CARRARO, Francesco. "de Saint Venant-Exner morphological models: computational methods for long-term numerical modelling." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Ferrara, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11392/2487844.

Abstract:
Morphodynamic models are used to predict river and nearshore evolution describing the interactions between sediments and water flow. Due to the importance of many engineering applications requiring morphodynamic predictions, great attention has been devoted to the development of more efficient numerical techniques. Morphodynamics combines two processes: the faster hydrodynamic evolution and the slower sediment-dynamics. When the sediment transport is much slower than the hydrodynamic evolution (i.e. the Froude number of the water flow is far from the unity), the interaction between water flow and bed response is very weak. From an analytical study of the one-dimensional, non-conservative, de Saint Venant-Exner (dSVE) system of equations result that, under this condition, the morphodynamic evolution depends almost on the central wave of the associated Riemann problem. According to this theoretical study, this doctoral dissertation is focused on the increasing of the numerical efficiency of morphological models. First a new efficient implementation of the Dumbser-Osher-Toro (DOT) scheme for non-conservative problems is presented. The DOT path-conservative scheme is a robust upwind method based on a complete Riemann solver, but with the drawback of requiring expensive numerical computations. Indeed, to compute the non-linear time evolution in each time step, the DOT scheme requires numerical computation of the flux matrix eigenstructure (the totality of eigenvalues and eigenvectors) several times at each cell edge. In this research, an analytical and compact formulation of the eigenstructure for the dSVE model is introduced and tested in terms of numerical efficiency and stability. Second a general mathematical framework is built to study the acceleration of morphodynamic simulations. Thus, a non-uniform acceleration is applied to the one-dimensional dSVE model by multiplying all the spatial derivatives by an individual constant (>1) acceleration factor. In this framework, one of the most applied morphological acceleration techniques, the MORFAC approach, can be seen as a particular case of the non-uniform acceleration. According to the MORFAC approach only the sediment mass continuity equation is accelerated. The final goal of the non-uniform acceleration is to identify the best combination of the three accelerating factors. Such a combination must respect two points: i) the bed responds linearly to hydrodynamic changes; ii) a consistent decrease of the computational cost is obtained. An analytical investigation of the non-uniform accelerated problem allows derivation of a new linear morphodynamic acceleration technique, MASSPEED (MASs equations SPEEDup), in which both mass conservation equations (water and sediment) are accelerated by the same factor. Moreover, the new framework allows an \textit{a priori} determination of the highest possible acceleration for both MORFAC and MASSPEED techniques. Finally, MORFAC and MASSPEED are implemented in the A-DOT numerical scheme and numerical simulations of a long-term sediment hump propagation demonstrate the advantages of the new approach.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The problem of modelling both the unsteady hydrodynamics and the bed morphological variations in natural channels is generally performed by solving the De Saint Venant balance equations for the liquid phase together with the Exner continuity equation for the sediments carried as bed-load. This thesis focuses on the development of an high-order accurate centred scheme of the finite volume type for the numerical solution of the coupled De Saint Venant-Exner system. A new scheme, called PRICE-C, is proposed. It solves the system of equations in a non-conservative form, however it has the important characteristic of reducing automatically to a conservative scheme if the underlying PDE system is a conservation law. It is applied to the shallow water equations in the presence of either a fix or a movable bed. The scheme is first introduced in a one-dimensional framework, and it is then extended to the two-dimensional case. The extension is not straightforward in the case of an unstructured mesh, since averages over suitable edge-based control volumes have to be performed. The scheme is extended to high order of accuracy in space and time via the ADER-WENO and MUSCL technique respectively for the one- and twodimensional case. The well-balanced property of the scheme is proven, i.e. the ability to reach steady states also in the presence of discontinuous water surface or discontinuous bottom profile. The scheme can deal with subcritical and supercritical flows, as well as transcritical situations. Moreover the proposed approach leads to a correct estimate of the celerity of surface discontinuities as well sediment bores and small bottom perturbations. The main characteristic of the scheme is its simplicity: it is based on a simple centred approach, that means that the knowledge of the eigenvalues of the matrix of the system is not required. This is important since the interaction between sediment transport and water flow not always admits detailed knowledge of the eigenstructure. Hence this scheme can be useful to engineers since they need simple numerical tools that can be easily used without entering in the mathematical detail of the differential hyperbolic system under consideration. Moreover the centred strategy gives generality to the scheme: in fact, it can be applied without modification to any kind of hyperbolic equations with non-conservative terms.

Abstract:
This work is motivated by a growing demand for quantitative information on the evolution of the coastline. We have studied two approaches for the analysis of sand morphodynamics. Both techniques lead to the resolution of nonlocal models for the seabottom. The mathematical study focused on the analysis of the existence and uniqueness of perturbations around the travelling-waves solutions of the Fowler model. We have shown that constant solutions of Fowler's equation are unstable. For the numerical simulation of this model, we have first considered explicit finite difference schemes for which we got numerical stability criteria. We have next used an approach by splitting method in order to solve first the convection, then the diffusion/fractional anti-diffusion exactly. We have also used minimization principles to describe the evolution of an erodible bed sheared by a fluid flow where the seabed is considered as a deformable structure with low stiffness whichadapts itself by minimizing a certain energy functional. It is interesting to note that this secondapproach can be linked to the first one because it also leads to a new Exner equation with a nonlocal term for the flux. Inspired by Fowler's morphodynamical model, we conclude this dissertation with an unexpected application to signal processing

Abstract:
The objective of the present work is to give further insights on the problem of the numerical description of the bed load transport. Here, two importante issues are addressed. A finite volume method is developed and applied for solving the Exner equation combined with an upwind discretization based on the direction of the sediment transport, in order to improve the accuracy and the stability of an existing morphodynamic model. The new approach shows a significant improvement; the modified model well describes the propagation of simple bed forms and the formation and evolution of free bars. A new formulation of the solid flux is then introduced in the model to account for the stochastic nature of the bed load transport and to describe the related sediment diffusion. The sediment flux is represented as the sum of an advective term and a diffusive one. The latter is given as a random bedload flux at each computational grid element and at time step. To trace the movements of the sediment particles and check the efficiency of the proposed approch a multigranular representation is developed and two equal size sediment classes are introduced. In addition, to account for the exchange of material between the bed surface and the bottom, the bed is divided into a number of layers.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we are interested on the study of a sediment transport model through two different approaches. One of them concerns the numerical modelling of the problem and proposes a numerical problem-solving method based on an approximate Riemann solver for the Saint-Venant-Exner system which is one of the most common model to deal with sedimentary bed-load transport. This last one is based on a coupling between the hydraulic model of Saint-Venant and the morphodynamic model of Exner. The key point of the proposed method is the treatment of the coupling issue. Indeed, there exists two strategies; the first one consists on decoupling the resolution of the fluid part from the solid part and making them interact at fixed times whereas the second one considers a coupled approach to solve the system by jointly updating the hydraulic and solid quantities at same times. We then raise the issue of the choice of the strategy for which we suggest answers by comparing both approaches. The other one focuses on the development of a methodology to study the uncertainties related to the model previously mentioned. To this end, we propose a stochastic formulation of the Saint-Venant-Exner system and we look for characterizing the variabilities of the outputs in relation to the naturally random input parameters. This first study reveals the need for a return to the Saint-Venant system with a perturbed bed to understand the sensitivity of the hydraulic quantities on the topographical perturbations
