Abstract:
There is a new phenomenon in corporate governance of companies – foundations as shareholders. Foundations are traditionally held as legal entities which strive to accomplish a public or charitable purpose. However, modern practice highlights foundations which control companies (foundation-owned companies) or invest in them, thus becoming shareholders. Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and many other countries both in the European Union and outside are a home to big successful companies under the control of foundations. In this new form of corporate governance, relation between management of foundations and companies becomes crucial, especially the extent to which a foundation is actively involved in operating the company, and possible overlapping between managers of the foundation and the company. The goal of this article is to analyze corporate governance of companies which have foundations as their major or minority members/shareholders. This article shall also research into the Croatian foundations and their involvement in companies. The research is based on the publicly available data on portfolio of foundations, which shows if Croatian foundations invest in companies, and thus act as shareholders. This article contributes to the discussion on the importance of foundations in economic development of countries through both corporate and charitable activism.

Abstract:
Development of a territorial community requires efficient use of its capacity taking into account all possible aspects in the course of elaboration and implementation of the development strategy and other local legal and regulative documents. The approach is directly related to maintaining the living activity of a territorial community and should correspond to the interests of population and European standards of state regional policy. In addition to the definition of a community provided by the Law of Ukraine “On Local Governance in Ukraine”, there are also some other. For example, some authors understand territorial community as a single natural and social entity that operates in spatial boundaries of a state and realizes daily needs and interests of population. The paper aims to analyze legal and regulative foundation of the development of territorial communities in conditions of decentralization. The authors analyze current condition of legal and regulative maintenance of local governance reforming in Ukraine in conditions of decentralization of authorities. The paper argues that the major elements of management strategy in CTCs in Ukraine are independence, efficiency, management innovations, quicker and more substantiated decision-making and everything to meet the needs of community’s residents. Management of this sector is grounded on the principles of the provisions of European Charter of Local Self-Government that provides for decentralization of authorities and transfer of resources and responsibilities to local governments. Liabilities of local governments (of consolidated territorial communities) and the mayors are analyzed. The authors prove that in general legal provision of decentralization of local governance corresponds to European requirements and creates reliable ground for practical stage of the reform. The list of issues that require further legal regulation is outlined.

Abstract:
Purpose This work analyses quality management (through the European Foundation for Quality Management-EFQM-model) and transformational leadership in hotels in Spain. Design/methodology/approach The study analyses 102 5-star and 5-star large luxury hotels that answer a questionnaire on transformational leadership and the EFQM model. It analyses the degree of importance of quality and transformational leadership in hotels, the significant differences between groups of hotels (according to stars, size, modality and type of product) and the association between transformational leadership and quality. Findings The results show the levels of quality and transformational leadership, minor significant differences between groups and an association between the two variables. In general, chain-affiliated hotels have a higher level of leadership and a more advanced employee and process management than independent hotels. Also, those hotels that focus on a vacational product show a lower attention to the strategy dimension in the EFQM model. The number of employees is not an important factor to adopt quality. Finally, transformational leadership allows hotels to advance in the development of quality management. Originality/value Although there are studies on quality management that show the importance of leadership for quality, there are few studies that examine transformational leadership and quality in the same study, mainly in the tourism industry, and especially in the case of the hotel industry.

Abstract:
The goal of this article is to analyze problems relating to the mindset of the Ukrainian people as it pertains to Ukraine’s integration into the European Union. Several different methods were used in this analysis. Comparative analysis identified similarities and differences between the peoples of the European Union and Ukraine. Also, an abstract-logical method was used to define the main problems relating to state support for democracy in Ukraine. Finally, a statistical-economic method was used to identify the existence and closeness of the connection between the standard of living and the perpetuation of corruption in Ukraine. The work analyses the principal directions and problems of mentality management for the people of Ukraine and finds that the strategy development for the Ukrainian personality should be focused not only on the self-improvement of each individual but also on developing practical recommendations for strengthening the democratic foundations of Ukrainian society.

The COST ProgrammeThe Cooperation in Science and Technology Programme (COST) is an inter-governmental framework for European Co-operation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research. COST is managed by the European Science Foundation, and in May 2005 supported almost 200 Actions involving nearly 30000 scientists from 32 European member countries and more than 50 participating institutions from 11 non-member countries. These Actions are networks of coordinated national research project in fields which are of interest to a minimum number of participants (at least 5) from different member states. COST Actions cover basic and pre-competitive research as well as activities of public utility. The members of each Action are drawn from member countries which have ratified the Action, and their activities are informed by a programme accepted by the ESF management at time of application and reviewed on an annual basis throughout the Action. Each Action comprises three principal activities: the workshops where the science or technology matters of the Action are presented and discussed; the Action's short-term scientific missions, which allow contacts made during workshop networking to be developed; and, thirdly, the dissemination of the Action's science through publication or electronic communication.

Abstract:
AbstractWaste management, ecological consciousness and environmental protection have become increasingly topical issues ever since the beginning of the 21st century, and in favour of this claim is the fact that there is an increasing number of authors dealing with environmental law, as well the level of global ecological consciousness. The contemporary consumer society is characterized by the fact that it creates a plethora of different kinds of waste. The goal is to create a modern system of integrated waste management in order to encompass the cycle of manufacturing and consumption with a recycling process at the end of the consumer products lifespan. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the European legislation, as well as to analyse the Serbian legislation in the area of waste management. The European legislation on waste management is much older and far more developed than its Serbian counterpart, hence, it represents the foundation for future development of regulations in Serbia. The current waste management legislation in Serbia is largely based on the EU legislation, however, owing to the insufficiently matured and stable Serbian institutions, implementation of these regulations is below the expected level.

Abstract:
The study aims to shed light on the relations between enablers of The European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) and its results at Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS). The study adopts the analytical descriptive approach that is applied at PCBS according to a regular random sample of 100 employees to whom the questionnaire is distributed, and the data is analyzed according to the statistical analysis program (SPSS). The study found out that there is a relation between EFQM's enablers combined with its results at PCBS where the strength of the relation is 86%; moreover, it also shows that there is a statistical relation between leadership, partnerships, resources, processes, products, and services with EFQM's model results and that there is no relation between strategy and staff with EFQM's model results where each enabler is associated with the results with a percentage of (78%) to enable operations, products, services, partnerships, and resources of (75%), (64%) for leadership, (61%) for staff, and (56%) for strategy. The results highlight a number of points of strength; most importantly, that PCBS is keeping pace with the rapid development of technology in data collection to support the credibility of its statistical outputs; in addition to this, PCBS is known for its high levels of planning and review of its work results and that PCBS administrations supports the areas of excellence, creativity, and opportunities for improvement of its staff as well as supporting PCBS's strategy through a set of performance indicators related to society's needs and measurement of impressions. The study came out with recommendations, the most important of which is PCBS' efforts towards achieving the second level of the European institutions "recognized for excellence" and updating the European quality excellence model in light of the rapid technological developments and the modern management information systems.

Abstract:
Students cannot “try” or “experiment” degree curricula in order to choose the best of them. Henceforth their choice cannot rest on experience, repetition and comparison. The accreditation agencies aim at helping them equipping them with distinctive “labels”, thus helping them make their choice. The “labels” would then help reduce the uncertainty on the quality of the services that are exchanged within the market. The subject of the PhD deals with the creation and the increasing role played by the three main accreditation agencies within Europe : AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), EQUIS (the European Quality Improvement System) and AMBA (the Association for MBAs). The main problem may be formulated as follows : how could these agencies gain legitimacy so swiftly ? The research distinguishes two main questions : -The one that deals with the genesis of the accreditation agencies, - And the one that deals with their persistence and their efficiency. First we highlight and compare the so-called diversity of the expansion of the three agencies. Then we focus on the the impact of the three accreditation processes within three French “Grandes Écoles” and three English Business Schools. This will lead us to explore the notion of trust (within the accreditation agencies, the accreditation process and the accreditation themselves). Finally, the “labels” will be considered as a collective form of classification that will enable us to deal with the problems of genesis and efficiency

Abstract:
Much has been written on the subject of sustainable development and the urgent need for society to understand and address human impacts on socio-ecological systems. Emerging from this broad context, the concept of sustainable product development (SPD) represents an important strategy to steer human society towards sustainability. This thesis investigates strategies for integrating sustainability concepts, through organisational learning and stakeholder management, into a new product development tool entitled ‘Touchpoint’. Built on prior research, specifically Methods for Sustainable Product Development(MSPD) and Templates for Sustainable Product Development (TSPD), this could help to eliminate product development approaches that lead to reductionism and ensure that SPD is adopted rapidly and widely.

De, Matos Paula Alexandra Leal. "The development of decision support models for European air traffic flow management." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1998. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2547/.

Full text
Abstract:
Congestion severely affects air traffic in the US and Europe. To protect air traffic controllers from overloads a planning activity, Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM), emerged during the 1970s. ATFM control actions range from departure delays to the re-routing of flights. This research explores how models can be used to support decision-making in European ATFM. To date, most research into this subject has been directed at ATFM in the US, which differs from European ATFM both in terms of decision-making and time scales. Fieldwork was carried out at the EUROCONTROL Central Flow Management Unit, the organisation that manages traffic flows in most of the European airspace. The fieldwork was an OR intervention aimed at identifying suitable decision support models for re-routing flights. The research described here contributes by: 1) describing the European ATFM field and identifying decision support needs; 2) structuring the problems involved in re-routing flights in Europe; 3) providing a framework for the development of re-routing decision support systems (DSS) and 4) assessing the usefulness of optimisation approaches to re-routing flights. A demonstrator is developed to illustrate different re-routing decision support possibilities to the users. This leads to conclusions on the feasibility of various decision support functions including an identification of models and algorithms which can be used for each of the functions. Conclusions on levels of automation and complexity for re-routing DSS are also taken. Three integer models for re-routing flows are presented. They differ in the way congestion is represented. The models are tested on data of traffic crossing the whole French upper airspace. The test reveals that the models can be of use in re-routing flows and can provide significant savings in delays. It also shows that an 'intelligent' component to define the scope of the optimisation problem and a component to process all the data for the models, are needed in a re-routing DSS. The models are compared in terms of impact on congestion, size and execution time and conclusions on their feasibility taken. Extensions to the models are suggested.

Abstract:
Small and medium-sized enterprises are the foundation for the development of each contemporary national economy. Their number affects macroeconomic indices of economies and directly translates into the labour market created by SMEs. This article aims to investigate the key conditionings behind the macroeconomic significance and legal factors of the financial market operation in Poland and the UK, with particular emphasis on the stock exchange as the fundamental element of the capital market. Both AIM and NewConnect are platforms dedicated to SMEs, which have been allowed easier access to this capital market segment by minimising mandatory legal conditions. This study analyses the number of listed companies and their capitalisation values in 1999–2015, covering: the rules of the financial market operation, with a special focus on the legal bases of the stock market operation in the economies investigated; legal conditions for the development of this economic segment; and a detailed analysis of the number of participants and capitalisation values achieved on the Warsaw and London Stock Exchanges, in particular AIM and NewConnect. This paper builds on source data from various annual reports and stock exchange publications drawn up and made available by stock exchanges and financial supervisors. The attempt to compare the indices and capacities of the WSE and the NC with the biggest European player is motivated by the fact that the Warsaw Stock Exchange is classified as the largest and most dynamically growing stock exchange in Central and Eastern Europe.

Abstract:
Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are increasingly being used in the business world, and this process plays an important role in economic theory and lays the foundations for sustainable business development. The global recovery in foreign direct investment (FDI) was strong in 2015, with global FDI flows jumping by 38%, their highest level since the global economic and financial crisis of 2008–2009. A surge in cross-border M&As to $721 billion, from $432 billion in 2014, was the principal factor behind the global rebound. These M&As were partly driven by very large corporate reconfigurations by multinational enterprises (MNEs), i.e. changes in legal or ownership structures, including shifting their headquarters for strategic reasons and tax inversions. This paper examines the key M&As stimulating strategic objectives and causes, and ways of this process, as well as the cross-border M&As market activity. The objective of this paper is to identify ways, purposes and reasons of M&As transactions, and to present the factors influencing this process and market activity. The object of this research is the M&As transactions market. Research methodology of this paper is based on scientific literature and statistical information systematic, comparative, logical and econometric analysis.
