Montinaro, Federico. "Etudes sur l'évergétisme impérial à Byzance." Paris, EPHE, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013EPHE4015.
Full textByzantine Imperial “euergetism” is seen as an intervention in the ordinary administration, often solicited by a petition, in favour of an individual or a moral person, by means of a formal act comparable to a donation. The phenomenon is studied in its broad manifestation, encompassing the action space left by modern conceptions to the ruler’s executive power within the self-moving machine of the State. The present work intends to bring a fresh perspective to the study of Byzantine Imperial euergetism, traditionally limited to its opposition to private euergetism. Only a selection of representative dossiers of the early period (4th-9th centuries) is presented here. The goal is not to provide an impressionistic portrait of Byzantine imperial euergetisme, but a methodological introduction to its study, as each dossier raises urgent questions relating to the authenticity, date and edition of the original documents. From the rise of Christendom to the settlement of the Slavs in the Balkans and the Arab conquest and further to Byzantium’s overtures towards the West reunified under the Carolingians, the imperial action is seen to focus on ever new and modern goals. The institutions, the ceremonial and the forms of privilege characteristic of later Byzantium are thus observed in their formative period

Full textThis doctoral thesis examines the modalities of organizing and financing the contests (agônes) taking place in the city of Athens in Hellenistic and Imperial periods (from 320 BC until the middle of the 3rd century AD). It consists of a comprehensive corpus gathering all the available evidence (mostly inscriptions), with a French translation and a specific commentary (Volume I) ; a historical and analytic synthesis on the topic as a whole (Volume II) ; and appendixes and illustrations (Volume III).This study first aims at a definition of the institutions Athenians chose to create at the head of the civic contests. It mostly deals with agonothesia, a civic office created at the beginning of the Hellenistic period and was maintained until the Roman Empire. We have defined the fields of expertise and of actions of the Athenian agonothetes and their evolutions, paying a specific attention to both the history of this office and of the city. A similar inquiry has been carried on about athlothesia, a magistracy concerned only with Panathenaia, and choregia, which was recreated in the 1st century AD (both of them being well less known than agonothesia). The tasks implied by these offices, often overlooked, reveal a very important personal involvement from the office-holders.Contrary to what is generally assumed, the agonothetes did not fund the contests exclusively from their own pockets, as a close examination shows. At least until the Imperial period, the city continued to provide most of the money needed. Finally, a social study investigates on who were the Athenian agonothetes and which milieu they were coming from ; it scrutinizes the importance of agonothesia in a public career, and the perception of this office by the average fellow-citizens. Agonothesia usually brought popularity to its holder, and quite often motivated public honors from the city. This thesis is a monography on the organization of Athenian games throughout six centuries, which allows a study on the long term, in a coherent space, geographically and politically. It shows the importance of the agonistic life in Athens, notably from institutionnal, cultural, economical and political points of view

Full textThe ambition that leads this thesis is as original as fascinating: analyzing the roleof the social organization of the Gabonese sport in the context of a developing country, themode of expression of the local people in the colonial period, and the element of integrationin the concert of nations after the independences. This research, in general, seeks tocomprehend sport organizations in Gabon. It is all about understanding the implication andthe impact of sport federations in Gabon from its independence (1960) to now. A trip in thepast reveals us that sport federations are separated from the traditional culture and modernculture. Therefore, we can see why they are out of touch with the current economic and socioculturalneeds of the moment. As we travel back in time, the purpose of this thesis ismultidisciplinary and comparative, based on the methods of the sociology of sport. It seeks todecrypt historical, social, political, economic and institutional conditions; and the logic of thepresent actors, so to understand the consequences that follow, and are testimonies of a uniqueorganization a francophone area (Gabon, Cameroon, and Senegal). This thesis informs aboutthe sport policies. Who organizes? How? In whose interest? These principal questions lead usto the overall problematic: Why sport organizations in Gabon favor more imported models oforganization. In more detail, how the transposition of the French model influences sportpolicies in Gabon; and how does it interact with the local particularities. Far from being aGabonese specificity solely, the colonial input remains a substantial propriety in youngAfrican states

Full textBeneath the mask of a benefactor who speaks well of his duties, and behind the appearance of serenity, are hidden the passions and conflicts of a private gentleman who must overcome his elders in order to achieve the status of a man and a writer. The Letters of Pliny the Younger thus become a remarkably constructed piece of theatre, where the scene-setter goes first and then gives his protagonists their cues. To penetrate the secret of the structure of the Letters it is necessary to look at more than one interpretation of the letter-writer, including some psychoanalytical aspects

Full textThis dissertation addresses the problem of the transition from euergetism to Christian charity. The approach focuses on gifts to communities in Late Antique North Africa from the third century to the sixth century. The study uses epigraphical and literary documents and includes anthropological perspectives on gift-giving. During Late Antiquity, euergetism (public benefaction) changes and disappears slowly. According to most current theories, euergetism would have been replaced by a new form of generosity, based on 'Christian charity'. Progressively converted to Christianity, the Romano‑Africans would have given up classical civic generosity, turning instead to the Christian communities. This dissertation studies the discourse and practice of gift-giving and challenges the idea of a transition from euergetism to charity, showing that both types of gifts coexisted in early Late Antiquity. This theory clarifies the chronology of Late Antique generosity and analyzes the expression 'Christian euergetism'. Finally, the study examines the uses of benefaction and shows that gift-giving strengthens social bonds while simultaneously generating tension

Full textThe Hellenistic period is the time when the aspect of the cities of Ionia and Caria is changing gradually. In almost each city, an amount of new public buildings progressively shaping a new urban landscape that looks like a mirror of the city that created it. It is this unprecedented transformation of urban centers during the Hellenistic period that this thesis studies, with attention to the cities of Ionia and Caria in all their diversity. We aim at making sense of the changes in these two regions, which experienced hellenisation and urbanisation early ; they are also characterized by interactions between cities and Hellenistic kings. This study suggests ways of understanding civic societies through the city. We are looking at t the most remarkable features of the city : its public buildings . In the first part devoted to urban fortifications, buildings housing political activities , and areas of cultural life , public monuments are mentioned as spaces of civic life , and we search for the reason why many new buildings were built. Then, the study describes how urban space becomes a place of truly urban life, with a landscape, facilities and a specific spatial organization. In a third section, we show how the cities’ economic prosperity is reflected in stone buildings – some of them housing economic activities – reflects the will of cities to develop and oversee economic activities and the wealth of the poleis. This also helps explain a sustained construction activity made possible by the existence of abundant and varied resources available to cities. Finally, the reflection deals with political and social aspects of the evolution of urban space. This last part is placed in a broader historical perspective, that of the evolution of the Hellenistic city

Full textWhat does honorific representation stand for? Starting from this apparently simple question, the present study explores the many aspects of the habit, beginning in the 4th century B.C. and developing through the Hellenistic period, of granting the benefactors a representation of themselves. Based on the honorific decrees and the archaeological evidence, the analysis is primarily material. Thus, the expectations and constraints guiding the choice of a medium, of a material and of a place of erection are first examined. In the case of a statue, its size, the type of its base and the way it is fixed are thoroughly studied. But with their erection, the life of the representations just begins: a few chapters are devoted to their cleaning and also to their mutilation, destruction and reuse. Iconography is the second main topic of the study. Through a description of the remaining works of art, a portrait of the ideal city reflected by the honorific representation is drawn, from the victorious generals to the women. The limits of the genre are also explored, through a study of the representations of heroes and kings, but also of children. Both material and iconographic studies support the historical analysis. An introductory focus on the origins of the honorific representation allows a determination of the specific aspects of public representation. Keeping those in mind as a reference, the analysis turns then to the less studied private honorific and commemorative representations. This large scope exploration leads finally to an examination of the social and political role of the honorific representation and of its evolution through the late Hellenistic period

Full textThe Vieil-Évreux site (Eure) shows an exceptional organisation : public buildings, which are grouped in the centre of the site, are surrounded by empty spaces covering a large area (190 ha), which are encircled by the settlement. Bacause of these specific features, the site can be compared to others complexes of the Tres Galliae – referred to by the expression “great sanctuary” – characterised by an association of momunements (at least a temple, a thearter and baths) ; these sites have been considered cut off from any dwellings for a long time. However, the recent discovery of residential quarters around the monuments calls into question the nature and the functions of these sites within the civitas. Based on the study of Vieil-Évreux and others “great sanctuaries”, this work aimed to characterise this settlement : it is distinguished by a notable expansion ; by the existence of numerous buildings showing forms and functions, interpreted as modest or rich dwellings ; by the existence of an important craft industry. This settlement appears after the Roman Conquest and expands from the end of the 1st to the 4th century. These results allow the interpretation of these sites as urban areas. These sites are located at a strategic place within the territory : this location explains, beyond the existence of a major civic sanctuary, the development of dwellings with several forms and functions. The importance of the temple within the civitas also explains the euergetic expenses shown by these sites, which are demonstrated, from the 2nd century, by the creation of monumental complexes around which the settlement extends, which give their original organisation to the sites
Lamare, Nicolas. "Les fontaines monumentales en Afrique romaine." Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040017.
Full textThis thesis deals with monumental fountains or nymphaea in the Roman North Africa provinces from the 1st to the 4th century CE. We have made up a catalogue of the monuments and inscriptions, composed from bibliographical and archaeological sources compiled on-site. We first sum up the history of research on hydraulics in ancient North Africa and then we study in detail the technical and architectural aspects of monumental fountains. We offer a synthesis on building techniques and hydraulic system as well as architectural and ornamental reconstruction with the help of literary and iconographic sources. Avoiding to establish a typology, we contextualise the fountains both within the city and the hydraulic network. Thus we put forward the insertion of fountains in the city and their link with the founding of a new water supply or town-planning programmes. These observations make possible a study of how the fountains were spread out in the urban space and to what extent it had a decorative and functional impact. By studying inscriptions, we may better understand how euergetism worked, just as the behaviour of cities and notables faced with these monuments. We may also go back to questions of vocabulary which imply to think about the appellation of fountains and their religious function

Full textThe monographic study of the macellum of Djemila (Cuicul) comes to complete the short series of macella excavated and published in the roman world. For the moment, only macella Belo, Saint-Bertrand de Comminges, Cordoue, Wroxeter and Pouzzoles were the object of a detailed study. Built during the reign of emperor Antoninus Pius, the food market of Djemila presents an excellent state of preservation and a big epigraphic wealth. My study includes the building as architectural entity, but i widened it to the all monumental complex, to understand better its implantation in the town planning of the city, the reasons for its closeness with the forum and its precise function. Our researches allowed to make a detailed description and surveys of the remains of the macellum and to treat, by an architectural and stylistic study, all the structures in position but also membra disjecta. They also allowed me to propose architectural restitution, illustrated by representations of the building in plan and elevation, as well as computer modeling. We also studied the implemented techniques of construction. Finally, we dealt the question of the personality of his benefactor and the role of generosity in the financing the construction of the market

Full textFrom the 1830s to the 1940s, staying in one’s country house residence for half of the year at the gates of Lyon is a continuation, during the modern era, of the already existing seasonal migration for the Lyon elite and a large part of the bourgeoisie of the Rhone city, whether living on their private incomes, their skills or their industrial activities. At first, however, the thesis highlights breaks from the previous era: architectural models become richer and more complex, the domains tend to abandon their productive logic while the spring and summer residential area is confronted with rampant urbanization, resulting in the disappearance of summer homes, their size reduction or adaptations within a chic residential suburb in the making. The study then raises the question of the interest for the bourgeoisie to own a summer home among various rural domains. Close to the city and comfortable, the bourgeois country houses reinvent the aristocratic castle life making it more modern and becoming the rural setting of a sociability that is less formal than in the city. Finally, the thesis examines the impact of the summer home owners in their commune of residence in land and property terms as well as economic, political and religious terms. If the large land ownership of the bourgeoisie leads to dispossession of villagers and a rise in land prices, the issue of the bourgeois parasitism is counterbalanced by the number of jobs created locally and the stimulation of crafts and local trade. The hypothetical bourgeois nuisance also seems to be contradicted by the vote in favour of the bourgeois in some villages, even if they do not win unanimous support everywhere
