Abstract:
We establish in this paper the existence of weak solutions of infinite-dimensional shift invariant stochastic differential equations driven by a Brownian term. The drift function is very general, in the sense that it is supposed to be neither small or continuous, nor Markov. On the initial law we only assume that it admits a finite specific entropy. Our result strongly improves the previous ones obtained for free dynamics with a small perturbative drift. The originality of our method leads in the use of the specific entropy as a tightness tool and on a description of such stochastic differential equation as solution of a variational problem on the path space.

Abstract:
In the first part, we introduce a new condition, called toric-additivity, on a family of abelian varieties degenerating to a semi-abelian scheme over a normal crossing divisor. The condition depends only on the Tate module TlA(Ksep) of the generic fibre, for a prime l invertible on the base. We show that toric-additivity is a sufficient condition for the existence of a Néron model if the base is a Q-scheme. In the case of the jacobian of a smooth curve with semi-stable reduction, we obtain the same result without assumptions on the base characteristic; and we show that toric-additivity is also necessary for the existence of a Néron model, when the base is a Q-scheme. In the second part, we consider the case of a family of nodal curves over a discrete valuation ring, having split singularities. We say that such a family is semi factorial if every line bundle on the generic fibre extends to a line bundle on the total space. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for semi- factoriality, in terms of combinatorics of the dual graph of the special fibre. In particular, we show that performing one blow-up with center the non regular closed points yields a semi-factorial model of the generic fibre. As an application, we extend the result of Raynaud relating Néron models of smooth curves and Picard functors of their regular models to the case of nodal curves having a semi-factorial model

Abstract:
We prove in this paper an existence result for infinite-dimensional stationary interactive Brownian diffusions. The interaction is supposed to be small in the norm ||.||∞ but otherwise is very general, being possibly non-regular and non-Markovian. Our method consists in using the characterization of such diffusions as space-time Gibbs fields so that we construct them by space-time cluster expansions in the small coupling parameter.

Abstract:
This work lies in the intersection of Mathematical Finance, Mathematical Economics and Convex Analysis. In terms of the latter, a new result (to the author’s knowledge) on a Lipschitz property of the derivatives of a convex function is presented in the first chapter. An important result on its own, it might also provide a stepping stone to an extension to Hubert spaces of Alexandrov’s theorem on the second derivatives of convex functions. The second chapter considers the problem of Adverse Selection and op timal derivative design within a Principal-Agent framework. The principal’s income is exposed to non-hedgeable risk factors arising, for instance, from weather or climate phenomena. She evaluates her risk using a coherent and law invariant risk measure and tries to minimize her exposure by selling derivative securities on her income to individual agents. The agents have mean-variance preferences with heterogeneous risk aversion coefficients. An agent’s degree of risk aversion is private information and the principal only knows their overall distribution. It is shown that the principal’s risk mini mization problem has a solution and, in terms of the pricing schedule, the latter is unique. Finding a solution to the principal’s problem requires solving a varia tional problem with global convexity constraints. In general, this cannot be done in closed form. To this end an algorithm to approximate the solutions to variational problems where set of admissible functions consists of convex functions is presented in the fourth chapter of this work. Several examples are provided.

Abstract:
This dissertation study mainly three elliptical problems: (I) a class of equations, which involves the Laplacian operator, a singular term and a nonlinearity with the critical Sobolev exponent, (II) a class of equations with double singularity, the critical Hardy-Sobolev exponent and a concave term and (III) a class of equations in divergent form, which involves a singular term, a Leray-Lions operator, and a function defined on Lorentz spaces. The nonlinearities considered in problems (I) and (II), bring additional difficulties which, as the strong singularity at zero (so blow-up may occur) and the lack of compactness due to the presence of a Sobolev critical exponent (problem (I)) and a Hardy-Sobolev critical exponent (problem (II)). In problem (III), the singularity implies that the standard definition of weak solution may not make sense. Therefore is necessary to introduce a special notion of weak solution on open subsets of the domain. Variational methods and Critical Point Theory techniques are used to prove the existence of solutions in the two first problems. In problem (I), our method combines Nehari's techniques, Ekeland's variational principle, minimax methods, a translation argument and integral estimates of the energy level. In this case, we prove the existence of (at least) four nontrivial solutions where at least one of them is sign-changing. In problem (II), we prove the existence of at least two positive solutions and a pair of sign-changing solutions, using the concentration-compactness method and the mountain pass theorem. The approach in problem (III) combines a surjectivity result for monotone, coercive and radially continuous operators with special properties of Leray-Lions operators. We prove the existence of at least one solution in a Lorentz space and obtain an estimative for the solution.

Abstract:
Springer-Berlag, Berlin, 2005<br>The shape optimization problems naturally appear in engineering and biology. They aim to answer questions as:-What a perfect wing may look like?-How to minimize the resistance of a moving object in a gas or a fluid?-How to build a rod of maximal rigidity?-What is the behaviour of a system of cells? The shape optimization appears also in physics, mainly in electrodynamics and in the systems presenting both classical and quantum mechanics behaviour. For explicit examples and furtheraccount on the applications of the shape optimization we refer to the books [20] and [69]. Here we deal with the theoretical mathematical aspects of the shape optimization, concerning existence of optimal sets and their regularity. In all the practical situations above, the shape of the object in study is determined by a functional depending on the solution of a given partial differential equation. We will sometimes refer to this function as a state function. The simplest state functions are provided by solutions of the equations−∆w = 1 and −∆u = λu,which usually represent the torsion rigidity and the oscillation modes of a given object. Thus our study will be concentrated mainly on the situations, in which these state functions appear,i.e. when the optimality is intended with respect to energy and spectral functionals. [20] D. Abstract:
In this thesis several problems are addressed. The problems considered vary from second order problems up to high order problems where generaliza- tions to nth order are studied. Such problems range from problems without functional dependence up to problems where the functional dependence is featured both in the equation and on the boundary conditions. Functional boundary conditions include most of the classical conditions as multipoint cases, conditions with delay and/or advances, nonlocal or in- tegral, with maximum or minimum arguments,... Existence, nonexistence, multiplicity and localization results are then discussed in accordance with these conditions. The method used is the lower and upper solutions combined with di¤erent techniques (degree theory, Nagumo condition, iterative technique, Green s function) to obtain such results. Several applications are studied such as the periodic oscillations of the axis of a satellite and conjugate boundary value problems, to emphasize the applicability of the method used; RESUMO:Nesta tese, intitulada em português, Resultados de existência, localiza- ção e multiplicidade para problemas não lineares e funcionais de ordem su- perior com valores na fronteira , diferentes problemas são abordados.

Describes an algorithm to bring the differential boundary value problem to an operator equation. The research of solutions to operator equations of special kind in the spaces polutoratonny with a cone, where the limitations of the elements of these spaces is understood as the comparability them with a fixed scale element of exponential type. Found representations of the solutions of operator equations in the form of contour integrals, theorems of existence and uniqueness of such solutions. The spectral criteria for boundedness of solutions of operator equations and, as a consequence, sufficient spectral features boundedness of solutions of differential and differential-difference equations in Banach space. Abstract:
This chapter analyses the process of rule-making in the maritime transport industry. It uses the term ‘spontaneous law’ to refer to norms that emerge as a result of regular and repeated interactions among participants in shipping networks, interactions that create common understandings as to how contractual obligations undertaken are to be performed. The rule-making activity results in a combination of articulated or expressed rules that are enforceable directly as a result of the formation of a valid and binding contract; and unexpressed (or implicit) understandings that form part of the contractual context and that supplement the expressed rules. The context within which these unarticulated rules come into existence is a commercial network of contractual relationships. The chapter engages with the pragmatic question of how and to what extent these unarticulated rules will be enforced by the courts in the resolution of a dispute, focusing on the courts of England and Wales.

Full text
Abstract:
The description of the general components of creativity led to the following key proposition of Process and Reality: creativity exists only through its actualisations. But what does it mean to exist through actualisations? First of all, staying true to the literal meaning of what is posed, it implies that, strictly speaking, creativity does not exist, or at least, it does not exist outside of the operation of actualisation. As a result, creativity cannot be treated in itself, it cannot be considered in its own being, since this would presuppose its existence. This leads to a highly distinctive approach to existence with regard to creativity: it appears that existence is something added to creativity, something that happens to it within a process. If it were internal, Whitehead would have said that only one of the forms of creativity’s existence is to be found in its actualisations, which would imply other forms belonging to it, relativising existence through actualisation. Whitehead’s proposition, however, is the opposite: creativity’s existence is related to its actualisations; it is drawn towards distinct things. It could be said, then, and without getting too involved in this point for now, that there is a difference between creativity and existence. It is a common metaphysical error, according to Whitehead, to confuse the ultimate with existence, making the latter into an attribute of the ultimate (in the form of substance, for instance, or of an atom).

Abstract:
Dreyfus defines nihilism as the leveling of all meaningful differences, as a result of which existence no longer has inherent meaning. Human existence loses its goal or direction, and thus nothing can have authority for us, make a claim on us, or demand a commitment from us. Dreyfus follows Heidegger in arguing that modern nihilism is ultimately rooted in background practices that subject everything—including our moral knowledge—to detached reflection. We rightly celebrate our ability to get everything clear and under control—an ability fostered by foreground practices as diverse as power stations, the fast food industry, and global information technologies. But these practices for the total organization of the world depend on our background practices revealing everything as a resource to be optimized and controlled.

Abstract:
This chapter presents various applications to the topology of classical Berkovich spaces. It deduces from the main theorem several new results on the topology of V(superscript an) which were not known previously in such a level of generality. In particular, it shows that V(superscript an) admits a strong deformation retraction to a subspace homeomorphic to a finite simplicial complex and that V(superscript an) is locally contractible. The chapter also proves the existence of strong retractions to skeleta for analytifications of definable subsets of quasi-projective varieties and goes on to prove finiteness of homotopy types in families in a strong sense and a result on homotopy equivalence of upper level sets of definable functions. Finally, it describes an injection in the opposite direction (over an algebraically closed field) which in general provides an identification between points of Berkovich analytifications and Galois orbits of stably dominated points.

Abstract:
It is readily apparent to everyone that there are multiple and serious concerns that face Muslim societies today. Terrorism, civil strife, poverty, illiteracy, factionalism, gender injustices and poor healthcare are just a few of the challenges to governance across the Muslim world. These are core issues for governance and public administration in any form of government. However, before we can engage with good governance within the context of Islam, we need to be clear what mean by good governance itself. A simple definition of good governance is that of an institutionalised competency of administration and institution leading to efficient resource allocation and management[1]. Another way of looking at it is as a system which is defined by the existence of efficient and accountable institutions[2]. Civil society now tends to look at good governance by way of impact measurement and how a certain set of processes result in a set of measurable and desirable outcomes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the article according to the theory of the subject, patterns of the existence and genesis of the subject of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” (USA) magazines was analysed, perspective of the emergence of new subjects was established, classification of the current subjects into universal and synthetic was suggested and some regularities of authorial creation of new subjects was examined. The main objective of the study is to identify patterns of existence of actual and formation of new topics in the Means of Mass Communication on the example of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” magazines. In studying of the empiric basis of the research the method of observation is applied; in finding common themes for both publications – a comparative method was used. The method of analysis was used in the decomposition of topics into separate topics; in isolation from the features of the topic, uncharacteristic of a journalistic work – abstraction was applied. The elucidation that the subject appears as a formal verbal expression of a set of homogeneous topics was done by applying the method of formalization. The main results of the research are: obtaining the new classification of topics of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” magazines; identification of a significant manifestation of universal themes on the pages of publications; establishment of the basic subjective (deontological) bases of formation of new subjects. A theoretical level of their knowledge will enrich science, equip practice, promote individual and world harmony.

Schulz, Jan, Daniel Mayerhoffer, and Anna Gebhard. A Network-Based Explanation of Perceived Inequality. Otto-Friedrich-Universität, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irb-49393.

Full text
Abstract:
Across income groups and countries, the public perception of economic inequality and many other macroeconomic variables such as inflation or unemployment rates is spectacularly wrong. These misperceptions have far-reaching consequences, as it is perceived inequality, not actual inequality informing redistributive preferences. The prevalence of this phenomenon is independent of social class and welfare regime, which suggests the existence of a common mechanism behind public perceptions. We propose a network-based explanation of perceived inequality building on recent advances in random geometric graph theory. The literature has identified several stylised facts on how individual perceptions respond to actual inequality and how these biases vary systematically along the income distribution. Our generating mechanism can replicate all of them simultaneously. It also produces social networks that exhibit salient features of real-world networks; namely, they cannot be statistically distinguished from small-world networks, testifying to the robustness of our approach. Our results, therefore, suggest that homophilic segregation is a promising candidate to explain inequality perceptions with strong implications for theories of consumption behaviour.

Abstract:
Using data from the latest edition of the Italian Time Use Survey (ITUS, 2013–2014), we analyse 31,309 childcare episodes to investigate the relationship betweenmultitasking (i.e., the combination of childcare with housework tasks) and parents’enjoyment of the time they spent on childcare, with a gender perspective. To this end,we rely on information from the episode enjoyment scores the respondents used toevaluate the degree of (un)pleasantness associated with the different activities theyrecorded in a daily diary. These episode enjoyment scores are a novelty in the ITUS,and provide a unique measure of the respondents’ momentary assessments of theirsubjective well-being. Our results highlight the existence of a negative relationshipbetween multitasking and parental well-being when spending time on childcare forboth mothers and fathers, regardless of the nature of the childcare activity theywere performing (i.e., routine or recreational childcare). Our findings add to priorresearch by shedding new light on the role of multitasking as a relevant contextualcharacteristic of care that affects the well-being of fathers, as well as of mothers.

Keane, Claire, Karina Doorley, and Dora Tuda. COVID-19 and the Irish welfare system. ESRI, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.26504/bp202201.

Abstract:
COVID-19 had, and continues to have, a strong negative effect on incomes in Ireland due to widespread job losses as the measures put in place to slow the spread of the disease resulted in severe economic restrictions. Despite the existence of unemployment supports, additional income supports were introduced to protect incomes. As public health restrictions lift and the economy recovers, we face the withdrawal of such supports. We examine these supports and the role they played in supporting incomes. By profiling those who benefitted most from the new schemes, we highlight the groups most at risk of significant income losses as they wind down. We consider what gaps in the social welfare system necessitated the introduction of such schemes in the first place, along with potential future policy changes to ensure that the social welfare system can provide adequate income protection and financial incentives to work as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003230.

Full text
