Abstract:
<p>Scholars and practitioners alike are increasingly concerned about growing and differential rates of nonresponse in exit polls. In this paper, I examine how exit poll sponsorship affects response intentions. I leverage an experiment imbedded in a nationally-representative probability sample telephone sample that probed respondents about exit poll participation intentions. The survey, fielded by Opinion Research Corporation for CNN in November 2006, randomly varied whether respondents were informed the exit poll would be conducted by the “television networks,” specifically, or generically, by “some organizations.” The results reveal that respondents are significantly more likely to report they would be likely to participate in exit polls when television networks are explicitly identified as sponsors. These effects are robust across a series of specifications and do not appear to be moderated by key observable attributes including age, gender, race, partisanship or educational attainment. </p>

Abstract:
AbstractEngaging students in the design, administration, and postelection analysis of an exit poll can be an excellent experiential learning activity. Lelieveldt and Rossen (2009) argue that exit polls are a “perfect teaching tool” because they provide students with a cooperative (rather than competitive) learning experience; help students better connect theory, methodology, and course substance; and allow students to move outside of the classroom by branching out into the community. As professors at the University of Colorado, Denver (UCD), we have organized student exit polling during the 2008 and 2010 elections in the Denver area for research methods and elections classes. Although we have found these exit polls to be rewarding experiences for instructors and students alike, the reality is that conducting an exit poll with a group of polling neophytes, in the confines of a single semester, can be challenging. In this article, we discuss strategies and issues for instructors to consider when using an exit poll as an experiential learning exercise.

Abstract:
We discuss the history of the exit poll as well as its future in an era characterized by increasingly effective and inexpensive alternatives for obtaining information. With respect to the exit poll's future, we identify and assess four purposes it might serve. We conclude that the exit poll's most important function in the future should, and probably will, be to provide information about the administration of the franchise and about the voter's experience in casting a ballot. The nature of this purpose suggests that it may make sense for academic institutions to replace media outlets as the primary implementers of exit polls.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTAs professors, we seek not only to impart knowledge about issues and concepts in American politics but also to engage and inspire students to become more knowledgeable and more active in politics. This article explains how a student-run exit poll conducted on Election Day 2016 accomplished both goals. Seven faculty members from four universities pooled our students and carried out an exit poll in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and Ohio. By the time the polls closed, our students had spoken to more than 2,300 respondents, providing a memorable experience and creating a shared dataset that served as the centerpiece for many final class projects. Through this project, students gained hands-on experience in survey design, sampling, research ethics, polling, and data analysis.

Abstract:
Abstract Citizens’ exit polls are performed by local voters to verify the official reported election results. Five citizens’ exit polls were run in southeast Kansas during the Nov 8th 2016 election. These exit polls were designed specifically to verify computer generated vote counts and run solely by volunteer labor, all local citizens who were willing to put in the necessary hours on Election Day to conduct the poll and later, to count the results by hand. These exit polls were able to obtain high participation rates resulting in the ability to detect small yet statistically significant differences. All five polling stations surveyed show evidence of multiple statistical anomalies in both the pattern and size of the errors between the official results and exit poll results although biases were not uniformly oriented across sites. The small discrepancies found in the studied races were insufficient to alter the outcomes. Non-response bias and unintentional errors were evaluated as potential causes; those explanations were plausible in some but not all cases. These results show a pattern of discrepancies between the exit polls and computer counted results displaying consistent bias within sites. This would be an expected outcome of a deliberate manipulation of the computer results. While this data doesn’t conclusively prove election interference and manipulation of votes counts, it should be taken seriously as a sign of such interference. Doubts about the accuracy of the reported results are appropriate unless other plausible explanations for the discrepancies can be found.

Abstract:
Exit polls are surveys of voters once they cast their ballot. However, they are often unreliable sources of information on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voters. Several community organizations like the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) in Los Angeles attempts to provide a more accurate exit polling results about AAPI. The methodologies used to conduct the exit poll are noted. To properly conduct polling, it requires tremendous amount of resources such as time, funding, and staff, and is also a very difficult activity to do for a long period of time. Problems outside of the pollsters such as low voter turn out negatively affects the effectiveness of polling. The absentee ballot also renders polling as not wholly accurate since many AAPI due to their voting this way. However polling has plenty of merits as it helps document AAPI voting behavior which can be used for program planning and voting right litigation. Exit poll results are useful in targeting voter education plans. Pollsters are helping depict the emerging AAPI electorate and will also help protect its right to vote.

Abstract:
Abstract. Although exit polling has not been used to study Canadian elections before, such polls have methodological features that make them a potentially useful complement to data collected through more conventional designs. This paper reports on an experiment with exit polling in one constituency in the 2003 Ontario provincial election. Using student volunteers, a research team at Wilfrid Laurier University conducted an exit poll in the bellwether constituency of Kitchener Centre to assess the feasibility of mounting this kind of study on a broader scale. The experiment was successful in a number of respects. It produced a sample of 653 voters that broadly reflected the partisan character of the constituency, and which can hence be used to shed light on patterns of vote-switching and voter motivations in that constituency. It also yielded insights about best practices in mounting an exit poll in the Ontario context, as well as about the potential for using wireless communication devices to transmit respondent data from the field. The researchers conclude that exit polling on a limited basis (selected constituencies) is feasible, but the costs and logistics associated with this methodology make a province-wide or country-wide study unsupportable at present.Résumé. L'expérience a réussi à plusieurs égards.

Abstract:
In this study I examine voter response at an interview level using a dataset of 7562 voter contacts (including responses and nonresponses) in the 2004 Utah Colleges Exit Poll. In 2004, 4908 of the 7562 voters approached responded to the exit poll for an overall response rate of 65 percent. Logistic regression is used to estimate factors that contribute to a success or failure of each interview attempt. This logistic regression model uses interviewer characteristics, voter characteristics (both respondents and nonrespondents), and exogenous factors as independent variables. Voter characteristics such as race, gender, and age are strongly associated with response. An interviewer's prior retail sales experience is associated with whether a voter will decide to respond to a questionnaire or not. The only exogenous factor that is associated with voter response is whether the interview occurred in the morning or afternoon.

Abstract:
Exit polls have had a hard time predicting election results in Sweden over the last decade. The introduction of the Sweden Democrats in the political scene has generally caused problems for polling organizations. Opinion polls have a big influence on the economic market and therefore any wrongdoing might cause a big disturbance in the economy. This paper develops a model based on systematic sampling differences and sociodemographic background variables in order to predict the results of the Swedish general election 2018. The study uses data from SVT´s exit poll and SCB´s voter turnout survey. The results of the study show that the model in general predicts the 2018 Swedish general election better than the prognosis of SVT.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on understudied aspects of nonresponse in a context where limited information is available from refusals. In particular, this study examines social and psychological predictors of nonresponse in fast-paced face-to-face surveys; namely, election day surveys —popularly known as exit polls. Exit polls present unique challenges to study nonresponse since the population being sampled is fleeting and several conditions are beyond the researcher’s control.

If sample voters choose not participate, there is no practical way of contacting them to collect information in a timely manner. Using a proof-of-concept approach, this study explores a unique dataset that links information of respondents, nonrespondents, interviewer characteristics, as well as precinct-level information. Using this information, model-based plausible information is generated for nonrespondents (i.e., imputed data) to examine nonresponse dynamics. These data are then analyzed with multilevel regression methods. Nonresponse hypotheses are motivated by literature on cognitive abilities, cognition and social behavior.

Results from multiply imputed data and multilevel regression analyses are consistent with hypothesized relationships, suggesting that this approach may offer a way of studying nonresponse where limited information exists. Additionally, this dissertation explores sources of measurement error in exit polls. It examines whether the mechanisms likely to produce refusals are the same mechanisms likely introduce error once survey cooperation is established. A series of statistical interaction terms in OLS regressions —motivated by social interactions between interviewers and respondents— are used to explore hypothesized relationships. Overall, this research finds that cognitive mechanisms appear to account for voter nonresponse, whereas social desirability mechanisms seem to explain exit polling error.

This study focuses on two issues, the process of subjectivity production and the exercise of friendship alongside political militancy in the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST). Friendship is here understood as the social practice with the potential to question certain modes of socially formed relationships as well as their becoming a political exercise. The political militancy phenomenon is problematized based on the subjectivity production perspective. The objective of the study was to construct acartography of the subjectivity production processes with political activists of the MST and to highlight the points in which the exercise of friendship enhances the appearance of singularity in the context of this militancy. The cartography is a research method that permits the identification of macro political, as well as micro political forces that interfere in a psychosocial context, such as the MST. The participants were members of an MST group that participated in a Pedagogy course coordinated by the Department of Education of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. The other participants were militants involved in political formation activities at the social base, as well as in the other levels of the MST in the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Para?ba, Pernambuco, Cear?, Minas Gerais and Paran?. The results are linked to the oscillate incorporation of the landless identity model that occurs as a group of disciplinary strategies are put in practice in the political formation activities with militants, as well as the ways of model evation are formed. This occurs to the extent that new demands and forms of invested desires beyond the land object are incorporated in the MST. Such singular processes happen in three areas of the political exercise of friendship articulation: the masses, where there is a possibility for the MST to construct a new social collectivity; gender relations, where the socially destined space for women is redimensionized and; sexual diversity, which provokes the MST to follow its potential in questioning the actual hegemonic living modes. It is therefore considered that the MST has a great opportunity to become an important mediator of contemporary social and political struggles

Abstract:
The goal of this work is to experimentally assess the influence of limiting walls of Škoda Octavia 3 automobile cabin to the air jet flowing from the right-front situated automotive vent which is part of a car dashboard. The experiment is performed by the smoke visualization method. There is a single construction option measured for an experiment. The setup of the vanes direction and the air flow rate are modified for this option. The experiment is divided into two phases. In the first phase, the visualization of the free air flow is conducted. In the second phase, exit plates are constructed and consequently, the visualization of the wall-jet flow is conducted. The results of both are compared to each other. The results imply that the influence of the surrounding surfaces must be taken into account with the increasing flow rate for the vanes set in the direction of upper-right, middle-right, and middle-middle. There is a direct interaction between the flow and exit plates (the flow impact, the Coanda effect). The free flow does not contain the information about the mutual interaction between the flow and the exit plates, as it is in the case of the wall-jet flow. In the case of the wall-jet flow, the opening of the flow takes place due to the effect of the impact and the subsequential suction caused by the Coanda effect. The exit plates substituting the car dashboard and the front window contribute to the prevention of the air intake from surrounding space and consequently to earlier flow opening from the vent. The present work also contains the measurement methodology and the image evaluation, the comparison with previous free flow measurements (70% match) and the comparison to the measurement of hot-wire anemometry method.

Abstract:
Liquid carryover is an important phenomenon during the small break loss of coolant accidents (LOCA). The coolant loss rate due to liquid entrained decides the decreasing height of water level and the ability that the core can be cooled. It is especially important in nuclear heating reactor as it is integral arranged without safety injection system. Therefore, the initial water volume in the reactor vessel and coolant loss rate determines whether the core could be submerged. Numerous experiments have been conducted to investigate the phenomenon of liquid carryover in the pool system. Fruitful outcomes have been proposed involving mechanism of entrained liquid produced as well as semi-empirical formula for engineering purposes. However, the semi-empirical correlations on entrainment are highly data-depended and are less applicable under different experiment settings. This paper presents a numerical method based on the VOF to study the liquid carryover in the pool system. The numerical results are analyzed with mesh independence analysis and compared with previous experiments. Several types of liquid carryover are found in the simulation. The exit effect on liquid loss rate is specifically studied including the setting of exit as well as the range that exit effect dominates.

Abstract:
An experimental work was carried out on a passive containment cooling system (PCCS) test facility where the effect of PCCS pool water level change on the PCCS heat transfer characteristics was investigated. The specific design of condensing tube was based on scaling analysis from the PCCS design of Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR). The annulus between the primary condensing tube and the secondary boiling tube is filled with water and serves as water pool. During the test, steam generated in the pool is discharged through three steam exit nozzles located symmetrically at the top of the secondary boiling tube. Transient tests carried out with secondary pool water level change show that the system pressure for complete condensation mode increases with decrease in water level, however rate of condensation is almost constant. However, if the PCCS is operated in through flow mode the system pressure (primary side pressure) is constant, however, the condensate rate decreases indicating that some of the steam does not condense.

Abstract:
Condensation of steam with noncondensables in the form of jet flow or bubbly flow inside the suppression pool is an important phenomenon on determining the containment pressure of a passively safe boiling water reactor. 32 cases of pool mixing and condensation test have been performed in Purdue University Multi-Dimensional Integral Test Assembly (PUMA) facility under the sponsor of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to investigate thermal stratification and pool mixing inside the suppression pool during the reactor blowdown period. The test boundary conditions, such as the steam flow rate, the noncondensable gas flow rate, the initial water temperature, the pool initial pressure and the vent opening submergence depth, which covers a wide range of prototype (SBWR-600) conditions during Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) were obtained from the RELAP5 calculation. The test results show that steam is quickly condensed at the exit of the vent opening. For pure steam injection or low noncondensable injection cases, only the portion above the vent opening in the suppression pool is heated up by buoyant plumes. The water below the vent opening can be heated up slowly through conduction. The test results also show that the degree of thermal stratification in suppression pool is affected by the vent opening submergence depth, the pool initial pressure and the steam injection rate. And it is slightly affected by the initial water temperature. From these tests it is concluded that the pool mixing is strongly affected by the noncondensable gas flow rate.

Abstract:
In the present work, line-of-sight spectral radiation intensities (Iλ) were measured in a 7.1 cm ethylene (C2H4) buoyant diffusion flame, designed to mimic pool fires. Various time series statistics were calculated using the radiation data. Both soot and gaseous species had significant radiation emissions, emphasizing the need for spectrally-resolved radiation measurements. Significant fluctuations were observed in the radiation intensities from the fire, especially at higher elevations and near the flame edges. In addition, root-mean-square (rms) and probability density functions (PDF) of Iλ indicated higher fluctuations in soot compared to gaseous species. Autocorrelations of Iλ showed periodic oscillations due to the puffing phenomenon typically seen in pool fires. The observed oscillation frequencies ranged from 7.47 to 7.86 Hz and are in excellent agreement with empirical correlations based on past data. Characteristic frequencies of these oscillations were also reflected in the power spectral densities (PSD) of Iλ. Based on the measured autocorrelations of Iλ, it was observed that the integral time scales decrease with increasing height above the burner exit, which is expected since mean velocities increase with height due to combustion-induced buoyancy in pool fires and buoyant flames.

Abstract:
The occurrence of breakage failure of secondary heat transfer tube due to overheating by sodium-water reaction in LMFBR (Liquid-Metal Fast Breeder Reactor) steam generator has been a main difficult problem to establish its public acceptance. We are studying experimentally the phenomena for the breakage failure of secondary heat transfer tube. An experiment using sodium is difficult because sodium is chemically active and nebulous. The experimental probe needs sufficiently long life in sodium-water reaction circumstance. Because the corrosive jet causes the probe wastage, the probe needs some thickness. But the thicker the probe become, the less spatial resolution it has. Prior to measurements of void fraction in sodium-water reaction circumstance, we measured the void fraction in sodium and in water without chemical reaction by the measurement of electrical resistibvity. We verified whether the probe with diameter of 0.5mm has proper spatial resolution to investigate the pattern of the void fraction distribution in sodium pool and in water. The thermocouple with diameter of 0.5mm can be used also as a wire of the probe. The diameter of nozzle was 3.5mm, and the jet of Ar gas was injected upward in sodium or water pool. The temperatures of sodium pool and water pool are about 443K and 293K respectively. The velocity of Ar gas jet at the nozzle exit was changed from 17.3m/s to 129.8m/s. We used two different kinds of probes, stainless steel wires of 0.5mm and 0.1mm diameters respectively, which were covered by silicone rubber tube of 1.0mm and 0.2mm outer diameter as insulating coating respectively. The length of detection part of the probe (L) was changed from 5.0mm to 0.5mm. We measured the void fraction along the jet-center axis. As L decreased, the void fraction always increased at every 20mm distance from the nozzle exit in sodium and in water. When L was below or equal to about 1.0mm, the void fraction did not increase. Compared the void fraction of the probe with diameter of 0.5mm with that of 0.1mm, the void fraction was almost similar within approximately 10% difference both in sodium and in water. Compared the void fraction in water with that in sodium, the distribution pattern of the void fraction in sodium showed a nearly same trend as that in water though the void fraction in sodium was totally lower than that in water. It is suggested that this trend reflects the fact the surface tension of sodium is higher than that of water. As a result, the probe with diameter of 0.5mm has a proper spatial resolution to investigate the pattern of the void fraction distribution in sodium and in water.

Abstract:
The present paper reports a new series of experimental data of CHF (critical heat flux) of pool boiling on cylinders. Platinum wires of 30 mm in length are simultaneously used as heaters and thermometers. Their diameters are 0.1, 0.06, and 0.025 mm, respectively. FC-72 and acetone are used as working fluids. The range of the subcooling is from 0 K to about 50 K. The gaps between CHF and MHF (minimum heat flux) become narrower and narrower with the decrease of the heater diameter. But it exists even in the saturated pool boiling on the smallest wire in the present study. The dependence of CHF on the subcooling in acetone differs from that in FC-72 though the data locate in the similar range of Bond number in the two different kinds of working fluids. It indicates that interactions between the influences of the subcooling and size on CHF will be important for the small Bond number, and that there may exist some other parameters, which may be material-dependant, in addition to the Bond number that play important roles in the CHF phenomenon with small Bond number.

Abstract:
The boiling performance of the dielectric fluorocarbon liquid PF 5060 was measured on submerged 0.9 cm square tin-plated copper and bronze wire meshes soldered to a copper block. Three mesh sizes were tested: 8 wires/cm (20 wires/inch) with 406 micron diameter, 20 wires/cm (50 wires/inch) with 229 micron diameter, and 59 wires/cm (150 × 150 wires/inch) with 66 micron diameter. The curves were measured with top of the mesh open in a pool boiling arrangement and with the mesh covered with a plate so that bubbles must exit sideways.
