Abstract:
Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) causes the most contagious transboundary disease of animals, affecting both wild and domestic cloven-hoofed animals. Similarly to other RNA viruses, FMDV is highly variable as a result of the inherent low fidelity of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. The accumulation of this variability and relatedness between FMDV sequences was used to provide evidence for modes of transmission (fomite) as well as a constant clock rate across two FMDV topotypes (~8.70 x 10-3 substitutions/site/year), during the 1967 UK FMD epidemic, using full genome consensus sequenc

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) (Family: Picornaviridae, Genus: Aphthovirus) is a significant global pathogen with extensive economic impact. The reservoir of diversity contained within this mutant spectrum allows the virus to adapt rapidly to new environments. Food webs – networks of predator-prey interactions – are of fundamental importance to the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of biodiversity. The stability and functioning of food webs can be dependent on their 'vertical' structure: the distribution of species' trophic positions, the length of food chains and the prevalence of omnivory. Food web interactions such as predation, resource competition and intraguild predation can be potent agents of natural selection, driving evolutionary responses that feed back to reconfigure the food web. Abstract:
Grounded in an evolutionary approach to environmental sustainability, this thesis adds an understanding of the dynamics of the greening of the economy, particularly highlighting the neglected demand side aspect of the greening of markets. Since the emergence of green food markets in the 1980s and 1990s, this study investigates the role of retail groups in the development of the green food market in Denmark and Brazil. Accordingly, it investigates the rate and the direction of the greening of this process in those markets as well as the convergence and the impact of retailers\' strategizing in

Abstract:
There is often an assumption that there is a right and a wrong way for consumers to behave. For example, with regard to eating, people should make food choices based on maximizing vitamins and minerals and not consuming more calories than one expends in a day. Likewise, it is assumed that buying products to conspicuously signal a message to another is wasteful and maladaptive. The research in this thesis challenges these assumptions and argues that these behaviours can be both adaptive and maladaptive depending on one’s environmental conditions. In this thesis, I describe three experiments tha

Abstract:
Salt sensitivity of blood pressure (BP) is an independent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality risk factor, present in both hypertensive and normotensive population. Better understanding of this phenotype in healthy individuals may lead to more effective prevention of hypertension and CVD. Salt sensitivity is genetically determined and it may affect the relationship between salt taste perception and salt intake. This thesis, for the first time, comprehensively explored the associations between genetics, salt sensitivity of BP, salt taste perception and salt intake as well as the potentia

Abstract:
Currently, the most effective treatment for severe obesity resulting in a large and marked weight loss is bariatric surgery (BS) (Courcoulas, AP et al. 2013).However, several studies have shown that weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery can vary widely among patients and a sizable portion of them present a relative poor weight loss response (Christou, NV et al. 2006;Courcoulas, AP et al. 2013). The reasons why patients do not achieve success in terms of weight loss after a bariatric surgery are still largely unknown. Recent evidence has shown an association between weight loss- resistan

We explored using de-oiled algal biomass (algal cake) as a low-value substrate for production of lactic acid in fermentations with Lactobacillus casei, and strategies for increasing lactic acid production at low pH. L. casei 12A algal cake (AC) fermentations showed carbohydrate and amino acid availability limit growth and lactic acid production. These nutritional requirements were effectively addressed with enzymatic hydrolysis of the AC using α-amylase, cellulase, and pepsin. Producing 0.075 g lactic acid per g AC from AC digested with all three enzymes. We explored heterologous expression of
