The correlation of allochthonous lithotectonic complexes of the Pacific allows to establish Early Jurassic (Sinemurian-Toarcian) anoxic event (J1-OAE) for time in the Asia-West Kamchatka region. This event is characterized by organic-riched black cherts and shales bearing pyrite that accumulated in the euxinic oceanic deep water basins of the Pacific. Later anoxic regime gradually weakened that was reflected in dominating of Midle-Upper Jurassic red gematite jaspers. J1-OAE in the Pacific was synchronous to global warming induced by planetary magmatic activity. Volcanic gases and hydroterms st

Vanadium is an important redox-sensitive trace metal for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Modern organic-rich sediments persistently contain sediment V enrichments <500 μg/g, but many ancient marine organic-rich mudrocks record enrichments >500 μg/g. Previous studies propose that ancient V enrichments of these magnitudes (“V hyper-enrichments”) were deposited from hyper-sulfidic bottom-waters with higher H2S levels (≥10 mM) than observed in modern euxinic basins. To test the importance of hyper-sulfidic conditions for generating V hyper-enrichments, we compare V concentrations with Mo

Abstract Offshore Central Sumatra Basin is an integral part of Central Sumatra Basin known for producing hydrocarbon basins. The derivation of stratigraphic study of seismic and well data is intended to improve accuracy of geological interpretation. Sequence stratigraphy studies have a significant role in exploratory studies to determine which depositional sequence can be inferred as hydrocarbon reservoir and its correlation in petroleum system. This study aims to identify biogenic gas sequential interpretation using seismic and well data of offshore Central Sumatra Basin. The procedure to ana

Expanding hypoxia in the Baltic Sea over the past century has led to the development of anoxic and sulfidic (euxinic) deep basins that are only periodically ventilated by inflows of oxygenated waters from the North Sea. In this study, we investigate the potential consequences of the expanding hypoxia for manganese (Mn) burial in the Baltic Sea using a combination of pore water and sediment analyses of dated sediment cores from eight locations. Diffusive fluxes of dissolved Mn from sediments to overlying waters at oxic, hypoxic and euxinic sites are consistent with an active release o

Debate continues over paleoenvironmental conditions that prevail during deposition of organic-carbon (C)-rich marine source rocks in foreland basins and epicontinental seas. The focus of disagreement centers largely on paleowater depth and the prevalence of anoxia/euxinia. The issues of paleodepth and water column conditions are important for prediction of lateral variations in source quality within a basin because the viability of a hydrocarbon play depends on a thorough understanding of the distribution of source rock quality and depositional environments. Reconstruction of basin-scale paleogeography and paleoenvironments in the northern Perth Basin during the Early Triassic, utilising integrated geological and organic geochemical analyses, shows the distribution of photic zone euxinia and microbial mats following the end-Permian mass extinction. Such analyses also distinguish the organic geochemical signatures of photic zone euxinia and microbial mats, identify source rock potential across the basin, and have implications for the petroleum system in both the northern Perth and Northern Carnarvon basins.

ABSTRACT The Eocene Kreyenhagen Formation is a widespread siliceous, organic-rich mudstone within the San Joaquin Basin, but it is less studied than the Monterey Formation. This study characterizes the Kreyenhagen Formation in the Kettleman area to define its vertical and lateral variability on the basis redox conditions (Mo, U, Cr), paleoproductivity (biogenic SiO2, P, Ba), and detrital input (Al2O3, TiO2) to determine the dominant environmental conditions during deposition. The Kreyenhagen Formation was correlated across 72 wells over a 4600 km2 (1776 mi2) area, which revealed an eastward th

In coastal basins separated from the White Sea due to post-glacial uplift, the spectrum of light at the boundary of the photic zone gradually shifts towards long waves: from predominantly green (in marine area and in bucket bays) to green-orange-red in lagoons, then to yellow-orange-red in meromictic lakes with fresh mixolimnion and orange-red in fresh lakes. This is due to increase of concentration of humic substances (CDOM, «yellow substance»). They attenuate short-wavelength light and reduce the photic zone. This study consists of a non-traditional molecular and stable isotope approach to analyze organic matter (soluble bitumen and produced oil/condensate) from the Montney Formation low-permeability reservoirs, with the purpose of identifying source(s) of hydrocarbons, accumulation history and post accumulation processes. The same approach bases on the distribution of compound classes such as aromatic carotenoids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), bicyclic alkanes, and oxygen-polar compounds.
