Abstract:
Purpose This paper explores the development of a luxury retail shoe brand in Belle Époque Vienna. Design/methodology/approach Footwear retailing and marketing history is a neglected area. Unfortunately, no business records have survived from Robert Schlesinger’s shoe stores. However, it has been possible to reconstruct the history of the development of the Paprika Schlesinger brand from its extensive advertising in the Viennese newspaper, the Neue Freie Presse, with the guidance of the founder’s grandson, Prof Robert A. Shaw, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, Birkbeck, University of London, England. This case study would not have been possible without the digitization of some major collections of primary sources. In 2014, the European Union’s Europeana digitization initiative launched a new portal via the Library of Europe website which provides access to selected digitized historic newspaper collections in libraries across Europe. The project partners include the Austrian National Library which has digitized full runs of several major historic Austrian newspapers, including the Neue Freie Presse. Other project partners which have digitized historic newspapers which are relevant to this paper are the Landesbibliothek Dr Friedrich Teßmann of Italy’s Südtirol region, the National Library of France and the Berlin State Library. An associate project partner library, the Slovenian National and University Library’s Digital Library of Slovenia, has also digitized relevant historic newspapers. Furthermore, the City of Vienna has digitized a complete set of Vienna city directories as part of its Wienbibliothek Digital project. Findings This paper suggests that Robert Schlesinger created one of the first European luxury retail shoe brands. Originality/value This is the first academic study of the historical development of the advertising and marketing of a European luxury retail shoe brand.

Abstract:
University libraries in Greece perform poorly by the standards of most other European countries. Only two of the universities have unified campuses, and as a result there is not much library planning. Student education depends mainly on lectures and lecture notes, and teachers do not encourage reading, so that little use of the library is needed. A recent extensive survey (on which the article is based) showed that library provision is widely distributed within each university, and in several universities coordination between the various libraries is weak. Library staff are inadequate in number and training. Collections are generally small, and student provision is minimal. Materials consist almost entirely of monographs and journals. Many libraries do not use recognized cataloguing rules or classification systems. The application of automation has been slow. Services are largely restricted to consultation and lending. Cooperation is informal, as there is no national interlending system. Opening hours are relatively short. Expenditure on libraries (as on higher education generally) is low. Improvement of the situation requires action on several fronts, including the creation of a National Committee on University and Research Libraries.

Abstract:
Purpose – Knowledge Management (KM) in libraries refers to the systematic management and control of knowledge as an important resource when producing high-quality library and information services. If one wishes to make the optimal use and dissemination of organizational and other work life related knowledge, then one needs to acquire appropriate KM tools and to adopt a systematic procedure for KM throughout the organization. This can exert an energizing effect on the lifelong learning of the libraries’ staff which is essential in today’s rapidly changing scientific information environment. The purpose of this paper is to analyze KM practices is selected higher education libraries. Design/methodology/approach – This qualitative research conducted in three academic libraries – IZUS/Universitätsbibliothek Stuttgart, Germany; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) Library Barcelona, Spain; and University of Eastern Finland (UEF) Library, Finland – makes a comparison of the KM processes being implemented in each of the institutions to ensure the continuous learning of the libraries’ staff. Findings – This comparative study revealed several key reasons and best practices for implementing KM procedures in the selected university libraries. They are collected under three main issues: KM advantages; KM technological opportunities; and KM organizational culture. Research limitations/implications – Based on three cases and thus are mainly examples of the KM implementation. Practical implications – Paper gives tools for libraries and their management on the KM system implementation. Social implications – Based on the paper’s findings the KM implementation in all the selected libraries led to better management and better staff inclusion into the library service development. Originality/value – KM implementation studies are still rare among the libraries.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to show the progress made by 37 universities in Spain in adopting the “Information Commons” model, a strategy planed 10 years ago by the Spanish University Library Network (hereafter referred to as REBIUN) to meet the demands of the European Higher Education Area. Design/methodology/approach – A Web survey was sent to 70 supervisors or directors of Spanish university libraries. Findings – This paper reveals current approaches toward the goal of convergence and provides an idea of the extent to which universities have thus far managed to integrate services and resources in the Information Commons. Not all libraries have initiated this path or it is still in its early stages and the transformation is taking place at different “speeds” or degrees of implementation. Originality/value – The paper shows, for the first time, that the incomplete, scant or absent integration of university services and resources in an Information Commons has to do with multiple factors in each library. The human factor is the key element in this type of change process. Commitment, network building and synergies are thus necessary factors in the success of this process.

Abstract:
Founded in 1930 as the “house library” of a Jesuit seminary, the Regis College Library collection presents evidence of almost 400 years of Jesuit participation in the socio-cultural development of present-day Canada. Today, the Regis Library contributes to the University of Toronto Library system, the third largest aggregated research university collection in North America. The provenance of the collection offers a vantage on the cultural encounter between European Jesuits and indigenous peoples. The palimpsest of spine markings and other collection metadata signals the replacement of encyclopedic approaches to knowledge and subject mapping with a more empirical approach to book classification based on actual patterns of collection and use. A recent pilot research project extends this empirical approach by applying advanced analytic algorithms to digitized text collections. Readers are invited to reflect on the socio-political power differences introduced by book classification and challenged by access to sophisticated computational tools.

 Abstract
Objective – To investigate the current state of research data services (RDS) in European academic libraries by determining the types of RDS being currently implemented and planned by these institutions.
 Design – Email survey.
Setting – European academic research libraries.
Subjects – 333 directors of the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) academic member libraries.
Methods – The researchers revised a survey instrument previously used for the DataONE survey of North American research libraries and conducted pilot testing with European academic library directors. The survey instrument was created using the Qualtrics software. The revised survey was distributed by email to LIBER institutions identified as academic libraries by the researchers and remained open for 6 weeks. Question topics included demographics, RDS currently offered, RDS planned, staffing considerations, and the director’s opinions on RDS. Libraries from 22 countries participated and libraries were grouped into 4 regions in order to compare regional differences. Data analysis was conducted using Excel, SPSS or R software University of Tennessee, University of Tampere, and University of Göttingen.
Main Results – 119 library directors responded to more than one question beyond basic demographics, for a response rate of 35.7%. Among the libraries surveyed, more libraries offer consultative services than offered technical support for RDS, although a majority planned to offer technical services in the future. Geographically, libraries in western Europe offer more RDS compared with other regions. More libraries have reassigned or plan to reassign current staff to support RDS services, rather than hire new staff for these roles. Regardless of whether or not they currently offer RDS, library directors surveyed strongly agree that libraries need to offer RDS to remain relevant.
Conclusion – The authors determine that a majority of library directors recognize that data management is increasingly important and many libraries are responding to this by implementing RDS and collaborating across their institutions and beyond to help meet these needs. Future research is suggested to track how these services develop over time, how libraries respond to the staffing challenges of RDS, and whether consultative rather than technical services continue to be primary forms of RDS offered.

Abstract:
After a short introduction of the LIS landscape in Austria, the development of LIS education for academic librarians will be discussed. Until 2004 library education in Austria consisted mainly of vocational training to which only university graduates and eventually high-school graduates were admitted. In the nineteen-nineties, with Austria joining the European Union and the creation of universities of applied sciences, LIS education became possible at the university level. For various reasons, the two established LIS programmes were discontinued after a relatively short time period. Major changes in university legislation concerning the legal autonomy of Austrian universities meant, however, that a post-graduate inter-university library and information studies programme could be launched in 2004. With the fourth revision of the curriculum in 2019, the programme has become even more aligned with international practice in terms of content, didactic methods and flexibility. The increased dynamism in library education has also had an impact on the creation of non-academic training and continuing education programmes.

Abstract:
Svend Larsen: Kindred souls. Svend Dahl and Wilhelm Munthe on the professionalisation of academic librarianship
Svend Dahl (1887–1963) and Wilhelm Munthe (1883–1965) were prominent figures in Scandinavian and international librarianship in the first part of the 20th Century. From 1922–1953, Munthe was head of Oslo University Library which was also Norwegian national library. Internationally, he is known as the author of American Librarianship from a European angle. An attempt at an examination of policies and activities (1939) and as president of the international library federation IFLA (1947–1951). Svend Dahl was head of Copenhagen University Library 1925–1943 and head of the Royal Library and national librarian 1943–1952. Internationally, he is known for his many publications such as the History of the Book (Danish, English, French, German, Spanish and Swedish editions). Dahl and Munthe exchanged just under 200 letters between 1916 and 1953. These letters reveal their views concerning academic librarianship and the need and the ways to professionalise it. In the exchange of letters, the two men also discussed other topics, such as education, internationalisation, and the separation of library and university.

Abstract:
In this article, Poonam M. Ganglani investigates how the preserved manuscripts in the Lord Chamberlain's archives of John Hart's stage version of Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1961 reflect the social and theatrical landscape of the times. The notion of the Lord Chamberlain as a custodian of morals, the dangerous power attributed to stage semiotics, and the response to sexual impropriety on stage are among the areas discussed. The Lord Chamberlain's correspondence files offer the only significant glimpse into this theatrical adaptation of Lawrence's novel, as into other unpublished plays of the time; this article also investigates the ways in which the Lord Chamberlain's archives in the British Library, London, serve as a unique and valuable tool for the post-war British theatre historiographer in research related to such unpublished plays. Poonam M. Ganglani is a postgraduate under the Mundus Masters ‘Crossways in European Humanities’ international study programme, having studied in three European universities over two years: the Université de Perpignan Via Domitia in France, the University of Sheffield in England, and the Università degli studi di Bergamo in Italy.

Abstract:
The first modern university concept is made up of a set of simple and proven facts that are rarely studied at European Universities today, from Sarajevo to London. Simply they are just consciously suppressed. This makes the link from the mind disappeared unable to answer the question: how the mid-sluggish religious centuries-old period of Europe was awakened, stepping into a new age. Thus, the current islamophobia would be more easily overcome and people as mankind could more easily cooperate and settle in the beauty of life. Young women, and the founder Fatima Al-Fihri from the Karaouine, University in Africa, established curricula, degrees, diplomas, gown and tassels, and sent the first large volumes of translated books, scientific discoveries and insights for the establishment of early European universities such as Sorbonne, Bologna, Padua from Tunisia, Morocco, Africa, actually from the huge library of the Al Fihri University, University of Al-Karaouine. Can this truth be embedded into the curricula of modern university knowledge?

Abstract Having graduated in architecture at the University of Technology Wien [Vienna], I subsequently engaged in post-graduate studies at The Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning / University College London. Corporate design and signage design attracted my attention. Back home a major bank and Vienna airport (VIE), among others, were the first clients of my company. As chairman of Committee 133 “Public information symbols” of “Austrian Standards”, I was responsible for the elaboration of several theme specific national and international standards. In 1993 I founded the IIID International Institute for Information Design. Several r&d projects within the frame of the 6th and 7th European Union Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development were carried out. However, due to the required but denied support from the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, the founding of an interdisciplinary institute, affiliated to the United Nations University (UNU), did not materialize. No chance either to establish “Visual Communication Design” at a local university. Until now the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication of The University of Reading (UK) seems to be the only theme specific institution on tertiary university level in Europe. Challenges nowadays range from legible medical package inserts to a much required unified system for the European Union highway signs.

Abstract:
Established in 1982, the University of Botswana (UB) library acquired various collections of missionaries, travelers, explorers, anthropologists, and colonial commissioners in its “Botswana Collection” section. One of these, the Heinz Collection, serves as the case study for this article and is evidence of the range of collections acquired from the library’s founding until 2010, when it ceased to be the sole national university in the country. The Heinz Collection documents the San/Bushmen/Basarwa’s (indigenous community in Botswana) way of life as documented by a former European civil servant. In researching the collection, the authors shed light on the collection’s significance and the cultural heritage of the indigenous San/Bushmen communities that Dr. Heinz lived among and documented during his lifetime. The collection illustrates the impact of social, economic, cultural, governance environments on a community’s way of life and, consequently, its cultural heritage.

When Sir Kyffin Williams, RA died in 2006 he bequeathed a large section of his estate to the National Library of Wales (NLW) – an institution with which the artist, most known for his landscape paintings of north-west Wales, had a long association. Combined with material already in the NLW’s collections, there are now over 200 works in oil, over 1200 works on paper and a comprehensive archive held at Aberystwyth. The collection’s presence in a library rather than museum or gallery raises questions of how the work can be displayed or exhibited. In this essay I will give some background to this collection and the wider art holdings of the National Library of Wales before discussing how geo-spatial approaches are being used to display this collection digitally. This work is being completed as a collaborative Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship (KESS) PhD project between Aberystwyth University School of Art and the National Library of Wales. KESS is part-funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through the European Union’s Convergence Programme (West Wales and the Valleys) administered by the Welsh Government.

This article discusses some findings of a European research project led by Bergen University, ‘Eurosphere: Diversity and the European Public Sphere – Towards a Citizens’ Europe’. The project aimed to evaluate perceptions of the construction of a European Public Sphere and of transnational relations among specific social actors interviewed in 16 European countries, between 2007 and 2012. In this particular article, the authors first examine reactions to the European Diversity Directive in France among three political parties (2 majority and 1 minority), three think-tanks, three NGO/SMO, and four media. Analysis of their attitudes towards diversity reveals a Girondin/Jacobin cleavage across actors. The Directive on Diversity is estimated to have had a positive impact in France because it obliged organizations and institutions to position themselves and revisit the debate on racial and postcolonial questions and on the European role in the democratization process of European societies. Concerning the relationship between the French and the EU’s attempts to build a European public sphere, we find not so much a European Public Sphere understood in the thick sense of the concept but, rather, a progressive Europeanization of the French national public sphere.

This paper describes work undertaken by Data Intensive Cyber Environments Center (DICE) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Liverpool on the development of an integrated preservation environment, which has been presented at the National Coordination Office for Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD), at the National Science Foundation, and at the European Commission. The underlying technology is based on the integrated Rule-Oriented Data System (iRODS), which implements a policy-based approach to distributed data management. By differentiating between different phases of the data life cycle based upon the evolution of data management policies, the infrastructure can be tuned to support data publication, data sharing, data analysis and data preservation. It is possible to build generic data management infrastructure that can evolve to meet the management requirements of each user community, federal agency and academic research project. In order to manage the properties of the data collections, we have developed and integrated scalable digital library services that support the discovery of, and access to, material organized as a collection. The integrated preservation environment prototype implements specific technologies that are capable of managing a wide range of preservation requirements, from parsing of legacy document formats, to enforcement of preservation policies, to validation of trustworthiness assessment criteria. Each capability has been demonstrated and is instantiated in multiple instances, both in the United States as part of the DataNet Federation Consortium (DFC) and through multiple European projects, primarily the FP7 SHAMAN project.

Abstract:
This article analyses the theological development of the eighteenth-century Church of England priest Augustus Montague Toplady through two manuscript collections. The first of these is a copy of John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament that Toplady heavily annotated during his time as a university student in 1758. This book is held in the Methodist Archives and Research Centre at the John Rylands Library. Toplady’s handwritten notes total approximately 6,000 words and provide additional information regarding the development of his views of John Wesley and Methodism, ones which he would not put into print until 1769. Toplady’s notes demonstrate how he was significantly influenced by the works of certain Dutch, German and Swiss Reformed theologians. The second is a collection of Toplady’s papers held by Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Together, these sources enable Toplady’s own theology and his controversies with Methodists to be viewed from a new perspective. Moreover, these sources provide new insights into Toplady’s conceptualisation of ‘Calvinism’ and changes in the broader Anglican Reformed tradition during the eighteenth century.

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) are commonplace in many universities. Understanding the trends in the usage of these networks is becoming more important. Interesting results can be extracted about association patterns by analyzing WLAN traces from real scenarios. In this work, the library in the main campus of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona has been studied. Daily and weekly patterns of the WLAN connections are shown. The population accessing the network is mostly composed of infrequent users: half of the population accesses the WLAN once during each month. Many users associate to only one of the twelve possible access points, which means that, despite the widespread use of lightweight devices, many users are static. The results of this analysis provide general tools for characterizing campus-wide WLAN and a better understanding of usage and performance issues in a mature wireless network.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study was to establish a massive online open course (MOOC)-based map of higher education knowledge and apply it to university libraries. It hoped to provide more targeted and personalized learning services for every learner. Design/methodology/approach In this study, MOOC and university library information services were outlined, the development status of MOOC at home and abroad and the development of university library information services were introduced, and the necessity and significance of MOOC in developing information services in university libraries were analyzed. What is more, the knowledge map of university libraries was explored. The four modules include the construction of data sets, the identification of related entities from plain text, the extraction of entity relationships and the practical application of knowledge maps. For the logical relationship of the course, a combination of knowledge base and machine learning was adopted. In the knowledge map application module, the knowledge map was visualized. Aiming at the generation of personalized learning scheme, a prior data set was constructed by means of the knowledge base. The original problem was considered as a multi-classification problem. K-nearest neighbor classifier divided all courses into four academic years to obtain all courses. According to the course stage, the personalized learning scheme of some majors in higher education was obtained. Findings The experiment showed that it was feasible to apply the higher education knowledge map based on MOOC to university libraries. In addition, it was effective to divide the course into four stages by classifier. In this way, the specific professional training program can be obtained, the information service of the university library can be improved, and the accuracy and richness of the entire learning program can be increased. Research limitations/implications Due to the limitations of conditions, time and other aspects, there were not many opportunities to visit the field library, which led to limited level and imperfect research. There were many proper nouns and professional terms in foreign references, but my English translation ability was limited. The relevant investigation on foreign studies may not be detailed and comprehensive enough, and the analysis and induction of influencing factors of university library information service may not be rigorous and concise enough. Practical implications As the base of university information dissemination, the university library is the source of knowledge. At the same time, it is also the temple of students’ independent learning and the media of mainstream culture and improving its own information service level is also in line with the trend of The Times. Under this background, this research studied the influence of MOOC on university library information service and focused on the challenges and opportunities faced by university library information service in the MOOC environment, so as to continuously improve its cultural serviceability and better serve teachers and students. Originality/value Since the birth of MOOC, they have exerted great influence and enlightenment on universities and relevant educational institutions within a few years. European and American universities take an active part in the construction of the MOOC platform and explore how to make better use of the library to build MOOC resources in practice. It is also a hot topic for university libraries to participate in the construction of MOOC information resources. Therefore, the study of this topic has both theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract:
According to the late Ali Mazrui, modern Africa is the product of a triple civilizational legacy: African, Arabo-Islamic, and Western (Mazrui 1986). Each civilization left Africa with bodies of knowledge rooted in particular epistemologies and transmitted in written and/or oral form. In the first half of the twentieth century, what became known as the colonial library (Mudimbe 1988: x) had provided the sources and conceptual apparatus for studying African history, but from the mid-twentieth century onwards, nationalist intellectuals sought to deconstruct European colonial intellectual hegemony through the search for alternative sources and interpretations of African history. Notable among these intellectuals is Cheikh Anta Diop, whose work highlighted the close connections between Egypt and the rest of the continent to claim Ancient Egypt's historical legacy for the continent. Nigeria's first university – University College Ibadan, which later became the University of Ibadan – provided a forum for talented Africans and Europeans to pursue the project of decolonizing African history. Jeremiah Arowosegbe's survey provides insights into the rise and decline of academic commitment in the African continent, with particular reference to South Africa and Nigeria.

Among Floridians, Jacksonville is known as the “First Coast.” It is a reference to the fact that Northeast Florida has some of the oldest European settlements in North America. The numerous local historical organizations are forever challenged to preserve and share the rich history of “all that is Jacksonville–including early settlers, 19th- and 20th-century urban planning and architecture, civil rights and Black history, city governance, and our national parks heritage.” They often do not have the resources needed, but local academic libraries are rich in resources and tools that can benefit organizations outside the library and help bring more awareness to the organizations and the collections they have. As the role of academic libraries continues to evolve with technological changes, libraries are continuously looking for ways to reinvent themselves and expand their role within their university and throughout the greater community.

Abstract:
The Louis Lewin Collection of archival materials in the Rare Book Room of Yeshiva University comprises some 400 boxes of historical records on the Jews in Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Lewin (1868–1941) was a rabbi and Jewish historian in Poland between the Wars and a proponent of the Wissenschaft des Judentums, “Science of Judaism,” movement in Jewish scholarship. The documents Lewin collected are of great historical value for their description of Jewish life in Europe, the history of Judaism, and Hebrew language and literature. While some records are original documents, others were copied by hand by Lewin from non-Jewish repositories in state or municipal archives. Not only are these documents precious for their historical value, but they are unique survivors of the devastation of World War II. Most of the records of these communities in Poland and Germany were obliterated, and the communities themselves disappeared. All that now exists are the copies that Louis Lewin preserved. Most items in this unique collection have been cataloged, and the rest are being worked on. The catalog records can be found in the Yeshiva University Library OPAC and on RLIN.

Abstract:
Public universities library projects financed from the national and European funds at the disposal of state-level and regional institutions in PolandThe main objective of this article is to provide an overview of potential financing sources for library projects which can be executed by public universities. The most important authorising officers of the funds for pro-development activities of libraries are state-level and regional institutions represented by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Digital Poland Project Centre, the National Centre for Research and Development and Marshall’s Offices. The applied method of analysis and synthesis of the acts, regulations and guidelines within the scope of eligible expenditure and adetailed description of national and regional operational projects has allowed for the types of projects which can be financed form non-university national and European resources to be identified. The national and regional level institutions supporting the activities for the development of libraries are mainly focused on the projects concerned with preservation of the unique library resources of high importance for science or its heritage, developing scientific library resources and making them available in digital form, as well as increasing access to data bases which contain scientific information, including Virtual Library of Science. The above mentioned institutions finance or co-finance both the building and the expansion of interoperational scientific digital repositories of regional or national scope, which are user-oriented and co-finance the activities for the improvement of skills in managing information and using professional data bases in educational process. The variety of project types which are subject to external financing makes it possible to execute projects which are in accordance with current strategies for the development of libraries, expressing their current and future plans. The research conducted has shown current availability of funds for the activities for development of scientific libraries on the level of both state and regional institutions. The availability of these funds by means of competition enables the execution of innovative projects, the main purpose of which should be to achieve competitive advantage of specific academic centres on the market of library services in Poland. The research has also confirmed the possibility of obtaining funding form the European or national funds up to 100% of eligible expenditure of the projects concerned first of all with the development of e-science. It is particularly important in the situation when university budgets cannot ensure financing for all the expenditure connected with pro-development needs of their libraries.

“I Believe that a Designated Role on Earth is There for Me as Well”. Unknown Letters from Jan Otrębski to Jan Rozwadowski in the Academic Library of the Polish Academy of Art and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences In Kraków The Special Collections Department of the PAU and PAN Scientific Library in Krakow stores the correspondence of the eminent Indo-European linguist, professor of the Jagiellonian University, Jan Michał Rozwadowski (1867–1935). The collection includes the letters and postcards of Jan Szczepan Otrębski (1889–1971) and covers the period of thirteen years (1917–1930). It contains a lot of information on the considerations and doubts of the future Baltic linguist J. Otrębski, who at the moment was just starting his scientific career. Particularly clear is the thread of doubts about the rightness of choosing a career in science, and the lack of faith in one’s own abilities and the usefulness for science that often appears. The author of the letters repeatedly seeks advice and asks for help from professor J.M. Rozwadowski, who was then highly respected in the world of Indo-European studies. In the letters we can also find a considerable amount of the author’s reflections on various issues of Indo-European linguistics that bother him, which were later recognized as an innovative approach in the study of Baltic languages.

AbstractThis article aims to reflect on readings that Argentine lawyers made about the emergence of political institutions in some Interwar Europeans countries. The body of professors and scholars analyzed in this article delivered classes in the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires, in the National University of La Plata and in the National University of Córdoba. Through an unexplored corpus of sources, such as the Journal of the University of Buenos Aires’ School of Law, the Annals of the University of La Plata’ School of Legal and Social Sciences and the Bulletin of the Library of Congress, the article intends to describe the existence of an academic agenda that these scholars developed during 1920 and 1940, and then, to elucidate how these intellectual interventions on the European context sought to be read with a local perspective. In the formation and translation of a scientific and legal approach, these professors assessed the necessity to adapt these new European mechanisms to the local reality and to form more complex vocabularies and concepts about the phenomena they were perceiving.

The aim of the article was to examine how the fund of these incunabula was compiled and the amount of this fund was changing, what factors influenced changes of this fund, and what is the significance of these incunabula for Lithuanian culture. At the same time it was an attempt using incunabula to show at least passingly how Lithuania looked in European political, cultural and ideological context of that time, what events or processes influenced collection accession, who and by what ties related it to other countries. Lithuania was not a desert island on an European map, withdrawn from prevalent political cultural and ideological changes, neither it was a total barren, accepting no progress or novelties. It was inquired by what ways the incunabula emerged in our country, what was the demand and what impact they made, who and why acquired them, and what marks their activity had left so that we could judge by them about their circulation in Lithuanian cultural life and contemplate what still undiscovered treasures may be hidden in them waiting for researchers attention.

Abstract:
The National Library of Jamaica, created in 1979 from the West India Reference Library (WIRL), had to define its role and functions in the light of the existence of a well developed public library system which served the entire island, as well as a university library system and a fair number of small special libraries. Staff first had to be made aware of how the newly designated library differed from the old WIRL, which although well known for its outstanding collection of ‘Westindiana’ was primarily an urban-based library. The media were used to present information on the role and functions of the new library, which would perform all the accepted fundamental functions of national libraries in developed countries, except that relating to the coverage of foreign literature; in addition it would also be involved in interlending and document supply. Jamaica is a small developing country in which the European/North American-based culture and the African-influenced folk culture coexist. The library therefore recognizes the importance of developing collections of ephemera, oral history and folklore. There is a small preservation and conservation facility. In serving as the national bibliographic centre, it produces the national bibliography and creates various other bibliographic tools of national use. As the focal point of the national information system, it has developed a national referral service to aid interlending. Current awareness services are offered to library and information professionals, there is a programme of mounting exhibitions, and strong international links are maintained. Growth and development have been severely hampered by dwindling financial resources, which have resulted in some cutbacks to services. Nevertheless, the library has firmly established itself as an important cultural institution and as a leader in Caribbean library and information work.

Internationalization is defined as a process of integrating an international, intercultural, or global dimension into the teaching and learning of education. International co-authorship in research article is one of the means of collaboration towards internationalization. This paper investigates the impact of international co-authorship in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for a specialised young university (<50 years old). The study focused on approximately 9450 articles and the citations ranging from 2012-2017. The impact due to annual article publication, annual citation count, most cited article, annual citation per article and the correlation between the publication and citation were analysed. The finding shows that faculty members of the university have been collaborated with authors from 86 countries since 1997, which dominated by Asian institutions. Amongst, top 30 countries with highest international co-authored publications were identified, which led by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, India, United Kingdom and Japan. Further in detail, annual citation per article (Cpp) showed that collaborations with European countries e.g. Spain, Netherlands, and Hungry, resulting greater mean Cpp. On the other hand, the analysis on the cumulative citation trend illustrated that the citation count is proportional to the number of articles. This study evinced that international co-authorship does show positive impacts to a STEM specialised young university.

The documents are all in Dutch and they pertain primarily to plantation affairs ol the Dutch colony of Surinam for the years 1717–1830. Due to the language barrier and the lack of a suitable inventory of the documents, little use has been made ol the papers thus far. Recently, this author has prepared a comprehensive inventory of the collection, which can be obtained from the James Ford Bell Library. The inventory is fourteen pages in length, in condensed print; and, thanks to modern computer techniques, is available in both a catalogue and a chronological listing.
