This article represents the first instalment of a two-part study on the relationship between media education and the new evangelization. The author puts forward a claim that pursuing the new evangelization in the Church demands the media education of the evangelizers and their cooperation with leaders in media education. Proving this thesis advances via three stages: (1) Outlining selected components of the media context of the new evangelization, in light of selected theses from the Church Magisterium; (2) Discussing selected challenges for both media education and the new evangelization; and

The new evangelization is a concrete task, precisely described in the documents and teaching of the Church. Its characteristic features include: a new context in which the Gospel is proclaimed, a new recipient of this message, a new enthusiasm, new methods, new means of expression, as well as a new keryx and a new content, which is the kerygma sensu stricto. The new evangelization is one of the three types of evangelization in addition to the mission ad gentes and the ordinary evangelization.

The history of evangelization in Peru, which started at the very onset of the 16th century is connected with the presence of the missionaries of the Franciscan Order, who played a major role in the building of Church structures on the territory of the former Inca empire. Evangelism is one of the key factors of church growth. A church’s recognition of the importance of evangelization always brings about an impact on the growth of a church; to its life and works. Accordingly, churches who recognize evangelization as crucial to their growth would consequently transform it into their personal, communal, and institutional priorities: Evangelization would be addressed seriously; all resources would be directed towards it; and all approaches, strategies, methods, and various types and scope of techniques would be employed to draw people to Christ. This chapter begins with a brief institutional history of FOCUS and then examines the longer historical trajectories behind the group. This pre-history of FOCUS traces twinned fears—a fear of “secular” US culture and a fear of “cultural” Catholicism—through five shifts in US Catholic history during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These shifts are postconciliar expansions of Catholic prayer, efforts to reclaim Catholic exceptionalism on Catholic college campuses, fears about Catholics on non-Catholic and public campuses, late-twentieth-century Catholics’ conflicted interactions with evangelical Protestants, and an increased strength and presence of a Catholic middle class. FOCUS and its evangelization methods were made possible by these trends.

Abstract This chapter explores the profound change in attitudes within the Catholic Church towards ecumenical and interfaith relations throughout the twentieth century. By exploring issues such as mixed marriage, relationships with other faiths, and the role of the churches in the Northern Irish troubles, it shows how a variety of methods and practices were used to improve relationships between Catholics and those of different denominations and faiths. It argues that as the century progressed, Catholic participants transformed their understanding of evangelization and the mission of the Church. Conversation and action rather than conversion became the motif of ecumenism and interfaith relationships, with action for social justice becoming the main motivation rather than reunification with Rome.

Abstract:
Abstract In Europe, and particularly in France, the word proselytism sometimes evokes suspicion, sometimes praise. Among the historic churches proselytism tends to be synonymous with infringement of freedom, while in Pentecostal and Evangelical circles it often means a positive missionary zeal, both outside and inside the churches. But behind the word itself, rivalry among Christians can awaken missionary zeal in faith communities and prompt them to analyze their missionary tactic according to the spirit and the methods of the Gospel. Many ecumenical dialogues call for an ethical and evangelical position: methods must respect individual consciences and stories; churches must try to foster positive relationships with each other and try to work together more closely. A witness that has lost the urgency of spreading the Gospel is one only in name; an evangelization that bypasses a common witness produces scandal and is thereby impoverished.

Chapter 5 explores the instrumentality of South America’s megachurches, with particular emphasis on how they have translated global Pentecostal doctrines, most notably the near-magical tropes of church growth and of prosperity gospel, to address culturally specific concerns within the larger context of late modernity and neoliberalism. The churches’ tropes of evangelization, church growth, education, improved family dynamics, and other capacity-building techniques, often framed in religious language and methods, can and often do provide believers with what I call “new technologies of self” that help them cope in a secular world that they philosophically abjure. In particular, the Brazilian megadenomination Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus uses modern R&D strategies to position itself in a given spiritual marketplace, as evinced here by a case study in the church’s work among Spanish-speaking immigrants in the United States.

Abstract:
Abstract Those words of the Apostle Paul could have served as the watchword of midnineteenthcentury American Protestant missionaries, much as ‘‘the evangelization of the world in this generation’’ rallied missionaries of a later era. The verse seemed to capture the simplicity of apostolic missionary methods and thus served as the theological basis for policies designed to promote a similar economy in modern missions. To preach the gospel pure and simple became the ideal of missionary practice, which resulted in relegating schools and the press (and medical work to the extent that it was regarded as a distinct department) to a subordinate place. Those priorities were also justified by rejecting the theory that ‘‘civilization must precede Christianization’’ in the conversion of ‘‘heathen’’ nations. Flushed with the success of evangelical revivals during the Second Great Awakening, mid-nineteenth-century Protestants proclaimed their confidence in the ability of the Holy Spirit to convert sinners without elaborate preparatory measures. Yet despite the general consensus that preaching was the ‘‘grand instrumentality’’ in missions, considerable disagreement existed over the practical implications of that ideal.

Chapter four explores the resurgence of Ocopa after the Juan Santos Atahualpa Rebellion. The relatively more pro-Franciscan atmosphere, caused in part by the ascension of Charles III to the throne, gave Ocopa enough money and resources from the Crown to restart in earnest their evangelization efforts in the Peruvian Amazon. As the chapter narrates, they were aided even more when after the expulsion of the Jesuits, Ocopa received territory and property formerly controlled by the Society. While attempts to evangelize were not always successful, with one of them ending in another rebellion, Ocopa showed itself to be one of the most powerful Franciscan institutions in the New World. Ocopa needed this influence with the rise of new ideas regarding evangelization in the frontier. The “new method,” sought to evangelize through colonization and commerce with minimal involvement from the regular clergy.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights the significance of a shift to empirical or inductive method in ecclesiology in the Catholic tradition. The inductive turn in Catholic theology is a product of the influence of liberation theological method and of the consequent attention to popular religion, itself to some extent a result of the increasing theological sophistication of the Catholic laity. An adequate ecclesiological model to correspond to the inductive turn might be found in the notion of a ‘whole-body ecclesiology’ developed initially in the United Reformed Church and the Methodist Church. In whole-body ecclesiality it is the praxis of the community that determines ecclesiology, not merely its liturgical praxis or its understanding of evangelization. The beauty of whole-body ecclesiology is that it sees ecclesiology grounded in a polity that takes modern people seriously and that is appropriately adjusted to the cultural expectations of adults. This is refreshingly important in the Catholic tradition, especially now that more attention is being given to the idea of synodality.

Abstract:
Led by their indefatigable itinerant bishop, Francis Asbury, the Methodists spread like wildfire in the early republic. Unlike Baptists, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and Unitarians, Methodists largely eschewed politics to focus on personal conversion and small group religious nurture. Methodists were the era’s most effective revivalists and also the group that best contained the fires of revival through the structures of the Methodist Discipline. Hymns played a crucial role in spreading the Methodist message and strengthening local Methodist fellowship. The Methodist avoidance of political partisanship looks commendable from a contemporary angle. Their great early success, however, included successful evangelization of southern whites; their defense of the slave system eventually led them to compromise their earlier stand against the institution.
