Abstract:
This present work intends to explore crisis phenomenon as a question through the Psychological Attendance practice, which scenario is the University General Hospital at the University of São Paulo. The psychologists experience many crisis situations such those expressed by drama theme, while accompanying hospital patients and health staff. Their experiences lead to comprehend such praxis by the means of an analogy. Greek tragedy is the guideline chosen for this research, because this literary style from the V b. C. century, by its historical transcendental characteristic, carries forward possibilities to translate and unveil relevant aspects of human experience when passing by critical situations. Artistically, drama conveys a situation where the protagonist finds himself in a destiny crossroads, under loss of freedom circumstances by an unexpected event, which convocates him to handle his own responsibility toward the sense of his existence. Existential phenomenology is the methodological path for this research. Departing from the questioning of being, as Heideggers proposal, it goes apart from predefined procedures. Psychologists attendances narratives at many hospital wards, as board diaries, are the main resource for the interrogation and interpretation

Abstract:
In this thesis I explore aspects of the Buddha Gotama as a teacher. I begin by analyzing the nature of the Buddha's enlightenment and his state of mind as presented by various accounts. The chapter reconciles his decision to teach by means of Buddhist epistemology and gives an account of the difficulty of learning the Buddhadhamma. In chapter two I give three examples of the Buddha teaching individual students about the dhamma to show how he approaches each scenario differently depending on the needs of the student. Finally I give an account of William James' pragmatic method in an effort to show how the Buddha's teaching is pragmatic as a method for solving an existential crisis.

Abstract:
The social shift suffered last decades poses new challenges to Political Philosophy. André Gorz can be faced as a modern critic who points out productivism as one of the funding myths of modernity. He critically reviews the socialist tradition showing the need to reconsider the utopia and actualise emancipator ideologies. Related to epistemology and ontology, Gorz assumes a combination of social theory based on the idea of praxis (mainly Marxian) with a phenomenological-existentialist view of the subject. The key contribution in his work is the de-centralisation and re-consideration of the idea of labour, as core mediation in social interaction and nature-society metabolism. He is far to be receptive to the debate open by linguistic turn and the crisis of subject in contemporary philosophy, but he has opened a postproductivist outlook of industrial society that link postmarxism and political ecology into a coherent theoretical framework.

Abstract:
This work intends to investigate a way by which a university laboratory constructed Clinical Psychological Attention in Institutions Projects, in the field of Counseling Psychology. In order to put into context this laboratory and its practice, it is made an existential phenomenological analysis, by which the researcher follows science constitutional field since the XVII century till our days. Particularly, it is discussed how Counseling Psychology field was insert in our national context and enhanced in a public university, as a possibility to embrace the social, economical and cultural movements. In this way, it is revealed as dealing in the interior of human affairs, historically oriented to discover meanings and sense. Such analysis considers the property of knowledge application and studies into the human collective, relied to an ethical commitment toward well being. By this trend, the laboratory is presented through interview with its coordinator and reports from some participants. A narrative is constructed to show how the laboratory staff reflects upon demands to institutions intervention. This mode made possible to comprehend an interventive methodology as well as for research and practice in institutions, presenting a proper constructed path, dilemmas, reflexions and limits. Based upon the meaningful learning phenomenon, by Eugene T. Gendlin, the narrative composition of reports reveals interfaces between a formative method for Psychology students and the proposed interventions in institutions by the coordinator’s reflexions. Such a phenomenon, along with Walter Benjamin’s ideas about narrative, allows a very singular register of individual and collective experience. This present work makes possible to establish a comprehension of Psychological Counseling as a clinical locus for attention and care toward the subject in institutions. Modalities of psychological practice, constituted in such clinical locus, were effective care actions to hold homelessness and suffering as human lack of sense, creating paths for distinctive professional activities and scientific research far beyond the usual psychotherapeutic process context. By those findings, the university laboratory may be approximate to the Social Clinical Psychology trend, as a possibility for listening the subject in institution, a different mode of practice from the institutional Psychology perspective. On the other hand, the laboratory has encountered a property for its reflexions and practice by the existential phenomenological optical, as a possibility to comprehend subjectivity modes related to social, cultural and institutional aspects, taking temporality as occurrence. Another possible consideration is the conceptualization of a cartographic attitude as a mean to appropriately clinical actions into the context of institutions. Such attitude configures itself as a possibility to mutually knowing and to be known between actors, as a way to pass through experience and been marked by that.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: It has been shown that elderly, in the western world, is the age group who commits the most suicides. An elderly person has a lower capacity and a lesser ability to come to terms with trying circumstances. The aging process influences psychological quickness, ability to adjust and sense of memory. Elderly are often subjected to depression, which is the most common treatable risk factor for weariness of life. Anguish is often experienced simultaneously. Reasons for weariness of life could be a separation from a partner or spouse, to go through a dramatic life phase or physical illness. Often an existential life crises is experienced and a feeling of standing on one’s own in life. Suicidal patients who experience a life crises demand special care when hospitalized. Nursing staff perceive it as important to treat patients who experience weariness of life but they do not always feel that they have the capacity to do so due to stress and lack of time and knowledge. Aim: To describe nurse ́s experiences of identifying and caring for elderly patients in psychiatric care who experience weariness of life and who might no longer want to live. Method: Five semi structured interviews were done with nurses on a ward specialized on psychiatric care of the elderly. Inductive content analysis has been used to analyze the interviews. Results: The analysis resulted in two categories: Identifying patients who experience weariness of life and Supporting patients who experience weariness of life. Three subcategories Verbal - and nonverbal communication, The signification of aging and Wishing to die are included in the category Identifying patients who experience weariness of life. Subcategories Acceptance, Caring and Environmental influence belong to the category Supporting patients who experience weariness of life. The informants in the study understood the elderly patient’s feeling of weariness of life and cared for them with psychiatric and somatic nursing. Through supporting conversation, a sensitive and empathic approach to the needs and conditions of the elderly, they encouraged them to become more active on their own terms. The informants treated the elderly with pedagogical sensitivity to support them in their existential crisis. Discussion: The results are discussed in relation to articles and literature and also in relation to the chosen theoretical basis of the study.

Abstract:
Nowadays the educative process lasts about twenty years along its different phases of personalization and socialisation. Its consists of two stages either consecutive or not, each stage being marked by transitional periods. The "school" stage from nursery school to university or technological formations extends on about 15 years now and then interrupted by the changing consecutive courses every fourth or fifth year. Its characteristics are continuity and promotion. Among those changes we have chosen to expatiate on the one which occurs between high school and university. Its challenge and issue are dealt with in the first part of our study. The "post school" or "pre vocational" stage which lasts on an average four or five years is interrupted by socio-economical changes which occur every sixth month on an average. We treat the issue of that period of incertainty in the second part of our survery. Its brings about a question to which we try to answer in the third part of our thesis that is the notion of project. Our argument is that a project can only exist through its breaking phases. Confronting these two types of transition the pre-determined controllable one and the uncertain incontrollable one is the subject of the fourth part of our work. The general hypothesis which underlies our reflection is that there is an inadequate adaptation to the different transitional situations regarding the complexity of the issues and the simplicity of current answers. These transitional situations call for as high a capacity of adaptation as is needed when one is confronted to a new situation (cf j. Piaget). This hypothesis of "educability" has been tested by teams of high school teachers during forming courses. It is dealt with in the fifth part of this work. The results show that it is possible to develop a relationship between psychology and pedagogy, between research workers and teachers

Abstract:
This work deals with the topic how to help the over-indebted clients. The theoretical part describes the term over-indebtedness, its forms and the ways of help provided to the people with such problems. The closer interest is put on how these people can be helped by social work, which methods are suitable and relevant to this type of work and how these methods are defined in specialized literature and corresponding legislation. The practical part of this work focuses on the form of help to these people within a specific organization that provides social services and works for the over-indebted clients. Using some case studies the work describes some particular cases and methods of work which were applied. Concerning the methods of work with these clients, the thesis describes the elements of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis which are used by social workers while working with their clients. Further on, the thesis describes the social workers' attitudes, their experiences with their clients and points out some existential questions they deal with, especially from the perspective of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis.

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Aim: To find sources of meaning in life and people’s beliefs about the meaning of life in adult academic staff in midlife, with or without depression, to inform current mental health clinical practice and research. Background: Failure to address the problem of meaninglessness or the existential crises is associated with psychopathologies such as depression, anxiety, addiction, aggression, hopelessness, apathy, lower levels of well-being, physical illness and suicide. This is a real and complex clinical issue that needs to be addressed. Methodology: Qualitative research using auto-photography and photo elicitation in a sample of Australian academic staff in midlife. Recruitment was enabled via the university webpage and resulted in 11 participants (n=11). Ethics approval was gained through the universities Human Research Ethics Committee. Trustworthiness was increased by using multiple data collection methods – auto-photography (visual), photo elicitation (verbal) and essay writing (written), allowing for the capturing of deeper, richer and multi-dimensional data. Interpretive thematic analysis was used to obtain optimal results from the visual, verbal and written data. Findings: Six participants had no depression and were mentally healthy and five had clinical depression. The most talked about sources of meaning in life were: having a connection to people and animals, looking after the self, having hobbies, working and having a career, and the least talked about were religion, spirituality and atheism. Relationships with family were cited as the most important source of meaning in life. Beliefs about the meaning of life included that: life is a journey of self-development, or is about religious or non-religious beliefs, or is about living well, or is about family, love and relationships, or about making a difference. The non-depressed mentally healthy group provided many more items in every category in all themes compared to the self-reported depression group (for example: 100 photographs submitted compared to 12; and 156 categories identified compared to 48). Clinical implications: This research suggests that mental health clinicians may benefit consumers by helping them explore the fundamental human questions of: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? Where can I find meaning in life?; and, What is the meaning of my life? Without answers to these questions, consumers with depression may struggle to see the point of living, and if left untreated, may suffer from existential crises, severe depression and eventually suicide. Working on the attainment of meaning in life may be a goal of the therapeutic process and may result in better mental health outcomes for the clinical population. Mental health clinicians may need guidance and support to implement these strategies from more experienced clinicians and/or academic staff.

Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.2/10584.

Full text
Abstract:
This research characterized the domestic violence suffered by women, a theme that has been the object of study at national and international scopes. In Brazil, the legislation that supports the legal aspects of women in situations of violence is Law No. 11,340 / 2006 - Law Maria da Penha. The main objective of this work is to analyze violence against women from 11 reports of women treated at the Women's Police Station (DM) in Umuarama - Paraná - Brazil, in order to understand: how individuality and universality are found in a report with situations of gender violence? What elements prevent women from breaking up and/or resisting when there is a violence situation? The hypotheses raised were: the historical role of women in society linked to submission to men, as well as the State's absence in providing security for women, which, many times, makes it impossible to break the violence situation they experience. The investigation process was anchored in the survey of theoretical references and case study. Data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews. For data analysis, the progressive-regressive method, proposed by Sartre in the framework of his existential phenomenology, was used. From this research, it was found that psychological and/or verbal violence was present in all interviews, and that physical violence, threat, coercion and non-compliance with protective measures, were other configurations that violence assumed among the interviewees, being that their husbands/companions were the aggressors. As a justification for not breaking the relationship in the face of aggression, the interviewees reported the following: fear of the aggressor, financial instability and lack of family support, which in the Sartrian perspective can be considered as bad-faith. The consequences of the violence experienced are divided into: physical (bruises), psychological (depressive processes, anxiety, and suicide attempts) and social (social isolation). Regarding family relationships, some interviews describe a history of violence in their family of origin. Considering the service offered, the interviewees claim to know only the women's police station, and have access to little information about their rights. The investigation showed us that the hypotheses raised in this research were confirmed and that the data resulting from this research provide subsidies for the municipality of Umuarama-PR to rethink and reorganize the offer of public policies for women.
