Abstract:
Valve-in-valve (VIV) transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has been established as a safe and effective means of treating failed surgical bioprosthetic valves (BPVs) in patients at high risk for complications related to reoperation. Patients who undergo VIV TAVR are at risk of patient—prosthesis mismatch, as the transcatheter heart valve (THV) is implanted within the ring of the existing BPV, limiting full expansion and reducing the maximum achievable effective orifice area of the THV. Importantly, patient—prosthesis mismatch and high residual transvalvular gradients are associated with reduced survival following VIV TAVR. Bioprosthetic valve fracture (BVF) is as a novel technique to address this problem. During BPV, a non-compliant valvuloplasty balloon is positioned within the BPV frame, and a high-pressure balloon inflation is performed to fracture the surgical sewing ring of the BPV. This allows for further expansion of the BPV as well as the implanted THV, thus increasing the maximum effective orifice area that can be achieved after VIV TAVR. This review focuses on the current evidence base for BVF to facilitate VIV TAVR, including initial bench testing, procedural technique, clinical experience and future directions.

Abstract:
Abstract OBJECTIVES Clinical and subclinical leaflet thromboses are increasingly recognized complications following transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Identification of the risk factors is important to mitigate the occurrence of leaflet thrombosis in transcatheter aortic valves (TAVs) and ensure their long-term function. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of incomplete expansion of TAVs on the likelihood of leaflet thrombosis following transcatheter aortic valve replacement. METHODS Using experimental and computational methods, 3-dimensional unsteady flow fields of 26-mm SAPIEN 3 valves expanded to 3 different diameters (i.e. 26.0 mm, 23.4 mm and 20.8 mm) were determined in patient-specific geometries. The diameters corresponded to 100%, 90% and 80% stent expansion, respectively. To address the potential difference in the likelihood of leaflet thrombosis, blood residence time (i.e. stasis) and viscous shear stress on the surface of TAV leaflets were quantified and compared. RESULTS The results indicated that TAV underexpansion increased blood stasis on the TAV leaflets. Blood residence time on the surface of the leaflets after 80% and 90% TAV expansion on average was 9.4% and 4.1% more than that of the fully expanded TAV, respectively. In addition, areas of blood stasis time of more than 0.5 s, which are highly prone to platelet activation, increased linearly as the degree of TAV underexpansion increased. CONCLUSIONS Incomplete expansion of TAVs increases blood stasis on the surface of TAV leaflets. Regions of blood stasis promote platelet activation and thrombotic events. TAV underexpansion can therefore increase the risk of leaflet thrombosis in patients with transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Abstract:
The quest for the ideal cardiac valve substitute represents a highly categorized goal for the cardiac surgical community. Ongoing research has resulted in the development and creation of multiple newer heart valves and techniques for valve repair. Each of the many valves commercially available possesses a wide array of features. With the expansion of research investigations, improvement in long-term management can be translated and incorporated directly into patient care. As valvular replacement and repair/reconstruction surgery become more commonplace, it is paramount for nurses to be knowledgeable regarding the critical components of care

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to identify which locational variables influenced the decision made by producers from the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), main viticulturist state in Brasil, to expand investments on the wine industry. There was a movement of territorial expansion of wine production to new regions in RS (Serra do Sudeste and Campanha) and to Vale do São Francisco, in the states of Bahia and Pernambuco, regions in which he grape agriculture hadrit started yet. The direct-interview with viticulturists was the main source of information used by this work. This research embraced 73,3% of the producers investing in those new regions, and it was conducted during December/2005, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, and January/2006, in Vale do São Francisco. Descriptive statistic has been applied to summarize the data obtained with the interviews, due to qualitative variables representing most of the questions. The main hypothesis of this work suggests that in the agroindustry, variables involving raw material (quality, supplier) are the main factors in making the decision as to production area. A review of Bowersox Theory (1978) associated with the theory of locational factors was employed as theoretical referential. As for results, it was possible to validate that Brazilian viticulture was conditioned to the place distribution of productive resources, standing out the following factors: edaphoclimatics, raw material quality, manager behavior and land availability. Thus, the research revealed that companies have been concerned regarding the quality of the final product (wine), which is optimized through raw material quality (grape) that depends on edaphoclimatic conditions of the productive area. Indeed, the need to achieve a higher level of quality forced the viticulture to expand its production area to Serra do Sudeste and Campanha (RS) and Vale do São Francisco, which has recently turned into an attractive area to foreign investment, because of its excellent edaphoclimatic conditions, two harvests a year, continuous output year round and a small agroindustry.

In Brazil the intensification of international discussions in the 21st century on the production of clean and renewable energy emphasizes the expansion of sugar cane, raw material for the production of biofuel ethanol, considered to be less polluting. The recent expansion of sugar cane in Brazil has as target area the Center - South of the Cerrado Biome, mainly in land before occupied by grain, cotton and pastures and comes inducing accelerated change of land use, worrying about, among other aspects, by the environmental impacts related. Since the late 1990, especially after 2000, the cane has been expanding rapidly on areas before cultivated areas with other cultures, especially grains, in addition to pastures and increasing the number of plants. The mesoregion south of the state of Goiás, preferred for this rapid expansion of current, especially the sugar cane microregions of Quirinópolis, Southwest, of Vale do Rio dos Bois (MRVRB), is cultivates cane since the decade of 1970, when it was favored by Proálcool - Program of Alcohol, public policy federal that stimulated the production of vehicles powered by alcohol and which ran from 1975 to 1979; a new and recent expansion of cane was initiated in mid 2004. The research aims to assess the expansion of the monoculture of sugar cane in MRVRB 1985 to 2013, in order to clarify the causes of the recent process and assess its direct and indirect impacts, with emphasis in the areas of permanent preservation. The methodology was based on the interpretation of satellite images in the years 1985, 1995, 2005, 2010 and 2013, and in the interpretation of maps the physical environment through integrated analysis that have led to the drafting of the maps of suitability agricultural and the identification of areas with restrictions to the cultivation of sugar cane. It is concluded that in the period considered the standard MRVRB I have recent replacement of areas of grain and subsequently pastures besides remaining areas of Cerrado, considered to be Areas of Permanent Preservation (APP), albeit at a lower proportion. The lower expansion was assigned to the edaphic limitations and relief (topography), which together and associated to offer logistics, explain its leadership not in recent expansion of the sugarcane plantation.

Abstract:
In this article, we look at a model with (independent) system operator who faces stochastic but growing transmission demand and a penalty if frequency is not balanced. In this set up, we derive an optimal grid expansion investment strategy and analyze its value and risk implications. It turns out that the firm value is strictly concave in the level of transmission demand. Firm value, however, increases with optimal investment for any level of demand. Moreover, firm risk is decreasing in the level of demand and higher when the firm has an investment option. The risk increase corresponds to the exercise of the call option and is stronger, the closer the firm approaches its exercise trigger. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
The current situation of insufficient investment in transmission tends to weaken the advantages of a deregulated power industry. These shortages mainly arise because of the risk of not recovering the cost of investing in new lines Location Marginal prices (LMPs) and Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs) are key elements in reducing these investment risks. Market participants are able to hedge against price fluctuations caused by transmission congestion through the purchase or sale of FTRs. The value of FTRs, which is tied to the difference in prices between locations in the network, would indicate where transmission expansion should be implemented.

Abstract:
A great deal of research has been directed towards understanding the dependence of emissions and fuel economy on the operating and design characteristics of spark-ignition homogeneous-charge engine. Several recent investigations have been concerned with modifying the conventional spark-ignition such that the part load BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption) is decreased. Many of the proposed modifications convert the engine from fixed to variable displacement, i.e., the engine size is varied to suit the vehicle needs. Another possible modification to the conventional engine is to control the load of the engine by controlling the timing of the intake-valve closure rather than by variable-density throttling. This investigation examines the delaying intake valve closing as a method of controlling the engine load without incurring the usual part-load throttling losses. The extended expansion engine (EEE) is an engine with the power output regulated by controlling the crank angle at which the intake valve closes (IVC). As in case of a conventional engine the intake valve opens just prior to and remains open through out the intake stroke of the engine. However, the intake valve also remains open over a portion of the compression stroke while the piston pushes part of the cylinder charge back into the intake manifold and stored in a plenum. A one-way valve is provided to prevent the charge from re-entering the carburetor. After the intake valve closes, the actual compression starts and the expansion and exhaust strokes are similar to those of the conventional engine. The effective cylinder volume determines the trapped cylinder charge and therefore the power output, at the time of the intake valve closing. This paper mainly deals with the numerical studies on single cylinder, four stroke, spark ignition, Extended Expansion Engine extended expansion engine with intake valve closure delayed to produce an expansion ratio that is larger than the compression ratio. The Engine processes are simulated on a computer using thermodynamic and global modeling techniques. Further the concept of lean burn technology is applied to the simulated processes and the engine performance and emission characteristics are studied from the simulated results. Two-zone combustion model is adopted for the analysis of combustion. The model is also associated with sub models for calculating the combustion duration and equilibrium composition of five product species. From this investigations and comparison of results, it is concluded that the simulation work developed predicts the performance and emission characteristics of this engine reasonably well. Therefore it is evident that the developed code can be used with confidence for further parametric studies.

Abstract:
This paper presents a novel data-driven approach for detecting broken reciprocating compressor valves that is based on the idea that a broken valve will affect the shape of the pressure-volume (pV) diagram. This effect can be observed when the valves are closed. To avoid disturbances due to the load control we concentrate on the expansion phase linearized using the logarithmic pV diagram. The gradient of the expansion phase serves as an indicator of the fault state of the valves. Since the gradient is also affected by the pressure conditions, they are used as an additional indicator. After feature extraction and removing offset in the feature space by solving an optimization problem, classification of different valve types can be achieved with one support vector machine classifer. The performance of the method was validated by analyzing real-world measurement data. Our results show a very high classification accuracy for varying compressor load and pressure conditions.

Abstract:
Since the early 1980s, the Fogera Plain has been one of Ethiopia's major rice production areas. The introduction of rice, its commercialisation and the subsequent increased surplus production has led to the ability of smallholder rice farmers to intensify their production through diverse investments, mainly in supplementary irrigation. This has also enabled rice farmers to diversify crop production, mainly during the off-season, through the production of high-value crops like vegetables. Despite this expansion, a recent visit to the Fogera Plain by the authors revealed that most smallholder rice farmers were not able to sell their onions due to the collapse of local markets. To investigate this collapse further, this paper follows the authors' investigation of farmer investments in producing onion, their responses to the collapse of the onion market, and the implications for rural livelihood improvement within the Fogera Plain.
