In western translation theories, Lawrence Venuti and Eugene Nida appear to be standing at too opposing poles regarding the equivalence theory, and are notable for their prominent disagreement on the issue. Their theories diverge in their responses to equivalence, and disagree, essentially, on the functions of translation as well as the aspects of an acceptable translation. This disagreement unfolded itself clearly during a conference at Binghamton University in 1991. In this essay, I intend to juxtapose the exceptionally different theoretical approaches of these two prominent translation scholars. I also intend to show how Venuti’s views on translation in practice challenges Nida’s theoretical approaches to translation, and surprisingly enough his own theories particularly speaking, foreignizing and domesticating translations in which he has been extensively engaged. Finally I intend to show how Venuti’s practice of translation challenges his earlier attack on Nida’s conceptions of the “dynamic equivalence,” “naturalness of expression” (Nida 1964: 159) and the notion of “the equivalent effect” (de Waard & Nida 1986: 9).

Abstract:
The present research study is based on comparative analysis of two different translations done by two different writers of the same poem of Bulleh Shah, a renowned Sufi poet. Researcher selected the model of Eugene Nida’s principle of equivalent effect as the framework of this research article. Equivalent effect and feel is the vital element of the theory of translation presented by Eugene A Nida(1964). Nida (1964) claims that the analysis of the surface structure of the source text (ST) makes it easy to transfer the source language content and form into target language. Ju Miao (2000) mentions in his research article that before the publication of “toward a science of translating (1964) translation usually focused on literal translation or free translation. Researcher selected the translation of a poem which is written by Bulleh Shah and translated by two different writers one by Kartar Singh Duggal and other translation by Suman Kashyap. Researcher made a comparative analysis by using the Eugene Nida’s approach of translation theory which is based on principle of equivalent effect. The purpose of the study is to analyze that either these translations convey the content, form and feel of the original text or not in the perspective of Nida’s approach of translation. Findings are taken after making the comparison by keeping the principle of equivalent effect in mind. This research article will be helpful to understand the original effect and sense which is used by Bulleh Shah and will help to find out how much close these translations are with source text.

En este artículo se examinan los libros, conferencias y manuscritos del eminente traductólogo americano Eugene A. Nida, en los que habla de su trabajo de campo en más de 100 países para ayudar a traductores nativos a traducir la Biblia hacia sus propias lenguas. Esta tarea le llevó a estudiar unas 200 lenguas y culturas y a comprobar la profunda relación que existe entre la cultura y la lengua. Gracias a su investigación in situ, pudo elaborar su teoría de la equivalencia dinámica, que revolucionó el enfoque de la traducción. A pesar de que esta teoría fue generalmente aclamada, también recibió críticas. Aquí se pasa revista a algunas de ellas y a los comentarios de los autores que las han rebatido. También se mencionan los traductólogos españoles que introdujeron las ideas de Nida en España y que han ayudado a difundirlas.

L'article est basé sur les aperçus de Eugene Nida (1974) selon lesquels il existe une différence nette entre "équivalence dynamique" et "correspondance formelle" en matière de traduction. L'auteur de l'article, suivant Nida, préfère le dynamisme, mais il n'est pas d'accord avec lui (1976) que les expressions figées sont toujours à éviter. En hébreu, par exemple, ces expressions font partie d'une tradition culturelle riche qui comprend et la traduction de Thoreau et toute l'entreprise israélienne et sioniste qui visait à traduire la littérature du monde en hébreu pour faire entrer le nouvel Etat Juif dans la culture mondiale tout en maintenant son identité linguistique, religieuse et historique. Donc, le but de cette entreprise, comme le montre l'article, a toujours été la traduction non seulement de mots mais aussi de valeurs telles que celles de la tradition biblique et de l'expérience pionnière et sioniste (surtout représentée par A.D. Certainly since the groundbreaking work of Ferdinand de Saus-sure, the social character of language has been axiomatic for most linguists. Saussure writes: ‘The structure of a language is a social product of our language faculty. At the same time, it is also a body of necessary conventions adopted by society to enable members of society to use their language faculty.’ Eugene Nida and Johannes Louw, writing in the supplement to their New Testament lexicon, acknowledge the connection between their treatment of semantics and sociology, but they refrain from specifying what they think the relationship between language and society to be. Nida is somewhat more forthcoming in his study of componential analysis when he writes:There are analogies between the structure of a culture and the semantic structure of a corresponding language, but there is no set of one-to-one correspondences. A language must be free to describe a variety of possibilities, including those which have not as yet entered the culture. Nevertheless, the language does reflect in certain aspects of its semantic structure those aspects of the culture which for one reason or another have become salient in the lexical contrasts.

Este artículo estudia las marcas de catolicismo encontradas en la traducción de textos religiosos por el misionero jesuita José de Anchieta (1534-1597) en Brasil durante el siglo xvi. El estudio muestra cómo Anchieta empleó en sus traducciones términos del mundo espiritual de los Indios Tupi como «equivalentes» de terminos cristianos para evangelizar pero no buscó entender su significado profundo. Se establece un paralelismo entre la voluntad de Anchieta de mezclar términos cristianos con conceptos del mundo espiritual de los indios brasileños, y la «equivalencia dinámica» de Eugene Nida así como los conceptos de «naturalización» y «extranjerización» de Lawrence Venuti. Este artigo apresenta uma breve reflexão sobre a Tradução Automática (T.A) a partir de uma perspectiva histórica no contexto dos Estudos da Tradução. Esta análise consiste em explorar a relação entre o modelo de tradução tripartido de Eugene Nida (tradução humana) e a Abordagem Trifásica dos sistemas de tradução por máquina (tradução automática). Nesse sentido, apresentamos uma síntese da cronologia da Tradução Automática, relacionando-a à evolução da linguística no contexto das gramáticas formais. A partir dos resultados obtidos, propomos uma interpretação das influências e das afinidades observadas entre os processos de tradução humano e automático.

This research analyzes the drama, Peach Blooms Painted with Blood, as translated by Xu Yuanchong in light of Lawrence Venuti’s foreignization translation theory. The four elements influencing the foreignization translation method: purpose of the translator, type of text, poetics, and ideology are introduced, defined, analyzed, and illustrated in the translations by employing foreignization translation in linguistic, religious, and sociocultural contexts based on the five cultural contexts put forward by Eugene A. Nida. Following discussion of Nida’s contexts, the cases are analyzed through comparison and contrast of the connotations, implications, and situations existing between Chinese and Western cultures with the aim of enhancing the understanding of classical Chinese poetry and prose, thus enabling translators to interpret and advance Chinese classical works in a more effective way.

Artikel ini membahas tentang sejarah penerjemahan Bibel dari bahasa Yunani ke dalam bahasa Arab. Penerjemahan sendiri merupakan usaha dalam menyebarkan Firman Tuhan kepada seluruh dunia dan memudahkan penerjemahan teks-teks suci tersebut. Salah satu hal menonjol dalam penerjemahan ini adalah bentuk ekspresi Tuhan. Ekspresi Tuhan menggunakan leksikon ‘Allãh’ yang mana leksikon tersebut sering dipahami sebagai leksikon terbatas untuk penyebutan Tuhan dalam agama Islam. Pembahasan ini akan menggunakan teori penerjemahan dari Eugene Nida terkait kaidah penerjemahan secara umum. Adapun teori penerjemahan Bibel menggunakan teori yang digagas oleh Glen G Scorgie, Mark L Strauss, dan Steven M Voth terkait tantangan dalam mengkomunikasikan bahasa Tuhan ke dalam bahasa manusia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa gerakan penerjemahan ini sudah dilakukan sejak zaman Umayyah dan diperbaharui kembali di zaman modern oleh para Misionaris. Abstract:
The paper reflects on the specificity of the translation of texts belonging to the religious and theolog- ical literature. Religious and theological texts have been translated for millennia, many of them — originating in the sphere of Judeo-Christianity — lie at the core of Western culture. Their trans- lation, especially the translation of the Bible, was accompanied by theoretical reflection (see, for example, Jerome of Stridonium, Martin Luther or Eugene Nida), which permanently influenced the way of thinking about translation in general. The present study answers the question of how the translation of religious and theological texts differs from the translation of other texts and what the translator must or should take into account, translating religious and theological texts. The paper discusses, among others, the role of the word in Christianity, spiritual preparation, openness to the Holy Spirit, tradition and inculturation.

Taking domestication and foreignization as the research object, this paper is meant to explore the applications of domestication and foreignization in English and Chinese film titles. Firstly, it probes into the main factors that have influence on the translation of film titles, namely ways of thinking, aesthetic concepts, business values and translators’ understandings of the cultural background of the source language. Secondly, by introducing translators like Venuti, Fu Lei, Qian Zhongshu and Eugene Nida, the paper demonstrates domestication and foreignization, and then discusses them in the film titles. Finally, the paper elaborates the reasons and examples behind domestication and foreignization and a combination of the two. According to the study, the usage of domestication or foreignization is closely connected with the linguistic characteristics and cultural background of English and Chinese. Besides, these two translation strategies reinforce each other and are closely interwoven.

Denotation – Humour – TabooThis analysis takes as its subject jokes about Poles that appeared in two US-American sitcoms: The Big Bang Theory (Teoria wielkiego podrywu) and 2 Broke Girls (Dwie spłukane dziewczyny), as well as their official Polish TV translations made for Comedy Central Polska channel. The selected examples refer to Polish traditions, history, and stereotypes about Polish people. They were divided into three categories according to their subject: a joke based on a stereotype, jokes making Poles look exotic, and jokes referring to Polish-Jewish relations, and the history of World War II. The aim here is accordingly: to characterize the original jokes, to analyze their official Polish voice-over translation, and to consider the potential differences in the reception of given fragments by the sourceculture and target-culture viewers. This paper refers to the characteristics of sitcom as a text genre and Eugene A. Nida and Charlesa R. Taber’s theory of functional equivalence.

<p>Este artigo propõe uma discussão sobre as implicações semióticas inseridas em cada escolha e tomada de decisão tradutória. O autor busca enfatizar que em qualquer tradução há a necessidade de se compreender as combinações das palavras nos textos e não o significado isolado de cada uma delas. São apresentadas também as especificidades dos significados icônicos, indexados e convencionais, bem como a importância dos signos não verbais no processo comunicativo entre duas ou mais comunidades lingüísticas. Os cinco sentidos também são tidos como os meios pelos quais adquirimos todo e qualquer conhecimento. Por meio de exemplos práticos, Eugene Nida ainda nos informa que muitos símbolos semióticos alteram radicalmente suas funções e suas formas, conforme as mudanças ocorridas na própria sociedade. Finalmente, dois filtros comunicativos (o estado emocional dos receptores e as pressuposições da cultura) são apontados como fatores determinantes para a compreensão de um texto e sua posterior tradução.</p>

In particular, attention is drawn to the risk that a single word or concept can take on different meanings in each of the institutional or cultural contexts comprising the European Union, and to the need to make sure that Europe’s words mean the same thing for any European citizen. Against this backdrop, the creation of EU-specific terminology is seen as an inherent step in the formation of new institutional or political concepts related to the activities or the practices of the European Union. Some examples of translation discrepancies are presented, along with their differing impact on the effectiveness of the legal or political message and the differing quality standards they seem to require in order to ensure interlingual consistency.

When analyzing a historical source, a historian works also as a translator and often, unaware of this, changes the meaning of the original information, that will eventually reshape the results of his final results [?]. History as a science does not use the language separated from the original terms for example concerning institutions, laws, religions, therefore the risk of mistake in the process of decoding the source is serious, as emphasized by Marc Bloch. The functionalist approach in translation, presented by German scholars Christiane Nord and Hans J. Vermeer and the theory of equivalence by Eugene Nida, prove helpful in the historical analysis of Spanish 16th-century military treatise Discurso sobre la forma de reducir la disciplina militar a mejor y antiguo estado. Using the military charges and early modern military law as examples, we can see how translation studies can improve the fidelity of historical analysis of sources.

Museums play an important role in China’s communication with the world and demonstrate to some extent China’s soft power. As China further strengthens its international exchanges, more and more people hope to know China through its history and culture. However, due to the lingual and cultural distinctions, there are many unavoidable problems in translating Chinese relic texts (Source Text or ST) into English texts (Target Text or TT). As Eugene Nida said in his functional equivalence theory, the Target Reader’s (TR) comprehension and appreciation of the translation is significant. Therefore, in translating relic texts, attention should be paid to how the TR can understand and accept the content. This thesis aims at finding proper translation principles and methods by analyzing the translations of the relic texts in Hubei Provincial Museum from the perspective of the core concepts of functional equivalence theory. Through a study on the functional equivalence theory, the thesis finds three principles of translating relic texts: accuracy, readability and acceptability. An analysis of the relic texts of Hubei Provincial Museum has led to several translation methods including addition, omission, paraphrasing and rewriting, which help to achieve the functional equivalence of relic texts translation.

Based on a review of the literature on ethnography produced by translation scholars over the past twenty years, this contribution explores how translation studies [TS] has appropriat­ed this concept, first as a way to solve translation problems (with Eugene Nida), then as an object (within the cultural turn) and more recently as a research methodology to document and analyze translation and interpreting events in context. The author shows how, in the early seventies, both cultural anthropology and TS saw a change in paradigm that brought the two disciplines closer at the surface level (as the metaphor of culture as a text gained grounds), but that draw them very much apart from an epistemological viewpoint. Indeed, while ethnography was undertaking an interpretive turn, TS chose to define itself as an em­pirical discipline based on systematic and objective observation; this positivistic bias in early TS could partly explain its late adoption of ethnography as a research methodology. This liter­ary review finally reminds us of the many dichotomies out of which TS has grown and struc­tured itself — text vs context; translation vs. interpretation; experiential vs. scientific know­ledge, hermeneutics vs. empiricism, to name but a few — and suggest the need for an inter­pretive move within the discipline.

The untranslatable and the implicit often represent the two limits of translation - the untranslatable by what can be expressed in only one language, and the implicit by what is not expressed in one language. Phenomena in a constant margin, phenomena in a liminary position (see Jacques Derrida), they overlap several territories, ranging from cultural to linguistic. Between the "nothing is translatable" and the "everything is translatable" delimited by Susan Apter, and the possible or impossible equivalences of Eugene Nida, these two notions are always troublesome, or at least, in motion. Indeed, the definitions themselves are sometimes blurred. What is untranslatable? Does "intraductible" mean inexplicable, unpredictable or incomprehensible? And how can we determine the implicit, since it is, above all, an absence, a meaning that lies beyond or below the text? However, despite this apparent absence, the transfer of the unsaid can be translated, but often by other linguistic means than those used in the source language. Since languages (in this context French and Danish) are not isomorphic, translation remains intimately linked to this reality. The task of the translator is to know how to transmit the combination of the implicit and the explicit, but also to try to explain what at first sight seems untranslatable in order to respect the (implicit) intention of the discourse of the language source.

L’auteur d’une œuvre littéraire est influencé par son expérience de la vie, sa culture, son imagination, sa société, l’idéologie de son peuple, etc. Une œuvre littéraire, fortement imprégnée de nuances culturelles, est toujours en opposition avec la langue du récepteur. Les romans yorubas de Daniel Olorunfemi Fagunwa en sont un bon exemple. Pour amener le lecteur de la version française à réagir au message du texte original de manière identique ou pratiquement identique, Olaoye Abioye, le traducteur de ces romans, confère une valeur secondaire au style de Fagunwa. Par cette approche, l’équivalence dynamique, une idée avancée par le traducteur de la bible, Eugene Nida, est inconsciemment mise en jeu. La compréhension du lecteur récepteur lui est imposée dans le cadre de son contexte culturel pour éviter toute trahison ou contre-sens dans les versions françaises. Dans cet article, nous abordons la dichotomie entre l’imposition et la trahison en traduction, l’imposition et la trahison dans l’optique de l’équivalence dynamique et l’imposition ou la trahison dans la traduction française de deux romans de Fagunwa. Il conclut que l’imposition est une exigence en traduction littéraire.

The Functional Equivalence Theory put forward by Eugene Nida, an American translation theorist, notes that translation is a process of using the closest and most natural equivalent in the target language to reproduce the information of the source language. It emphasizes the equivalence of information content and form, and prose translation aims to convey information and reproduce the style of the source text. Therefore, the Functional Equivalence Theory has great application space in the text analysis of prose translation. In this paper, the author discusses how to apply the theory of Functional Equivalence to the translating of modern Chinese lyric prose into English. Taking Autumn in Peiping translated by Zhang Peiji as a case study, the author of this paper explores how the translator achieved equivalence in lexical, syntactical and stylistic aspects on the ground of citing typical examples. The method of qualitative research is used in this paper. In the framework of the Functional Equivalence Theory, the author tries to analyze and evaluate how word choice, sentence structure and style function in conveying the meaning of the source text. It is found that the theory of Functional Equivalence is of guidance in analyzing the translation effect of Autumn in Peiping. Lexically, equivalence is realized through correspondence, non-correspondence and zero in semantic translation. Syntactically, the translator used different sentence structures and cohesive devices to convey the intended meaning. Stylistically, some workable strategies are adopted to deal with translation difficulties in expressive function and aesthetic appeal.

I was first made aware of the crucial cultural factor in Bible translation during a three-week TAPOT workshop led by Eugene Nida at Makerere University (Kampala, Uganda) in 1969. After benefitting then from five years of apprenticeship training under another one of the old masters, Jacob A. Loewen, my official United Bible Societies consultancy work in Zambia began on June 23, 1977. Ten years later I felt confident enough to put down some of my thoughts on the subject of The Cultural Factor in Bible Translation in the UBS Monograph (#2) title of that name. However, that book had a very narrow theoretical and contextual focus; it certainly did not deal with everything that needed to be said about “the cultural factor” as it relates to the production of a given Bible translation in a specific language and social setting. Older now, and hopefully somewhat wiser, in the present paper I revisit this topic from a much broader point of view. I therefore briefly explore the importance of the cultural factor when producing—that is, planning, organizing and managing, training staff for, composing, supplementing, evaluating and revising, publishing (in the wider sense), and promoting—a translation of the Scriptures today. It will be possible only to touch upon each of these essential aspects of the overall process in this article, which is further biased by my limited ethnic and experiential background. But I hope to raise some relevant issues and stimulate discussion by colleagues who work in a much different cultural environment within the translation fellowship.

Summary Growing interest in Spanish-speaking countries in Lithuania leads to the increased number of translations of Spanish and Latin American literature. Therefore, it is important to analyse translations from Spanish into Lithuanian and vice versa to improve the quality of translation work. One of the most difficult elements to translate are culture-specific items that reveal cultural uniqueness. The novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez contains many culture-specific items related to Colombia, that could be difficult to translate. This article aims to analyse and compare translation strategies of culture-specific items from Spanish into Lithuanian, which were used in 1972 by Elena Treinienė and in 2017 by Valdas V. Petrauskas, to translate the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. Firstly, this article defines the concepts of cultural elements and culture-specific items. It also discusses the classification of culture-specific items based on the works of Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark, Sergej Vlahov, Sider Florin and Laura Santamaria Guinot. Furthermore, this article describes translation strategies of culture-specific items emphasized by Amparo Hurtado Albir, Eirlys Davies, Georges L. Bastin and Pekka Kujamäki. In this research, culture-specific items are counted and described using Santamaria Guinot’s classification, which allows to claim that there are 69 different culture-specific items in “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and they are reflected by 252 examples in the text. These culture-specific items are related with concepts of ecology, social structures, cultural institutions, social universe and material culture. The most common ones are culture-specific items from the category of ‘material culture’. The results of the research allow distinguishing six translation strategies, used in different frequency: transcription, equivalence of situations, actualisation, usage of exoticism, extension and explication, and omission. Both Lithuanian translators Treinienė and Petrauskas mainly used strategies of transcription and equivalence of situations. The analysis of the translation of culture-specific items was performed using the methods of quantitative, comparative, and descriptive translation analysis.

On a décrit Alice au pays des merveilles comme "le conte, le plus inépuisable jamais conté". Cependant de nombreuses traductions en d'autres langues, dont l'espagnol, n'ont pas été entièrement acceptées par les cultures "cible". Le présent article étudie les problèmes spatiaux-temporels qui surgissent au cours de la traduction d'Alice. Il s'agit de démontrer que l'histoire de Carroll pose aux possibles traducteurs, de telles difficultés qu'ils seraient incapables d'éviter la perte de certaines unités d'information, bien qu'ils connaissent les langues et les cultures "sources et cibles". C'est la raison pour laquelle l'auteur étudie trois traductions en espagnol d' Alice au pays des merveilles, en les comparant avec l'original anglais. Les difficultés que les traducteurs doivent vaincre, sont au nombre de trois selon la terminologie formulée par Jakobson: interlinguales, intralinguales, et intersémiotiques. Les premières se manifestent en traduisant un conte du dix-neuvième siècle à notre monde actuel; les deuxièmes surgissent en voulant faire part aux lecteurs espagnols d'une histoire typiquement anglaise; finalement les troisièmes sont inévitables losqu'on traduit non seulement des textes écrits mais encore des textes picturaux. Cet article se centre fondamentalment sur la traduction interlinguale, où est notoire la brèche qui sépare les cultures, anglaise et espagnole. Néanmoins, et comme la culture n'est pas une entité homogène, l'analyse de cette brèche nous oblige à recourir aux cinq types de cultures décrits par Eugène Nida: culture matérielle; culture religieuse; culture sociale; culture linguistique; culture écologique. La division de Nida sert de cadre pouvant recueillir les différences entre Alice in Wonderland et les trois traductions en espagnol faisant  object de cet article.

W 2017 roku Papież Franciszek powołał komisję do zbadania dalszej przydatności Instrukcji Liturgiam Authenticam, zatwierdzonej przez Jana Pawła II, a dotyczącej zasad tłumaczenia tekstów liturgicznych. Niniejszy artykuł wskazuje genezę tego wydarzenia niekoniecznie oznaczającego kolejny etap „dewojtylizacji” Kościoła, jak chcą konserwatywni komentatorzy watykańscy. Głównym powodem powołania tej komisji są kontrowersje związane z dwoma przekładami w języku angielskim – oficjalnym, zatwierdzonym w roku 2010 i utrzymanym w duchu Liturgiam Authenticam, oraz wcześniejszym, z roku 1998, dokonanym zgodnie z zasadami Instrukcji Pawła VI z roku 1969 zalecającej w istocie stosowanie w tłumaczeniu Biblii tzw. ekwiwalencji dynamicznej, w praktyce zaś współczesnego języka potocznego. Dla zrozumienia istoty sporu autor niniejszego artykułu przedstawia koncepcję ekwiwalencji dynamicznej pastora Eugene’a Nidy, wskazując jej mocne i słabe strony. Wśród tych pierwszych głównie fakt, że w latach wokółsoborowych była to pierwsza poważna, naukowa teoria przekładu. Koncepcji tej nie brak również słabych stron, widocznych na tle znaczącego rozwoju teorii przekładu w ciągu ostatnich 60 lat. Najpoważniejszą z nich jest fakt, że sprowadza ona akt przekładu do już istniejących zasobów języka docelowego, hamując tym samym jego rozwój. Jest to więc koncepcja odwrotna co do istoty wobec metody św. Hieronima, przyjmowanej w tradycji katolickiej. Według autora Instrukcja Liturgiam Authencticam bierze pod uwagę kilka dziesięcioleci praktyki przekładu biblijnego w duchu posoborowym, z jej sukcesami i porażkami. Konkluzje płynące z tej analizy są następujące: Absolutyzacja ekwiwalencji dynamicznej, jako „jedynej naukowej teorii przekładu”, świadczy o braku współpracy środowisk biblijnych z środowiskami rozwijającymi współczesne teorie przekładu. Instrukcja Liturgiam Authenticam skupia się na tym, co zapobiega procesowi desakralizacji liturgii – widocznemu w wielu Kościołach protestanckich, ale też w wielu posoborowych środowiskach katolickich.

Esto no es sino muestra del interés que tiene la investigación en artes escénicas a nivel global.Iniciamos este número 15 con un texto escrito por el antropólogo Rodrigo Parrini, en colaboración con Daniel González Marín y Alfadir Luna, quienes reflexionan sobre los objetos de archivo utilizados por la compañía Teatro Línea de Sombras para producir la puesta en escena Baños Roma. Le sigue un texto de la investigadora chilena Javiera Larraín, sobre la obra Neva, del dramaturgo y director Guillermo Calderón. Este creador pertenece a lo que Larraín identifica como la nueva generación de la escena nacional chilena, con trascendencia internacional.Por otro lado, Ximena Gómez Goyzueta, de la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes, hace una reflexión sobre teatralidad y metateatro en el texto dramático del teatro español barroco. Asimismo, Nidia Vincent, de la Facultad de Letras Españolas de la Universidad Veracruzana, comparte su análisis sobre una coreografía que realizó el creador español Antonio Gades con base en Bodas de sangre, de Federico García Lorca. El prólogo funciona como una obra cómica breve que se vale de personajes de la Comedia del Arte para ofrecer claves de la situación política, histórica y social que se vivía en el momento que fue escrita.En la sección “Testimonio” incluimos el texto de Carlos Albarrán, estudiante de la Maestría en Artes Escénicas de la Universidad Veracruzana, quien nos relata su experiencia en el taller que el Workcenter de Jerzy Grotowski y Thomas Richards ofreció en la Ciudad de México el año pasado, siendo la primera visita a México que realiza este legendario Centro de trabajo fundado por Grotowski en Pontedera, Italia. Ahora, en 2019, se conmemoran 20 años del fallecimiento de Jerzy Grotowski (1933-1999), por lo que la revista Investigación Teatral se une con este testimonio a los actos que se realizan alrededor del mundo para reconocer que el legado del maestro polaco sigue vivo.Continuamos con un grupo de cinco reseñas que abordan puestas en escena y novedades editoriales de gran interés. Cierra el volumen la semblanza-homenaje que el maestro Francisco Beverido hace del actor y promotor Arturo Meseguer, fallecido prematuramente cuando se desempeñaba como director general de Difusión Cultural de la Universidad Veracruzana. Abstract:
This paper examines titles, as metatexts, from a linguistic aspect. The title is an integral part of a text, especially of a literary piece. More particularly, it focuses on translation strategies and how they are applied by translators in the context of translating titles of American novels to Hungarian. This study differentiates five groups of translation strategies based on notable linguists’ works, such as Kinga Klaudy and Eugene Nida, supplementing them with an original one, and specifying them with several subgroups. The main categories are the following: Direct Translation, Specification, Generalization, Omission, and Total Transformation. Each category is introduced with specific examples. Based on the collected material, this paper argues that when translating titles of American novels to Hungarian, priority is attributed to the source language text as faithfully as possible, not only in its content but also in its form.
