Abstract:
Italy is one of the European countries hosting the largest number of Chinese immigrants. In the early 1980’s, the first Chinese new migrants came to Italy, where they would find an employment in the Italian textile industry. Since then, Chinese overseas have played an important role in the field of fashion, a sector of the Italian economy with a high demand in production and manual work. Petty trading and small-scale enterprises are also representations of the Chinese population’s activity in Italy. This article provides statistics concerning the Chinese migrants as an economically active person and the activities of the Chinese community in Italy as a whole. The authors analyze the phenomenon of Chinese labour migration to Italy from the point of view of the “push and pull factors” migration theory. This article illustrates the main factors leading Chinese citizens to leave their home country and shift to Italy, where China turns out to be the point of origin for one of the largest communities of extra-EU immigrants. It is shown that for the Chinese, Italy is a destination country, which is largely due to the already existing migrant network. As a case-study in the frame of this analysis, the authors take Prato (a municipal township located in Tuscany), renowned for hosting the largest Chinatown in Europe (so called “Chinese exclave”).

Abstract:
AbstractThis response to critics gives me the opportunity to develop some aspects of the argument in Authoritarian Liberalism and the Transformation of Modern Europe. I do so by foregrounding the concept of political freedom, articulated by Franz Neumann. Authoritarian liberalism operates by suppressing political freedom and democracy. First making its mark in late Weimar, authoritarian liberalism is constructed in a more passive fashion in the decades after the Second Word War. Although it is contested by social movements in the 1960’s and 70’s, it is ultimately reinforced in the turn to neoliberalism. This reaches its apogee at the Treaty of Maastricht, with the de-politicization of economic and monetary union and the deepening and widening of the European Union. German ordoliberalism, which functions as an ideological support to authoritarian liberalism, is instructive, but is only a part of this story; Germany is at most ‘semi-hegemonic’ in Europe. Authoritarian liberalism operates instead through limiting the constitutional imagination in all member states of the Union. I end with some reflections on Walter Benjamin, whose philosophy of history inspired the cover of the book.

Abstract:
Abstract. The increase in emission of sulphur oxides and nitrogen (both oxidised and reduced forms) since the mid-1800s caused a severe decline in pH and ANC in acid-sensitive surface waters across Europe. Since c.1980, these emissions have declined and trends towards recovery from acidification have been widely observed in time-series of water chemistry data. In this paper, the MAGIC model was applied to 10 regions (the SMART model to one) in Europe to address the question of future recovery under the most recently agreed emission protocols (the 1999 Gothenburg Protocol). The models were calibrated using best available data and driven using S and N deposition sequences for Europe derived from EMEP data. The wide extent and the severity of water acidification in 1980 in many regions were illustrated by model simulations which showed significant deterioration in ANC away from the pre-acidification conditions. The simulations also captured the recovery to 2000 in response to the existing emission reductions. Predictions to 2016 indicated further significant recovery towards pre-acidification chemistry in all regions except Central England (S Pennines), S Alps, S Norway and S Sweden. In these areas it is clear that further emission reductions will be required and that the recovery of surface waters will take several decades as soils slowly replenish their depleted base cation pools. Chemical recovery may not, however, ensure biological recovery and further reductions may also be required to enable these waters to achieve the "good ecological status" as required by the EU Water Framework Directive. The seminal work by Cox (1975, 1996), MacBeth and Merville (1979, 1980) and Emanuel and Macbeth (1982) show that, both theoretically and empirically, the constant elasticity of variance option model (CEV) is superior to the Black–Scholes model in explaining market prices. In this paper, we extend the MacBeth and Merville (1979, 1980) research by using a European contract (S&P 500 index options). We find supportive evidence to the MacBeth and Merville results although our sample is not subject to American premium biases. Furthermore, we reduce the approximation errors by using the non-central chi-square probability functions proposed by Shroder (1989).

Over the last 20 years the wage-education relationships in the United States and Germany have evolved very differently, while the education compositions of employment have evolved in a parallel fashion. In this paper, we show how these patterns shed light on the nature of recent technological change and highlight the importance of taking into account movements in the ratio of human capital to physical capital when examining changes in the returns to skill. Our analysis indicates that the United States could have prevented the increase in wage inequality observed in the 1980's by a faster accumulation of physical capital.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the dynamics that allowed the derogatory term “Ostjuden” to reappear in academic writing in post-Holocaust Germany. This article focuses on the period between 1980’s and 2000’s, complementing earlier studies that focused on the emergence of the term “Ostjuden” and on the complex representations of Eastern European Jews in Imperial and later Weimar Germany. It shows that, despite its well-evidenced discriminatory history, the term “Ostjuden” re-appeared in the scholarly writing in German and has also found its way into German-speaking public history and journalism. This article calls for applying the adjectival term “osteuropäische Juden” (Eastern European Jews), using a term that neither essentializes Eastern European Jews nor presents them in an oversimplified and uniform manner.

Abstract:
This paper provides a bibliometric analysis of the articles in the field of operations research or management science (OR/MS) published in the years 1980–2018 by European researchers. The analysis’s objective is to identify and examine the current state of OR/MS studies in Europe, which publishes about 38% of the papers published worldwide. The analysis was based on the data from the Web of Science (WoS) databases. We found a total of 65,352 papers in 148 different journals in the OR/MS field. The results provide a general picture of the studies, which are classified according to the most influential authors, institutions, papers, and journals. The study revealed that the ratio of OR/MS studies having at least one European author has steadily increased over the decades from 28.27% in the 1980 s to 41.29% in the 2010 s. The analysis also provides citation statistics of the European OR/MS articles. The study concluded that the impact of European publications is less than the impact of U.S. publications. The bibliometric analysis of the studies showed that only a small portion of the countries/regions, institutions, and even authors published a substantial portion of the papers, as indicated by the Pareto rule. The research trends have been identified through an analysis of keyword usage over the years. In keyword analysis, which subcategories are studied together is also identified. In the paper, collaboration among countries and institutions is also identified and depicted by using VOS viewer.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at showcasing the movement of African cultural meaning from Africa to Europe by Europeans in their involvement in the African slave trade as well as the colonization of Africa, which was the imprisonment of the African cultural expression as well as a limitation of its development and further production. The thesis also addresses one of the reason for the global circulation of the European culture, which is the search and achievement of absolute power and control over the minds of its conquests in order to become a dominant culture. Note, however that the act of becoming a dominant culture stem from the European cultural persuasion of the dominance of its culture by its self and not a reflection of epistemological and ontological superiority. Note also that in claiming to be a dominant culture, the European culture is in reality only in control of its conquests, which are cultures whose nature is to its full knowledge, and whose meaning it distributes upon will and purpose. Therefore, the movement of African cultural values, norms and beliefs to Europe and the Euro‐Atlantic world, implies that the ideas from which the European fashion system´s inspiration is founded, are in essence not only European derived. This conclusion is based on a critical analysis of the nature of the European culture and its authentic self, a self that produces European culture.<br>Program: Textilt management, fashion management

The corpus of this research was built out of this set of images, enabling the construction of the social practices visibility issue, referring to a certain female simulacrum and type of women, inserted in the image universe of the magazine. Thus, the research revolves around the questions: What kind of Brazilian woman simulacrum Alceu Penna proposed through O Cruzeiro magazine? How did he construct this simulacrum in the fashion drawings in the magazine? This way, the research seeks to identify and analyze the fashion images proposed by the designer as its general goal. Such images signal female features that will anchor the construction of a Brazilian woman simulacrum. For the specific goals the research seeks to achieve the following: 1) Present the female way(s) of dressing conveyed in Alceu Penna s column called Figurinos; 2) Contribute for the identification of the Brazilian woman in the 1950 s decade; 3) Verify existing conceptual relations between fashion, woman simulacrum and the culture industry represented in O Cruzeiro magazine, within the column Figurinos during that period; 4) Establish the logic in the relations between the expression categories (plastic formants) and the content categories (meaning generative course) in order to describe the type of semiosis existing between expression plan and content plan; 5) Identify correlations between the fields of fashion, advertising and economics in the magazine; 6) Contribute to fashion studies. The methodological procedures compose a descriptive and interpretative method for the analysis of verbal and visual arrangements of the text, named syncretic, which copes with the identification of mechanisms that structure internally the text in relation to the sociohistorical context. This way, the structural complexity of the text was understood, in which the relations and semiosis are produced as a whole of meaning, according to Algirdas Julien Greimas theoretical framework. Also, the sociosemiotics developed by Eric Landowski was used, highlighting the concepts of simulacrum, presence as a sense system, correlated to interaction and visibility systems. The analysis of the visual aspect of fashion plates in the column was grounded on Jean-Marie Floch s plastic and syncretic semiotics approaches. As for the visuality aspect of fashion Ana Claudia de Oliveira s statements were used, which relate it to appearance discourses. Having this accession, the semiotic analysis tested the hypothesis that Alceu Penna s fashion plates shape a slim, thin female body, with marked waist and gestures that show sometimes a relaxed, moved posture in its internal world and sometimes a formal, static and conservative one in a social environment. It was apprehended in these drawings the construction of a family woman simulacrum, who is within a dependence relation with the masculine, and a Brazilian woman simulacrum, who follows the international fashion trends and shows herself to others, besides the adoption of Brazilian culture stereotypes, in order to reveal her insertion and sense of belonging to the elites context. The drawings correlate to the advertising discourses of the magazine, that promote an economic model of consumption of goods produced by the implanted industry in the country, linked a model Brazilian social of a modern way of life, where the masculine and the feminine have support with French and New Yorker fashion matrixes<br>Esta dissertação refere-se à pesquisa que abrange as áreas da semiótica discursiva, comunicação e moda, tendo como universo o conjunto de imagens de moda dos figurinos de Alceu Penna inserido na coluna Figurinos da revista O Cruzeiro, da década de 1950.

Abstract:
碩士<br>東海大學<br>工業設計學系<br>94<br>The Fashionable style which exists in our daily life is always changing and unpredictable. Excepting the ideas from designers, many factors also effect the changes of fashionable style including politics, economics, society, technology, environment, time, and etc. In this study, social phenomenon which is from 1950’s to 1980’s and the development of fashion and industrial products will be analyzed and generalized. This study focuses on the same period’s fashion and industrial products, and compare with their forms, colors and qualities, and look into both relationships under the social development. The result will be the reference resources for industrial design. The result of the study shows that social phenomenon influents the changes of fashionable style. We also find the similarities in the development of fashion and industrial products in the same period. In the 1950’s, owing to the lack of goods and materials and paying much attention to living needs, the fashion and the industrial products in this period both show that functional style and concise style. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, the society was in the unstable situation. The anti-tradition’s ideas had risen. The styles in fashion and industrial products were colorful, anti-traditional, symbolic, and material. In the 1980’s, the products went out of use quickly that cause the pollution, unusual weather and reduction of energy. Those situations all were reflected on fashion and the industrial products, and were developed style of protecting environment and style of concise. We can understand that the relationships between fashion and industrial products were shaped by social phenomenon. After comparison and analysis of their forms and colors, there are common characteristics. The mainly common characteristic in forms is style. The mainly common characteristics in color are chrominance and luminance. From the study, it can be seen that observing the changes of social phenomenon is helpful to understand how the fashionable style is formed and think about the trend of design in the future. The colors and forms which are common factors for fashion and industrial products are important to design. Hoping this study can provide the references for the research in the future.

Abstract:
Foaming can hinder gas-liquid separation, therefore, it is desirable to break the foam upstream of separation facilities. There are different methods to breakup foam, including chemical (utilizing defoaming agent), mechanical (such as cyclones), and thermal (by increasing temperature). Foam stability and breakup are studied in a standalone Churn Flow Coalescer (CFC) and in a Churn Flow Coalescer/Gas-Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone© (CFC/GLCC©) system. The goal is to investigate the possible improvement of the foam breakup efficiency in the GLCC© by installing a CFC upstream of the GLCC©. Testing the standalone CFC, it was found that the CFC generates more, but less stable, foam that can be broken more easily. Three different CFC’s are tested with diameters of 1″, 2″ and 3″. For the same inlet conditions, the 3″ CFC with tangential inlet was found to be the most efficient for generating less stable foam. The optimal operating conditions for this CFC are at low superficial gas velocities, namely, vsg(CFC) between 0.1 to 0.3 m/s. Higher flow rates generate smaller bubbles and more stable foam. From testing the CFC/GLCC© system, it is found that foam breakup in this system is more efficient than that of the standalone GLCC©, under the same flow conditions. The operational envelope of the CFC is predicted based on the transition boundary to churn flow developed by Taitel et al. (1980), as a function of the CFC aspect ratio (LE/D). The analysis of transition boundary between slug and churn confirm that less stable foam occurs at the left of churn flow transition boundary.

Abstract:
BS 7910, the UK procedure for the assessment of flaws in metallic structures, was first published almost 30 years ago in the form of a fracture/fatigue assessment procedure, PD6493. It provided the basis for analysing fabrication flaws and the need for repair in a rational fashion, rather than relying on long-established (and essentially arbitrary) workmanship rules. The UK offshore industry in particular embraced this new approach to flaw assessment, which is now widely recognised by safety authorities and specifically referred to in certain design codes, including codes for pressure equipment. Since its first publication in 1980, PD6493/BS 7910 has been regularly maintained and expanded, taking in elements of other publications such as the UK power industry’s fracture assessment procedure R6 (in particular the Failure Assessment Diagram approach), the creep assessment procedure PD6539 and the gas transmission industry’s approach to assessment of locally thinned areas in pipelines. The FITNET European thematic network, run between 2002 and 2006, has further advanced the state of the art, bringing in assessment methods from SINTAP (an earlier European research project), R6, R5 and elsewhere. In particular, the FITNET fracture assessment methods represent considerable advances over the current BS 7910 methods; for example, weld strength mismatch can be explicitly analysed by using FITNET Option 2, and crack tip constraint through Option 5. Corrosion assessment methods in FITNET are also more versatile than those of BS 7910, and now include methods for vessels and elbows as well as for pipelines. In view of these recent advances, the BS 7910 committee has decided to incorporate many elements of the FITNET procedure into the next edition of BS 7910, to be published c2012. This paper summarises the history of the development of BS 7910, its relationship with other flaw assessment procedures (in particular FITNET and R6) and its future.

Abstract:
In spite of current world economic climates, recognition that alternative energy sources to the traditional fossil fuels has to be explored and understood. One potential energy source being researched and developed is hydrogen gas. Currently the most economical method of transporting large quantities of hydrogen gas is through steel pipelines. It is well known that hydrogen embrittlement has the potential to degrade steel’s mechanical properties when hydrogen migrates into the steel matrix. Consequently, the current pipeline infrastructure used in hydrogen transport is typically operated in a conservative fashion. This operational practice is not conducive to economical movement of significant volumes of hydrogen gas as an alternative to fossil fuels. The degradation of the mechanical properties of steels in hydrogen service is known to depend on the microstructure of the steel. Understanding the levels of mechanical property degradation of a given microstructure when exposed to hydrogen gas under pressure can be used to evaluate the suitability of the existing pipeline infrastructure for hydrogen service and guide alloy and microstructure design for new hydrogen pipeline infrastructure. To this end, the microstructures of relevant steels and their mechanical properties in relevant gaseous hydrogen environments must be fully characterized to establish suitability for transporting hydrogen. Previously data from a US Department of Energy/private sector funded project to evaluate four commercially available pipeline steels alloy/microstructure performance in the presences of gaseous hydrogen was presented in 2010. Interest in this previous work from industry and the ASME B31.12 Hydrogen Piping and Pipeline Systems codes and standards committee resulted in additional funding for continued evaluation of additional pipeline steel alloys/microstructures in the presences of gaseous hydrogen. Samples from API grades X52 (1960’s and current vintage designs), X70 (1980’s and current vintage) and X80 along with various samples from an X52 induction bend pipe and one pressure vessel steel A516 Gr 70 are being evaluated. Microstructural characterization, fracture toughness and fatigue testing in the presence of gaseous hydrogen at 800 psig and 3,000 psig are being conducted. This paper will describe the fracture toughness results achieved to date on various commercially available pipeline steels used in the existing North American pipeline infrastructure in the presence of gaseous hydrogen at pressures relevant for transport in pipelines. Microstructures and fracture toughness performances will be compared between these in this study along with those published previously. In addition, recommendations for future work related to gaining a better understanding of steel pipeline performance in hydrogen service will be discussed.

Li, Yingzhi, and Roman Sˇturm. "Determination of Creep Properties From Small Punch Test." In ASME 2008 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2008-61437.

Abstract:
The small punch test is one of the techniques, which can directly assess the current material properties of components on situ. The main advantages of this method are that only small amount of material is needed and no repair is required afterwards. In addition, the test itself is rather simple to perform. Since early 1980’s, the technique has been developed and applied to nuclear reactors, electric power plants for safety assessment. European researchers have carried out the pioneer work on small punch testing at the creep region. Recently the European Code of Practice documents are available for both high and low temperature properties, which summarizes the international experiences in last 20 years and provides a guide line to perform small punch test for metallic materials. This paper gives an overview of the research work on determination of creep properties from small punch test. Verification is performed by comparison of creep properties derived by small punch test and uni-axial tests. An agreement is found and shows that small punch test is able to predict reasonable creep properties of materials. Considerations how to improve the approach are also addressed. Further work is needed as available tests are still limited. This paper makes a starting point that others can improve further.

Abstract:
The meaningful United States regulation of onshore oil and gas field waste/soil commenced in the mid 1980’s in response to a series of state, federal, industry and international initiatives. Most initiatives centered on the design, construction and operation of earthen pits used in the exploration and production of oil and gas (E&amp;P). Prior to this time, earthen pits were constructed as needed by the operator and used in all phases of E&amp;P activity. Chief concerns of the regulators were focused on what had gone into pits historically, what was going into them currently and was the E&amp;P exemption excluding high volume E&amp;P wastes from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations justified. Several investigations, including the comprehensive field study by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1987, determined E&amp;P wastes are ostensibly non-hazardous. EPA concluded regulation of E&amp;P wastes under RCRA Subtitle C was not necessary. To this day there is no U. S. federal regulatory program with exclusive jurisdiction over exempt E&amp;P wastes. Other studies, primarily industry and academic, focusing on land limiting constituents, management practices and pit closure strategies revealed sodium salts and petroleum hydrocarbon in the form of diesel range organics were the primary limiting constituents. One state, Louisiana, adopted the technical aspects of these studies and developed a comprehensive regulation known as Statewide Order 29-B, which was based on the concept of limiting constituents and defined post closure performance standards. These standards limited salinity, sodicity, total metals and total petroleum hydrocarbon (oil &amp; grease) with values varying with respect to landform, land use and closure technique. Other states have adopted some of the concepts and criteria advanced under 29-B but none are as comprehensive. Obviously there is a need to control what goes into pits and how pits should be closed. The industry would best be served by adopting the concepts and standards set forth in the Louisiana 29-B regulation. A few of the provisions could be changed to make it more palatable to industry without sacrificing the protection afforded human and animal health, safety and the environment. Internationally, particularly countries in South America embraced USEPA protocol for testing characteristically hazardous wastes, but 1) without the framework to handle the relatively large volume of non-hazardous E&amp;P waste generated and 2) no regulations or protocols for on-site waste management. Several operators, although partners with state owned oil companies, on their own volition, applied the concepts and standards under Louisiana’s 29-B to rainforests in South America and rice paddies in Indonesia. Canada and European oil and gas producing countries have developed stringent standards not based on science, which favor costly treatment technologies. Generally, these countries prohibit cost effective on-site waste management and closure techniques. This paper traces the evolution of waste/soil remediation within the United States and internationally. We trace the progress as a function of time; the impetus for regulation; and probable future controls.
