Frazier, Nathan. "Maintaining the Covenant idea : the preservation of federal theology's corporate dimensions among Scotland's eighteenth-century evangelical Presbyterians." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10318.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how Scotland's federal theology helped to perpetuate the seventeenth-century Presbyterian conception of a covenanted Church and nation among a significant portion of eighteenth-century evangelical Presbyterians. It examines how both a seventeenth-century form of federal theology and a social ethic based on Scotland's Covenants were preserved among many Scottish Presbyterians between 1690 and the 1790s, until a broader and more individualistic evangelicalism increasingly eclipsed the corporate aspects of federal theology. The thesis focuses on the experiences of the Secession and Reformed Presbyterian Churches, Presbyterian denominations which broke away from the established Church of Scotland. Chapter one traces the origins of federal theology in Scotland, and considers the Scottish covenant idea within Post-Reformation Calvinism generally, and more particularly within the Presbyterian Church of Scotland after the Revolution Settlement of 1689-90. Chapter two considers how federal theology was preserved and perpetuated among Presbyterian evangelicals after 1690, how these evangelicals continued the covenanting practice of identifying Scotland with biblical Israel, and how their longings for national revival came to hinge upon the renewal of Covenant obligations. Chapter three considers the impact of the Marrow controversy in prolonging the predominant influence of federal theology on eighteenth-century Scottish popular piety, particularly among the Secession and Reformed Presbyterians. Chapter four considers a further aspect of the Marrow controversy-that is, its emphasis on the connection between the moral law and the covenant of grace. In analyzing both the individual and corporate dimensions of federal theology, this chapter examines the thought that informed the practice of covenanting, and considers why many Secession and Reformed Presbyterians believed in the 'perpetual obligation' of Scotland's Covenants for subsequent generations. The chapter also introduces the theological criticisms that would in the course of the eighteenth-century largely undermine federal theology's corporate applications for most Presbyterians and that would greatly weaken adherence to the Covenants within the two Secession Synods (Burgher and Anti burgher). Chapter five examines the application of the covenant idea to the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper. It explores how the sacraments kept alive the social ideal of federal theology and its aspirations for national revival within the Secession and Reformed Presbyterian Churches between 1690 and the 1820s, despite the mounting theological criticisms of federal theology and covenanting. Finally, chapter six examines how federal theology's corporate aspects affected the Secession and Reformed Presbyterians' views on Church and State and the role of the civil magistrate. Consideration is given to how Scotland's changing social, political, and intellectual contexts eroded the commitments to a Covenant piety among evangelical Presbyterians, and to how this led to further schisms within the two Secession Synods at the close of the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
The American Dwight L. Moody (1837–1899) was the most famous revivalist of the late 1800s and exercised a wide and lasting influence on the Protestant world, reaching Swedes in Sweden and America. His influence was felt among Swedes despite the fact that he was of English heritage, never visited Sweden or any Scandinavian country, and never spoke a word of the Swedish language. Nevertheless, he became a “hero” revivalist among Swedish Mission Friends in Sweden and America. Moody’s early ministry was centered in Chicago, the largest urban population of Swedes in the United States. In 1867, he first came into contact with Swedish immigrants in Chicago known as Mission Friends. The church that he founded, Chicago Avenue Church, later organized a Swedish fellowship. Many Swedes who immigrated to America, a land of religious pluralism, were eager to adopt Moody’s beliefs and methods. Fredrik Franson who joined Moody’s church became a proponent of the American revivalist’s beliefs and methods, spreading them in America, Sweden and other countries. E. A. Skogsbergh, a pioneer of the Mission Covenant in America, adopted Moody’s preaching style so much that he became known as “the Swedish Moody.” News of Moody’s large revival campaigns in Great Britain from 1873–1875 traveled quickly to Sweden, making “Mr. Moody” a household name in homes of many Mission Friends. Moody’s sermons published in Sweden were distributed in books, newspapers, and colporteur tracts, and led to the spread of Sweden’s “Moody fever” from 1875–1880. P. P. Waldenström cited Moody as an example of evangelical cooperation in events leading to the founding of Svenska Missionsförbundet (Swedish Mission Covenant). Songs of Moody’s musical partner, Ira D. Sankey, were translated into Swedish by Theodor Truvé and Erik Nyström and sung in homes and mission houses. Moody’s influence extended even to Sweden’s Archbishop Nathan Söderblom who during his college years attended Moody’s student conference at Northfield, Massachusetts. As Mission Friends adopted Moody’s alliance ideal, beliefs, and methods, their religious identity shifted in the direction of Moody’s new American evangelicalism.

Abstract:
In May 1856 the EFS (the Swedish Evangelical Mission Society), influenced by the new evangelism-movement, was established as an “internal mission” within the Church of Sweden. During the same period the “new evangelism” revival movement established regional organizations in order to coordinate the movement in different parts of the country. These regional organizations consisted of the movement’s local mission societies in a province or part of a province of Sweden. This study will focus on democracy and theological identity in the EFS through an analysis of how the regional organizations acted, what role they played, how the EFS was influenced by them and how the EFS decided to establish its own regional organization. One result of the earlier tensions between the regional mission organizations and the EFS was the establishment of the independent organizations Mission Covenant Church of Sweden (Svenska Missionsförbundet) (1878-) and Mission Society of Bible faithful Friends (Missionssällskapet Bibeltrogna Vänner) (1911-). This investigation looks into 17 of 36 regional mission organizations that existed. The time frame of the investigation is from the establishment of the EFS in 1856 to the establishment of the regional structure of the EFS in 1922. The EFS changed over time. The change of society and wishes from the movement’s local mission societies and regional mission organizations were agents in this transformation. An important result of this research is that this transformation of the EFS proceeded at a slow pace and with the preservation of the EFS’s theological identity.

West Lake Town has the largest number of temples in Taiwan. It consists eight different models of temples in the vicinity of 300 meters. Research and study through historical and geographical review as well as religious organization and fieldwork observation, reflect the gradual built up and constant interaction of religious beliefs and ritual practice in the West Lake downstream area. There are 20 Buddhism and Taoism temples on the entire West Lake region, together with 193 Earth Temples and 3 other temples by the name of Mother of Stone. Obviously, the entire area of West Lake Township is densely covered by temples either opened to the public or those private owned. Despite the firm and concentrated religious organizations which include Buddhism and Taoism temples in this region, the establishment of Christian church in Aberdeen street seems to be unusual. The West Lake Hakka village consists a population of only 11,800 people. In 1988, there is a group of missionary came to this area to spread the gospel of Christianity. They took this opportunity to forward resources and help to the needy family and elderly people by short-term mission, medical treatment, children and youth activities, care centre and evangelical event. With the faith in God, the missionary trust that God is able "to make ways in barren land , to excavate rivers in the desert". After 25 years of the establishment of the church on ground , currently more than 30 people are involved in the Eucharistic celebration . This project involves discovering how Christianity is established in West Lake Town. Based on the “ religious belief in marginal region” , to explore the impact and cultural shock against Christian Church. Nevertheless, to study the interaction and relationship of Christianity with the local community too.

The research object of this thesis is Gethsemane Evangelical Covenant Church in Taichung City, discussing its establishment, development and current situation, and focusing on the hymns sung in the Sunday worship, analyzing and summarizing its musical characteristics. Evangelical Covenant Church is one of the denominations of Christianity, founded by the Lutheran Church of Sweden in Chicago, USA in 1885. In 1952, the American Evangelical Covenant Church sent the missionaries, including Rev. Edward Nelson, to Taiwan and set up Evangelical Covenant Church from the north to the south. In 1965, Chinese Evangelical Covenant Church was founded to take charge of the overall planning and holy work. There are currently 52 Evangelical Covenant Churches in Taiwan. Gethsemane Evangelical Covenant Church was formerly Beitun Evangelical Covenant Church in Taichung City. It was established on January 5, 1992. The founder was pastor Lin Shu-Jan. In 1995, the Church was moved to the Gethsemane Prayer Garden in Tanzi District, Taichung City. Consequently, it was renamed Gethsemane Evangelical Covenant Church in 1996. Nowadays, there are about 300 gathers. Pastor Lin Shu-Jan was graduated from the music department of the church, majoring in vocal music, so she attaches great importance to the music activities and music education of the church. The church maintains the tradition of singing traditional hymns and adopts modern praise poetry, making the traditional and modern popular music styles coexist in this church. The basic content of the thesis is divided as follows. Chapter One “Introduction” describes the study’s motivation, purpose, noun definition, object, scope, method and literature discussion. Chapter Two “Overview the Christianity and sacred music in Taiwan” explores the development of various Christian denominations after they were introduced into Taiwan, and discusses the doctrines, development and current situation of Evangelical Covenant Church, as well as the liturgy and music views. Chapter Three “Gethsemane Evangelical Covenant Church and its music related organizations” introduces the history and development of the church, founding pastor, mission statement and organization, music ministry, children's Sunday school, Vietnam ministry, and music course for outreach ministry. Chapter Four “The current worship and hymns of Gethsemane Evangelical Covenant Church” scrutinizes the routine worship, religious festival activities and special gatherings, and records the process and poetry. Chapter Five “The sacred music and music characteristics of the Sunday worship” discusses the main hymns sung by the church in the Sunday worship, and analyzes traditional hymns and modern praise poetry. Chapter Six “Conclusion” summarizes the findings of the research.

Abstract:
From within the field of cybernetics, a sub-discipline of Practical Theology, the fear for roles of leadership in pastoral ministry is examined empirically, through interviewing pastors of the Covenant of Free Evangelical Churches in Germany. The specific fears pastors experience when leading congregations, as well as the causes and effects of these fears, are examined from relevant sources of literature. The classification of fear and defense mechanisms, as well as system-specific and individual-specific triggers, are also discussed. For the empirical part, experienced pastors of larger Free Evangelical Churches were interviewed and data was analyzed according to the Grounded Theory method. Power and fear are identified as factors which can lead to conflict and power struggles and to overworked or ill pastors. Seen as taboo topics, pastors tend to ignore these issues. The study shows that the fear for leadership, although repressed, is a reality in the lives of pastors.
