About meanings as a rule not included in dictionariesThe article discusses the problem of ambiguity of the exponents of logical existential quantification occurring in the verbal group of Bulgarian, Polish and Russian sentences: Bulg. отвреме навреме, понякога, Pol. od czasu do czasu, czasem, czasami, Rus. время от времени, иногда. This ambiguity can be explained by strong and weak existential quantification. Lexical semantics did not distinguish between these two types of existentiality. Here we present a description of selected exponents of logical existential quantification in Bulgarian, Po

Uncertainty is an objective feature of the modern world. The uncertainty has acquired a special meaning recently in connection with the pandemic, which has brought an unprecedented level of anxiety and actualized existential givens. According to research, the main tool in the ability to accept the ambiguity of the world and discover new opportunities in the face of uncertainty is meaning. Existential experience, expressed in processing existential givens of death, freedom, loneliness and meaning, deeply affecting a person, becomes a source of personal changes and carries out value-semantic reg

Donkey sentences receive either existential or universal truth-conditions. This paper presents two new data points going against standard dynamic approaches to this ambiguity: first, I show that the ambiguity extends beyond quantified environments, to cross-clausal anaphora. Second, I show that donkey sentences can give rise to narrow pseudo-scope readings, where the pronoun's implicit quantification takes scope below some operator in the sentence. Neither of these facts is predicted by standard dynamic accounts. Together, they suggest a different analysis in which the ambiguity arises when th

There is a robust debate on different linguistic levels of quantifier ambiguity resolution. Many accounts of the quantifier ambiguity are extensively examined in Turkish by semantic-prosodic and syntactic-semantic levels in previous studies. In this study, we aimed to investigate the prosodic and syntactic processes of the universal quantifier (her (‘every’) and existential quantifier bir (‘a/an’)) by using an on-line picture matching experiment with 75 young adults and native speakers of Turkish. Our stimuli consisted of 120 sentences (30×4) for each of the conditions with order (her–bir (‘ev

This paper addresses the ambiguity of comparatives that contain a permission-related existential modal in their than-clause. For example, given the context that the interval of permitted speed is between 35 and 50 mph, the sentence Lucinda is driving less fast than allowed is ambiguous between two readings: (i) her speed is below the minimum (i.e., 35 mph); (ii) her speed is below the maximum (i.e., 50 mph). Previously, this ambiguity has been attributed to either the scopal interaction between a negation element and a modal (Heim 2006a) or the optional application of a silent operator (Crnic

Psychology research frequently portrays the epistemic emotion of wonder as an intrinsic good. However, anthropologists highlight that social contexts shape its ambiguous political and moral potential. This concise article explores the awe‐inspiring DMT experience of a Chinese psychedelic user, which involves a humiliating encounter with a cosmic surveillance state. Analogous to the mood of wonder, the ambiguity inherent to psychedelic states originates from an existential vulnerability. This openness facilitates a wide range of potential social, moral, and psychological projects.

AbstractIn this article I make two main critiques of Kaczmarek and Beard's article ‘Human Extinction and Our Obligations to the Past’. First, I argue that there is an ambiguity in what it means to realise the benefits of a sacrifice and that this ambiguity affects the persuasiveness of the authors’ arguments and responses to various objections to their view. Second, I argue that their core argument against human extinction depends on an unsupported assumption about the existence and importance of existential benefits.

This paper studies the syntactic behavior of outro(s) in Brazilian and European Portuguese. Starting from the syntax of its Italian counterpart un altro/(degli) altri, we argue that outro(s)in prenominal position is neither an adjective nor a determiner, but an existential quantifier and that the presence of the indefinite article, um outro/uns outros, gives rise to a complex existential quantifier, like the corresponding Italian form. We also argue that outro(s) and um outro/uns outros do not specialize for different interpretations since they both substantially show the same ambiguity (one/s

This dissertation is driven by a gynocritical desire to lift the fiction of Marilyn Duckworth, a notable twentieth-century New Zealand writer, out of its unduly neglected position as an object of literary study. Most of Duckworth’s heroines usually feel out of place in the external world, grapple with identity issues or become ensnared in destructive interpersonal liaisons. This dissertation enquires about the fundamental source and nature of their predicament. The theoretical viewpoint adopted for this enterprise is derived from the thought of Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Simone de

Abstract In this chapter we focus primarily on fundamental human needs. The consideration of human needs is of utmost importance because they provide a basis for understanding human behavior. If these needs are thwarted—that is, if individuals feel threatened, cannot make autonomous choices, don’t feel to belong to a group, don’t feel approved by their group or society, or feel rejected because of their identity—individuals will search for alternative options for their need reconciliation. While there is a variety of fundamental needs, we identify those that are subject to empirical evidence a

It explores Simone de Beauvoir’s writings on women in love (specifically from The Second Sex and her popular essays from the 1950s and 1960s), outlining her critique of marriage and patriarchal love. Beauvoir is interested in the ethical implications of the existence of the Other and differs from Jean-Paul Sartre’s position in her emphasis on emotional experience, outlined in The Ethics of Ambiguity.
