Abstract:
Previous research on the role transition of ex-athletes to a new career is somewhat limited because the studies have applied theories that do not fit the unique characteristics of athletes. This research uses another approach, Ebaugh’s role exit theory to understand the role exit process of professional athletes. Ebaugh claims that her theory, is applicable to all role exits. We found that Ebaugh’s theory applies to athletes, but with modification. Data were collected from interviews with 27 former professional athletes. The experiences of these athletes generally fit within Ebaugh’s 4 stages. However, the athletes paths are not entirely accounted for by the model. Thus, the model is modified to include: (a) a new stage of “original doubts” that precedes becoming a professional athlete; (b) the difference by the era in which the athlete played; (c) the significance of the type of involuntary exit; and (d) the “withdrawal” behaviors associated with leaving sport.

Abstract:
Exit fracture, the main factor influencing the precision of workpiece, has already been extensively studied. In the case of nanometric cutting technology, the depth of cut is in the range of nanometer or sub-nanometer, there may be some different discipline dominating the exit fracture generation process. Molecular dynamics (MD) method, which is different from continuous mechanics, has already played an important role in describing microscopic world. The author carried out MD simulation of the micro-mechanism of exit fracture generation process, the results show that different types of burrs is generated depending upon materials ductility and the dimension of burrs may be increased with the increasing of depth of cut.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research studies industry exit in the Japanese context, by examining the process followed five Japanese flat panel display manufacturers as they de-committed to and later exited from the industry. The five cases examine firms with systematically different exit barriers due to the presence or absence of strategic centrality and vertical integration in each firm. With one exception, all the firms followed multi-staged exit processes involving cooperative arrangements with other industry participants. Firms with middle to high levels of commitment and exit barriers went through more steps in the process than those with the lowest levels of commitment. The effect of top management succession and long-term employment upon the exit process are considered, and the role of cooperative arrangements in reducing exit barriers are discussed.

Abstract:
Burrs and fractures are two types of shapes formed on exit edges in pricision machining. They affect the quality of workpiece and the efficiency of prodcution seriously. A finite element model of fracture formation process to simulate the machining process of 2024-T3 Aluminum alloy is proposed. According to simulation results, five stages and variation of shear shain in fracture formation process are analyzed. It is found that shear strain plays an important role in fracture forming process. The method of determination of critical shear strain for fracture forming is proposed from simulation results.

Abstract:
A lack of scholarship on gang leaving in Cape Town, South Africa creates the impression that joining gangs is a death sentence. However, this paper shows that gang members can disengage, even amidst the scarcity of an emerging city. It combines life history research with Ebaugh’s (2013) role exit theory in an analysis of the disengagements of 24 former gang participants. Research considers the various stages of out-of-gang transitions, profiling the drivers and impediments to gang exit. Specific focus is placed on understanding how violence both catalyzes and challenges out-of-gang transition during the differential processes of disengagement. Findings indicate a lengthy and challenging transitional process from the point the first doubts emerge to the time a person successfully becomes an ex-gangster. Progress through different phases of gang exit is generally uneven and unpredictable, and carried out in a context with significant social, economic, and security challenges. Still, those interviewed for this study offer compelling examples to show that disengagement is possible. Their journeys yield insights that can be leveraged to design better informed efforts to reduce gang violence—whether in Cape Town, or in other similarly inequality prone and insecure cities around the world.

Abstract:
Title: ”… Then came the realization that I was just like them. That I have a gambling addiction…” This is a qualitative study of four former gamblers and their experience of getting out of the gambling addiction. The study is about how individuals have overcome a gambling addiction. The purpose of this study is to examine the social processes and factors that are of importance when overcoming a gambling addiction. In addition, the study focuses on how individuals experience the change from gambling addiction to a life free of that addiction. In this thesis, I conducted a qualitative study in the form of semi-structured interviews with four former gamblers. The theoretical approach concentrated on Ebaugh’s (1988) role exit theory and Giddens’ (2005) identity formation theory has been used to illustrate the interviewees' experiences of gambling addiction and their identity as addiction free. The study shows that the gambling addiction has brought economic, social and health-related impacts and some of these aspects still exist today. The exit out of a gambling addiction has been a process with different phases and events where the process for some has been incrementally with relapses during the journey. Based on my results, the changing process appears to consist of parallel turning points where different and more significant events give rise to role exit. The study shows the need of continuous social support in combination with gambling association support efforts and the gamblers’ own insight, motivation and freedom of action. It appears that the interviewed have accepted their role that they had left behind and they take careful consideration to the past and the future and try to make more conscious choices and build their new identity. This is done by actions and re- evaluations of themselves and their world. It is based on their lives, by their own choices. However, these choices seem to be limited by conditions that occur in the interaction with the environment, social norms and social situations.

Abstract:
Title: The process of leaving a social role Author: Christine Johnsson     This paper aims to describe the process of role exit for individuals within dysfunctional families. The study begins with describing the upbringing of the individual within these families. The process of codependency inspired the approach for the study; a process that individuals go through when they leave their dysfunctional families. The theoretical approach is from Helen Rose Fuchs Ebaughs study about the process of exit a role; Becoming an ex- The process of Role exit (1988). This process that Ebaugh (1988) describes is divided into four stages. The individuals’ first step in the process is to define a doubt to the current role, the second one explains how the individual have to weigh new alternatives compared to the present situation. The third stage is about leaving the role and the fourth stage explains that the individual have to come up with an approach to the ex- role. Since this paper is about individual opinions the method that has been used is qualitative. Ten interviews has been made with individuals that grew up in dysfunctional families. The interviews were analyzed from a phenomenological approach. That means trying to understand social phenomena from the individuals’ perspective. The results presented that the informants had made a role change, they had left the dysfunctional settings and entered a new social role. Which can be compared to Ebaughs study (1988) about the process in role exiting.

Abstract:
Most entrepreneurs have families that highly influence their business activities. However, scholars have paid limited attention to how the family as a specific social context impacts entrepreneurial outcomes, such as new venture creation, firm growth, and exit from entrepreneurship. This thesis investigates how the family influences such outcomes at different levels of analysis: the individual level, the firm level, and the regional level.  The theoretical framework is developed by integrating the theory of social embeddedness with literature on family business and entrepreneurship. Empirical evidence is based on a unique multi-level Swedish database combining individual-, firm-, and regional-level data. By providing an in-depth understanding of whether the family influence pertains to the whole entrepreneurial process or only to particular entrepreneurial outcomes, this thesis contributes to a new understanding of the family’s role in entrepreneurship.

Abstract:
This study aims to find out how the way out of homelessness can look and be experienced and in what way persons with experience of being homeless might think about our society´s different solutions to this problem. The study is based on five half-structured qualitative interviews with persons who have experience of being homeless. The theoretical perspectives used to analyze the empirism are “Stages of Change” and “The Process of Role Exit”, both dealing with changing processes. Our results show that the way out of homelessness can be long and very hard to achieve, and the change in housing situation can be either a process towards a more and more stable housing or through an opportunity that suddenly appears. Another result shows that people with the experience of being homeless can be negative to the solutions offered by our society but be positive to the idea of Housing First. One conclusion is that a housing of your own can mean more for the individual than just somewhere to sleep. To have a housing of your own can lead to personal development such as trying to get rid of one´s addiction or get better relations with one´s family.

Abstract:

This thesis highlights self-harming behavior and the journey to recovery. To approach the turning point and the following process three qualitative interviews has been done. An autobiographical book has been used as an empirical data. The purpose is to distinguish how the journey to recovery can differ between diverse people. The empirical data has been illustrated by using Antonovskys theory sence of coherence, Ebaugh Fuchs process of roll exit and current research. The issued questions grounding the thesis are: is it possible to distinguish a turning point (outer and inner factors)? How important were the people surrounding the individual to find the way out? And how did society's efforts help the individual out of its behavior? The conclusions that are determined are that with all of the interviewed and the autobiographical book, a turning point can be discerned. From the stories given to us we can determine that the turning points can differ considerably. Yet another conclusion is that all of the women agree that the care effort towards these types of patients is insufficient or even non-existent. The most important part in the recovery of the interviewed is their own strength and motivation. All of these women today have new strategies on how to handle life's adversity and difficulties.

From the psychoanalytical theoretical framework, this study seeks to identify the main issues mobilized in teenagers in process of institutionally exit who are about to reach the age of majority. Through literature, we tried to understand what are the main anxieties and insecurities mobilized during this period. It was held brief review of the historical and social construction of institutional care in Brazil and an analysis of current policies and teenager s family and socioeconomic context. It was discussed the possibilities of subjectivity and construction of the sense of belonging within the institution, as well as the formation of the bond between the teenager and this space. Teenage was study by Winnicott s perspective, considering the time of transition and transformation that it represents and the condition of social vulnerability present in the studied group. Understanding the importance of the realization of a work of mourning before another break ties, repeating their earlier stories, intervention proposals were raised to assist the teenage to carry out a through this process. It was found that, in addition to professional training and housing promotion, the space creating opportunity where teens can tell their own stories is presented as necessary resource to come to appropriate them. Thus, it is intended to have the opportunity to build other roads and do not remain stuck only to repeat previous personal history and family.

Abstract:
There are fewer female entrepreneurs than their male counterparts worldwide. This disparity persists even in countries like Sweden with the highest gender equality index scores and therefore presumed to be more gender equal. Moreover, women are underrepresented in the entrepreneurship literature. With fewer studies exploring female entrepreneurs and the gender-specific challenges, they face because ofinsufficient support, financial and otherwise. Gender equality in entrepreneurship has socio-economic importance and it plays a significant role in the overall economic growth. Making entrepreneurship a crucial economic development tool for women. With previous research showing that female entrepreneurs tend to exit their ventures at a higher rate, in this study we have explored the entrepreneurial exit decisions of female entrepreneurs with a focus on Sweden. Through our qualitative study, we interviewed 10 women that had previously made an entrepreneurial exit. Our findings show that female entrepreneurs mostly exit due to voluntary reasons, which affirms previous research that has found that female entrepreneurs are more likely to exit voluntarily than male entrepreneurs for mostly personal reasons and not because of underperformance (Justo et al., 2015; Jawarna et al., 2020). Moreover, we have further explored voluntary exits and involuntary exits. With findings showing that voluntary exits happen mostly due to management-related issues, economic instability, geographic relocation, or when the entrepreneur finds what they perceive as a better opportunity. All the involuntary exits in this study were a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study contributes to the literature of entrepreneurial exit as well as gender studies with its recommendations.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the relationship individuals have to their organizational roles. Based on two real-life examples, it discusses the pitfalls of complete identification with, but also of complete psychological separation from, one’s organizational role. Organizational roles need to be integrated into processes of moral reflection and moral learning. The chapter introduces the notion of ‘transformational agency’ for describing how individuals can remain committed to basic moral norms and put the results of their reflections about their organizational roles into practice. Drawing on Albert Hirschman’s notions of ‘exit’ and ‘voice’, various transformational strategies are discussed. Together, they lead to an attitude of critical loyalty towards organizations. Finally, the chapter asks how organizations can support moral reflection and transformational agency on the part of individuals.

Abstract:
The chapter offers a holistic legal analysis of the treaty provision regulating withdrawal from the EU. Craig examines Article 50 TEU and maintains that the process of exit from the EU should be divided into three stages, each of which raises major substantive and procedural questions. Stage 1 is the triggering of Article 50 TEU. Stage 2 concerns the withdrawal negotiations, and stage 3 relates to the outcome of the negotiations. As Craig explains, each stage poses specific challenges both for the EU and for the UK, and there are legal questions that have been—and will have to be—answered along the way. According to Craig, however, politics will heavily shape the law, with both the EU and the UK seeking to leverage specific legal argument in support of their preferred bargaining position.

Abstract:
Several models of physician–patient communication that have served as conceptual frameworks for communication skills training have been described over recent years. In this chapter, we review the following models: the E4 Model; Three-function model; Calgary–Cambridge Observation Guide; Patient-Centred Clinical Method; SEGUE Framework; Four Habits Model; and SPIKES. We then discuss the strengths and limitations of these models and describe a model we developed, the Comskil Conceptual Model. Communication skills training for healthcare professionals (CST) is an effective means to ensure high-quality communication. Physician–patient consultation communication is a dynamic, individual process, and the personality, attitudes, values, and beliefs of individuals influence the communication process. Furthermore, culture plays an important role in determining how communication proceeds, and it is important to take this into account while gaining an understanding of the various models that exist for teaching communication skills training.

AbstractWe review the role of chance, contingency, necessity, and providence among cosmic properties. The materialistic worldview in which the patterns of the universe result from random processes and humans exist in an “indifferent” universe is examined, as well as the current evidence for a fine-tuned universe. The multiverse is the preferred solution to explain why the properties of our observable universe appear to be bio-friendly. It reintroduces randomness and contingency into the cosmic process. However, this explanation comes at the cost of non-testability. And it is argued that there is no certainty about the evacuation of some kind of remaining fine-tuning in the (hypothetical) fundamental law that rules the multiverse.

Abstract:
AbstractWhen a public sector organisation (PSO) uses a software as a service (SaaS) solution from a global provider this imposes risks for different types of lock-in effects. In turn, use of such solutions by PSOs may prevent full control of digital assets that need to be created, processed, maintained, and archived for use and reuse over long life-cycles. This paper addresses perceived and actual lock-in effects related to use of SaaS solutions in the public sector. We review perceptions of lock-in amongst government agencies and investigate how 46 PSOs have addressed challenges related to obtaining licences and an effective exit plan related to use of the Microsoft Office 365 SaaS solution. Through a review of responses to a survey conducted by the Swedish Government Offices we find significant misconceptions concerning lock-in effects. We find that every one of the 46 PSOs investigated neither obtained necessary licences nor established an effective exit strategy to allow the PSO to independently access, process and maintain digital assets processed by the SaaS solution after decommissioning. We present recommendations for any PSO considering use of a SaaS solution.

Abstract:
AbstractThe creation of new ventures and growing them into well-established organizations is the key purpose of managing new ventures. This chapter explains the 10 most essential subtopics for managing new ventures (Shepherd et al. in Journal of Management 47:11–42, 2021): (1) lead founder, (2) founding team, (3) social relationships, (4) cognitions, (5) emergent organizing, (6) new venture strategy, (7) organizational emergence, (8) new venture legitimacy, (9) founder exit, and (10) entrepreneurial environment. This chapter ties these “managing” subtopics into the three major stages of the entrepreneurial process—co-creating, organizing, and performing. The framework provides a cohesive story of managing new ventures.

Abstract:
AbstractVirtual design production demands that information be increasingly encoded and decoded with image compression technologies. Since the Renaissance, the discourses of language and drawing and their actuation by the classical disciplinary treatise have been fundamental to the production of knowledge within the building arts. These early forms of data compression provoke reflection on theory and technology as critical counterparts to perception and imagination unique to the discipline of architecture. This research examines the illustrated expositions of Sebastiano Serlio through the lens of artificial intelligence (AI). The mimetic powers of technological data storage and retrieval and Serlio’s coded operations of orthographic projection drawing disclose other aesthetic and formal logics for architecture and its image that exist outside human perception. Examination of aesthetic communication theory provides a conceptual dimension of how architecture and artificial intelligent systems integrate both analog and digital modes of information processing. Tools and methods are reconsidered to propose alternative AI workflows that complicate normative and predictable linear design processes. The operative model presented demonstrates how augmenting and interpreting layered generative adversarial networks drive an integrated parametric process of three-dimensionalization. Concluding remarks contemplate the role of human design agency within these emerging modes of creative digital production.

Abstract:
This chapter goes into depth on the debt restructuring process itself, a topic which has not been covered in the literature in detail before. It gives a step-by-step outline of how restructurings take place, from deciding on the appropriate strategy, to determining which debt should be covered and in what way; to engagement with creditors in the negotiating process. It also covers one of the main structural problems in reaching an agreement with creditors—the collective action problem—and explores ways by which such problems can be overcome with both private creditors (collective action clauses, exit consents) and the official sector (the role of the Paris Club).

Abstract:
A centrifugal compressor impeller with high exit Mach number (M = 0.8–1.1) & high outlet flow angle (ALPHA 2 = 78–85 degrees) was designed. The objective of this work is to create a real condition for the better understanding of the behavior of the fluid flow in transonic and high swirl flow vaned diffusers. Particular attention was given to the flows located at the rotor–stator interface. The unsteady interaction between impeller and diffuser plays an important role in the compression process, especially in high loaded impellers. Actually, the vaned diffuser has to tolerate the distorted upstream flow due to the jet-wake structure coming from the impeller. Following the impeller design, numerical investigations were conducted for the transonic centrifugal compressor impeller composed of backswept unshrouded blades. The characteristic plots of the impeller resulting from the simulations show a good stable operation.

Abstract:
Abstract Liquid sprays play a key role in many engineering processes and the dynamics at the nozzle exit have a significant impact on the downstream spray characteristics. However, visualizing the spray in this region is extremely challenging because, under most operating conditions, the spray is optically dense. High intensity white beam X-rays, like those found at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory, can be used to produce time-resolved measurements of the liquid-gas structures in the spray near-field region. In this study, high temporal and spatial resolution X-ray images were acquired at the 7-BM beamline at APS of an atomization process using a canonical airblast atomizer consisting of coaxial liquid and gas jets. Unique flow structures were observed under various operating conditions, including bag, ligament, wisp, droplet, and air bubble formation, as well as hollowing of the liquid core into a crown at the liquid needle exit. Conditions where these structures exist are presented and their impact on spray formation are discussed.

Abstract:
In this paper, numerical simulations were performed for the gas-particle two phase flow in the Cold Gas Dynamic Spray (CGDS) process to investigate the acceleration of micro- and nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 100nm to 50μm. Nitrogen (N2) and Helium (He) were chosen as the carrier gas, respectively. The acceleration of carrier gas to particles in the De-Laval-Type supersonic nozzle was strongly dependent on the characteristics of flow field, as well as the densities and the size of the particles. Copper particles (Cu) were chosen as the spraying materials. The computed results showed that the flow structures of the carrier gas were very different for different gas and different spraying distance, which resulted in consequently different accelerating features. The cone-shape weak shocks (compression waves) occurred at the exit of divergent section, and the bow-shaped strong shock wave was found right before the substrate, which played a resistance role to the particles and prevented the smaller particles from approaching on the substrate.

Abstract:
In this experimental work, the cryogenic cooling of the Micro-EDM (μEDM) drilling process for improving the performance and quality of micro holes. The controllable parameters such as the current (Ip), pulse on time (Ton), Pulse off time (Toff) and gap voltage (Vg) were chosen for further investigation. The Taguchi L27 orthogonal array is preferred to achieve the best experimental runs. Case hardened AISI 304 stainless steel is selected to perform the experiments. The overall machining performances of geometrical characterization such as taper angle, Overcut, Circularity at the entry and exit and the performance evaluation such as the material removal rate and electrode wear rate are analyzed. It is found that the taper angle improved by 91%, overcut improved by 17 to 66%, Circularity improved up to 70% and 68% respectively, material removal rate increased from 9 to 70% and electrode wear rate reduced up to 76%. It is found that pulse off time plays a vital role in the quality of micro holes drilled in both conventional and cryogenic micro-EDM (CμEDM) processes.

Abstract:
Numerical investigation is carried out on a low-pressure ratio centrifugal compressor stage to study the effects of the rotational speed of a rotating vaneless diffuser on flow diffusion using various flow parameters and performance characteristics parameters. The results obtained are compared with a stage having conventional stationary vaneless diffuser. Rotational speed of the rotating vaneless diffuser plays a major role in determining the extent of net gain in energy level of the fluid and drop in stagnation pressure losses. The net gain in energy level result as rise in kinetic energy level of the fluid. By an effective diffusion process, this results into an improved static pressure and stagnation pressure distribution at stage exit and FreeRVDSR0.75 undergoes a comparatively better diffusion process. Based on this study, it can be concluded that the diffusion process efficacy of a compressor stage with rotating vaneless diffuser is better in the free type at diffuser’s rotational speed above 0.50 times the impeller’s rotational speed.

Abstract:
The jet axial velocity decay and velocity distributions of two 2D Lobed Nozzles (2DLN), and three baseline nozzles, one circular and two rectangular with different aspect ratios (AR), were measured and compared at low velocity (M0 <0.35) and ambient temperature conditions. The five nozzles have the same exit area. Test results show: 1) The jet axial velocity decay of the 2DLN may be characterized by three distinct regions; i.e., “potential core region”, where the jet axial velocity almost remains constant; “rapid decay region”, where streamwise and normal vortices play major roles for enhanced mixing; and, “smooth-down decay region”, where the mixing process is dominated by viscous shear layer spreading and small-scale turbulence. 2) The jet potential core length of the two 2DLN tested is only half to one-third that of the baseline rectangular nozzle (AR=4.37), and about one-fourth to one-sixth compared with the baseline circular nozzle. The length, in which the jet mixed with surrounding air is nearly uniform, is one to two times that of the 2DLN equivalent exit diameter, and depends on lobe design.

Abstract:
Testing of gas turbine blades within a specialized, well-understood, test cell environment remains a key part of the overall design process. This paper describes the simulation of a cascade of transonic turbine blades within the full test cell environment. The objective of this simulation is to bring CFD to bear to understand various installation issues which go into the design of the test cell. The focus here is on the role of the tailboards in managing periodic test conditions in a cascade with relatively few blades and transonic exit. Using a Design of Experiment methodology a series of simulations was performed with a systematic variation in both the location of solid tailboards and the open area ratio of a slotted tailboard. The flow relative to the target test blade was successfully optimized with respect to a reference periodic condition.

Full text
Abstract:
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the world and is due to the loss of retinal ganglion cell axons. These axons deteriorate in a region in the posterior pole of the eye known as the optic nerve head (ONH). The axons pass through the lamina cribrosa (LC) as they exit the eye at the ONH. The LC is characterized by a porous, connective tissue structure composed of laminar beams. The function of the LC is unclear, but is believed to include providing mechanical support to the axons as they transition from inside the pressurized globe to the lower pressure orbital space. Early experimental glaucoma studies have shown that the LC remodels into a thicker, more posterior structure which incorporates more connective tissue after chronic IOP elevation [1,2]. The process by which this occurs is unknown. These structural changes are assumed to play an important role in the pathophysiology of the ocular disease glaucoma, where elevated IOP is known to be the most relevant risk factor.

Abstract:
Modern vehicles know more about the road conditions than transportation agencies. Enhanced vehicle data that provides information on “close calls” such as hard braking events or road conditions during winter such as wheel slips and traction control will be critical for improving safety and traffic operations. This research applied conflict analyses techniques to process approximately 1.5 million hard braking events that occurred in the state of Indiana over a period of one week in August 2019. The study looked at work zones, signalized intersections, interchanges and entry/exit ramps. Qualitative spatial frequency analysis of hard-braking events on the interstate demonstrated the ability to quickly identify temporary and long-term construction zones that warrant further investigation to improve geometry and advance warning signs. The study concludes by recommending the frequency of hard-braking events across different interstate routes to identify roadway locations that have abnormally high numbers of “close calls” for further engineering assessment.
