sie für die aktuelle Debatte um die Reform der EWU wieder einzuführen. Wer an dieser Frage interessiert ist, wird in diesem Beitrag keine Antworten finden.

Abstract:

Abstract Walter Eucken formulated his concept of economic order as a solution to the tension between theoretical approaches and empirical observation that had constituted the conflict between the Austrian School of Economics and the German Historical School. Previous literature has established the linkage between the German-language business cycle debate of the late 1920 s and Eucken’s concept of economic order. This paper discusses how his concept of economic order can help to understand the severity of economic crises and thus concentrates on the elements constituting the economic order, i. e. its ideal types, with whose help Eucken aimed to derive hypothetical propositions. Based on the writings of his students Leonhard Miksch and Friedrich A. Lutz who underscored the role of equilibrium in business cycle research, this paper suggests that abstract theory of economic crises should employ ideal types as models and thus study how exogenous shocks affect the endogenous economic variables. The subject of inquiry should be oriented to the process of equilibrium reestablishment. Crucial for this paper is that the equilibrium reestablishment depends on institutional factors. This method to explain economic crises represents the link which connects the business cycle debate of the 1920 s and 1930 s to the subsequent emergence of the ordoliberal theory of institutions and orders.

Abstract Michel Foucault’s lectures at the Collège de France in 1978–1979 centered on the analysis of power with regard to liberalism. Foucault especially focused on German ordoliberalism and its specific governmentality. Although Foucault’s review of the ordoliberal texts, programs, and books is very accurate there are some occasional “schematic” simplifications. Our article evaluates Foucault’s constitution of an ordoliberal “archive,” though more emphasis is placed on the general importance of the phenomenological orientation in Walter Eucken’s work. Hence, three tasks guide our paper: first, an analysis of Foucault’s position; second, the phenomenological foundation of ordoliberal discourse compared to 18th century liberal discourse, i.e. the way in which Walter Eucken received Husserl. Third, our article raises the subject of the mutual historical-epistemological complementation of philosophy and economics by taking Foucault’s analysis as the starting point. Furthermore, the consequences of a phenomenological, i.e. “eidetic” order of the economy, is discussed, focusing mainly on the expansion of competition in social domains. JEL Codes: B20, B29, B40

Abstract:

Abstract The thermal conductivity of polypropylene (PP) composites filled with Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2 was measured by means of the stable flat measuring instrument at different testing temperatures. The effective thermal conductivity of the composites was estimated by applying the thermal conductivity equation proposed previously, and the estimations were compared with the experimental measured data under the same experimental conditions. The results showed that the calculations and measurements of the effective thermal conductivity were close to each other when the volume fraction of the Al(OH)3/Mg(OH)2 powder was <10.4%. Moreover, the effective thermal conductivity of the composites was estimated using the Russell model and the Maxwell-Eucken model, and the predictions were compared with the experimental data and the estimations of this equation. It was found that the estimations of this equation were closer to the experimental data than those of the Russell model and Maxwell-Eucken model.

Initial work on high thermal conductivity was carried out in 1911 by Eucken, who discovered that diamond was a reasonably good conductor for heat at room temperature. Theoretical support for this discovery was established by Debye in 1914.

Abstract:

The article deals with the relation between assumptions of economic theories and their political implications. Two canons of economic science are being analyzed according to the degree of abstraction. A hypothesis is that the more abstract formal canon is connected with a liberal kind of economic policy whereas the more concrete canon presupposes an active state intervention in economic affairs. Several attempts at integrating both canons are studied separately (Marshall, Schumpeter, Eucken). Historic evidence is more or less consistent with the hypothesis stated above, but there happens to be one important exclusion: the general equilibrium theory is so abstract that it can imply opposite policies.

Abstract:

AlN/epoxy (AlN/EP) composites were fabricated by casting method. The effects of the AlN content on microstructure, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion properties of composites were investigated. The results indicate that with the AlN content increasing, the thermal conductivity increase, while the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) decreases. When the volume fraction of AlN is 25%, the thermal conductivity is 0.507 W/m•K, which is about 2.5 times higher than that of the epoxy matrix, while the coefficient of thermal expansion is 53.7 ppm/°C. The thermal conductivity results obtained were also analyzed using the Maxwell-Eucken model to explain the effect of AlN fillers on the formation of thermal conductive networks.

Abstract Erhards Konzeption einer sozialen Marktwirtschaft durch marktwirtschaftlichen Wettbewerb ist auch heute noch wegweisend. Doch wurde die Idee des Sozialen im Programm der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft mit der Zeit verfälscht. Zudem beruht Erhards Konzept auf einer wettbewerbstheoretischen Grundlage – dem neoklassischen Modell der vollständigen Konkurrenz –, die seinen wohlstandsfördernden Intentionen zuwiderläuft. Erhards Position stimmte mit derjenigen der Freiburger Schule (Walter Eucken, Franz Böhm) nur teilweise überein, unterscheidet sich aber ebenso in wesentlichen Punkten vom Denken der Österreichischen Schule der National-ökonomie (Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich August Hayek) und deren dynamisch-evolutionärem Verständnis von Wettbewerb. Gerade für eine im Sinne Erhards wettbewerbsorientierte Konzeption der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft erscheint das Österreichische Verständnis von Wettbewerb als das realitätsnähere und adäquatere.

Abstract:

Industrial emissions used as admixture in foam concrete not only save resources, but also improve the properties of foam concrete. In this paper the thermal properties of steel slag fly ash foamed concrete was studied through experiments, and the results were analyzed. This paper included several of them and validated them using test dates, compared the results with other researchers. The result is the general model can predict the thermal conductivity of foam concrete better. Maxwell-Eucken model can regard as the boundaries’ formula to predict the coefficient of thermal conductivity of foam concrete and determine the limits. For the same density with the increasing of the steel slag thermal conductivity increases, specific heat decreases. The porosity is linear to the density of foam concrete.

Abstract:

The article asks which human qualities can serve as the base for a liberal economic policy. The author is looking for an answer to this question in the classical works of economic liberalism - in the books by F. Bastiat, L. von Mises, F. von Hayek, W. Eucken, and M. Friedman. The two main qualities can be summarized as follows: the relatively high rank of freedom among human values and rational utilitarian calculus. It is assumed that in those countries where the both human prerequisites are present the liberal policy (for instance, liberal reforms) can be self-supportive and may have good results. On the contrary, if the first prerequisite is missing and a liberal policy can be based only on rational calculus, the “paternalistic” liberalism prevails and chances for success are much smaller.

Abstract The scientific aim of the paper is to juxtapose the views on economic order developed by the leading representatives of two schools of liberal thinking – German ordoliberal Walter Eucken and the Austrian economist Friedrich August von Hayek. The first scholar opted for deliberately constructed competitive economic order, the second one advocates for allowing the social institutions to emerge and evolve spontaneously. The analysis proves the similarity of both theories in regard to the significance of principles of an economic order and the importance of competition for maintaining individual freedom. On the other hand some differences in the areas of sources of rules, institutional change, and the role of the state, induce their complementarity. Developing an intellectual basis for economic policy requires an eclectic approach combining two analysed perspectives.

In this Paper, Five Fundamental Effective Thermal Conductivity Structural Models (Series, Parallel, Two Forms of Maxwell-Eucken and Effective Medium Theory) Were Used to Analyze and Design Silicon Nitride Porous Ceramics. Then α-Si3N4Matrix Porous Ceramics Were Prepared with ZrP2O7as a Binder and Thermal Conductivity of ZrP2O7Bonded Si3N4Porous Ceramic Was Evaluated. ZrP2O7Bonded Si3N4Porous Ceramic Had Open and Interconnected Pore Structure which is either in EMT or in Maxwell-Euken 2. The Thermal Conductivity of ZrP2O7Bonded Si3N4Porous Ceramics Changes from 2.0 to 0.5 W/m•K with Increasing the Porosity from 20% to 51%. The Obtained Results Showed that the External Porosity Material with Maxwell-Euken 2 Structure Had the Lowest Thermal Conductivity in All Porous Materials. The Open and Interconnected Pore Structure of ZrP2O7Bonded Si3N4Porous Ceramics Provided much Lower Thermal Conductivity.

Abstract:

The article analyzes from the case of Friedrich von Hügel what the special interest of Roman Catholic Modernism in mysticism was about. Different from major tendencies in modernist research, it places his work in the framework of the discourse on “religious experience” around 1900. This way it becomes visible that von Hügel’s account of mysticism was shaped to a great extent by scholars from a liberal Protestant background, such as William James, Rudolf Eucken, and Ernst Troeltsch. In engaging these scholars, von Hügel was able to develop his own concept of the “mystical element” of religion from the perspective of a Catholic believer. The case of von Hügel suggests that Roman Catholic Modernism in general should be studied more in connection with its scientific setting outside Catholic theology.

This paper discusses Max Scheler’s early works, written between 1899 and 1906 in a neo-Kantian context. The very little attention the literature paid to them was almost always guided by the only aim to single the themes out which can be used as signs of Scheler’s future „conversion“ to phenomenology. In consequence of this predominant approach, the neo- Kantianism that characterizes Scheler’s early works has been treated as a vague notion and never examined as such. The paper specifies this notion through an examination of Scheler’s early works which shows their most significant theoretical debts (to R. Eucken, W. Windelband and particularly to H. Cohen) and the questions they deal with, i.e. the relation between knowledge and morality as different kinds of objective forms of experience; the methodological problem in philosophy; the development of a transcendental logic as general science of objectivity.

Cutting temperature is the main factor to be considered in the select of coated cutting tools, so the study on the temperature of coated cutting tools is of practical significance. Diffusion layer of coated cutting tools has important implications on cutting heat generation and temperature distribution. In this paper, thickness of diffusion layer is determined by making use of spectrum analysis method to observe elements diffusion between coating and substrate of coated cutting tools. By dividing the diffusion layer into two parts on both sides of interface of coating and substrate, diffusion layer model is established. By integrated use of calculation method of Maxwll-Eucken model, Series model and equivalent thermal conductivity of multi-layer materials, thermal conductivity calculation formula of diffusion layer is derived. Method of thermal conductivity calculation when combining coating and diffusion layer into a whole layer is also put forward. Results of this paper have wide significance for experiment and simulation study on coated cutting tool temperature.

AbstractThe paper interrogates the argument put forward by Acemoglu and Robinson or North et al. that capitalism and democracy are supportive to each other. It analyzes the development of political and economic institutions in Germany before and after World War I. It is shown that the lack of democracy in Imperial Germany furthered a liberal economic order and gives reasons why the transition to full-scale parliamentarianism would have impaired the quality of economic institutions. This also explains why such a transition was not completed. The Weimar Republic established a modern democracy but was unable to secure the quality of economic institutions achieved before. Not only in Germany did the politicization of the economy impair the economic order. This empirical outcome helps to explain why Eucken and other liberals identified democracy as part of the economic problem during the interwar period. It also gives reasons to rethink the complex relationship between capitalism and democracy.

Abstract:

Diamond-particle-dispersed copper (Cu) matrix composites were fabricated from Cu-coated diamond particles by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process, and the microstructure and thermal properties of the composites fabricated were examined. These composites can well be consolidated in a temperature range between 973K and 1173K and scanning electron microscopy detects no reaction at the interface between the diamond particle and the Cu matrix. The relative packing density of the diamond-Cu composite increases with increasing sintering temperature and holding time, reaching 99.2% when sintered at a temperature of 1173K for a holding time of 2.1ks. Thermal conductivity of the diamond-Cu composite containing 43.2 vol. % diamond increases with increasing relative packing density, reaching a maximum (654W/mK) at a relative packing density of 99.2%. This thermal conductivity is 83% the theoretical value estimated by Maxwell-Eucken equation. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites falls in the upper line of Kerner’s model, indicating strong bonding between the diamond particle and the Cu matrix in the composite.

Abstract:

Thermal behavior of luffa and coir reinforced epoxy composites have been evaluated for a constant total fiber volume fraction 0.4Vf by varying the ratio of luffa and coir fiber. Thermal conductivity of luffa-epoxy and luffa-coir reinforced epoxy composite was studied experimentally and analytically in terms of fiber size and fiber volume. Thermal conductivity of composites was investigated experimentally by a guarded heat flow meter method. The experimental results at different volume fraction were compared with three theoretical models. The composite C has the lowest thermal conductivity of 0.206 W/mk with 0.81 % of voids. The experimental values of thermal conductivity of hybrid composites are the good correlation with the Maxwell and Maxwell-Eucken models. As in a case of 0.4 Vf of luffa-epoxy composites these values are closer to the rule of mixture models. The thermal stability of the composites was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. This result reveals that the hybridization of luffa and coir with epoxy allows a significantly improved insulation ability of the composites.
