Abstract:
Leadership is a mandate and therefore, in an Islamic system, one must not demand a position. Leaders have a very important position for community groups, nation and state. A community, nation and state will not advance, safe and directed if there is no leader. Leaders become the key to success in a community, leaders who are able to provide a sense of security, peace, and able to realize the wishes of their people, that is what is considered a successful leader. Successful leaders are leaders who are loved by those they lead, so their minds are always supported, their orders are always followed and the people defend them without being asked first. The leadership figure that approaches this explanation is the leadership of the Prophet and his companions (Khulafaur Rasyidin). Abu Bakr was chosen to be the caliph to replace leadership after the Messenger of Allah was a blessing in itself, and this kind of privilege was given to him by Allah. Basically the companions of the Prophet are people who will inherit Islamic da'wah / treatise for all mankind, as well as being a leader for themselves with their exemplary example and the Islamic faith in carrying out the shari'ah of Allah Almighty and His Rasul, both through the book of Allah and the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah. In this paper, it will be discussed how the leadership progress in the Khulafaur Rosyidin period, as long as a leader, the problems faced as well as the progress that has been achieved in fighting for and expanding the Islamic territory, so that Islam can be glorious at that time.

Abstract:
Business schools strive to develop leadership excellence in their students. In this essay, we suggest that educators should find ways to help students develop and deepen leader character, a fundamental component of exemplary leadership. Frequently, business school students have preconceived ideas of leadership, often neglecting leader character. We argue that educators can and should teach students that leader character is pivotal to leadership excellence and that they should actively develop students’ leader character. The foundational learning theories of Piaget and Kolb provide a useful framework to help achieve the development of leader character. We propose that leader character development arises from using accommodation learning strategies of crucible experiences, paired with assimilation learning methods of critical reflection, and further developed through equilibrium learning strategies where students can incorporate new information and work toward their personal character growth. While numerous teaching approaches can be used, we describe an experiential course, codesigned with members of the Canadian Forces, using these learning strategies to foster leader character development.

What characteristics constitute an exemplary leader? Let’s take a moment and reflect on dynamic leaders we have observed during our careers. What is it about them that cause us to consider them exceptional? It may have been one or more significant acts they performed, or perhaps it was an impactful discussion that left an impression on us. Fig. 1 highlights 10 characteristics of strong leaders with positive influence.1 According to a recent leadership study that surveyed Canadian urology program directors and division/ department heads, high personal integrity, as well as excellence in patient care and teaching were identified as the most important attributes for successful leadership.2 Urologists often find themselves in leadership positions, as do many physicians. In addition to being a leader in the clinical setting, many urologists achieve leadership roles in administration, education, and research. Some examples of such roles are shown in Table 1. The main objectives of this article are to gain some background information on leadership competencies and styles, and to learn about opportunities for development of leadership skills.

Abstract:
As we witness an alarming change in the delivery of healthcare worldwide, there is a need for transformational leadership that can inspire and empower healthcare professionals, and patients alike. Due to the lack of economic, infrastructural and human resources especially in developing countries, the organisation and delivery of healthcare services is even more challenging. Hence, the focus of leadership development in resource-limited environments should be to facilitate knowledge building, interprofessional collaboration, empowerment and inclusion. In this paper, we use two exemplary cases to illustrate the impact of, and the challenges facing leadership capacity building in non-Western contexts with special reference to India and Curaçao. These cases demonstrate that there is a place for validated medical leadership models in developing countries with promising outcomes for the collective health status of communities at large. Such models, however, need to be contextualised to fit the individual country's economic and sociopolitical context. Also, the stakeholders should be prepared to create healthy professional cultures that embrace respect (for self and others) and focus on effective communication practices within their local environments.

Abstract:
Modern communication has reduced the distance between people with social media like Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, WeChat, Q Zone and Google+ veritably turning the whole world into a global village. However, all the messages which spread through social media may or may not be reliable but the authenticity of the news depends on the person who imparts the message. Great orators and leaders have always used words to their advantage regardless of the medium. One of our great leaders, Mahatma Gandhi through his words and exemplary lifestyle communicated the message of Truth and Non-Violence, which became his personal emblems, that the world would later emulate. It would also henceforth make India’s identity secure particularly under the aftermath of British colonial rule. In the times of national unrest and uprisings and with such fiery leaders like Lokmanya Tilak, Gandhi was like a voice in the wilderness. But, how then did he spread his message? What was the power that made his thoughts become revolutionary?

The biblical judges are well known for their less than exemplary behaviour. In the past, these judges have been appreciated largely as examples of how a charismatic leader should not behave. This paper evaluates these judges in light of their characterisations in the book of Hebrews and in the book of Judges and suggests that our struggle with the judges parallels the contemporary integrity crisis in Christian leadership.

This paper aims to describe a design of cooperative learning models that emphasize exemplary criteria in conveying information or concepts / ideas in the classroom. In conveying information or concepts, teachers as educators and leaders must be truly prepared and know well that the examples of the concepts to be conveyed are good and true. Realizing that a teacher or leader who determines the direction is a role model, and as a role model, the people around him will follow, so as a leader must be able to give a survey and who cling to his responsibilities, is expected to be aware of his actions, behavior, ways of thinking, even the habit will be followed by many people. Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha is a leadership aspect that has a group learning leader. These aspects are capable of moving and directing group members to determine the direction and purpose of learning. This study uses descriptive, comparative and development research methods. Descriptive and comparative methods to support empirical research. With the development research method the learning environment will be developed and evaluated to test the effectiveness of the model design. Based on the testing criteria for the two mean differences are if the acquisition is p. sig. value < 0.05 then H0 is rejected. Because of the acquisition of p. sig. value = 0.00 < 0.05 so H0 is rejected, meaning that the learning outcomes of students who use Ing Ngarsa sung Tuladha's cooperative learning model are better than ordinary learning. Abstract:
Leadership is a broader definition than power because leadership is an effort to influence people, not just doing what the leader wants, but to achieve the government or organization's goals or objectives. Thus, Nawa Natya and servant leadership concepts are used as guidelines to become a good and exemplary leader. The concept of Nawa Natya and servant leadership aims to improve the quality of a leader who excels in leading a government or organization to survive and compete in the future. Based on several leadership types, the type of leadership that is autocratic and democratic is beneficial in being applied in government and organizations. The type of leadership works hard and thoroughly and can work together to advance the government and organization according to the expected goals and objectives. Nawa Natya concept is very relevant to apply when governing the kingdom. The concept of servant leadership is relevant to managing government, organization, or company. Everyone who serves is not always a subordinate or servant, but with the concept of Nawa Natya and servant leadership, everyone must have a service spirit. Moreover, being a leader, having a firm and wise attitude, and having a leadership spirit to serve to get sympathy and support from subordinates and the community. Servant leadership realizes that he is in charge of serving to bring a group to grow better than before.

Student leadership is seen to be one of the crucial issues in educational leadership field due to its impact on students, especially for the secondary and tertiary level students. Traits of student leaders are being investigated as one of the factors contributing to the effectiveness of student leadership in school. Categorised as one type of school leadership, student leadership is considered very beneficial for personal development of self-confidence and self-esteem as well as very prudent for the nation. The main purpose of this study is to investigate teachers’ perceptions on student leadership - its definition and benefits - and the shared traits possessed by student leaders. There were two theoretical frameworks used in this study. The first framework is by Northouse (2004) on Traits of a Good Leader, and the second is by Kozes and Posner (2012) on Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. This qualitative study involved eight respondents who are secondary school teachers from various schools and age groups, using convenience sampling. Semi-structured interview was used in order to gain the teachers’ perceptions. The data was analysed using descriptive thematic approach. The findings revealed that there are ten shared traits of student leaders which are closely related to Northouse’s (2004) traits on good leaders and one concluded definition of student leadership also came out as a result.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between CEO leadership behavior and the culture of the organization within the context of Indian organizations. Design/methodology/approach Two five-scale questionnaires were completed by senior executives (n=485) who have interaction with their CEO. The first instrument captured the executives’ perspective of their CEO’s leadership behavior along six dimensions (People Centric, Global Ambitions, Opportunity Sensing, Visionary, Exemplary, and Dependable). The second instrument captured the executives’ perspective of their organization’s culture along six dimensions (Results Focused, Talent Development, Employee Empowerment, Equity and Fairness, Open Communication, and Decentralization). These data were analyzed using factor analysis, correlation analysis, and least-squares regression. Findings A correlation analysis indicates that a significant relationship exists between several aspects of CEO leadership behavior and characteristics of the organizational culture. Regression analysis indicated that the overall CEO leadership behavior prominently explains (R2=0.397) the organization’s culture. Notably, two CEO dimensions, People Centricity and Global Ambition, were found to have an exceptionally high degree of association with the culture of the organization. Research limitations/implications There is consistency between findings from western academic leader-culture research and the same in the Indian work setting. Practical implications Findings of this study can serve as a guidepost for the selection of leaders in an organization. Originality/value There is a scarcity of leader-organization research involving national culture features; the Indian context is fundamental to this study and is called for by the growing presence of India-born leadership in western organizations.

With the development of teacher education MOOCs, more and more schools encourage teachers to participate in MOOC. How to improve the learning effect of teachers has practical significance. Previous researches have mainly focused on the individual teachers who participate in the study alone. Little research has been done on the learning effects of the teacher groups. In this study, we adopt ANOVA and social network to analyze the differences in learning effects between teachers who participate in learning alone and teacher groups in a teacher education MOOC, and used interview to explore the causes of the differences. Results indicated: 1) the completion rate and excellence rate of group teachers are higher than individual teachers. Among them, the leader-guided teachers have higher academic performance. 2) in the forum, group teachers are more active. Effective strategies for teachers learning include three aspects: playing the exemplary role of model teachers, teachers establish a learning community, and the school establishes a learning support mechanism.

Abstract:
In the early 1980's we set upon a quest to discover what it took to become a leader. We wanted to know the common practices of ordinary men and women when they were at their leadership best--when they were able to take people to places they had never been before. But knowing that the portrait emerging from the study of personal-best leadership experiences was only a partial picture, we also explored the expectations that the constituents have of people they would be willing to follow. Strategies, tactics, skills, and practices are empty (or worse yet, manipulative and exploitative) unless we understand the fundamental human aspirations that connect leaders and constituents. Our analysis of thousands of cases and surveys from over a dozen years of research has revealed a consistent pattern of exemplary leadership practices and fundamental constituent expectations. What we've learned from studies specifically with college student leaders over the past five years has only strengthened our fundamental appreciation that leadership is not a mysterious, mystical or etherial concept--one that is somehow beyond the scope and imagination of the vast majority of people. Leadership is certainly not conveyed in a gene, and it's most definitely not a secret code that can't be understand by ordinary folks. Our research has shown us that leadership is an observable, learnable set of practices. Indeed, the belief that leadership can't be learned is a far more powerful deterrent to development than is the nature of the leadership process itself. In this article we discuss ten lessons we've learned from thousands of ventures about what it takes to get extraordinary things done in organizations.

Abstract:
Henri Ellenberger argued that in many instances, illness serves as an integral stage in the creative process. This paper begins by contrasting the simplistic image of cause-and-effect with Ellenberger's three-part model, with illness in the middle. Then, it sets forth five different ways to construe the period of illness as a contribution to a creative process that will have begun before the illness. It concludes by introducing a familiar example from Western history of a leader whose contributions might have built upon years of exemplary preparation, but actually began in earnest only after a defining period of sudden illness.Henri Ellenberger [1] wrote an influential essay in the 1960s titled "The Concept of Creative Illness." Part of its brilliance is due to the fact that it took a relatively common model of cause-and-effect and added something to it, presenting a slightly more sophisticated model that raised interesting new questions about the relationship between illness and creativity. This paper considers the importance of studying the creative process through the lens of illness as liminality.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which Chinese classical virtues act as a restraint on consumerist hedonic values and the associated priority on profit maximisation by managers.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a literature review and adopts a reflective approach to the topic.FindingsThe paper considers how Chinese classical virtues are related to contemporary relational or indigenous values and how a social tension is created between these values and the hedonic values now present in Chinese urban society. Implications for management and management education are reviewed in the light of this tension.Practical implicationsThe social unrest created by the privatisation of SOEs can be mitigated by the promotion of management education sensitised to the cultural norms and expectations of the Chinese people in relation to the role and responsibilities of managers. The Junzi (gentleman‐leader) archetype and the virtues of ren‐yi‐li are offered as exemplary features of a management seeking to balance social responsibility with profitability.Originality/valueThe paper highlights the social turbulence created by the advent of market economics in China and the concomitant rise of consumerism and the privatisation of state‐owned enterprises.

Abstract:
In some democratic contexts, there is a strong aversion to the directive, individualistic and masculine expressions of leadership that have come to dominate the study of political leadership. Such leadership is antithetical to consensus democracies in parts of continental Europe, where the antipathy to leadership has linguistic, institutional as well as cultural dimensions. Political-administrative and socio-cultural contexts in these countries provide little room for heroic expressions of leadership. Consequently, alternative forms of leadership and associated vocabularies have developed that carry profound practical relevance but that have remained underexplored. Based on an in-depth mixed-methods study, this article presents the Dutch mayoralty as an insightful and exemplary case of what can be called ‘bridging-and-bonding leadership’; it provides a clear illustration of how understandings of democratic leadership can deviate from the dominant paradigm and of how leading in a consensus context brings about unique practical challenges for office holders. The analysis shows that the important leadership task of democratic guardianship that is performed by Dutch mayors is in danger of being overlooked by scholars of political leadership, as are consensus-oriented leadership roles in other parts of the world. For that reason, a recalibration of the leadership concept is needed, developing an increased theoretical sensitivity towards the non-decisive and process-oriented aspects of the leadership phenomenon. This article specifies how the future study of leadership, as a part of the change that is advocated, can benefit from adopting additional languages of leadership.

Abstract:
Synopsis Ian Henson was about to take the biggest financial risk of his life. He had just agreed to purchase three Booster Juice franchise stores in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Henson knew that transitioning leadership at companies was a difficult task, and he was aware that he was replacing a popular leader: Natalie Peace. Compounding the challenge ahead of Henson were two major hurdles, the first was demographic in nature: Booster Juice’s employee group was young (on average below 20 years old) and many adored Peace, he was certain that whoever replaced her would have a difficult transition. The second challenge was managing change: Henson needed to cut costs. Peace had several generous policies that Henson needed to consider altering or removing, a potentially unpopular task. Initially, this case puts students in Henson’s shoes: How should he handle the specific aspects of this leadership transition? It allows professors to examine the broader issue of managing a change process. Research methodology Data for the case were collected from various sources. Public records, historical documents, and media reports were the main source for general background information and context. Primary data were collected through a series of interviews with the present and past owners of the Booster Juice franchises discussed. Relevant courses and levels This case was developed for use in an undergraduate management course or where change management and leadership are specific modules, an organization behavior class is a good example of where the case should fit. The objective of the case is to illustrate the challenges that resulted from a change in leadership and examine how to manage the change process. The thought-provoking element in this case is the leaders involved have very different leadership styles. The authors anticipate this case would be one used early in the course, as it is concise and straightforward to read, and clearly illustrates the issues to be examined. It provides an effective tool through which to introduce students to change management and styles of leadership. The added value is that the case is based on a company built by an undergraduate student and thus students tend to be very interested in the business itself. Theoretical bases The main theoretical base for the case is based on change management and exemplary leadership. To facilitate this the authors use Kurt Lewin’s models of change, Kotter’s eight step process, specifically referring to Kotter (1995). The authors then use Kouzes & Psoner five practices of exemplary leadership, referring to Kouzes, and Posner (2003). The authors specifically reference Northouse (2010).

Abstract:
Abstract The controversy surrounding the announcement by the US Treasury, in April 2016, that the portraits of Harriet Tubman and Andrew Jackson will “share” the twenty-dollar bill-which the latter has embodied for almost a century-highlights a glaring incongruity: A formerly enslaved black woman and abolitionist leader is being placed in iconic proximity with an exemplary historical representative of the United States as a national experiment built on whiteness, slavery, and genocide. Our essay revolves around three basic questions: Why Tubman? Why Jackson? Why Now? The Treasury’s decision and its subsequent vicissitudes allow insights into the blurring of Barack Obama’s avowed “post-racialism,” which presided over the idea to redesign the currency, into the overt white supremacy and anti-black violence at the onset of the Trump regime, which has de facto frozen the implementation of the new bill. The story serves, namely, as a commentary on paradigmatic antiblackness as a force that, being constitutive of American civil society, has been fortified by the “post-racial” pretences of the Obama era. With reference to Christina Sharpe’s notion of “monstrous intimacy” and Saidiya Hartman’s theorization of “fungibility,” we argue that the twenty-dollar bill affair reflects the ways in which the interlocutory life of civil society is fortified by the continuous positioning, in popular imagination and discourse, of the black female body as inert matter in modes of appropriation, violence, and representation that sustain America’s political and libidinal economy.

Abstract:
PurposeTrust plays an important role in the organisation of healthcare services. In Norway, the establishment of mandatory municipal acute wards with 24 h inpatient services introduces a new unit into the healthcare system. This article discusses how this new health care service succeeds in building trust with patients and among healthcare workers.Design/methodology/approachThe article is an in-depth case study of a single, exemplary inter-municipal acute ward. The study draws on interviews with COPD patients, the leader and doctors at the ward. The study also includes observations of daily work at the municipal acute ward. Moreover, administrators and healthcare workers at related healthcare institutions have been interviewed. Data were analysed using a qualitative method.FindingsThe study reveals that trust is built in complex relations and that it has both individual and systemic factors. The practices employed in the daily treatment and care of patients and in encounters between health care personnel and patients are important trust-building processes; however, these processes depend on structures and routines that promote efficient and adequate inter-organisational communication and patient-oriented procedures.Practical implicationsThe study provides insight into how trust dynamics work on multiple organisational levels and how they depend on both individual and systemic factors. Additionally, the study may provide a picture of the importance of trust in organising healthcare services in the future.Originality/valueLessons regarding trust building inspired by data from a case-study care institution can be applied in different care settings and countries.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to digitalize the business processes of a regional enterprise basing on the elaborated production structure optimization model and taking into account the influence of the enterprise development factors. Statistical and economic, monographic, abstract-logical, computational-constructive and modeling methods of economic research were used in preparation of the article. The current state of the region’s development shows the need and readiness for digitalization of the agricultural enterprises. When using economic and mathematical methods to develop a digital business model in research, the problem of optimizing the production structure to maximize the financial result under given production conditions was solved. The main variables of the model are the area under crops and the number of farm animals. The constraints express the conditions for the use of resources; they are imposed on most variables and are written as inequalities. The solution to the problem was carried out to maximize the financial result from the products sale. The resulting optimal combination of production sectors of the organization will improve the production and financial performance of the enterprise as a whole. As the object of the study the agricultural leader of the region and an exemplary diversified enterprise was chosen - JSC “PZ Meliorator”, Marksovsky district, Saratov region. The digital optimization business model, taking into account the influence of organizational development factors, is not static and can be applied to any economy in the region.

Abstract:
Trade in services has made phenomenal strides in the globalisation era with the advent of a technology revolution, fragmentation in production processes and rapid digitisation. The case of India has been exemplary, as she bypasses her sluggish growth in goods exports to emerge as a world leader in commercial services. By churning out positive net exports since 2003, this trade sector has considerably eased the country’s unfavourable current-account position. Further, the relatively robust performance of the country’s service exports in the face of the Great Recession of 2008–2009 has ignited speculations over its suitability as an instrument of sustainable economic growth. Though the stupendous growth of India’s export of services is well documented, not much has been said regarding consistency in this growth. Our study identifies that against the backdrop of key macroeconomic developments, the growth performance of the country’s real export of services has undergone vivid variations. The long-term trend of these exports, though increasing, is choppy. We identify three structural regimes in the course of these exports: 1975–1993, 1994–2004 and 2005–2018. We conscientiously deduce that the phenomenal growth of real service exports that accrued in the 1990s has been slowly wearing out post 2005. The slowdown has both cyclical and structural elements to it and corresponds to the changing cyclicality of service exports, subduing demand, slowing global value chains (GVCs) and post-crisis mood of protectionism.
