The application of various types of evaporation plants for concentration of solutions was analyzed. It was noted that the most promising for thickening dairy products are film-type vacuum-evaporation units with mechanical compression of secondary steam. The heating chamber of the evaporator is made in the form of a vertical shell-and-tube heat exchanger with the supply of heating steam into the intertube space and with the downward movement of product solutions in the vertical boiling tubes. Both grooved-type and copper foam-type vapor chambers are explored and investigated. The overall performance of vapor chamber depends on both axial and spread thermal resistance mutually. The copper foam-type vapor chambers achieved the lowest axial thermal resistance less than 0.2 K/W. The grooved-type sample presented the lowest spread thermal resistance, indicating better temperature uniformity. The visual experiment demonstrated that the evaporating surface of the copper-foam vapor chamber was dominated by the thin film evaporation mechanism at low charging ratio while dominated by the pul

Abstract:
Coatings of uniform thickness distribution are required for many applications of thin films. Deposition from a point evaporation source onto a flat substrate will produce a nonuniform film because of distance and angle variations between the source and various points on the substrate. Several methods are commonly used to improve the thickness uniformity of thin film coatings. Examples are:1 (a) an off axis position of evaporation source to a rotating substrate, (b) large area evaporation sources, (c) planetary rotation of the substrate, (d) simultaneous rotation and wobble of a substrate, and

We present detailed data on the performance of microstructured geometries for use in the evaporator section of a vapor chamber heat pipe. The central innovation of the geometries is their hierarchical structure, involving the use of large microchannels in order to reduce liquid flow drag while fabricating microscale pin fin arrays whose small pores increase capillary suction. The overall conductance in such a geometry is dependent on the extent of thin liquid film (thickness ∼few microns), which is manipulated by increasing the surface area-to-volume ratio through the use of microstructuring.

Abstract Opposed-piston two-stroke engines (OP2S) have demonstrated high thermodynamic efficiencies due to reduced heat losses and high volume-to-surface area ratios. This leads to remarkable advantages over four-stroke conventional diesel engines, as well as superior combustion characteristics. Therefore, combining this concept with renewable fuels and advanced technologies, such as pre-chamber, can be a route to high-efficiency, carbon-neutral powertrains. The narrow-throat KAUST pre-chamber was chosen for initial assessment, due to its advantage of being a drop-in concept, which lowers the

Field and laboratory studies of insulating properties of mulches show that the changes they produce on the heat balance and the evaporation depend not only on the intrinsic characteristics of the material but also on the structure of air flow in boundary layer. Field measurements of the radiation balance of corn residue showed a decrease of reflectivity from 0.2 to 0.17 from fall to spring. The aerodynamic properties of the atmospheric surface layer were turbulent, with typical roughness length of 12 to 24 mm. Evaporation from corn residue covered soils in climate chambers simulating the diurn

Abstract:
Background Transplanting vegetable seedlings to final spacing in the greenhouse is common practice. At the time of transplanting, the transpiring leaf area is a small fraction of the ground area and its cooling effect is rather limited. A preliminary modeling study suggested that if water supply from root to canopy is not limiting, a sparse crop could maintain about the same canopy temperature as a mature crop, at the expense of a considerably higher transpiration flux per leaf (and root) area. The objectives of this project were (1) to test the predictions of the model, (2) to select suitable
