Proclus. Proclus: Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus Volume 4: Book 3, Part 2: Proclus on the World Soul. Edited by Dirk Baltzly. Cambridge University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9780511691812.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present volume Proclus describes the 'creation' of the soul that animates the entire universe. This is not a literal creation, for Proclus argues that Plato means only to convey the eternal dependence of the World Soul upon higher causes. In his exegesis of Plato's text, Proclus addresses a range of issues in Pythagorean harmonic theory, as well as questions about the way in which the World Soul knows both forms and the visible reality that comprises its body. This part of Proclus' Commentary is particularly responsive to the interpretive tradition that precedes it. As a result, this volume is especially significant for the study of the Platonic tradition from the earliest commentators onwards.

Abstract:
The theme of eschatology is not usually identified by exegetes as particularly emphasized in the Gospel of Mary, though it should be. The two primary teachings, the dialogue between the Saviour and his disciples and Mary’s recollection of her vision, are predominantly eschatological in nature, the former being concerned with the earthly realm and the latter the heavenly. The earthly realm is the created cosmos made of ‘matter’, destined for dissolution owing to its inherent instability, whereas the heavenly is the home of the ‘Soul’, the goal of its perilous post-mortem journey past hostile spiritual powers that seek to bar its way. Despite obvious differences with the Olivet Discourse of Matthew 24 and parallels, there are multiple points of convergence with the eschatological teachings within the canonical gospels. Starting from the Gospel of Mary, this chapter explores connections between eschatological thinking on both sides of the canonical boundary.

Image, Isabella. Hilary’s Commentary on Psalm 118. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198806646.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the textual background to Hilary’s commentary on Psalm 118. It is known from Jerome that this commentary was a loose translation of Origen’s commentary on Psalm 118, so three key texts derived from Origen’s work are compared: (a) Hilary’s own commentary; (b) Ambrose’s commentary on Ps. 118, also known to rely heavily on Origen; (c) the fragments of Origen’s text preserved in the Palestinian Catena. An example of the comparison is given in Appendix 2. Ambrose’s text is shown to be independent from Hilary’s. By comparing these texts, it can be shown that Hilary remains fairly close to his source in terms of arrangement and exegesis. However, he also corrects or omits any theology he feels is inappropriate, for example rejecting Origen’s apparent idea of souls falling into bodies.
