We show that allowing communication can increase optimal choices and efficiency in a multitask, incomplete contracting, principal–agent setting. We study two simple communication protocols, one allowing for one or more requests on non-contractible choices, and the other allowing for a request, promise and ex post payment. The protocol where principals are asked to communicate requests to the agent regarding non-contractible choices promotes better learning of optimal strategies on the part of the principals, but shows no tendency for coordination to superior outcomes. This paper studies optimal communication flows in organizations. A production process can be coordinated ex ante, by letting agents stick to a prespecified plan of action. Alternatively, agents may adapt to task-specific shocks, in which case tasks must be coordinated ex post, using communication. When attention is scarce, an optimal organization coordinates only a few tasks ex post. Those tasks are higher performing, more adaptive to the environment, and influential. Hence, scarce attention requires setting priorities, not just local optimization. Our results provide microfoundations for a ce

The other involves emotions induced by others' expressed disapproval. The presence of ex post communication strongly fosters pro-social behavior. Abstract:
Standards have become critical to information and communication technologies (ICTs) as they become complex and pervasive. We propose a process theory framework to explain anticipatory standardizing outcomes post hoc when the standardizing process is viewed as networks of events. Anticipatory standards define future capabilities for ICT ex ante in contrast to ex post standardizing existing practices or capabilities through de facto standardization in the market. The theoretical framework offers the following: a) a lexicon in the form of the ontology and typology of standardizing events; b) a grammar, or a set of combination rules, for standardizing events to build process representations; c) an analysis and appreciation of contexts in which standardizing unfolds; and d) logic yielding theoretical explanations of standardizing outcomes based on the analysis of process representations. We show how the framework can help analyze standardization data as networks of events as well as explain standardizing outcomes. We illustrate the plausibility of the approach by applying it to wireless standardization to explain standardizing outcomes.

Each of the tools reflects different aspects of responsible conduct; expressed in economic, environmental, social and temporal & spatial terms. They represent a partial foundation for ex ante assessment and ex post evaluation and, as such, grounds for providing information and communicating. Abstract:
This article introduces a formal evaluation methodology for IT investments specifically designed to cope with the needs of port industry. Port industry is a service-oriented industry and, as such, is characterised by the intangible nature of benefits. The goal of this paper is to develop a methodology for the evaluation of container terminal related electronic services that incorporates both strategic and analytic evaluation techniques for performing both ex-ante and ex-post evaluation. Port industry is an interesting case because, although it is characterised by intense competition and ports have to concentrate in satisfying the customers’ needs by proving value added services with the use of advanced information and communication technologies (ICT), it is also characterised by a lag in adopting new technologies and techniques compared to other industries. In this paper, the authors present an analysis of the industry’s specific needs and proposes a dynamic evaluation methodology specifically designed to satisfy them.

Producing parallel narratives of the fall of Kaifeng in 1127 and the sack of Constantinople in 1204, Ye Mengde 葉夢得 (1077–1148) and Niketas Choniates (c.1155–1217) chronicled the collapse of these imperial centres in an effort to reconstruct post-conquest political communities in exile. While Ye and Niketas were deploying different conceptual frameworks of political authority and literary blueprints for memoirs, their writings documented personal displacement as well as cultural and political trauma writ large. By recording and commemorating the chain of events that culminated in the collapse of the Northern Song and Byzantine Empires, both authors were converting oral anecdotes into cultural memory. Ye and Niketas devised ex post facto explanations for the fall of Kaifeng and Constantinople as the consequence of the actions of failed monarchs and corrupt courtiers — and, to a lesser extent — the forces of divine punishment.

This chapter aims to provide fresh insights into entrepreneurship innovation to the retirees of the Nigerian military from the perspective of an ex-serviceman (a retired military person). The chapter's methodology focused on the articulation of experiences and meanings, which is guided by the events in the author's life, recounting life circumstances and events located in a specific time and space. Consequently, the chapter examines the entrepreneurial opportunities for retired Nigerian military personnel vis-a-vis the challenges faced by veterans when engaging in entrepreneurship. The chapter also discusses the entrepreneurship issues to be considered before becoming an entrepreneur. The chapter further postulates on information and communication technology (ICT) skills as key requirements for those who want to become an entrepreneur in post-service life. Finally, it is suggested that prior knowledge on innovative entrepreneurship before the start of a business results in successful sustained retirement income.

Abstract:
This chapter is dedicated to the guiding concept of the book and its grounding in social theory. Technocratic internationalism, it is suggested, should be understood with the help of modernization theory, in general, and Max Weber’s account of the expert bureaucracy, in particular. Weber’s theory of universal rationalization is associated with the advance of explicit rules, formal procedure, technical expertise, and disciplined communication in governing modern societies. These elements come together in Weber’s concept of the modern expert bureaucracy that is technically superior to pre-modern forms of public administration. The historical evidence shows that Weber feared bureaucratic modernization, because it eroded individual liberty and creativity. These internal tensions and ambiguities of technocratic modernity are a recurring theme in this book. The second part of the chapter explores the construction of an intellectual tradition. It clarifies how technocratic internationalism is a concept introduced ex post for analytical purposes: a heuristic tool that renders a strand of international theory visible, simply by giving it a name and suggesting that writings from different historical periods have enough traits in common to form such a tradition. The chapter also elaborates on the selection of authors and writings included in this volume.

This chapter deals with four issues. First it will briefly examine three sectors of the economy that are wholly or partly excluded from EU competition law, namely nuclear energy, military equipment and agriculture; the special regime that once existed for coal and steel products under the former European Coal and Steel Community (‘the ECSC’) Treaty is also mentioned in passing. Secondly, it will explain the application of the EU competition rules apply to the transport sector. Thirdly, the chapter will consider the specific circumstances of four so-called ‘regulated industries’, electronic communications, post, energy and water, where a combination of legislation, regulation and competition law seek to promote competition. Last, but by no means least, the current debate concerning digital platforms is discussed where it is likely that ex ante regulatory rules will be introduced, both in the EU and the UK, to address concerns about anti-competitive conduct and a tendency towards the monopolisation of markets.

Abstract:
The myth-histories scientists tell tend to be collages of heroes pasted together to evoke an irrefutable scientific foundation of progress. Students consuming these narratives are not introduced to a realistic portrayal of scientific practice; they are fed an idealized form of science based on tropes that are effectively impossible to follow. How does this affect our students? We assume it gives them positive, ideal role models, but is this so? Studies show that students’ motivation is not homogeneous. Some may feel disenfranchised and unmotivated by myth-historical reconstructions of people from circumstances wildly different from their own. Chapter 4 examines one of the clearest examples of this idealization, myth-historical narratives constructed in communicating the discovery of gravitational waves in 2015–16. These narratives cast Albert Einstein as a clear and unambiguous scientific hero. They also engage in an ex post facto transformation of physicist Joseph Weber from scientific pariah to hero.
