Abstract:
In western translation theories, Lawrence Venuti and Eugene Nida appear to be standing at too opposing poles regarding the equivalence theory, and are notable for their prominent disagreement on the issue. Their theories diverge in their responses to equivalence, and disagree, essentially, on the functions of translation as well as the aspects of an acceptable translation. This disagreement unfolded itself clearly during a conference at Binghamton University in 1991. In this essay, I intend to juxtapose the exceptionally different theoretical approaches of these two prominent translation scholars. I also intend to show how Venuti’s views on translation in practice challenges Nida’s theoretical approaches to translation, and surprisingly enough his own theories particularly speaking, foreignizing and domesticating translations in which he has been extensively engaged. Finally I intend to show how Venuti’s practice of translation challenges his earlier attack on Nida’s conceptions of the “dynamic equivalence,” “naturalness of expression” (Nida 1964: 159) and the notion of “the equivalent effect” (de Waard & Nida 1986: 9).

Abstract:
This essay covers the translation of a fictional prose text from Russian to Swedish, the source text being the first chapter of Aleksey Tolstoy’s Chmuroe utro (Bleak Morning), the third part of his trilogy Choždenie po mukam (The Ordeal). A commentary of this translation is provided, where the linguistic abstractions encountered throughout the process are documented. My methodology attempts to emulate that of Eugene Nida and his principle of “Dynamic Equivalence”. This procedure is addressed in the commentary, as I explain how utilisation of Nida's theories can assist in overcoming the numerous peculiarities inherent to translation. I also deal with the issue regarding the first two books of the trilogy, which have already been translated into Swedish by another translator. In my work, I explain how and why I have chosen to relate to the earlier translation.

The aim of our dissertation is to examine the literalist theoretical view of Peter Newmark and the sociolinguistic theoretical view of Eugene Nida in the light of the interpretative theory of translation of Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer. Newmark and Nida are Anglophone theorists of translation, while Seleskovitch and Lederer are French theorists. We want to see how three theories from different linguistic worlds developed in the second part of the 20th century and at the same time compare and contrast them

The aim of this dissertation is to study the views of the Brazilian physician Raimundo Nina Rodrigues concerning the human races and the role of the crossing between different races in the constitution of the Brazilian people. It will try to check to what extent they were well grounded on the scientific knowledge of his time. This dissertation contains an introduction and four chapters. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the historical, social and scientific context of Nina Rodrigues time and his main contributions. Chapter 2 discusses Nina Rodrigues ideas concerning the human races, comparing them to the views which were generally adopted by other authors of his time. Chapter 3 analyses Nina Rodrigues views about the role of the crossing of different breeds in the constitution of the Brazilian people. Chapter 4 attempts to answer to the questions presented in the Introduction and makes some final remarks on the subject. Nina Rodrigues classification of human races (white, black and red) was different from the one which was adopted by most medical works of his time. He considered that some breeds were inferior to others, and that the same occurred in the case of crossbreds. Concerning the crossing between different races, he considered it as being harmful, except in the cases when it could bring back the characters of the purest race (white). In the different works he published during his life, he did not soften his views concerning the role of crossings between different races. This research led to the conclusion that Nina Rodrigues, in general, was not concerned in providing a foundation for his ideas related to the superiority/inferiority of races, or about crossbreds. His way of dealing with the issue of the composition of the Brazilian people, arguing for its whitening a view that was also advocated by the Brazilian elite was loaded with preconceptions and it was almost completely devoid of any foundation as regards the scientific knowledge of that time

This thesis is based on the translation theory, which is called functional equivalent, of Eugene A. Nida. The first purpose is to find the differences from proper noun, titles of chapters, closest natural equivalent, expansions, reductions and mistranslation of two Chinese translations, which original is known as “Die Mittagsfrau” from Julia Franck. One of the translators comes from China and the other comes from Taiwan. Although these two translations are written in Chinese, there are still many differences. And the second purpose is to analyze and to criticize their translation strategies. Eugene A. Nida thinks that anything can be said in one language, it must can be said in another language. He also claims that translator should reproduce the closest natural equivalent from the source language message to the receptor language. Meaning has the priority than style. “Closest” means that the receptor language has the closest meaning as source language, and “natural” means the translation is translated naturally without strangeness. And “equivalent” combines these two concepts. Translator must aim at reproducing the message. And a good translation is longer than original. When the receptor has the same reactions as reader of source language, the functional equivalent translation strategy is effective. The Chinese translator used more word to word translation strategy than Taiwanese translator. His translation is sometimes even awkward for the receptor. However, Eugene A. Nida claims that overload of the translation should be avoided. Translator should avoid going behind the writer and also should avoid going ahead of the writer when the translator is trying to interpret his language. On the contrary, the Taiwanese translator used more functional equivalent translation strategy. Her translation is more natural and its meaning is more close to the original. Through the comparison I came to the conclusion that the Taiwanese translation is better than the Chinese translation.

Angus, Celine. "Traducteur au pays des merveilles: Une exploration de la traduction de L’écume des jours de Boris Vian." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/6018.

Full text
Abstract:
The two translations of the book, Froth on the Daydream (1967) (Mood Indigo) and Foam of the Daze (2003), are compared here in regards to particular elements of Vian’s writing. The first part examines in a general manner, the tendencies of the translators and the critique of the translated texts. The concentration of the second part is on the cultural references from the foreword and the first chapter as well as their translations. Three methods for creating neologisms (put forth by Jacques Bens) then serve as a starting point for the exploration of the “vianesque” language in the third part. By analysing Boris Vian’s writing in L’écume des jours as well as the methods of the translators, we are able to observe the stylistic effects that are produced by the three texts.
