This paper presents an empirical assessment of bilateral migration flows into the EU-15 countries. Using an extended gravity model, it identifies economic, welfare state, geospatial and linguistic variables as the principal determinants of migration flows into the EU-15 countries. As long as its effect is not offset by a high unemployment rate in the host country, the level of social protection expenditure influences migrants' choice of destination. However, albeit acting as a joint force with other economic, cultural and geospatial variables, the welfare state characteristics of the host coun

The last ten years have seen important migratory movements from China towards Africa. The phenomenon is not well known, but comparing different sources reveals three kinds of migrations: a labor migration within the frame of public works realized by big Chinese enterprises, an entrepreneurial migration composed mainly of traders, and a proletarian migration in transit in Africa waiting for opportunities to go on to European countries. The article gives a succinct description of these migrations and explores their possible relation with the new foreign policy of the People's Republic of China.

ABSTRACTThis article offers the first multivariate regression study of international migration in early modern Europe. Using unique eighteenth-century data about maritime workers, we created a data set of migration flows among European countries to examine the role of factors related to geography, population, language, the market, and chain migration in explaining the migration of these workers across countries. We show that among all factors considered in our multivariate analysis, the geographical characteristics of the destination countries, size of port towns, and past migrations are among

How do we reconcile the persistence of a Europe of fragmented nation-states and the European integration project based on the principle of free movement? While places tend to be associated with fixed territories and borders, it is argued that complex global flows and connections may disrupt such notions. Abstract:
Specific models and mechanisms of

The radial distribution of bubbles in air-water bubbly flow was experimentally investigated using a dual optical probe and hot-film anemometry. The experiments were performed in a 200mm diameter vertical pipe at liquid superficial velocity in the range of 0.2 to 0.68m/s and gas superficial velocity from 0.005 to 0.18m/s. At low void fraction flows, the radial void fraction profiles show a wall peak. As the void fraction increases the profiles tend to peak at the pipe centreline. The distribution of the net radial interfacial forces for both core and wall peak void distributions was obtained us

We use the direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach to study the motion and deformation of leukocytes in pressure driven flows in a parallel plate channel in the case where there is an adhesion force between the leukocytes and the channel wall and when the adhesion force is absent. Two composite fluid models, consisting of a membrane, cytoplasm and a nucleus, are used to describe leukocytes. The first is the composite-drop model in which the cytoplasm and the nucleus are modeled as fluids, and the second is the drop-rigid-particle model in which the cytoplasm is modeled as a fluid and the nu

Monodisperse and polydisperse suspension flows form an extensive section of natural and technological flows. These flow structures can be categorized to sedimenting or neutrally buoyant suspensions considering the density ratio between particle phase to dispersion phase. Biological systems, food processing, ceramic injection, dynamic filtration and air conditioning are examples of areas that such flows arise. Various complicated interparticle interactions and their inevitable influence on and from the continuous phase result in some interesting phenomena which are challenging to justify. This

Abstract:
This Handbook is intended as a reference tool for people working in the area of immigration and asylum in Ireland. The recent dramatic shift towards increased immigration in Ireland has resulted in the emergence of much new information in diverse fields, including statistics, policy and law. The Handbook aims to draw together such information up to the end of 2007 (with 2008 updates where appropriate). An overview of available statistics on flows and stocks of immigrants is provided. This is followed by a discussion of the large number of new domestic policies, which have emerged as policymake

Abstract:
This rapid evidence review provides an overview of migration in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), encompassing flows, causes, and associated issues. Sections provide an overview of historic migration patterns and contemporary characteristics, highlighting significant trends such as extensive mixed migration and the impact of crises, notably in Venezuela and Haiti. The historical trajectories of migration in the region include waves of immigration from Europe to intra-regional movements and south-north migration flows. The review draws attention to the multifaceted nature of migration driv

Migration has recently taken an important place in the agenda of many governments around the world. But the phenomenon of international mobility of individuals is not new. Following Massey [2003], the modern history of international migration can be divided into four periods. During the mercantile period, from about 1500 to 1800, world immigration was dominated by flows out of Europe and stemmed from processes of colonization and economic growth under mercantile capitalism

The recent intensification in irregular maritime migrations in the Atlantic route through the Canary Islands, which is employed to reach the European mainland from Africa, coincides in time with the presence of the coronavirus pandemic and incorporates some novelties involving a flow that has been present in the archipelago’s evolution for almost three decades. It also exhibits many similarities with the permanent manifestation of this influx, even though the scant planning and weak response initially implemented in an effort to comprehensively manage this migration has placed the phenomenon a

Remittances, the portion of migrant workers' earnings sent back home to their families, have been a critical means of financial support for generations. But, for the most part, these flows have historically been -hidden in plain view-, often uncounted and even ignored. All that is now changing -as the scale of migration increases, the corresponding growth in remittances is gaining widespread attention. This report has been elaborated based on a study commissioned by IFAD to the Inter-American Dialogue in collaboration with the Multilateral Investment Fund of the IDB and contributions from the
