Abstract:
The policy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon concerning polygamy is one of tolerance for polygynous husbands and their plural wives who live in areas untouched by the gospel. To those who live where the gospel has been preached, polygamy is a roadblock to baptism or, for those already baptized, to holy communion. The enforcement of this policy has created painful stress in Cameroonian Christian homes, including the Dowayo community, where the author has lived. As polygamy is a respected form of marriage in the African tradition, the question must be asked: Is monogamy the only mar

Abstract:Many early records in West Africa arise from missionary accounts. While they may contain rich ethnographic data, this detail should be approached only after analysis and consideration of the authors of the sources in question. In early Sierra Leone, important data was recorded on behalf of the English evangelical Church Missionary Society, but the missionaries reporting on the ground comprised an insufficiently studied group of German-speaking Pietist Lutherans originating from central and northern Europe. This article analyzes the authors of this information in order to approach thei

This article investigates the land claim of the Barokologadi of Melorane, with their long history of disadvantages in the land of their forefathers. The sources of such disadvantages are traceable way back to tribal wars (known as “difaqane”) in South Africa. At first, people were forced to retreat temporarily to a safer site when the wars were in progress. On their return, the Hermannsburg missionaries came to serve in Melorane, benefiting from the land provided by the Kgosi. Later the government of the time expropriated that land. What was the significance of this land? The experience of Mel

This dissertation reflects on the problem of the Evangelical Lutheran church in Southern Africa. In my deliberations I have indicated that, there is a gap that needs to be closed, since the Evangelical Lutheran missionaries have left the Country. When (ELCSA) Evangelical Lutheran church in Southern Africa, took over the church leadership in 1972. We thought that, the local church leadership was matured enough, to lead the church and confront the challenges of the day. On my assessment and research, I have discovered that, the problems within the Evangelical Lutheran church are growing day by d

The East India Company was the exclusive vehicle for bringing Anglicanism to India until the nineteenth century. The company appointed some 500–600 chaplains in this period, ministering initially only to British employees on its voyages and in its factories, though some chaplains and company officials were mission-minded. In the eighteenth century, some Indian and mixed-race employees joined the Church. Militarization of the company at this time considerably increased these numbers, in the form of the children of British soldiers and Indian and mixed-race women. In 1813, the episcopate and an
