Salter, Martin C. "An exegetical definition of missional ethics." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2017. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=233895.

Full text
Abstract:
Missional ethics is a relatively new and unexplored theme emerging within missiology. Thus far the meaning of the term, 'missional ethics,' has been assumed rather than explicitly defined. This thesis provides an exegetical definition of missional ethics arrived at by exploring key biblical texts relevant to the theme—Deuteronomy, the Major Prophets and Luke-Acts. A canonical, narratival, missional, and performative hermeneutic was employed in the exploration of the nature, content, purpose, and development of missional ethics within the biblical texts. The exegesis demonstrated that missional ethics is an inherently community based project with emphases in justice, charity, and worship. Within the wider missiological discussion, this definition provides challenges and proposals to contemporary theory and praxis. The most significant contribution of this thesis is the proposal of a definition of missional ethics as follows: Missional ethics refers to the ways in which the believing community's behaviour—in particular their love for God, and love for neighbour, expressed in the exercise of justice, charity, and worship—bears witness, in the imitatio Dei, to the nature and character of God before a watching world.

Full text
Abstract:
The biblical narrative of Jephthah and his daughter (Judges 11:31-40) recounts the story of the judge, Jephthah, who vowed to sacrifice to God whatever came to greet him upon his return from a victorious battle with Ammon, and whose daughter became the victim of this vow. The goal of this thesis is to examine a sample of the Jewish responses to this biblical narrative from ancient and medieval times through the twentieth century. The analysis demonstrates the difficult nature of this text, its linguistic and conceptual ambiguities, the solutions to a well-defined series of problems proposed by more than two dozen interpreters, and their failure to deal with most of the historical and ethical problems that emerge from the story.

Brannon, M. Jeff. "'Heavenlies' in Ephesians : a lexical, exegetical, and conceptual analysis." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4501.

Full text
Abstract:
In Ephesians, readers of the New Testament encounter one of the most intriguing phrases throughout the whole of Scripture. The expression “in the heavenlies” appears five times in the letter and is not found in any other place in the New Testament. While there is nothing inherently intriguing about the words έυ τοις έπουραυίοις, the phrase proves to be of interest to Biblical scholars because of the various contexts in which it is utilized. The two appearances which have caused the most consternation among New Testament scholars are the session of earthly believers έυ τοις έπουραυίοις in 2:6 and the presence of the spiritual forces of evil evn έυ τοις έπουραυίοις in 6:12. The seeming implausibility of these two statements has led commentators to interpret this peculiar expression in a variety of ways. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to perform a lexical, exegetical, and conceptual analysis of the expression έυ τοις έπουραυίοις in Ephesians. Within this broader purpose, this thesis: 1) argues against the prevailing interpretation of “the heavenlies” propagated by Hugo Odeberg and subsequently adopted by Michael E. McGough in his unpublished ThD dissertation “An Investigation of vEpoura, nioj in Ephesians” 2) builds upon and augments A. T. Lincoln’s research from his article “A Re-Examination of ‘the Heavenlies’ in Ephesians” and from his monograph Paradise Now and Not Yet 3) provides in-depth examinations of three significant concepts associated with this expression, namely the redeemed on earth having a heavenly status, evil powers in heaven, and the cosmology of Ephesians. The evidence considered includes an examination of the term evpoura, nioj from Greek sources, Jewish sources, the Apostolic Fathers, and the Septuagint. In addition, the New Testament uses of evpoura, nioj outside of Ephesians are analyzed through a brief exegesis of the passages in which the term appears. The exegetical chapters within the letter of Ephesians itself will include comparisons with the Old Testament, the New Testament, and Second Temple Jewish texts including the Qumran manuscripts and apocalyptic literature. From my examination of the evidence, I conclude 1) that there is no basis for a distinction between the terms ouvrano,j and evpoura, nioj in Ephesians 2) that the prevailing interpretation of “the heavenlies” is both flawed and untenable 3) that Qumran and apocalyptic texts can shed light upon and assist in a proper understanding of the difficult passages in which the expression evn toi/j evpourani, oij appears. The primary contribution to the New Testament field is that this thesis represents the most comprehensive study of “the heavenlies” in Ephesians. Throughout the course of the thesis, other areas of contribution include studies of the term evpoura, nioj, a heavenly status for the redeemed on earth, evil powers in heaven, the cosmology of Ephesians, and the role of “the heavenlies” within the thought of Ephesians.

Morlan, David Scott. "Conversion in Luke and Paul : some exegetical and theological explorations." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/408/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the conversion theologies of Luke and Paul. For Luke and Paul conversion played an important role in the early Christian experience and in this dissertation we take a fresh look into how they interpreted this phenomenon. We traverse representative texts in the Lukan and Pauline corpus equipped with three theological questions. What is the change involved in conversion? Why is conversion necessary? Who is responsible for conversion? In our theological and exegetical analysis of Luke 15, Acts 2, Acts 17:16-34, Romans 2 and Romans 9-11 we answer these three theological questions, which then builds a theological profile for both Luke and Paul. These profiles provide fresh insight into the theological relationship between Luke and Paul showing significant similarities as well as sharp contrasts between them. Differences emerge concerning their understanding of repentance as well as in the correlation between conversion and creation: for Luke, conversion is the restored imago dei of the original creation while for Paul it is a fresh act by God of New Creation. Similarities surface between Luke and Paul concerning the centrality of Christology in their conversion theologies. While showing a complex relationship between human and divine agency in conversion, both Luke and Paul understand successful conversion to be impossible without the intervention of an agency outside of the pre-convert.
