In the individual grammars of time-bound speakers, as well as in the historical transmission of a language, prosodic and morphological domains are forced to interact. This research focuses, in particular, on stress, and its instantiation in different domains of the morphological structure. It asks what factors are involved in prioritising one system – morphology or stress assignment – over the other and how radical the consequences of this may be on the overall structure of the language. The data comes from two typologically distinct languages: Mapudungun (previously 'Araucanian'), a polysynth

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the most controversial phonological problem in Old Japanese, the phonetic and phonological status of two types of syllables, found in written texts, known as the 'A/B-type' contrast. Previous approaches have centred around the phonetic evaluation of Middle Chinese characters, and examination of Pre-Old Japanese diphthongal sources reconstructed through the morpho-phonemic analysis of Old Japanese. All of these approaches have various limitations, since Old Japanese does not provide sufficient evidence to support the results thus gained. Recently attempts have been made t

2013 - 2014<br>The present study examines the development of multi-word verbs (MWVs), namely phrasal verbs, prepositional verbs and phrasal-prepositional verbs in the Late Modern English (LModE) period over the years from 1750 to 1850. The main aim is to investigate the changes which occurred in the spoken language drawing on a selection of texts taken from the Proceedings of the Old Bailey, London's Central Criminal Court. From a diachronic perspective, the emergence and the loss of these verbs can be attributed to the grammaticalization and/or lexicalization of the non-verbal element as we

Although Egyptologists in the past had a greater interest in the treasures that accompanied the dead, there has now been a shift in focus on the actual ancient Egyptians themselves and their ways of life. Recognizing the health and disease status of ancient Egyptians has become particularly important. The Old Age Pension (OAP) program for elderly South Africans puts a significant cash transfer in the hands of many poor households. This dissertation investigates its impact on labor force participation and consumption of selected household items. In the first half of the dissertation, we take advantage of a policy reform that lowered men's OAP eligibility age from 65 to 60 for men to match that of women for estimation identification. Using the General Household Survey data, we first demonstrate that both men and women respond to the eligibility age by dropping from labor force participation a

The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of enclosures on total factor productivity in the northeast of Scotland at the end of the eighteenth century. Rent, wage and price data for 49 parishes has been gathered from John Sinclair's twenty volume Statistical Account(1791-1798). Each of the parishes is characterised by the state of enclosure, land classification, market access, and whether or not lime, marl and turnip husbandry were in use.
