Abstract:
In fact, every human being is a leader, either for himself or for others. The nature of leadership is closely related to a leader. Leadership is a trait that can influence, move or encourage others to achieve a predetermined goal. The essence of leadership in Islam leads a servant to true servitude to Allah. In Islam, a leader must be an example for his group, such as the Prophet Muhammad saw. The personality of the Prophet Muhammad saw. as a leader is exemplary because of his toughness which is not affected by the circumstances of the surrounding community which are still ignorant. This study aims to analyze the leadership style of the Prophet Muhammad that can be applied today. The data collection technique used reading and note-taking techniques and the data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive. From the results of this study, it can be explained that the leadership style of the Prophet Muhammad that can be applied today is a democratic attitude. This study concludes that the Prophet Muhammad is a role model for leaders, even today leaders should apply the leadership style of the Prophet Muhammad who is religiously democratic.

Abstract:
Leadership is a mandate and therefore, in an Islamic system, one must not demand a position. Leaders have a very important position for community groups, nation and state. A community, nation and state will not advance, safe and directed if there is no leader. Leaders become the key to success in a community, leaders who are able to provide a sense of security, peace, and able to realize the wishes of their people, that is what is considered a successful leader. Successful leaders are leaders who are loved by those they lead, so their minds are always supported, their orders are always followed and the people defend them without being asked first. The leadership figure that approaches this explanation is the leadership of the Prophet and his companions (Khulafaur Rasyidin). Abu Bakr was chosen to be the caliph to replace leadership after the Messenger of Allah was a blessing in itself, and this kind of privilege was given to him by Allah. Basically the companions of the Prophet are people who will inherit Islamic da'wah / treatise for all mankind, as well as being a leader for themselves with their exemplary example and the Islamic faith in carrying out the shari'ah of Allah Almighty and His Rasul, both through the book of Allah and the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah. In this paper, it will be discussed how the leadership progress in the Khulafaur Rosyidin period, as long as a leader, the problems faced as well as the progress that has been achieved in fighting for and expanding the Islamic territory, so that Islam can be glorious at that time.

Abstract:
Business schools strive to develop leadership excellence in their students. In this essay, we suggest that educators should find ways to help students develop and deepen leader character, a fundamental component of exemplary leadership. Frequently, business school students have preconceived ideas of leadership, often neglecting leader character. We argue that educators can and should teach students that leader character is pivotal to leadership excellence and that they should actively develop students’ leader character. The foundational learning theories of Piaget and Kolb provide a useful framework to help achieve the development of leader character. We propose that leader character development arises from using accommodation learning strategies of crucible experiences, paired with assimilation learning methods of critical reflection, and further developed through equilibrium learning strategies where students can incorporate new information and work toward their personal character growth. While numerous teaching approaches can be used, we describe an experiential course, codesigned with members of the Canadian Forces, using these learning strategies to foster leader character development.

Correa-Cespedes, Blanca. "Authentic Servant-Leadership Exemplified by Early Childhood Educator David Lawrence Jr.: A Case Study." FIU Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2453.

Full text
Abstract:
Advocacy and leadership style are essential concepts in education. This qualitative case study was undertaken to demonstrate how Robert K. Greenleaf’s servant-leadership framework could be a useful framework to adopt by educational leaders and child advocates. Servant-leadership identifies the needs of others as a primary goal of leadership. The study contributes to understanding the value of exemplary servant-leadership and advocacy in public education as demonstrated by David Lawrence Jr. The researcher addressed questions regarding how Lawrence embodies servant-leadership traits and explored how a servant-leader has been positively influencing early childhood public educational policy in Florida to benefit all children. There were 16 interviews conducted with individuals from four interest groups in Florida: business leaders, political leaders, local South Florida leaders and educational leaders. In addition, data were gathered by observing and interviewing Lawrence. His speeches and other archival documents were also analyzed. The findings illustrated the ten traits of the servant-leadership framework and identified five additional traits modeled by Lawrence that have contributed to his influence on public educational policy. A paradigm shift from authoritarian leadership to an authentic servant-leadership style that advocates for young children and promotes the importance of early childhood educational policy. The dichotomy examined throughout this research focused on servant-leadership and advocacy that is instrumental to make a difference in education as an educational leader navigates through political agendas. Lawrence leads a “Children’s Movement” in Florida that includes an ongoing bi-partisan individuals movement that has changed early childhood education in Florida. The findings of this investigation validate that servant-leadership framework could influence the transformation of public education.

Breslin, Randal Scott. "Exploring the professional journeys of exemplary expatriate field leaders in the international aid sector : a collective case study." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25495.

Full text
Abstract:
The international aid sector is a multi-billion dollar industry that has continued to grow in size, influence and complexity since the 1970s. The stakeholders are globalised and diverse, from elite UN politicians in New York and Geneva to malnourished infants in Somalia. This study attempts to focus on the professional development of one category of player in this multifaceted sector, that is the expatriate field leader employed international non-government organisations (INGO) and responsible for the implementation of projects in a cross-cultural environment. The study found that relationships, results, and grit were three foundational traits of exemplary expatriate filed leaders in the international aid sector. This collective case study takes a grounded theory approach to explore the professional journeys of 12 exemplary expatriate field practitioners in the international aid sector who work in Central Asia, Middle East, and North Africa with ten different INGOs and have an average of 12.5 years of field experience. The participants were nominated for the study by their supervisors or peers as being exemplary field leaders. The study purposes to gain insight into the professional journey of exemplary field leaders by examining their work-life experience from age 18 until present. Biographic narrative interviews were conducted and supplemented with professional development timelines to create the initial data set. The study provides insight into the processes of professional identity formation of expatriate aid workers and identifies seven events that shape their professional self-identity. These experiences consist of a variety of reflected appraisals and intrinsic rewards that validated or changed how the research participants saw themselves. Participants credited good relationships and seeing the results of their work as what keeps them going in spite of difficulties. On the other hand, the most difficult work experiences of the aid workers were not carjacking, riots, dust, heat, bugs, strange food, or low funding but relational conflicts and the grief associated with relational disappointments. Interpersonal relationships were core to both the best experiences and the most difficult experiences of the research participants. Gritty appears to be a better construct to describe exemplary field leaders than resilient. Grit is a trait defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals. The research participants demonstrated grit in many situations, not least of which was in their commitment to learn the local language in-situ of crisis-affected people. The research participants believed that learning local languages was a key to establish and maintain meaningful relationships and cooperation with local people. The study also includes a discussion of an apparent incongruity in the international aid sector. On one hand the sector promotes the necessity of humanitarian professionals to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with crisis-affected people, but survey evidence suggests most workers in the humanitarian sector put a low priority on learning the languages of crisis-affected people while others do not have sufficient opportunity to learn the local languages because of the well-entrenched tradition of short-term employment contracts of 1-12 months and the practice of churning (rotating experienced staff from project to project). It appears that the current system of doing business in the humanitarian sector may actually obstruct professional competence and contribute to failed outcomes.

With the continued growth of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students, it is necessary for teachers to be intentional about serving students whose backgrounds are assets but nonetheless different from the dominant culture and language in American society. Because most research on teaching practices has focused on the academic development of children in preschool, this study tries to fill a gap in the literature by examining teaching practices that respond to and affirm cultural diversity. After conducting interviews and observations in three Head Start classrooms, four core teacher beliefs (reciprocal relationships with family, importance of home language, social emotional emphasis, and inclusion of culture) were identified across the sites; these beliefs impacted how teachers created a multicultural space and tailored instruction for students. The findings contribute to the field by providing insight for how teachers can continue to foster inclusive classrooms that value and celebrate children’s unique identities

Abstract:

This dissertation is a qualitative inquiry that explores and pinpoints those exact communication strategies in leadership communication that enable higher educational leaders in sustaining their positions. This study was initiated with the intent to lay out the foundational literature on the content of communication that is utilized by higher educational leaders on a daily basis to achieve their departmental and institutional goals. For this purpose, communication was the core idea of focus, pertaining to which, verbal and non-verbal skills of leaders were explored. From the notion of communication and upon further investigation of communication literature, theory and leadership studies posit persuasion and trust as two prime components of leadership communication, without which, a leader’s functionality would be greatly mitigated. Therefore, the three main constructs that this study examined are communication, persuasion, and trust. This study was strongly driven by the motive to explore the utilization of those specific communication strategies that enhance persuasion and trust among higher education leaders and their staff and colleagues. The method of inquiry was in-depth, face-to-face interview protocol that enabled the researcher to formulate carefully worded interview protocol questions that were meticulously sequenced and worded to extract the lived communicative experiences of its participants. From this point, thematic coding was utilized to code the responses of the participants and draw out the common themes that emerged across all interviews. The results of this research are comprehensive and contribute to the existing base on communication literature. This research brought forth the pivotal role of relational communication in facilitating leadership, the need for all leaders to make conscious efforts in choosing their verbal and non-verbal communication strategies meticulously in their daily professional lives, and the indispensable role of persuasion and trust in dynamic leadership communication.

Rammiki, Rorisang Agnes. "Exploring exemplary physics teachers' instructional practices supporting learner access to school physics content." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/19998.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis submitted to the School of Education, Faculty of Humanities, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2015
This study explored exemplary physics teachers’ instructional practices which place learners at the centre of activities in terms of their abilities and competencies. It was carried out at two senior secondary schools in Botswana at a period when enrolment of learners had been increased. The increase in learner enrolment brought in new groups of learners whose performance in science subject was generally low as evidenced by national examination results. The low national examination results indicated a need for making school science content more accessible for these learners which is a direct responsibility of teachers (Mullis, Martin, & Foy, 2005; Shulman, 1987). Teachers’ instructional practices had been characterised by excessive use of chalkboard and teacher-talk which is considered less effective in making school science content accessible for learners of wide ability range (Botswana, 1993; Prophet, 1990b). Science education research on instructional practices put emphasis on active participation of learners as a way of improving learner access to school science content (Tiberghein, 2000). Learner participation in instructional practices draws largely from Vygotsky’s social constructivist perspective (Vygotsky, 2012) which assumes that knowledge must first appear at the social level between people before it can be constructed at an individual level (Minick, 2005). Ideas presented at a social level must be in a form that can be understood by learners in order to construct them as their own (Driver & Oldham, 1986). The teacher plays an important role in making the subject content accessible for learners especially when they take into account learners’ characteristics (Shulman, 1987). The study used qualitative design to explore exemplary teachers’ instructional practices in order to understand how they support learners in making sense of school physics content (Gay & Airasian, 2000). A case study approach was used because of limited information on exemplary instructional practices of physics teachers in Botswana (Merriam, 1998). Purposive sampling was used to select two teachers who were identified by the researcher for their exceptional instructional skills in engaging learners (Merriam, 2009; Patton, 2002). The intention for employing purposive sampling was that the teachers’ exceptional practices would provide information on instructional activities that could serve as exemplars for physics teachers’ instructional support for learners (Kuhn, 1970). Lesson observation was used to collect data on at least seven lessons for each teacher; interviews with teachers and their respective learners were also used to substantiate inferences because of their potential for providing information-rich data. Video and audio recorders were used to capture data because it was necessary to capture activities as close to their occurrence in natural settings as possible; also because these could be replayed to develop deep understandings of the interactions for making and validating inferences. Inductive analysis was used to explore instances of teacher’s instructional support for learners from transcripts. The findings included teachers’ engagement of learners in new physics concepts which were structured on learners’ knowledge from prior instruction and from events in their lives. The teachers created environments which were sensitive to learners’ needs and competencies for accessing new physics concepts and skills. They used discussion and written work to provide opportunity for learners to demonstrate their understanding and to give feedback. The teachers’ feedback included performance expectations set by Botswana Examination Council as a standard for learners’ understanding of concepts and skills. The findings provide a potential basis for instructional practices in school physics in Botswana. These findings have implications for developing teacher’s instructional practices in school physics and for initial teacher education.

Salazar, Meagan Joy. "How current school leaders make sense of inclusive education policies : a qualitative exploration of graduates of a “high-quality” principal preparation program." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/28740.

Full text
Abstract:
With increasing demand for school accountability following the NCLB Act of 2001, school leaders have a greater responsibility to students with disabilities than ever tinclude special education leadership due to the leadership imperative to meet the needs of all students (Lashley, 2007; Yell, 2012). Little attention, however, has been paid to special education and special education law in leadership preparation programs (Cusson, 2010; Pazey & Cole, 2013), leaving school leaders inadequately prepared to serve all students. The purpose of this study was to explore how six current school leaders who are graduates of a university-based “high-quality” principalship program created an inclusive school culture. Guided by the theoretical framework of sensemaking (Weick, 1995) and a phenomenological approach (Creswell, 2007; Patton, 1990), this study examined the ways in which six school leaders used what they know about special education and special education law to develop their understanding of such policy and sought to gain insight into why they made sense of and constructed their interpretations of the policy in a particular way. Of particular interest was their perceived roles in working with special education staff, and the effects their construction and application of inclusive education policy had on students with disabilities. The findings of this study suggest that these six school leaders’ sensemaking of inclusive education policy was influenced by three factors: knowledge, experiences, and personal contexts. Each of these three factors were situated within the context of the school leaders’ constructed identities. If the school leader perceived his or her role as a leader for special education, he or she was more inclined to seek special education and special education law content knowledge, ensure their campus staff attained and maintained the capacity to meet the needs of all students, and continuously searched for specific experiences and opportunities that they could make available to themselves and others that required them to grapple with difficult issues related to special education. In doing so, they were able to effect deeper-level change on their school campuses.

Abstract:
Colin L. Powell spent much of his remarkable career in advisory, not command, positions. By demonstrating the qualities of an exemplary follower, a leader presents an appropriate and realistic role model for everybody within his organization. Most people in positions of organizational authority must assume complicated dual roles as follower and leader. Rare is the leadership position that is not simultaneously a position of followership. Too often, the role of follower is seen as inherently submissive, dependent, passive, and unimaginative. On the contrary, the best and most effective followers share many characteristics with successful leaders, including competence, commitment, composure, moral conduct, and independent critical judgment.

Abstract:
Ignoring the driver’s torque command can be beneficial for fuel economy, especially if it leads to extended residence time at efficient operating conditions. We answered this question for a particular engine, which allows mode switches between spark ignition (SI) and homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion. When operating such a multimode combustion engine it might be required to defer a load command outside the feasible regime of one combustion mode until a mode switch is accomplished. The resulting delays in engine torque response might negatively affect vehicle performance and drivability. In this paper a longitudinal vehicle model is presented, which incorporates dynamics associated with SI/HCCI mode switching. Two exemplary supervisory control strategies were evaluated in terms of fuel economy and torque behavior. It was seen that the duration of a mode switch may be short enough to avoid substantial impairment in torque response. This in turn would lead to the opportunity of purposefully ignoring the driver command. Thereby, the residence time in the beneficial HCCI combustion regime is prolonged and fuel-expensive mode switching avoided. The result is a trade-off between torque deviation and improvements in fuel economy. Finally, based on this trade-off the supervisory control strategy relying on a short-term prediction of engine load was seen to achieve similar fuel economy with slightly improved torque response than a strategy without prediction.

Abstract:
The need for the best material behavior at any location within high performance component systems leads to diversified material combinations. One example is the material mixture in today’s vehicles: steel, aluminum, magnesium, plastics, fibers, glass and other solids. These combinations need new or modified fastening technologies, because traditional techniques like welding or bolting up to now are mainly focused on single material joints. Besides this, the loading level during operation of the components increases continuously, so the behavior of the involved fastening systems under operating conditions also has to be known. Fastening systems with light metals show a significant thermal induced change of clamping/preload. This paper gives an overview with some optimized exemplary fastening systems from the automotive sector which could be partly transferred to other industry branches. The paper also emphasizes that various details of designing fastening systems are decisive for reliability and stability.

Abstract:
Abstract In order to increase precision and productivity in production systems, active components are increasingly being used which operate on the basis of conventional principles such as electrodynamics, hydraulics or pneumatics. An increasing performance range leads to larger demands in terms of function and energy density, which conventional actuators can only fulfil to a limited extent. Thermal shape memory alloys are the basis of an actuator technology that can overcome these challenges, but have recently been researched and used mainly as wire actuators. The associated drawbacks regarding realizable forces and large installation space may be the reasons why shape memory alloys have not yet been established in the field of production technology. This paper presents an alternative form of using shape memory alloys, which makes it possible to realize significantly higher energy densities. Starting from specific use cases, the basic design is discussed and a developed design methodology for such actuators is presented. This methodology is validated by measurements. Finally, an exemplary actuator concept is presented.

Abstract:
The necessity of providing reduced models of dynamical systems is growing continuously. Model-based control and model-based design are exemplary fields of applications. In this contribution, the reduction of a controlled drivetrain of a rolling mill using the method of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition is investigated, where the specific choice of the control law leads to equations of motion with time-periodic coefficients. Depending on amplitudes and frequency parameters of the time-periodic coefficients, artificial damping is introduced, referred to as parametric control. The maximum damping effect depends on these parameters in a nonlinear manner, as it is shown by means of a stability-parameter from Floquet theory. The reduced model set-up approximates the stability-parameter of the full model in an appropriate way within a wide range of the parameters. A measure based on the linear time-invariant system is developed that gives insight into the effect of the simulated timeseries on the properties of the reduced model.

Abstract:
On-chip electrophoresis is a growing field with increasing chemical and bioanalytical applications such as genomics and proteomics. The use of multicomponent and heterogeneous electrolyte configurations can often lead to complex flow behavior. In this work, we present a high-fidelity, low computational cost electrokinetic flow model for the modeling and optimization of electrophoretic separations. The model adopts a depth-averaged approach that captures convective-dispersion processes, and includes important physical effects such as electrical body force and fully nonlinear multi-species electromigration. The corresponding numerical scheme is based on a finite volume approach using a monotonic upstream-centered construction (MUSCL). The numerical model can simulate arbitrary electrolyte and sample configurations, and capture the complex evolution of sharp, narrow sample peaks and high pre-concentration (stacking) ratios. Exemplary results showing both field amplified sample stacking and isotachophoresis processes are presented. The development of such models is critical to the efficient design and optimization of on-chip CE methods and devices.

Full text
Abstract:
Squalls have been present in the environmental specifications for floating units in West Africa for the last couple of years. However it appears that such phenomena tend to be the designing factor for mooring systems of deepwater FPSO’s (in spread or turret configuration) and offloading buoys. At that stage, due to the lack of proper modelling/characterisation, squalls tend to be represented for design purposes by on-site recorded time series of varying wind velocity and associated relative headings applied from any direction. This leads to rapid changes in offsets and loads in the mooring lines induced by the transient response of the vessel to sudden load increase generated by such squall signal. Through diverse exemplary simplified calculations, this paper illustrates the influence of the consideration of squalls in the design process, together with the present shortcomings in the modelling process, either in terms of extreme conditions, or in terms of operating conditions, knowing that such events are difficult to forecast. In addition the effect of tugs, and associated operating limitations are also discussed. Areas needing further investigation are finally identified.

Abstract:
Historically, power die like MOSFETs have been packaged on lead frames using wire bonds as interconnects. To facilitate current carrying requirements, thick wires and sometimes also clips were used, to handle the total electrical and thermal conductivity requirements. As die are being thinned, it has become possible to take advantage of new electrical designs and locate source and drain on opposite sides of the die. Such die can now be easily packaged by embedding the power die in organic substrates. The die is bonded on a Cu pad and covered by prepreg and copper foil during lamination. Source, drain and gate pads are accessed from the top side with laser vias and filled with plated copper. Finally, the top side is patterned and protected with solder mask. An exemplary process flow will be described here. Electrical and thermal modeling data will be presented to demonstrate the performance efficiency while reducing the form factor in accordance with the miniaturization of mobile applications. Aside from single die packages, more advanced packages can be built containing multiple power die and controller die. The basic process flow remains the same but does require some adaptation. If so desired, additional components may be assembled on top of the embedded die package leading to further integration and miniaturization.

Abstract:
Although mass production parts look the same, every manufactured part is unique, at least on a closer inspection. The reason for this is that every manufactured part is inevitable subjected to different scattering influencing factors and variation in the manufacturing process, such as varying temperatures or tool wear. All these factors inevitably lead to parts, which deviate from their ideal shape. Products, which are built from these deviation-afflicted parts consequently show deviations from their ideal properties. To ensure that every single product nevertheless meets its technical requirements, it is necessary to specify the permitted deviations. Furthermore it is necessary to estimate the consequences of the permitted deviations, which is done via tolerance analysis. During this process the imperfect parts are assembled virtually and the effects of the geometric deviations can be calculated during a variation simulation. Since the tolerance analysis is to enable engineers to identify weak points in an early design stage it is important to know which contribution every single tolerance has on a certain quality-relevant characteristic, to restrict or increase the correct tolerances. In this paper two different approaches are shown and compared to represent the statistical behavior and the strongly connected sensitivity analyses. In particular a newly developed approach, which is based on fuzzy arithmetic, is compared to the established EFAST-method. The exemplary application of both methods and the comparison of the results are illustrated on a case study.

Abstract:
Rapid innovations in technology lead customers to frequently upgrade to new products. Their current products, now obsolete in terms of technology, aesthetic features and performance, leave behind an ecological footprint that is harmful to the environment. Product take-back systems and remanufacturing methods that promise to minimize the environmental impact are gaining attention among researchers and practitioners in the manufacturing field. A common objective is to find the best option for end of lifecycle (EOL) decisions on whether a product and the components comprising it should be reused, recycled, remanufactured, or disposed. These decisions must entail proper analysis while taking into account customer preferences, which can vary considerably from customer to customer. Mass customization, considered a plausible solution for this problem, is not viable model for many products. In this paper, therefore, we approach this problem from a preference aggregation perspective, particularly, the benevolent dictator model. Using this understanding of aggregated preferences, we address the take-back and possible remanufacturing of products. Once collected, it is questioned whether efficiency enhancing new technology or features should be added in take-back products to improve its performance or add any value. If that is the case, will these remanufactured products, with new technology or features, help in cost-effectively reducing the lifecycle environmental impact of the product, compared to a remanufactured product with original specifications? A home HVAC system was selected to exemplify the design and reuse problem, and show the benefit of favoring environmentally conscious customers in lifecycle decision making.

Abstract:
Platooning, or controlled management of vehicle formation, enables multiple vehicles equipped with adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems to drive behind one another with a specified inter-vehicle distance, acting together as one unit. Typically, delays in throttle and brake response, as well as in vehicle computer systems, are unpredictable and time-varying, and can ultimately lead to performance degradation and system destabilization. The platoon control system must thus be designed in a way so as to mitigate the effects delays can impose on system stability. This paper presents a novel robust multi-vehicle platoon control algorithm that compensates for time-varying delays under the integral quadratic constraint (IQC) framework. All vehicle models are assumed to incorporate heterogeneous time-varying actuation/input delays. The simulation results exemplify the controller’s effectiveness in maintaining overall stability and platooning performance in the presence of time-varying input delays.

Full text
Abstract:
Participating in the exemplar landscapes of the Developing and Promoting Market-Based Agroforestry and Forest Rehabilitation Options for Northwest Vietnam project has had positive impacts on ethnic women, such as increasing their networks and decision-making and public speaking skills. However, the rate of female farmers accessing and using project extension material or participating in project nurseries and applying agroforestry techniques was limited. This requires understanding of the real needs and interests grounded in the socio-cultural contexts of the ethnic groups living in the Northern Mountain Region in Viet Nam, who have unique social and cultural norms and values. The case studies show that agricultural activities are highly gendered: men and women play specific roles and have different, particular constraints and interests. Women are highly constrained by gender norms, access to resources, decision-making power and a prevailing positive-feedback loop of time poverty, especially in the Hmong community. A holistic, timesaving approach to addressing women’s daily activities could reduce the effects of time poverty and increase project participation. As women were highly willing to share project information, the project’s impacts would be more successful with increased participation by women through utilizing informal channels of communication and knowledge dissemination. Extension material designed for ethnic women should have less text and more visuals. Access to information is a critical constraint that perpetuates the norm that men are decision-makers, thereby, enhancing their perceived ownership, whereas women have limited access to information and so leave final decisions to men, especially in Hmong families. Older Hmong women have a Vietnamese (Kinh) language barrier, which further prevents them from accessing the project’s material. Further research into an adaptive framework that can be applied in a variety of contexts is recommended. This framework should prioritize time-saving activities for women and include material highlighting key considerations to maintain accountability among the project’s support staff.

Hicks, Jacqueline. Environmental Challenges of Digital Transformation in Developing Countries. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.107.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid review synthesises the literature on the environmental risks of four different aspects of digital transformation in developing countries: ICT adoption, digitally-enabled energy efficiency, ride-hailing apps, and big data use. The overall message which runs throughout the diverse literatures and results is that it is not digital technologies that create environmental risks or opportunities, but how they are used. Efficiency gains derived from digital transformation may yet lead developing countries down existing unsustainable development paths if not accompanied by careful, context-dependent policy. For policy-makers seeking to mitigate environmental risks, this means putting the context of digital use at the centre of analysis rather than the technologies themselves. However, the research literature covers more specific aspects of digital transformation. In practice, this report defines digital transformation as: ICT adoption, digitally-enabled energy efficiency, ride-hailing apps, and big data use. These topics were chosen after an initial scoping review of available literature, and because they exemplify a range of the different types of potential digital effects. The literature on the environmental risks of digital transformation is huge and conflicting. This is problematic because it could be easy to cherry pick preferred research results. Several studies noted that there is less research on developing countries than developed countries, but the evidence base is still large. As an evidence review, this report focused on the academic literature, but there is also a large grey literature. Some of the literature has a gender aspect, not covered in this report.
