In 1935, as the Nazis’ state-of-the art eugenics exhibition from the Deutsches Hygiene Museum was concluding its American tour, a decision had to be made about whether to return the displays to Germany or to house them in an American museum. After the American Academy of Medicine decided against the display because of its political implications, the director of the Buffalo Museum of Science, Carlos Cummings, himself a physician, offered his institution as the exhibition's permanent home. “What is the astounding eugenics program upon which Chancellor Hitler has launched the German people?” Cummings wondered aloud. “As a matter of public interest, without endorsement,” he added, “the Museum will display in the Central Hall throughout this final quarter of 1935, a set of fifty-one posters and charts . . . which gives Americans a graphic explanation of Germany's campaign to rear in posterity ‘a new race nobility.’” Seven years later, with war raging, the museum received permission from the company that had insured the exhibition, to dismantle it from its permanent home in the museum's Hall of Heredity. An exhibition about eugenics, Nazi eugenics no less, that had been enthusiastically received as it had traveled the United States in the mid-1930s, had seemingly fallen victim to the war against eugenics launched by cultural anthropologists and geneticists. In light of the broad scholarship on eugenics, this certainly would be a plausible reading of the deinstallation of the Nazi eugenics exhibition. But the three books under review here suggest a more complex reading, one that suggests that eugenics and racism, considered as ideological systems, were less easily dislodged from American culture than from Buffalo's Museum of Science.

He argues that both Habermas and Zhuangzi would view liberal eugenics as falling on the wrong side of the natural/artificial divide. It is debatable whether his interpretation of Zhuangzi as both fatalist and epistemically modest suits this conclusion. In particular, it is doubtful that someone who is suspicious of whether humans can ever have knowledge of nature would be entitled to assert that liberal eugenics is unnatural. Even if this position is possible, it would be one that equally rejects Habermas. Habermas attempts to isolate genetic engineering from acceptable interventions in a person’s life. Daoism, to the extent that it rejects liberal eugenics, would equally view the latter kinds of interventions as misguided. Regeneration processes associated with gap-building-phase sites are described for the tropical montane cloud forest of the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Twelve gap-building-phase sites c. 20 y old were selected within the forest according to their gap size and severity of disturbance (i.e. number of fallen logs). All flowering plants were recorded within the sites and specimens were identified to species level. Species were related to genera geographical affinity and growth form. Abundance, individual height and aerial crown cover were also recorded for all species. The composition for these sites was 121 vascular plant species grouped in 96 genera and 60 families. Results suggest that the advanced regeneration of shrub and tree species of the medium canopy, such as Eugenia capuli, Ternstroemia sylvatica, Turpinia occidentalis, Meliosma oaxacana, Myrsine coriacea and Podocarpus reichei, was favoured by the disturbance regime prevailing in this forest community. All of these woody species belong to tropical genera and are structurally dominant in the gap-building-phase sites. A differential response of the vegetation was obtained in these sites as a function of the severity of disturbance and gap size. This response was revealed by the dominance-diversity relationships. Small gaps (45–95 m2) or gaps created by two treefalls showed a higher diversity and density compared to larger gaps (95–150 m2) or those created by four fallen logs, which had a lower species diversity and significantly lower tree and vine densities. These results imply that gap size and the severity of disturbance have a significant effect on the regeneration of these disturbed sites.

This is the first study of milk composition in any member of the wallaby genus Thylogale. Milk samples (n = 44) were collected after oxytocin injection from 12 females carrying pouch young aged 2–30 weeks followed by sampling of the mothers until weaning by Week 39. The lactation period could be partitioned into early (Weeks 2–20), mid (Weeks 21–30) and late (>30 weeks) stages. Although milk concentrations changed little during lactation the energy content increased almost 4-fold from 540 ± 39 kJ (100 mL)–1 (mean ± s.e.) to 1908 ± 102 kJ (100 mL)–1. Carbohydrate concentrations decreased from 13.3 ± 0.1 g (100 mL)–1 (early lactation) to 10.9 ± 0.9 g (100 mL)–1 in mid-lactation, falling to 4.8 ± 0.9 g (100 mL)–1 in late lactation. Lipid increased from 6.3 ± 1.1 g (100 mL)–1 to 12.5 ± 4.1 g (100 mL)–1, reaching 31.4 ± 5.0 g (100 mL)–1 in late lactation. Protein increased from 3.3 ± 0.1 g (100 mL)–1 to 9.7 ± 1.6 g (100 mL)–1 in mid-lactation to 14.0 ± 1.5 g (100 mL)–1 in late lactation. This relatively high level of lipid and protein in late lactation may be the cause of the more rapid growth and, hence, shorter pouch life of the Tasmanian pademelon (Thylogale billardierii) compared with the well studied tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii).

La gangrena de Fournier es considerada como una fascitis necrotizante polimicrobiana e idiopática que afecta a zonas perineal, genital y perianal, presenta una alta morbimortalidad por la rápida evolución del proceso. Objetivo: Evidenciar tratamiento farmacológico y quirúrgico, así como microorganismos encontrados en casos de pacientes con gangrena de Fournier del Hospital de Especialidades Eugenio Espejo. Material y Métodos: Estudio observacional retrospectivo. Se analizaron 7 casos de individuos entre los años 2019-2020, de los cuales se excluyeron 3 casos. Asimismo, se valoró información sobre datos clínicos, epidemiológicos y tratamiento. Resultados: De los 7 casos estudiados, el 100% fueron de sexo masculino, la edad media fue de 56 años, 5 del total de casos con antecedentes patológicos personales presentaron hipertensión arterial e hiperplasia prostática benigna. El tiempo promedio para intervención quirúrgica fue de 21.5 horas. El total de los pacientes fueron tratados con limpieza quirúrgica y antibioticoterapia de amplio espectro, y todos requirieron reintervención quirúrgica. Ninguno de los pacientes presentó complicaciones quirúrgicas, ningún paciente falleció hasta 18 meses después del seguimiento. Discusión: El propósito del tratamiento es la reducción de la toxicidad sistémica, eliminar los microorganismos causantes y controlar la progresión de la infección junto con la extirpación de tejido necrótico. Conclusión: Es imprescindible la instauración de un diagnóstico, así como un tratamiento antibiótico y quirúrgico oportunos, ya que esta patología se considera de progresión inmediata, con una alta tasa de mortalidad y secuelas severas.

Forest litterfall is plant materials that have been fallen to the ground. It is vital in the process of nutrient forests. The vegetation of the stations in Mount Kasunogan consisted of 7 plant species from 7 different families; Tamanu (Calophyllum) from Calophyllaceae, Sweet flag (Calamus Sp) from Acoraceae, Pitanga (Eugenia Sp) from Myrtaceae, Cogon Grass (Imperatacylindrica) from Poaceae, Hickory Wattle (Mangium) from Fabaceae, Nutrush (ScleriaScrobiculata) from Cyperaceae, Screw pine (Pandanus Odoratissimus) from Pandanaceae, and Ivory Mahogany (DysoxylumSp) from Meliaceae. The researchers investigated litterfall production and decomposition rate and correlated these two essential processes to the soil physical and chemical composition of Mount Kasunogan. Organic matter, Soil pH level, and Soil Moisture have a significant influence on litter production and what factors could increase or decrease its production. It has been denoted that all soil attributes (Organic matter, Soil pH level, and Soil Moisture) impact forest litterfall production. However, two of the attributes, which are the organic matter and soil moisture, barely contribute to the litterfall. In contrast, the soil pH is perfectly correlated and has a significant effect on litterfall production. Station three’s advantage regarding the soil pH and wind presence due to its high elevation explains a large amount of litter production in the area. In this study, it is also concluded that the acidic the soil gets, the faster the decomposition, which also resulted in the faster decomposition in station 2 among the rest of the sites in Mount Kasunogan.

En esta oportunidad presentamos el segundo número del volumen 14, correspondiente al año 2021. Este número es significativo, ya que coincide con el inicio de un ciclo de actividades que van a ser desarrolladas en el marco del 80 aniversario de creación del Museo de Antropología y del décimo aniversario de la creación del Instituto de Antropología de Córdoba. El Museo tuvo su origen como una de las partes que componían el Instituto de Arqueología, Lingüística y Folklore de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Una historia más detallada del devenir de esta institución puede encontrarse en la editorial del primer número de la Revista del Museo Antropología publicada en el año 2008 (https://doi.org/10.31048/1852.4826.v1.n0.5389). Desde ese año la Revista del Museo de Antropología ha sido testigo y relator de muchas actividades y acontecimientos que fortalecieron la implementación de antropologías situadas en Córdoba. Particularmente la implementación de la carrera del Doctorado en Ciencias Antropológicas, en el año 2009, y la carrera de grado de la licenciatura en Antropología de la Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades, en el año 2010. Por otro lado en 2011 se crea por resolución conjunta de CONICET y la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba el Instituto de Antropología de Córdoba, Unidad Ejecutora de doble dependencia CONICET y Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Sin embargo es en 2012, con la designación de su primer director, que este instituto comienza a funcionar formalmente. Entonces, el volumen 14 se convierte en el testigo del proceso de festejo de los 80 años de la institución madre y de los primeros diez años del actual Instituto de Antropología de Córdoba a festejarse en el año 2022. Pasando al contenido de este número, en esta ocasión presentamos dieciocho contribuciones. Algunas de ellas originales, otras corresponden a comentarios, traducciones y una reseña bibliográfica. En este número encontramos representados trabajos de las secciones de Arqueología, Museología y Antropología Social. La primera sección corresponde a Arqueología y está representada por un dosier denominado “Tras la interpretación en arqueologías argentinas”. Este dosier fue editado por Andrés Laguens y acompañado por la editora de la sección arqueología, Roxana Cattáneo. Este dosier comienza con una introducción de Andrés Laguens y continúa con el trabajo de Andrés Jakel, quién presenta y discute el concepto de paisaje desde una mirada basada en la noción de taskscape de Tim Ingold. Esto es aplicado en estudios arqueológicos del Valle Calchaquí Norte. A continuación se presenta el trabajo de Daniela Saghessi referido el análisis de categorías arqueobotánicas a la luz de corrientes teóricas contemporáneas y que permitan explicar el uso de plantas por grupos cazadores recolectores de norpatagonia. Raúl González Dubox, en su trabajo, intenta analizar la agencia y ontología mediante la interpretación del arte rupestre patagónico. Más específicamente centrándose en las manifestaciones rupestres de la localidad arqueológica La María, ubicada en la provincia de Santa Cruz. Axel Weissel, presenta su trabajo focalizado en las intervenciones antrópicas desarrolladas en un área de explotación petrolífera de la provincia de Neuquén. Continúa el trabajo de María Laura Bastourre quién intenta abordar la relación humanos animales llevada a cabo por sociedades prehispánicas del Paraná medio e inferior. Rocío Torino, por su parte, aborda el estudio de la cerámica guaraní mediante el análisis de una muestra depositada en los Museos de La Plata y Etnográfico de Buenos Aires. Marco Álvarez propone analizar los suelos y estratos como cosas. Para ello utiliza como ejemplo el análisis de la secuencia sedimentaria del sitio Cárcava Paso del Hervidero. Por último cierra este dosier el epílogo escrito por Benjamín Alberti. En la sección dedicada a trabajos originales relacionados con cuestiones museológicas, patrimoniales y de arqueología pública, María Eugenia Conforti y colegas presentan un trabajo centrado en el análisis sobre las valoraciones del público visitante de una exhibición relacionada con la historia minera local de la ciudad de Olavarría. La Sección de Antropología Social cierra este número con una serie de artículos varios entre los que se encuentran algunos originales, traducciones y una reseña de libro. El primer trabajo de la sección corresponde al de Lucía Caisso que presenta un análisis sobre la dimensión educativa de las prácticas de militancia enmarcada en una investigación antropológica sobre experiencias educativas en movimientos sociales situado en la ciudad de Córdoba. Por su parte Florencia Daniela Pacífico analiza, a partir de una investigación etnográfica en conjunto con integrantes de cooperativas pertenecientes al Movimiento Evita, el rol de estas organizaciones frente al estado. Esto lo hace a través de conceptos como autonomía o dependencia así como aporta al debate sobre clientelismo. Por otro lado Romina Cravero presenta su trabajo relacionado con la agroecología centrándose en experiencias de la vida y trabajo rural en establecimientos ubicados en la región pampeana de la provincia de Córdoba. A continuación Gustavo Sorá nos introduce al trabajo reciente de la joven colega Sol Anahí Vignolo. Sol fue una de las egresadas de la primera cohorte de la Licenciatura en Antropología de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba y se encontraba trabajando en su tesis doctoral cuándo volviendo de trabajo de campo fue embestida con una inaudita violencia por un automóvil conducido por un conductor en estado de embriaguez. Producto de esto Sol falleció. En ese momento uno de los trabajos ya se encontraba aprobado para su publicación en esta revista y dadas las circunstancias se decidió publicar otro que estaba ya finalizado a modo de homenaje a nuestra colega. En el primero de ellos se presenta una reflexión sobre la potencialidad de la antropología para estudiar la relación entre literatura y política. Se propone realizar esto a través de una investigación etnográfica realizada en el Partido Obrero de Córdoba. En el segundo trabajo realiza un ensayo reflexivo sobre la génesis y el desarrollo de sus experiencias etnográficas como militante del Partido Obrero. A continuación tenemos una traducción del artículo “Doxa y creencia entre los antropólogos” de Lygia Sigaud. Por último y cerrando este número Cecilia Argañaraz nos presenta una reseña sobre el libro “Aun aprendo: cuatro experimentos de filología retrospectiva” de Carlo Ginzburg. Nuevamente presentamos una variedad de temáticas y aproximaciones que ofrecen una vista sobre algunas de las temáticas vigentes en la antropología argentina actual. Con y ello, y como es costumbre en este espacio agradecemos a autores y autoras de los artículos y particularmente a las y los revisores que nos ayudan a mantener la calidad del contenido que publicamos. Esperando que este segundo año de pandemia COVID-19 nos permita tener mejores condiciones para el desarrollo personal y profesional nos despedimos hasta el próximo número, invitando a leer el contenido que hemos introducido aquí.

Modernist music represents idiocy in its tendency toward simplification in all domains; its static, nondevelopmental character; its deliberate cultivation of disfluency and inarticulateness; its interest in generic incongruity; its pleasure in low humor; and above all its deep interest in the childlike, the folk, and the primitive (including the racial primitive). As in modernist literature, musical representations of idiocy enable the sorts of compositional innovations that are widely understood as defining musical modernism.

The goal of eugenic fitness was intended, at its most utopian, to improve lives, to help eradicate disease and disability, and to foster productivity. In practice, however, eugenics mostly reinforced rather than dissolved existing class prejudices. ‘The inequalities of eugenics’ shows that it was frequently the poor, ill-educated, and minorities whose reproductive capacity and lifestyle came under attack, and it was women’s sexuality rather than men’s that was closely policed. The disparity between falling birthrates in the developed world and rising rates elsewhere also created racial inequalities in eugenic policies. Reproductive fitness was being undermined as those considered unfit outbred their superiors. Class, gender, and race differences were thus all central eugenic concerns.

The main action of the novel Laurus by E.G. Vodolazkin is set in Russia (Rus’) of the 15th century, and full of quotes and retelling of plots and fragments of a large number of translated medieval works that existed in the Russian Middle Ages. The central place among them belongs to a narration (a novel) about Alexander the Great — its manuscript is kept under the icon as the Holy Scripture. The article examines the juxtaposition of situations and problems of the main characters of Vodolazkin’s novel and situations and the personality of Alexander whose image permeates the text of the modern novel accompanying the worldview searches of its heroes. Young Arseny is impressed by the renowned commander primarily because he is a tireless explorer of lands — countries, peoples, bizarre creatures and phenomena of those lands. Later Arseny (who becomes Amvrosy and Laurus on his way) comprehends the category of the path in connection with Alexander, namely the path of salvation for the soul of Ustina. The prediction of Alexander’s tragic death — “on the iron earth under the bone sky” — is projected by the heroine, Ustina, onto her own fate, but there is no fatal inevitability in the prediction: its retelling does not prevent another heroine, Anastasia, from giving a birth to a child successfully. At the end of the novel there appears a question: “What a strange life Alexander had. What was its historical purpose?” The question is asked by Anastasia who is falling asleep, and Laurus answers it himself: “Life has no historical purpose. Or it’s not primary. It seems to me that Alexander realized this only right before his death.” Actually it’s the hero of Vodolazkin’s novel who understands this instead of Alexander before his imminent death. Having conquered the world Alexander died before reaching his home land in accordance with the prediction of Antiphon. Laurus who is saving the soul of his beloved, returns to his home place and dies with a newborn baby in his arms, thereby compensating for the loss that shook him and Ustina at the beginning of life.
