Abstract:

Comme les œuvres qui le précèdent : Herr Ivan en 1302 et Hertig Fredrik av Normandi en 1308, Flores och Blanzeflor fut composé en vers par un clerc inconnu sur l’ordre de la reine Eufemia de Norvège sans doute à l’occasion du mariage de sa fille Ingeborg avec le duc suédois Erik. La présente thèse propose d’envisager la traduction de Flores och Blanzeflor comme un acte politique de la part d’Eufemia. En offrant ces traductions à sa fille et son futur gendre d’abord, mais aussi plus généralement à l’aristocratie suédoise ensuite, la reine va en effet pouvoir contourner les interdits sociaux liés à son rang et à son genre et faire entendre sa voix dans le conflit qui agite au début du XIVème siècle les aristocraties scandinaves, conflit dont son futur gendre est l’un des acteurs principaux. Le duc Erik et son frère Valdemar étaient en effet engagés depuis les premières années du XIVème siècle dans un conflit de succession avec leur frère Birger, roi de Suède. Les Couronnes de Norvège et de Danemark, par le truchement des alliances, se trouvèrent elles aussi engagées dans la dispute, faisant de ce conflit d’abord interne à l’aristocratie suédoise un conflit pan-scandinave. Si les thèmes de la relation du souverain avec l’aristocratie sont de fait très présents dans Flores och Blanzeflor, le roman ne s’y limite pas, mais aborde aussi des problématiques contemporaines pour l’aristocratie scandinave, notamment la question de la Croisade et de la lutte contre les païens. Flores och Blanzeflor is a 1312 Old Swedish version of the French roman Le Conte de Floire et Blanchefleur. The text is part of the Eufemiavisorna, a group of three continental romans translated into Old Swedish at the beginning of the XIVth century by an unknown cleric on the order of Queen Eufemia of Norway, possibly to celebrate her daughter’s marriage to Duke Erik of Sweden. The present thesis argues that those translations can be read as political acts from Queen Eufemia. The translations allowed her to project her voice in the political space while still conforming to the social norms of her time. Flores och Blanzeflor is as such closely related with the political turmoil that preoccupied the Scandinavian aristocracy at the beginning of the XIVth century, a turmoil centered around the conflict between Duke Erik and his brother Duke Valdemar on one side and their brother King Birger on the other. Flores och Blanzeflor with its insistence on good relations between the king and the aristocracy and its depiction of a peaceful crusade reflects the preoccupations of the Scandinavian aristocracy at the time. The roman’s focus on providing an example of positive conduct with the Blanzeflor character can also be interpreted as a desire from Eufemia to provide her daughter with models of conduct for her future marriage. Abstract:

Den föreliggande uppsatsen utgörs av en filologisk undersökning av den medeltida dikten Hertig Fredrik av Normandie i 1400-tals handskrifterna D3, också känd som fru Elins bok, och D4a, också kallad fru Märtas bok, samt en transkription i synoptisk form av Hertig Fredrik i dessa båda handskrifter. Målet med uppsatsen är att bidra till forskningsfrågan om handskrift D3 bör betraktas som oberoende av D4a, som Britta Olriks Frederiksens och Agnieszka Backmans aktuella undersökningar från 2006 respektive 2017 har visat. För att pröva deras resultat har en komparativ undersökning gjorts av Hertig Fredrik i D3 och D4a med avseende på att utreda, beskriva och analysera de textkritiska skillnaderna mellan texten i D3 och texten i D4a. Undersökningens resultat visar att Hertig Fredrik i D3 inte borde betraktas som en avskrift av D4a utan som oavhängig av denna. Därmed kan det konstateras att också texten Hertig Fredrik stöder Frederiksens och Backmans resultat som förespråkar D3:s oberoende från D4a. Studien visar dock att Hertig Fredrik i D3 är en förkortad version i jämförelse med D4a och D4.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates the links between Chrétien de Troyes’ romance Le Chevalier au lion from the late twelfth century and the Old Swedish text Herr Ivan, written at the behest of Queen Eufemia of Norway at the beginning of the fourteenth century. The study has two parts. The first sets out to determine the sources of the Swedish text: Was Le Chevalier au lion really the source text of Herr Ivan? The second part raises the question of what happened to the courtly ideals that characterize the French romance when they were transferred into Swedish. The analysis of the question concerning the sources of Herr Ivan confirms that Le Chevalier au lion was the translator’s main source, while the Old Norse version Ívens saga, from the middle of the thirteenth century, was used as a secondary source. The relationship between Le Chevalier au lion, Ívens saga and Herr Ivan is examined through a comparison of the three texts: the choice of verse or prose, the role of prologues and epilogues, and the use of the voice of a narrator and of direct and indirect discourse. Four specific passages are compared at a micro-level. By comparing Herr Ivan to its sources, it becomes clear that the Swedish translator wanted to stress certain courtly ideals by presenting a distinct and coherent interpretation of what Chrétien de Troyes refers to as courtoisie. This indicates that the function of the text was to present a set of ideological and aesthetic values. The analysis of the transmission of courtly ideals takes its point of departure in the uses of the French word courtois and the Swedish equivalent hövisker. As a next step, three elements intimately linked to courtliness are examined: aventure, gaieté and honneur. Also the different roles played by the lion are highlighted. Finally, it is shown how the courtly ideals of Herr Ivan can be read in the light of the other Old Swedish texts written at the behest of Queen Eufemia: Hertig Fredrik av Normandie and Flores och Blanzeflor.

Abstract:

This dissertation contains a study of the multitext manuscript Codex Holmiensis D 3 based in Material Philology and its focus on the material conditions underlying manuscripts. The aim of the investigation is to describe D 3 in order to increase understanding of its material conditions including content and circumstance of copying, as well as its use and purpose. D 3 contains 14 text works in different genres, for example romances, chronicles, and edifying works. The paper manuscript in the format of a holster book has been dated through its watermarks to around 1487/1488. It was written for the noblewoman Elin Gustavsdotter (Sture). An older manuscript, Codex Holmiensis D 4a, has previously been identified as the exemplar of D 3. These manuscripts are very similar as regards language and content. However, it is shown here that D 4a could not have been the model for D 3 in the case of the romance Flores och Blanzeflor; nor can the manuscript as a whole be a copy of D 4a. There are few traces of use in D 3, but the first work, Herr Ivan Lejonriddaren, has several concluding texts before its final closing. These concluding texts suggest that parts of the work were being read while the rest was being copied. There are also dual quire signatures in this work, implying that the quires were in disarray, possibly because they were in use when the signatures were added. The purpose of D 3 was to educate and provide examples of good and bad behaviour for the nobility. Moreover, there is an owner-epilogue which also stresses courtly ideals and can be linked to the concept of exemplary behaviour. The contents can also be ordered thematically, with first a Carolingian connection, followed by one connected with Ireland and finally one focused on the Christian community. Codicological breaks divide the manuscript into two parts, which leads to the assumption of at least two common exemplars for D 3 and D 4a. An emphasis on the materiality of the manuscript reveals it to be not so much an unwieldy collection of unrelated text witnesses as a book created for a certain person and her time.

Abstract:

In medieval Sweden, translation played a major role in importing ideals from the continent that contributed towards laying the foundation for the establishment of courtly ideology, from the early 14th century onwards. The three translations customarily known as Eufemiavisor were the first major step in this process. The aim of this article is to provide some examples that help illustrate and discuss the nexus between aristocratic ideology and translation activity in Sweden during the 14th and the 15th centuries. Particular attention is given to seeking to explain the ideological purpose(s) that the selected texts (most of which are translations) were probably meant to serve by viewing them as part of an intertextual dialogue within the manuscript contexts in which they are preserved.
