Results of a confirmatory factor analysis validated the hypothesis that the experience economy framework would be a reliable and valid construct in measuring online gamers' sense of experiential gratification. Chapter 2 offers a proposal about the facts in virtue of which a mental state qualifies as a memory. According to this proposal, a mental state qualifies as a memory in virtue of the functional role that it plays within the cognitive economy of the subject. The chapter outlines two alternative proposals about the nature of memory. According to the causal theory of memory, a mental state is a memory in virtue of the fact that it has been caused by a perceptual experience of some fact. According to the narrative theory of memory, a mental state is a memory in virtue of the fact that the subject is using the mental state to construct a story of their life. It is argued that the functionalist proposal enjoys the virtues of each of the two theories, and it avoids the difficulties which threaten the two theories as well.

This chapter presents the first consideration of a little known network of radical musicians which has coalesced in the last decade into a vibrant new subculture within the broader (but still obscure) “old time music” scene. Since the late 1990s, old time music has been adopted and repurposed via the language of liberation and autonomy with great seriousness and complete novelty by a fluid group of alternative minded DIY anarcho-punks, many of whom are originally from outside of the region. These young musicians have relocated from around the country to the contemporary South in search of deeply authentic old time forms of music, life, and economy standing in opposition to dominant capitalist consumer culture. These “trainhoppers” search for community and authenticity among alternative-minded people and construct a unique old time musical ecology embedded within related pursuits like radical environmental politics, squatting, off-the-grid homesteading, alternative fuel production, and other aspects of the radical quest for hand-crafted experience conceived of as oppositional to dominant, contemporary American consumer culture.

The current shift towards digital transformation that guides the building blocks of the digital economy, has made it imperative to review some of the current theories, frameworks and paradigms. This applies to the different contexts of business management, where effective leadership is crucail, including project management and more so, sustainable project management. The authors’ current work, which is directed at both academics and practitioners, calls for a new paradigm in approaching Sustainable Leadership Effectiveness, that brings aspects from three knowledge domains (Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology) which are important for understanding human behaviors (in response to Murdock, 1971). The new paradigm and approach take leadership effectiveness practice, training and development into new dimensions, and embed them within an intelligent process with the Douglasian Cultural Framework (DCF)-based Cultural Intelligence at the center. Leaders focus should harness past and present experience to make a better future (Senge, 2008 cited in Tideman et al., 2013). This implies that for leadership to be considered sustainable, it must be formed around two important factors: adaptability and intelligence (Tideman, 2013). Accordingly, the journey that readers will be guided through in this chapter, is about novelty in thinking and practicing leadership which is different from the mainstream of leadership and Cultural Intelligence discourse and practice. The aim is to have managers and leaders not only understanding how to be effective, but how to behave intelligently in a challenging global context. In the introduction, the chapter presents the debate about leadership from the globalization lens, illustrating the obstacles that leadership research is facing. The chapter then provides the reader with a general review about Cultural Intelligence showing the dilemmas that the construct is facing, leading to the main theme of this chapter where the leadership adaptability framework is presented.
