Abstract:
The feeding biology of three euphausiid species, Euphausia vallentini (adults and juveniles), E. longirostris and Nematoscelis megalops was investigated during austral autumn (April/May) of 1998 and 1999, in the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands (Southern Ocean). Data on the abundance and biomass of these species, estimated from bongo net tows, were investigated. Trophic position was assessed using gut contents and stable nitrogen isotope measurements. Feeding rate and daily carbon ration were estimated using the gut fluorescence and the gut fullness techniques. Vertical migrations into th

The trophodynamics of the numerically dominant euphausiid species within a region of high mesoscale oceanographic variability in the southwest Indian sector of the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) were investigated during the austral autumns April/May) of 2004 and 2005. During the 2004 survey, sub-surface (200 m) temperature profiles indicated that an intense frontal feature, formed by the convergence of the Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF) and the Antarctic Polar Front (APF) bisected the survey area into two distinct zones, the Sub- Antarctic Zone (SAZ) and the Antarctic Zone (AAZ). <p>The systematic and population genetic relationships were characterised for three ecologically related euphausiid species: Euphausia lucens, E. recurva and E. vallentini. These species have different geographical distributions and life histories. All three species have a circumpolar distribution in the Southern Hemisphere while E. recurva is also distributed in the North Pacific. DNA sequence variation was determined for three regions of mitochondrial DNA and a single nuclear gene. It was conclusively demonstrated that both E. lucens and E. vallentini represent valid taxonomic species with f

The vertical and horizontal distributions of Euphausiacea in the northern Gulf of Mexico, including the location of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, were analyzed from 340 trawl samples collected between April-June, 2011. This study is the first comprehensive survey of euphausiid distributions from depths deeper than 1000 m in the Gulf of Mexico and included stratified sampling from five discrete depth ranges (0-200 m, 200-600 m, 600-1000 m, 1000-1200 m, and 1200-1500 m). Certain species of pelagic euphausiids and hyperbenthic mysids (Crustacea) show highly integrated social behaviour comparable in many aspects to schooling in higher marine organisms such as fish, squid and mammals. The ethology, form, maintenance, occurrence and population structure of aggregations of three species of euphausiid and six species of mysid are described. An attempt is made to define the adaptive advantages and selective pressures determining the characteristics of social behaviour of marine crustaceans as a whole, between orders, and between species. The evolutionary history of krill (Euphausiacea: Crustacea) was studied through information held in their DNA. The earliest events in the evolution of this group were investigated by phylogenetic analysis of slowly evolving nuclear DNA sequences of krill and their near relatives. These analyses established the sister taxon of krill to be the Mysida. Molecular dating techniques suggested that krill diverged from the Mysida in the upper Carboniferous, two lineages of krill survived the end Cretaceous extinctions, and the extant genera of Euphausiidae radiated during the early Palaeogene.
